Didn't something important happen on this day? Gee what was that? Oh yeah, I remember!

Today was the day that Alaska gained its independence from a no talent, limelight seeking, opportunist who had turned our state into a national joke.

Gee whatever happened to her?

(Just for fun perhaps all of you can share what you were thinking the day that she quit, and how your opinion of her has changed in the two years since she admitted how thin skinned and easily defeated she is.)

P.S. Just for fun here is the edited video of all of Palin's erratic breathing during her resignation speech.

  1. Bye, Bye, Mrs. AIP7:13 AM

I live in the lower 48, and have traveled to Alaska. I remember feeling elated when she resigned, for Alaskans & for the USA. Her resignation was an admittance of guilt over something. And to date, no explanation she has offered of her reason for resigning makes any sense. Too many ethic complaints filed against her? Gimme a break. If she can't even handle being a governor for a full term in a state with so few people to even file complaints, how could she ever function in elected office anywhere else in the US?

How my opinion of her has changed: in 2009, I thought she might believe in what she supposedly "stood for." Now it's clear she stands for nothing & is for sale to the highest bidder, whether it's AIP, the Koch Bros., Murdoch, Fundies--including Franklin Graham, etc. She stands for nothing--not even her own kids. Oh, and like Bristol, her face has really changed due to too much cosmetic surgery, so she looks worse now.

At the time I thought "Thank the Lord - she's out of politics". That's all I really wanted was for her and the Palin family to be gone from the national stage.

I was in Vienna on vacation at the time and my family thought I was nuts for being so happy that she quit and that I was following the coverage so closely.

Unfortunately not much has changed in these last two years -- she's still in our faces almost everyday, my family still thinks I'm crazy and I continue to follow this DAMN story. MAKE IT STOP!!!

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”

It meant I could build a 3,000sq. foot hobby house, purchase a $600,000 rolling family recreational vehicle, pay a million seven cash for a winter retreat in Arizona, purchase x number of RAM trucks and Escalades, take private planes stay in $2,500 a night suites and bestest of all allow Todd to quit his stupid day job with the big bad oil company to babysit & purse watch for me. What a very LUCRATIVE two years on the road!!!1

Has Sarah ever thanked her BOTS for making all this happen?

  7. It was a Friday. I go to the office on Friday's usually to catch up on paperwork/filing; I clean the office, etc. I had a workshop I had ordered on CD's on billing and coding for mental health professionals - I told myself I was going to concentrate on that and not going on the blogs. I got all set up at the office to do just that and was about 30 minutes into the workshop when my son (yes, the one who thinks I obsess about Palin; spend too much time blogging about her; and that she is of no consequence anyway and nothing to fear) called me. I remember exactly what he said : "Mom, I can't believe I am about to tell you this, but there is some news. Sarah Palin has just resigned, and one of those blogs in Alaska that you like ... is it Mud .. something (to which I replied Mudflats?) yes, he said, well, it has crashed. You can't even get on it." I logged onto the internet, don't remember where/how I confirmed that she was resigning, I logged off, closed down my workshop, packed up and came home and was on the blogs for the rest of the weekend.

My feelings now: I almost wish she had stayed in office thinking that maybe after a few more months, the Alaskan constituents or the courts in AK, or the Legislature might have held her hands to the fire and made her work for them (she was already leaving AK to go and make speeches and stir things up in various places); I guess my retrospective hope is that she might have had to address the issues in Alaska and not been able to become the Tea Party darling for a while and also that the abuses of her office would have become more evident and legal proceedings against her would have kept her from going any further. Alas, her resigning just thrust her upon the entire nation and we have been dealing with the effect for two years today.

I still so strongly believe that babygate needs to break wide open and I think about it everyday.

  8. I remember exactly what I was doing: working in my sewing room, watching MSNBC (must have had the day off, since it was Friday). They were all a twitter about breaking news, and they clearly had no idea what was going to happen. Then I watched this "event" live and just tried to figure out (as did the talking heads) what the heck she just said and what was going on. It's weird that I would happen to be watching TV on a Friday, and just happen to catch this live. I thought at the time, yippee, her political career was over, since she couldn't possibly explain away "quitting" as governor of a small state (sorry, AKans--the population is smaller than the metro area where I live) and then go on to national office. I still think that, but too bad $P doesn't realize that.

