Laura Novak and Professor Scharlott have very interesting conversation about Sarah Palin's photograph with reporter Andrea Gusty taken on April 13, 2008.
From Laura's blog:
LN: As I wrote in the previous post, I tried to contact everyone involved in these photos with the exception of the unidentified cameraman in the white shirt, and Mrs. Palin herself. Dan Carpenter and Gusty didn’t respond to my multiple and repeated requests. Bill McAllister and I went back and forth on four sets of emails until he outlined requirements for me that I would not meet. So, here we are.
BS: Can you tell us what those requirements were?
LN: I cannot. I assured him that our emails were private and confidential, and I have to honor that.
BS: Okay, so let’s get down to facts. The Gusty photo, which the McCain campaign people pointed to as definitive evidence that Palin had truly been pregnant, did a marvelous job of silencing most critics who claimed Palin faked the birth.
When questions about its authenticity arose, two “investigators” (graduate students, I imagine) of FactCheck.org, an offshoot of the Annenberg School of Communication, looked into the matter by calling Andrea Gusty. And Gusty told them that the picture was real, not “Photoshopped”, that she thought she had the only copy of it (implying it was taken with her camera), that she was surprised to see it on the Internet and that she had no idea how it got there. What do you think of the investigation conducted by FactCheck, Laura?
LN: If this is fact checking, then tell me anything you want, Brad, and I’ll tell the world that you told me and therefore, it is true. Apparently they did not ask why the picture was taken in the first place, whether anyone else had access to her camera, or whether Palin’s pregnancy had advanced dramatically in the previous month, as publicly available photos would suggest.
Gusty did say she saw the baby a week later, which she said she took as proof that Mrs. Palin gave birth to it. And perhaps at the time, it was enough proof. But I wonder how they all feel now in retrospect.
Laura and Brad continue to discuss the possible reasons for the picture having been taken, the possibility that it was staged, and some of the inconsistencies within the photograph itself.
I have never been particularly good with photographic analysis so I will leave that discussion to them, and if you click the link above you can enjoy their conversation for yourself.
There ARE a few things which I can add to this topic however. The first would be to provide this video of a newscast that Gusty produced to address the speculation surrounding this video, back in 2009.
I can also reveal that I was able to track down a source with inside knowledge of what happened that day.
What I learned was that the cameraman with the rumpled shirt is named Scott Favorite. That Gusty brought the newly released book Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down, and got Sarah to sign it for her. And that Gusty was a BIG fan of the Governor, and treated her more like a celebrity than a local politician.
My source also said that the date, April 13, 2008, is accurate.

So A. Gusty may be complicit in this horrible hoax, eh?
ReplyDeleteFigured as much.
In the photo of sarah and McAllister and Carpenter, sarah quite clearly has on a necklace. In the video of the interview between Gusty and sarah, I cannot see a necklace at all. Where did it go?
ReplyDeleteOn Laura's blog she has both photos - sp with the two men and the photo of Gusty interviewing sp.
The pictures may be real, but that belly is not.
ReplyDeleteDamn new thread. Ill ask anyway. this is unrelated to palin, kind of. But since you obviously don't like Bush, did you read all the emails released via crivella regarding the AG?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed getting to know people's writing style (at least in emailing). There are grown men who actually write out "like", making them sound like valley girls.
Getting sidetracked on whether the pictures are doctored is ridiculous. I'll take Gutsy's word that they are not fake. Palin's pregnancy, however, is a different kettle of fish; it was definitely fake. She of the magic 'now you see it, now you don't' baby bump did not give birth to Trig; pure & simple.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be the same outfit in the pic in Dallas before the wild ride.It is very unusual for a person to look the same, draping of clothes etc days apart except if you are a maniquin or wearing a fake pregnant belly.
ReplyDeletePlease investigate if Andrea dines at the "all you can eat" buffet at Golden Corral with Bristol.
ReplyDeleteAndrea... you along with many others will be eating crow when the fake birth story breaks.
I don't think Gusty has to be in on a conspiracy to fake things but she is certainly in on the protect sarah and never doubt surface appearances bandwagon. She was just another pawn.
