Michele Bachmann solidifies pro-life credibility by speaking out about miscarriage. That sound you hear is Sarah Palin banging her head against the wall.

Courtesy of the Washington Post:

So this is what an “evangelical feminist” looks like.

During a week of speculation in the religion blogosphere about how Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann embodies the term, the GOP presidential candidate hinted at why that worldview may inform her politics and connect her to constituents.

At a South Carolina campaign event Wednesday night, she shared that she became certain of her antiabortion beliefs after having a miscarriage.

“Part of our faith is standing for the area of life. and we are completely committed,” Bachmann said of herself and her husband. “After our second child was born, we became pregnant with a third baby, and it was an unexpected baby, but of course we were delighted to have this child. And the child was coming along, and we ended up losing that child. And it was devastating for both of us, as you can imagine if any of you have lost a child.”

“At that moment we didn’t think of ourselves as overly career-minded or overly materialistic. When we lost that child, it changed us. And it changed us forever.”

“And so we made a commitment that no matter how many children were brought into our life we would receive them, because we’re committed to life. And we didn’t know it at that time that we’d be foster parents and that one day we’d be parents of 28 children, but we are extremely grateful for that opportunity because you can get money wrong, but you can’t get life wrong. And I am committed to life.”

You just know that somewhere Sarah is screaming, "A miscarriage?  That's all it takes? Dammit I actually HAD one of those!"

But instead of taking the simple route, Palin faked a Readers Digest version of a pregnancy, and is now saddled with raising a special needs child as a result of her desperate gamble to get the kind of pro-life status that Bachmann just received by talking about a child to whom she DIDN'T give birth.

The irony is just too rich!

Now I am certainly NOT a Michele Bachmann fan, but this is yet another illustration of just how much more intelligent she is than the Grizzled Mama from the north.

(P.S. How much would you NOT like to be the Palin family refrigerator today?)

There was almost a whiff of desperation in the publicist's plea with us last night to promote the film online and through social media. For while there's every possibility Palin is timing the announcement of her candidacy to coincide with The Undefeated hitting theaters July 15, it's hard to shake the feeling that ship may have already sailed.

Bachmann didn't raise 28 children and wasn't the mother of 28 children. And how do we know that the miscarriage wasn't an abortion? We're letting her get away with saying whatever she wants, and no one challenges her.

There are LOTS of women who have had miscarriages. I know. It was devastating. I came to believe that life begins at conception (at least for a while- nowadays I don't think about that so much one way or the other). However, that does not end the debate and answer the question regarding elective abortions. EVEN IF you believe a fetus is a person, or a life, there is the quesiton: Does any life has the right to impose it's existence on another person? I believe in the "right to die," although I think it should be not considered easy. I think there are times euthenasia is the kind thing to do - but I think anyone should be careful and the slippery slope concerns me. And I think a mother has the right to decide if she is willing to care for the life inside her for 9 months.

<<“Part of our faith is standing for the area of life. and we are completely committed,” Bachmann said of herself and her husband.>>

Once again Bachmann shows her lack of logic. It’s understandable that she’d be devastated by the miscarriage of a child she wanted (despite not having planned it), but to translate that into a firm conclusion that everyone else in the world should have to bear every child they got pregnant with, no matter the circumstances, is totally illogical.

And as far as “standing for the area of life,” or “being committed to life,” that doesn’t just mean popping out the puppies. It also includes making sure those children are fed, clothed, loved, educated, etc – which not every woman who gets pregnant is equipped to do just by virtue of the fact that she got impregnated. Funny how these Pro-Lifers don’t give a crap about the kid once it’s out of the womb.

And if someone wants to “stand for life” in the kind of total way Pro-Lifers proclaim, they really should be opposing wars, capital punishment, etc, etc.

    Hypocrites.

Here is a little of the Wikipedia entry for Michele:

She graduated from Anoka High School in 1974 and, after graduation, spent time working on a kibbutz in Israel. In 1978 she graduated from Winona State University with a B.A.

In 1979, Bachmann was a member of the first class of the O.W. Coburn School of Law, a part of Oral Roberts University (ORU). In 1986 she received a J.D. degree from Oral Roberts University.

She beats Sarah on that Israel thing, working on a kibbutz.
She also went to Oral Roberts University, where she met her Christian husband. I think that they were pro-life from the moment that they entered Oral Roberts University.

The Oral Roberts Law School was absorbed by Regent University, called Pat Robertson's Bible based college in Virginia. These people are outspoken about their pro-life issues. Michele's story may be true, but she had to sign on to pro-life beliefs before that time.

I would never call Michelle Bachmann intelligent. She got her law degree at an affiliate of Oral Roberts University. It's where she worked with a professor to formulate her vision of colonial America, the founding fathers, and their kind, protective treatment of slaves (not setting them free for their own, don't you know?). It's where she honed her belief that America was founded by devout evangelicals. Bozo that she is.