I'm reading the Dunn book right now. Gosh, it reads like a thriller, and I already know the ending, and at least some of the main events. Excellent book...can't put it down. Very different from the Bailey book, which was interesting, but mostly seemed to me to be a vague apology from someone who still hadn't quite "recovered" from $P. Looking forward to The Rogue in September!

The bots must be wondering where their money is going. The general panning of her appearance at the MOA and the photo's of the actual signing taken surreptitiously from balconies around it show the lack of people. The MOA claimed 700 people. Several local's who went to watch claim it was more like 400 at best and the best part was the long line tape-offs like they use for large crowds clearly anticipated thousands. Needless to say her star continues to dim.

Best comment from here was a guy who claims the people who were coming to "glitter" her, took the light rail from downtown Minneapolis but quit halfway there as a gesture to her inability to finish out her own actions.

That was the day that this became my favorite blog. I had been here occasionally but after since that day I visit many times a day. Isn't it so funny that while this is probably Sarah's most hated blog, she has led and keeps leading so many of us to this blog by her actions and words? Good going, Mr G!

Truly amazing performance. You really have to wonder just what she was hopped up on.

Interesting and poetic that the dead by pollution which she helped introduce, Lake Lucille, is her "inspiration." Like there weren't thousands and now hundreds of thousands of Americans in addition to Alaskans and Wassilians who knew the lake was so polluted with chemicals and human sewage that it was as dead and as fouled as Sarah's heart.

  15. I recall thinking to myself that she was taking a lot of trouble to give too many excuses. That usually means the real reason is something else altogether.

I never did believe that a scandal was on the way; I may have suspected it was to cash in on the offers but did not put it all together until later.

I have been wondering for two years how long Sarah could stretch out her 15 minutes.
Even if she stays on with FOX and the lecture circuit she will have to come up with a major gimmick to stay in the multimillion dollar earning bracket.

She is spending money all over the place, Van Flein and others are bound to be charging her the earth to do her planing and dirty work.

Gryph time to start a pool. How long till Sarah declares Bankruptcy. (Which could explain the trademark ploy, she could claim Ch. 11 protection for part of her income and property.)

I remember thinking: What scandal is she trying to avoid. I thought it would become known in the next few weeks/months.
    I'm still wondering.

I thought she would shrink on the national stage.
Boy did I underestimate her, and overestimate the social conservative populace.
    And underestimate the tea party.

My predictions for that day are pretty much a bust.

And she has turned out to be much worse for the country than I imagined. I also feel sorry for her. I think she is mentally ill, being used by (while using) some very powerful people for their own purposes (Republican Party power and corporate power in/of America) and than while each is using the other, she will eventually be the victim of them if she gets too successful and too close to office. I don't wish her ill as much as I wish her off the national stage.

The only thing that hasn't changed is I find her a fascinating study.
    Lucy

My initial aversion to Palin was based on instinct, and a rejection of the snarkish attitude and rhetoric that Republicans thrive on. Everything I've learned since, has confirmed my instincts.....she is like an enormous Macy's Day Balloon...full of hot air. Fortunately, she has a slow leak, and will soon become just a deflated sack of nothing.

Her speeches always stumped me, that anything sensible could be garnered from them is to me incredulous. I could give a better speech, although I am not a trumpet and would not sexify myself for affect. What I am grateful for is through her exposure my own naivete about American politics, power structures, and the MSM has been stripped away. She also compelled me to learn as much as possible about Barack Obama, and that has been very important to me both personally and civically. Despite the shit load of problems we face as a country, and as part of a larger world, I will not lose my sense of hope, and have complete trust and faith in our President,
as it is he that truly has a servants heart. I refuse to qualify that I don't agree with him on everything, how is that even possible? When dealing with the collective it is no longer about a single perspective, ideology, circumstance or benefit. By design, it is about compromise, and with skilled leadership, it should be about the "greatest good." I believe history will show President Obama to be a man of greatness, and the powers that attempted to thwart him as fools that hung themselves with their own rope.