ReplyDeleteGtyphen - O/T - NPR does not think Palin is running. http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2011/06/10/137101464/sarahs-choice-email-dump-will-add-to-doubt-that-she-will-run

ReplyDeleteThe necklace is there. Between 1:04 & 1:07 mark there is a slight glint on her neck from the light bouncing off the necklace. It happens throughout the video
I always believed the photos and this report were done on April 13th. It's just too much to believe that stuff was happening this early to prove something later on. They didn't need to. Up till this point, Palin thought she had been able to get away with it, and probably thought it would all go away after the baby was presented.
As for Gusty not knowing who uploaded these photos, that's a bunch of bull. She knew full well who did it, either herself or Carpenter. It sure as heck isn't that big a deal to say who uploaded them. I don't know why she's hiding that.
But, the weird thing is when Laura Novak reached out to all three people, Gusty and Carpenter never wrote back and McCallister gave her a whole bunch of rules she needed to follow if he was going to talk about the photos. Weird all the way around.
...Though it appeared that Palin's administration might have abused the exemptions to hide politically inconvenient emails, I thought it was worthwhile to shoot for the moon. On September 8, 2008—ten days after McCain tapped Palin as his running mate—I filed a request with the state for "all emails sent and received by" Palin during her entire tenure as governor.
ReplyDeleteThis was the first comprehensive request for the Palin emails received by the state. In subsequent days, other media outlets submitted more-limited requests. The Associated Press and NBC News requested copies of emails sent to and from Todd Palin. Msnbc.com asked for emails between Sarah Palin and certain state employees. CNN requested emails to and from the McCain presidential campaign.
...Palin's use of a private account was arguably improper and perhaps a violation of state guidelines. Why should news organizations and citizens have to pay extra because the governor had decided to engage in state business on a private email account?
http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/06/sarah-palin-email-saga
What's more interesting are the clips of the post partem Sarah at her office.
ReplyDeleteShe and Todd showed up with the chubby baby "Trig" pictured in the hallway with the Heaths, the one the doctor believes to be 1-2 months old. Sarah has a beautiful fresh French manicure...those take atnleast an hour to get done at the nail salon. So when did a governor who wrapped up a legislative session, travelled back and forth to Texas while leaking amniotic fluid, gave a speech, and just gave birth three days prior have time to get a manicure????
Why did she show up with chubby baby, and then bring ruffled ear baby to the office in May. Gryphen, you need to put those pics side by side.
Also, because Palin used those personal email accounts for official communications, this collection will not be comprehensive. Emails that were sent to or from her personal email to people other than those 51 state employees—even if these communications involved state business—will not be part of this batch, nor will emails that Palin sent from her personal accounts to the personal accounts of aides and other state officials. By using personal accounts for official business, Palin has been able to evade, in part, the open records rules of her state.
ReplyDeleteStill, it is hard to envision a release of so many pages that won't contain valuable nuggets for those who want to better understand Palin, who has been all over the news of late. For months, as other leading Republicans have been stating their intentions regarding the presidential race, Palin, who has declined to indicate whether she might enter the contest, seemed somewhat eclipsed within the political-media firmament. But she recently took steps to elevate her profile, including a stunt-like family bus tour of historic sites imbued with patriotic meaning. She quickly returned to the headlines, dominating the political news—even crowding out announced candidates. A Palin presidential reality show, at the moment, appears a greater possibility. And opposition researchers in the various GOP presidential campaigns are, no doubt, eager to peruse these records.

G, Do you know when Bristol dropped from public view in AK in 07? I ask because she attended Wasilla homecoming that fall (prob in Sept) looking happy and carefree posing with girlfriends in her home. She also played in the football game at school.
ReplyDeleteAre we sure she was pregnant? There's really no evidence other than Juneau admins and students who werent her friends.
Sarah has demonstrated her comfort with using fake body parts with her recent now-you-see-'em, now-you-don't boobies. If she is so delusional that she thinks she can pass off fake boobs as hers, an empathy belly isn't much of a stretch.