Still, you sure hit the nail on the head with precision. Sarah would have saved herself a lot of grief just admitting the miscarriage/abortion she had.

The only sad part of this whole Trig saga is that Trig himself will never have the truly supportive family he needs. You know Child Protective Services would never go after a wealthy family - particularly when they are travel between two states.

I had a miscarriage when our first child was 15 months old. It was devastating, however it did not make me decide that other women should HAVE to carry their child to full term. Bachmann was fortunate (if you can call it that, given the husband) to have a good paying job and an employed husband. A lot of women do not, and find themselves in circumstances less than ideal. I STILL want to know how long those 23 foster children lived with them. How did she "raise 28 kids" while employed full time, and politicking??

Unless Michelle also did the same thing, i think you're referring to the Wrong wingnut, that was Rick Santorum, a biologial male, who took his stillborn child home, to spend the night with the other children, you know, just to introduce him to his siblings, and drive home how bringing a corpse into your home strengthens your pro life stance, even if you don't have ovaries, a womb, and a vagina nor do you have to carry the child to term.

His lovely wife, who is a biological female, even wrote about it in a book. Thank God, they have the means and money to pay for the psychological damage that forcing kids to sleep in a home, even for one night, with the body of a stillborn child.

So...since God 'took' two of Sarah's 'babies' and only one of Michelle's, does that mean He loves Michelle more? Or does it work the other way? In either case, Michelle can get even more of Sarah's goat if one of the Bachmann offspring produces a DS baby by next spring and makes her a grandma.

Heck I bet about 10-20% of the women in Congress have experienced a pregnancy loss of some sort, and an equal number of men through their romantic partners. I bet 90-100% of them have have someone they care for experience pregnancy loss. And I bet the number are substantially the same across political affiliations (so long as age is accounted for).

Miscarriages are sufficiently common that many women choose to wait until after the third month (the time of greatest risk) to announce to the world they are pregnant.

I'm not clear on how admitting you had a spontaneous abortion (the medical term for pregnancy loss between 6 weeks and 20 weeks*) makes you true blue pro-life.

*definitions vary on the exact range for a miscarriage. I always thought it was 6-13 weeks, but that just turns out to be the range when MOST happen. Wikipedia & others say 20 weeks in one place and 24 weeks in another.

This recent article in the Guardian has describes locking women up who have miscarriages.

"Outcry in America as pregnant women who lose babies face murder charges"

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/24/america-pregnant-women-murder-charges

Rennie Gibbs is accused of murder, but the crime she is alleged to have committed does not sound like an ordinary killing. Yet she faces life in prison in Mississippi over the death of her unborn child.

Gibbs became pregnant aged 15, but lost the baby in December 2006 in a stillbirth when she was 36 weeks into the pregnancy. When prosecutors discovered that she had a cocaine habit – though there is no evidence that drug abuse had anything to do with the baby's death – they charged her with the "depraved-heart murder" of her child, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Gibbs is the first woman in Mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of her unborn baby. But her case is by no means isolated. Across the US more and more prosecutions are being brought that seek to turn pregnant women into criminals.

I believe her on that score, although I would not vote for her as a candidate.

What I don't believe is the tie in to the 28 Up Parenthood Fable. No, there is no tie in. Being a temporary guardian/mentor to a revolving door of multiple teens IS NOT the same as being a parent.

It is commendable, no matter what the impetus. But it is not like being a parent. It's more like a project of compassion. Or whatever.

Anyone who has been a parent understands that compassion is only a part of the whole Aggravation, commitment, frustration, loneliness, fear, sheer terror, resentment, hope, confusion, regrouping, reinventing oneself, giving up your dreams, fighting for your dreams so that they might one day benefit your children, asking for forgiveness, doling out same; oh God, paying for gas, the mortgage, the heat, the groceries, the clothes; the memory of their tiny, stinky little hands patting your cheek when they were little carrying you through the teenage years when their hands, their heart, are stuck under their butts on the couch as they declare you Old, Ugly, Stupid with their eyes. . .only to reward you later, much later, when they say, Mom (Dad) you were right. Thanks.

A long trajectory of time is involved in being a real parent. There is no substitute.

As admirable as Bachmann was in taking these girls into her house, it was not all that different from taking in a bunch of exchange students over time. I've done that, also, too, a lot. I've been an exchange student myself, twice.

    Not the same.

And as for the miscarriage to bolster the pro-life street creds? Well, that also happened to me, without the same result. But not the same as giving birth to a child with serious life changing birth defects. I have done that, too.

And Sarah Palin, on that basis, is the worst kind of fraud. None of her behavior prior, before and since the birth of Trig has been the least kind of believable to me. And I have witnessed parents of disabled children who failed them. The conflict can be immense, not only for yourself, but your marriage, and any siblings born before.

These folk personally known to me did a lot better job than Palin does, under far worse circumstances. Their stories are far more compelling, more inspiring, even where they failed.