    I'm in.....Yes.We.Can.

I was sitting in my favorite bar with a woman I had dated periodically (we both had the day off for the holiday and were meeting up for lunch). All of a sudden Palin was on the big screen with the crawl reading "Palin resigns Alaska Governorship". I updated my Facebook status with the first thing that came to mind: "What do they have on her?".

    I hope we know someday.

I remember listening to that breathy, nonsensical speech and immediately the R&B song by Joe 'Stutter' popped into my head -- particularly the line 'I can tell you're lying 'cause when you're replying you stutter, stutter.'

Uncle G., you should find the link to where a magazine (Vanity Fair maybe?) took an editor's pen to the written version of the speech. The corrections and red markings were hysterical, but sadly enough, it wasn't enough to get her off the national scene.

I was returning from Nancy Lakes w/ a friend on that gorgeous July afternoon when we heard it on the radio. I couldn't believe it! I rolled down the window and started "whooping" at the top of my lungs, then got on the phone and called friends with the news. We were elated. On the way through Wasilla, we drove right up to the Palin's driveway on Lake Lucille and did a loud chorus of "Ding, Dong The Witch is Dead!" I only hope she heard it. I will never forget that day.

What stood out to me was when she said, "and I've explained my reasons" (and she said this more than once) and I thought, "she did? What reason?" and then later she said it again, I've explained my reason, clearly and succinctly or something and I had to laugh, because I couldn't make heads or tails out of any of it.

What I remember most was all the rumors circulating and waiting for the scandal to break. Also too one of my favorite's from that weekend was Shannyn Moore's rebuttal to the quitter after being threatened with legal action by Van Flein:

"Sarah Palin is a coward and a bully. What kind of politician attacks an ordinary American on the Fourth of July for speaking her mind? What's wrong with her? The First Amendment was designed to protect people like me from the likes of people like her. Our American Revolution got rid of kings. And queens, too. Am I jacked-up? You betcha.

I so hope the Republican governors across the nation and Republicans in the House (especially)in D.C. are voted OUT this coming election cycle.

They always say they do things in Congress because the Americans want it! What a pile of crap! It is assuredly a fact they DO NOT pay a damned bit of attention to the polls or listen to what the majority of the citizens of the U.S. wish. The resignation made me recommit to seeing babygate exposed.

Bailey tells us she "hated this job," and although I used to think something bigger was forcing her quit, it's now obvious that she quit for the overwhelming desire to make $$$. She made lots of it. But 2 years later we find her shilling for her plastic, smug, ignorant daughter in a tacky mall, away for yet another day from Trig, her gift from our Heavenly Creator. This is only months from a time of horrid violence in Tucson that had Palin's name and imagery all over it. And just weeks after an unqualified failure of a bus tour/vacation/campaign swing and a propaganda film that has generated no buzz at all.

She is running out of time. Her bots think she's dithering on the presidency, but she always knew she wasn't declaring. What to tell them to keep the $$ coming? That's what she has to figure out now. But most of the ninnies are already saying Palin 2012 or 2016. What a bunch of suckers.

I thought that when Palin quit, she said that she didn't need a title to progress Alaska. She quit to progress her own bank account. While running for VP she received so many tempting financial offers that she could not touch while she was governor, so she quit to take advantage of them. Rupert Murdoch bought her, and Sarah quickly rolled out a book, a book tour, a crappy reality tv show and made speeches that paid $100,000. for word salad (plus expenses).

Since then, Sarah's second book did not do nearly as well. Bristol's book is a bomb. They are hooked on celebrity, fame, money and publicity without doing anything to deserve the money, fame and celebrity. It is truly sad that the media pays so much attention to someone who has so little ability and does so little.

My first reaction was that Palin was not serious about holding any office and chose to throw her future in politics away by quitting. Regarding Palin's statement nothing made sense nor was comprehensible except she was quitting. The ethics complaints excuse uttered amongst analogies of fish and basketball muddled the message.