ReplyDeleteI am sure we all remember that Sarah said she got on the airplane for the "Wild Ride" and wasn't questioned because she didn't look pregnant.
ReplyDeleteSeeing her in this photo proves that either the flight personel are blind or incompetent, or that Sarah is a liar... which she is.
"Weird all the way around."
ReplyDeleteDamned right it's weird. If this picture showed the rill dill, why all the secrecy, "no comment", and jump through flaming hoop crap? Sounds like a Weiner evasion to me.

ReplyDeleteThe PHOTO is from april 13, 2008... the VIDEO is from sometime in 2009. Both are stated in the article... perhaps you missed your morning coffee? ;)
I don't think Palin would have thought that she needed to do anything special to "prove" her pregnancy, but I think Bill McCallister would have thought ahead. This was really the only opportunity for the picture. The legislators had all left and Sarah was about to leave. I don't think Gutsy was part of setting thin picture up and I don't think she lied in the follow up story.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do think she acted in an unprofessional manner and let her worship of Sarah get in the way of any integrity she might have had. What she should have done is not a story on the authenticity of the picture, but one on the sequence of events leading up to why it was taken the way it was, including Bill McAllister's role in setting it up. She could also have told if she requested Carpenter take a picture or if someone asked her if she would like him to do so.
Unfortunately Gusty's integrity is now so much in question that her talking about any of that would carry little weight.
What did Carpenter do when Bill joined Palin's administration.
wow look at her left eye starting at 2:56!!! she's really cross eyed! haha
ReplyDeleteCan someone link that PSA Palin did in Alaska in her home abut not walking away from something on the stove for more than 5 minutes? It shows the inside of her old house. Please and thank you.
ReplyDeleteWhen this photo was first shown at Palin's Deceptions, it had some other problems. The time stamp on the photo was years off. In order to start a new digital camera, the first step is to enter the time and date. For a reporter to fail to do this is the sign of an inept reporter.
ReplyDeleteThe other problem with the photo is that it first appeared on flickr account, identified with an Alaska zipcode. Although it was shot at a higher resolution, it was loaded at a much lower resolution.
Let's just assume that photo shows a visibly pregnant Sarah Palin a few days before giving birth to Trig. It is interesting that same woman, in that same shape, boarded at least four different airplanes flying back and forth to deliver a speech in Texas. Not one flight attendant noticed that The Governor of Alaska, a high profile passenger, was pregnant and required a seat belt extender. There are frequent seat belt checks on airplanes, and that obvious belly escaped the notice of people trained to observe such details.
Do you think that maybe the video was shot on the day they said (April 13, 2008), but perhaps the still shots weren't? Maybe they went back and did a "re-dp" for some reason unknown to us. Sarah is fond of doing re-takes, as we saw from her recent "family vacation" videos.
ReplyDeleteIs everyone dressed exactly the same as they were in the video? Would there be any reason to go back and take still shots to enforce the point that Palin WAS indeed pregnant AND LOOKED it? And then release these shots AFTER she's supposedly given birth and been selected for the Vice Presidential slot? Does that make any sense? Is this scenario plausible and can anybody reading this see any reason to do this?
" That Gusty brought the newly released book Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down, and got Sarah to sign it for her. And that Gusty was a BIG fan of the Governor, and treated her more like a celebrity than a local politician."
ReplyDeleteHow completely pathetic.
@5:59, who said: "So A. Gusty may be complicit in this horrible hoax, eh?"
I'd say not complicit, but CLUELESS. Perfect for Palin to use in this situation.
got my email from the washington post re the email release today.
ReplyDeletegryph...should we coordinate what sections we read and get a bit of organization into this effort?
just asking.
My former wife and I have two kids. Like Sara she is petite and rather modestly breasted. When she was pregnant her breasts got huge yet when I see the shots of a post partum Palin her breasts don't look any larger than any other time before she was "pregnant" and not "Showing". Even if her belly didn't get large her breasts would have certainly gotten bigger. I think it's instructive to check out the size of her girls during the run up to "birth" and then afterward. Also her post partum shots show a pretty flat belly. My wife took months to get back to her petite size and she was a runner and worked out every day so it's not like she was heavy to begin with or stayed that way afterward. I still look at photo's of Palin and ignoring the "belly" can't see any other signs of her pregnancy - face shape change? NOPE. Breast changes? NOPE. It's a cover up and no matter how many layers of clothes she used she can't hide those things. Also how was she able to breast pump or nurse when she went back to work three days after giving birth. She would have been leaking like a sieve.