As a citizen and person I was stunned and surprised Palin chose to blow up clear prime opportunity for what she claimed she stood for. I hoped for her as anyone that she would return to AK to govern and prepare herself for the future to be successful.

It became obvious former governor Palin and offspring suffer from malignant entitlement. Regarding major ethics violations she and Todd are entitled to blur personal relationships with business including government. A job is not to serve a family. A political leader is to serve the people.

The problem Sarah is facing is that people are catching onto her "I'm Still Thinking About Running For President Scam" and are not donating to Sarah's personal cause like they use to do. I'm at our family's house on a lake, and our neighbors have a 7-yr-old grandson who has Downs. He is a crazy little man, all over the place- keeping up with everything his siblings and cousins do. In fact, he's getting his 'life jacket' on as I type this- ready to go out in the boat to go tubing! This little boy's parents (and grandparents) made use of any services that were available, just as the Palins should have. Can't help but wonder what Trig will be like at that age- I'm guessing nowhere near as advanced, which is terribly sad.

At the time, I thought she looked like someone who had just been told, "If you resign, these charges will go away."

The frantic air-gulping, the piled-on excuses for quitting, the free-association speech--all made me think she was harried and scared, that she was being forced to quit and trying to paint it in all colors of wonderful.

I know there was extra happy in our Fourth of July celebration--my cousin and I kept trading smiles and saying, "The Governor's resigning--yes!"

Since then, when no indictments came down the pike, I thought maybe she just quit so she could grift money without all those pesky ethic-thingies. But when I started hearing rumors about the sexting affair, I tend to think my first reaction was correct. She was forced to resign in the face of legal charges she couldn't lie or wink her way out of.

  53. I don't remember where I was at the time, but I do remember thinking that Bristol or Willow had had confrontation with her about mental health and/or drug use issues and forced her into resigning. Maybe they had seen the proofs of the Runner's World story and realized the infamous picture with "sexy" Sarah with her hand with two blackberries and her elbow on the American flag was too over the top. Or had the issue come out by then.

In retrospect it seems there was no story that was about to break. Maybe someone had told her she had to release her emails. Maybe someone told her you quit or else I ...........

Maybe it was the money but would even she had known how much she would make?

She did have that high school girl "so there" look when she walked away.

Has anyone asked for the emails from August 08 to her last day in office? If they are requested now, they might be released by 2012.

After cable TV broadcast her speech, I immediately went online to C4P. The wailing and beating of breasts was hilarious. They were bewildered, baffled, and bereft. They even prayed together online. Within about two hours, they had turned it around in their own minds to "She is a political genius!" and "Now she is unleashed to do whatever she wants!"

My favorite thing about her speech is this: At first I assumed she was just babbling whatever came into her head because it was so incomprehensible. But months later, someone online pointed out that in the nationally televised version, you can't see the TelePrompter she used. But you can if you look at the video posted at the ADN, which was taken at a slightly different angle. Since then, I have posted the link whenever some idiot somewhere talks about President TelePrompter.

You can see the TelePrompter when the camera pulls back at about 1:11 minute in.

    http://community.adn.com/adn/node/142175

Having used one myself, I know that's what it is, but for the real doubters, you can include a link to Wikipedia's drawing of a TelePrompter.

BTW, I just mentioned to my mother-in-law, who has early Alzheimer's, that this was the anniversary of Palin's resignation. She is a dear, sweet Christian woman who has forgotten a lot of things. But when I mentioned this, she said without hesitation, "She's just crazy."

The Monday after I mentioned the quitter to someone at work, a professional grifter himself, "only get my news from Rush" kind of guy. He laughed and said "Well, at least she was born in the US." This was also just about the time Orley started her lawsuits, and I had not heard that the general public was still stupid enough to buy into the idiocy. The conversation ended with me telling him to "fuck off!" and slamming the door so hard I nearly knocked the wall down. Not one of my better moments. He, on the other hand, is now out of work and living on Social Security Disability benefits. Something he said two years ago he'd rather die than do.