ReplyDeleteBTW
ReplyDeleteI know that within an hour or so you are going to be buried under emails. I do hope you keep us updated.
Perhaps an open thread?
Or summary with comments so other readers can offer in?
All the talk about the interview picture not being photo shopped is merely a diversion. The issue is Sarah’s fake belly not whether or not the photo was altered.
ReplyDelete"The time stamp on the photo was years off. In order to start a new digital camera, the first step is to enter the time and date."
ReplyDeleteSadly this is not true. I have half a dozen digital cameras in my house, they range from cheap ones to extremely expensive SLR's. I was able to point and shoot without setting up any of them.
6:34 - "G, Do you know when Bristol dropped from public view in AK in 07? I ask because she attended Wasilla homecoming that fall (prob in Sept) looking happy and carefree posing with girlfriends in her home. She also played in the football game at school.

You Palinfreaks are so transparent. Anytime you describe the Palins as if you're writing some cheapo novel, we know it's you. "looking happy and carefree posing with girlfriends in her home"?! LMAO. I also like the "students who werent her friends" dig. Ooooh, so Bristol was super popular and it's only losers who provided "evidence" that she was "pregnant"? I suppose these losers are much like the "three classmates" who are "ripe with jealousy" of the 47-year-old Sarah Palin who spoke ill of her to Geoffrey Dunn?
You people are too, too much. But good for a laugh. One question, though: Are you a stalker or an actual friend of the Palins? I have to tell you, you come off like a stalker. Fortunately (for them), you probably stalk them on Facebook and pose no real danger!
Cameraman named Scott Favorite looks exactly like Andrew Breitbart, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteMotherJones setup a searchable site.

ReplyDeleteYou are right about the camera's. Amateur users often forget but a professional photographer wouldn't use a camera without setting the correct date at a minimum. You need documentation of when photo's were taken, it's journalism 101, even Palin should know that, assuming she actually has a college degree. Add that to the transcript list of wants
I don't recall any "serious" discussion the photo was photoshopped and Gutsy accused of being part of the hoax.
ReplyDeletePalin needed a "friendly" in her pocket in case there were questions down the road.
I find it odd that this photo is in a hallway; and out of the way, hidden hallway. It has the appearance of being an impromptu interview--catching her on the way to someplace else.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this is not the case.
Why not interview out in the open. Or in front of a flag, bookcase, fireplace or landscape? Or even her office? We know she loves backdrops.
The Photoshop meme is a straw man diversion. Until today, I never heard ANYBODY allege that the pictures had been altered. Why would they? First of all, anybody in the Palin camp is NOT going to be adept at much technological wizardry. Secondly, it would be SOOOO much easier to simply don the empathy belly. It certainly fooled most people at the time.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Palin being Palin, she wasn't smart enough to wear the device during her "magic ride" so she doesn't have any corroboration from the flight attendants. Not too bright Sarah, but you've heard THAT before, haven't you?
What I don't understand is why so many of these deluded Palin panty sniffers are STILL so devoted to her? Some of them are surely bright enough to look back on these events and realize that Palin was lying and engaging in a monumental con. What could possibly be gained by protecting Palin at this stage? She sure as hell ain't ever gonna' be president, so why protect this lying grifter any longer?
I guess you have to be so fucking stupid to support Palin in the first place, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect any of these folks to wise up and become more aware.
What a bunch of morons.
I love how people here pour over photos, over analyzing them to death, yet when I comment on a sept 07 picture of Bristol getting ready for homecoming, people scream "bot!" and assume it's a ploy of some kind.
ReplyDeleteTruthfully, we know nothing about that whole time period. Relax.