I agree with 8:19 in many respects. Thank you for your clear insight. The addition I have is two-fold:

THEN (when she-who-shall-not-be-named resigned): I had become previously sensitized to the hypocrisy of fundy screechifying, hollering and "outreach" several decades ago when I was in foster care, as a 'tween'. The Hollywood starlet style jewel-seamed nylons and high-heeled pumps on the lady rent-a-revival preacher, with contrasting condemnation of 'worldliness' from the pulpit and immersion baptisms in the on-site dunking tank -- did it for me. I could go on, but anyway, I 'got it' that Saree was all for telling others what to do that she did not herself do, selling others on submission and giving and giving and giving to the 'cause', while (as a woman of g_d NOT [Queen Esther?]), Saree could do as she pleased since the courts could tell her and tell her and so far still does a she pleases. She was already on-high (o yes she is, naturally and chemically)/ appointed from on High/ bringing us to be 'just-like-her', et.al. ad nauseum. THEN, I thought she might go directly to TeeVee preaching and book selling (her own lesson plan, so to speak).

I had already detected the sickness in her families: the abuse (father) and neglect (mother) from her parents, and toward her children (Saree both abuses and neglects the kids; Tawd mostly is a taunting meanie).

NOW (after two years of Sarah's 'servant's heart', 're-loading', general destruction, shilling for Saree, her targeted event of the Arizona shooting and blood libel screech): I think she will first declare her prez candidacy, Tawd will die post-haste in some terrible way that is not her fault, so she can also immediately drop out of the running, take up with some slimy and wealthy fundy (Franklin?), go on to poor-me screechifying, possibly overlapped by the QVC or similar circuit, Then, as her plastic features contort and fall off, she will eventually settle into the sunset of TeeVee preachin' circuit. Unless Saree is convicted/ diagnosed and put away, she will ALWAYS be available somewhere on the dial or online, causing havoc and devastation for others and herself.

Then: Shortly before the election in 2008, a colleague mentioned that she thought Palin was interesting and kind of liked how 'feisty' she was. Since I had been to AK several times and followed the politics there pretty closely, she asked me what I thought.
I told her that Palin was a lying, incompetent, uneducated, divisive, right-wing religious zealot, and far more dangerous to politics and to our country than most people could imagine.

I hoped she would go away before she did even more damage to this nation.

    Now: pretty much the same.

My dear husband was packing for a business trip when he heard me screaming in the front room "Oh SHIT! I can't believe it! She's QUIT!!" followed by delighted whoops.

I knew then that it would be very, very hard for her to have any political credibility in the future.

Like 10:10am I thought her gasping breaths and endless, nonsensical excuses meant that an FBI charge was being dropped if she would agree to resign.

Today I am amazed at how long she has drawn out her 15 minutes. It's like she is the "walking dead". We will never be rid of her. (Damn you, McCain!)

As her political "career" is grinding to a halt, I see her romancing Franklin Graham. Even if she is not able to use him and his organization to further herself, I have little doubt a tax-free religious scam is in her future.

I remember running over to DailyKos to see what was going on.

And there I learned that there were questions into the building materials used to build the Palin compound on Lake Lucille and how they might have been stolen from the construction of the Wasilla Sports Complex (or, as it's called now, the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center). So I was expecting indictments by Labor Day on charges of theft and embezzlement. Only they never materialized.

And you said that day that she would disappear from sight immediately.

That she would be indicted by the Feds. Or the IRS. That her book would fail, her TV show would get terrible ratings, that the public would ignore her.

You promised that Levi had the goods, that the truth about Trig would be revealed, that Todd would be charged.

Numerous scurrilous rumors were repeated, none of which ever panned out.

For over two years you have repeated every terrible accusation you could find and when they were shown to be false and dismissed by the media, trumped up some new 'truths' out of mid-air. When you run out of rumors, you drag out some old photos or repeat a story you dropped six months ago.

You have continued to perpetuate this fraud for over two years, all in the interest of keeping the clicks coming. To paraphrase Olbermann, you, sir, are a huckster of the worst kind, preying upon the fears and prejudices of a few. Shame upon you and shame on the people who keep coming back.

I've taken an interest in the problem of psycopathy in the human population and the havoc they wreak, especially in positions of power, and so I want to post this except from a book on psycopaths for all to consider if it sounds like someone we know:

"Psychopaths are social predators who charm, manipulate, and ruthlessly plow their way through life, leaving a broad trail of broken hearts, shattered expectations, and empty wallets. Completely lacking in conscience and in feelings for others, the selfishly take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without the slightest sense of guilt or regret. Their bewildered victims desperately ask, 'Who are these people?' 'What makes them they way they are?' 'How can we protect ourselves?'...

Psychopaths have what it takes to defraud and bilk others: They are fast-talking, charming, self-assured, at ease in social situations, cool under pressure, unfazed by the possibility of being found out, and totally ruthless...

Psychopaths are generally well satisfied with themselves and with their inner landscape, bleak as it may seem to outside observers. They see nothing wrong with themselves, experience little personal distress, and find their behavior rational, rewarding, and satisfying; they never look back with regret or forward with concern. They perceive themselves as superior beings in a hostile, dog-eat-dog world in which others are competitors for power and resources. Psychopaths feel it is legitimate to manipulate and deceive others in order to obtain their "rights," and their social interactions are planned to outmaneuver the malevolence they see in others." (Robert Hare, Without Conscience, Guilford Press, 1999.)

Yeah, Gryphen hypes a ton of stuff, but we don't come here for that. In my memory he's never even asked anyone for money. The reason we come here is to process the words and deeds of this snake oil saleswoman, who's so completely without scruples that she's a threat to discourse and civility and governance if she's allowed to flourish. I detest Ms. Palin even if nothing illegal ever turns up about her, even if babygate is never laid bare, even if Todd is pristine, etc. She's shown me enough of herself, by herself, that I don't Gryphen to tell me one way or another.

I was shocked, because I figured that it meant the end of her political career.

I was also relieved, and at the time I thought that Parnell was so low-key that it would be nice to have him for governor.

I vaguely knew him in school and thought that he was a nice guy. Boy was I wrong!

His refusal to meet with Obama (blatant disrespect and the lamest excuse I've ever heard when he was called on it) when the President stopped at Anchorage, his attempt to "give it all away" to the oil companies without any commitment to invest in our state, the way he tried to make it as difficult as possible for the public to get the Palin e-mails, and his "budget punishment" of a couple of Democratic legislators, have all led me to believe that he is as bad or worse than Palin.

my initial reaction was, "well, i guess she isn't going to run for president, because this is the nail in the coffin of a political career." i didn't know what a horrible governor or person she was at the time, but i thought this was a pretty decisive statement about her future.

o/t: just finished bailey's book. i get that the palins hold grudges and have petty vendettas. i get that trooper wooten divorced sp's sister. but what i can't understand is todd's multi-year, sustained obsession with the man. just divorcing sarah's sister and cussing about chuckles doesn't seem like enough for someone who isn't even a blood relative to react with that level of extremity, even when that someone is todd palin. i started wondering if there was more to the story, like did todd make a pass at wooten and wooten turned him down or something?

Wanna bet that in three weeks, she'll stand on the shores of Lake Lucille again to declare that she's not running. She'll put on another performance about how she'll be able to serve the American people by NOT running for president. I suspect she's "dithering" because she's lining up more moneymaking speeches and projects.

We can say whatever we want about Sarah, but she's made a fool out of all of us and gotten rich in the process. Nothing will ever derail her. We're stuck with her. She's fortunate to be part of the majority and to be a white woman. The standards applied to her, as a result, are different than for others. She's just taking advantage of a society that elevates stupidity and doesn't require accountability from the entitled and privileged. If she were, say an immigrant from Guinea, the media would have scrutinized her background and divulged her abortion, her out-of-wedlock children by Menard, her faked pregnancy, and her and her husband's infidelities. As it stands, she's presented as the quintessential American political beauty. Only in America is this possible.

But, by not doing so, it just casts her in a very bad light," said FBI Special Agent Eric Gonzalez, who confirmed for CNN the statement he made to the Anchorage Daily News. "There is just no truth to those rumors out there in the blogosphere."

Gonzalez told The Los Angeles Times that there was "no wiggle room" in his comments for any kind of inquiry.