I don't remember where I read it, but supposedly there's a computer program that studies the computer information a camera puts in a digital picture, then searches the internet for other pictures with the same computer signature. It was developed to help track stolen cameras. What would that program find if it searched for info from the Gusty photos?
ReplyDeleteHey Ms. "Tight-Abs" Palin!
ReplyDeleteI'm remembering your comment that you didn't show much with this pregnancy!!
No professional airline personnel noticed that big belly on FOUR different flights to and from Texas/Alaska for the Governor's Conference. (Even though being observant is their JOB.)
That's the thing about lying....it's hard to keep track of 'em all.
And YOU Ms. Wolf-Killer....are a "flippin' liar.
We know Sarah.
Odd gratuitous tongue-thing image at 2:46 in the "Andrea Gusty addresses" video, for a second or less, right where it is changing from a montage to the station info. Was that an editorial comment, sticking a tongue out at us? There's no other reason to have it there.
ReplyDeleteGood way to make sure "Useful Idiot" gets attached to your resume.
It was nice seeing a video of Sarah Palin where she was not screeching or trying to seduce the interviewer.
8:53, you are a fucking moron. You're the same anonymous bot, or more likely Palin, who tells us over, and over, and over again about Bristol and her happy, carefree , life full of friends and social activities, no specifics, no links, no pictures, no names, dates, times or proof of anything. I can make up shit too, we all can.
ReplyDeleteWe all have seen Bristols old My Space pages from that time frame, talking about how Sarah asked her if she was pregnant, and laughing atnherself for being "a slut". We saw the venom she spewed on Facebook to local teens who said her show was a fail. We saw Bristol give endless interviews saying how hard her life was as a single mother, while simultaneously buying a home in Arizona with cash. We saw Bristol stomp her way through DWTS, while her weight ballooned up. We saw Bristol show up in DC in May with a new face, then lie and say it was dental surgery.
My point being, all the fairy tales you tell about Bristol are the EXACT OPPOSITE to everything we have seen and heard right from her own mouth. Now go away and provide some concrete back up before posting the same boring shot again.
Bristol looks pregnant, to me, in the September 07 Christmas picture.
ReplyDeleteI just love how the bots keep coming here and mentioning Bristol and the pregnancy thing.
ReplyDeleteSo my question would be has Bristol only had 3 babies? The bots keep bringing it up over and over again.
Many of us spent weeks on PD parsing this photo ... resolution, vanishing points, carpet patterns, ad nauseum. It was a distraction and in the end made a lot of us look like idiots.
ReplyDeleteGutsy probably had someone take this with her personal camera not as a "journalist" but for a keepsake of her interview with her idol. Everyone present was a SP supporter, and not suspicious of the "pregnancy"; by then, it was well known and most people did not question it.
There remains the scrawny neck and lantern jaw with none of the bloating and necessary weight gains that occur in late pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteAnd the non engorged breasts in the photo with Sadie.
There is also the problem that in that photo and others that show the tummy, she is standing up straight.
With all that added weight in late pregnancy the body's center of balance shifts to the front and up and is compensated by the characteristic arched back of late pregnancy and of people with large pot bellies.
The only alternative to keeping the center of balance, roughly located in the middle of the pelvic girdle, is to roll the shoulders forward and stick the butt out behind. But in late pregnancy bending forward tends to scrunch the fetus against the descending aorta and ascending vena cava and putting even more pressure on the sigmoid colon and bladder than already exists just from the weight and size of the uterus. It also shoves the rather rigid uterus up into the stomach, liver, lungs and heart.
Which is to say it is almost impossible for people with bulging guts to stand up straight.
You see the same situation in older people (of whom I am one) due to the loss of muscle and bone mass in the buttocks and upper legs and the addition of fat in the gut the body's center of balance shifts forward and up thus the characteristic that older folks, when they bend forward stick their butt out often with bent knees. They have to move some weight back in order to counter balance the weight of the shoulders and head tilting forward when they bend.
It is characteristic and unavoidable. (Believe me I have and continue to try, it's virtually impossible not to without staggering forward a step.)
You notice that Gusty's old executive producer just got busted?