That's why parents like me, and Dunn, simply cannot accept the story of Palin's pregnancy and birth of Trig, nor her behavior following. We have been there. We know the details. We know the potholes, the speed bumps. And none of what she has related rings even remotely true, over a wide field of variable families.

    Total fiction.

As soon as I saw the photo of Bachmann with her hands apart, I heard this caption in my mind:

I caught an anchovie once, and it was THIS BIG!

my deepest sympathy to the good folks of Minnesota
To have to face the humiliation of Michele Bachmann.
We alaskan feel your pain, but she is taking Stupid box of rocks for brains Palins limelight away and that is a relief for us. But we do share the same agony every time they speak their gibberish. Sad to say.

  71. You know--a few months ago, Bachmann detailed this similar complete "revelation," how she went from a being a "Jimmy Carter Democrat" to a conservative Republican--all because she read a book by Gore Vidal. Mr. Vidal was (in Bachmann's words) "snotty."

Imagine! Gore Vidal snooty. SAY IT AIN'T SO!

What's going to be rum luck for Bachmann, the internet has a long memory, and there are enough twisted people with enough time on their hands to keep track & start cataloging all these "revelations."

But I have to say--these stupid bastards who fetishize zygotes and insist pre-21 week fetuses "feel pain" (absent a central nervous system) infuriate me. Women who get pregnant have enough to consider/think/worry about, without these jerks whipping up patent horseshit, screwing with women's emotions.....

MicMac, Wow. Awesome description of parenthood: "... oh God, paying for gas, the mortgage, the heat, the groceries, the clothes; the memory of their tiny, stinky little hands patting your cheek when they were little carrying you through the teenage years when their hands, their heart, are stuck under their butts on the couch as they declare you Old, Ugly, Stupid with their eyes. . .only to reward you later, much later, when they say, Mom (Dad) you were right. 73. Just logged back on after being out for the evening; thanks Jude for clarifying that it was Santorum who took their baby which died home for overnight, and thanks to Bill who responded to my comment about whether Sarah would be invited/allowed to speak at the RNC.

  75. Poor, poor Michelle. In some states, she may have been under investigation and perhaps arrested for her "miscarriage". Some new laws the pro lifers want implemented is to have professionals investigate all miscarriages as possible murders.

honestly, these people. Thanks to Daisydem and Jude for reminding us of Rick Santorum's experiment in cold fusion. That also brings to mind George W. Bush's memoir describing how his mother (Barbara) kept a miscarried fetus in a jar.

  78. Is it true that the foster children Michelle Bachmann took in were pregnant teenagers? So where did those girls come from? Is it possible she was providing foster care through one of those crisis pregnancy fronts? Seems like that would be the logical route for Miss Pro-Life. She would not only get to claim credit for being such a great humanitarian but she would also have the opportunity to indoctrinate those pregnant teenagers. She could maybe also claim 2 for 1 if there is a child in utero. Or, if she kept the girl for a while after the baby was born, same thing.

Having been a social worker who dealt with that same population, I can also say that the turnover in foster care can be huge. It's said some of those girls only stayed short times. Fits my experience. No way is anybody raising those girls, particularly under those circumstances. Foster parents are lucky to avoid mayhem with some such girls.

No one will say it - so I will. A miscarriage is not a life changing experience, other than the fact that life would change dramatically were it not for the miscarriage. Bachmann and Palin act like they are the only women who have ever been pregnant and had to deal with the consequences. You don't hear Nancy Pelosi going on about how she had 6 kids. I don't believe their bullshit impresses many women. It must be about bullshitting the men.

I liked Vidal's response to Bachmann: "She is too stupid to deserve an answer."

Rolling Stone this week has a long profile of Bachmann by Matt Tabibi. It's chilling stuff, not unlike the other recent profiles in the Daily Beast and the Guardian, that goes over at length her hypocrisy, her homophobia, xenophobia, and religious bigotry, making the case for why Bachmann is wholly unprepared for the Presidency and lacks the maturity and gravitas to hold the office.

Unfortunately, the people who believe in Bachmann don't care about any of those things, and even if a Bachmann supporter read the Rolling Stone article, they wouldn't believe it. It doesn't apply to their world.

    Anon 12:48am,

I have to disagree with your statement that a miscarriage is not a life-changing experience. I have one living child and I have had 5 miscarriages and I can tell you that even one miscarriage is a life-changing experience. Your statement trivializes the an event that is absolutely devastating and never forgotten. Obviously you've never experienced the pain that comes from losing a baby... obviously you don't know what it's like to watch what would have been your baby's due date approach on the calendar knowing that there will be no baby. And obviously you don't know what it's like to go through extensive INVASIVE medical testing and blood work to try and pinpoint the cause of your fertility problems only to find that there is nothing wrong and they are happening without any explanation whatsoever.

I think you owe me and anyone else who has ever suffered a loss an apology for your insensitive statement.

That said, I am disgusted with Michele Bachman for using her miscarriage for political benefit. It makes me question whether she had a miscarriage or an abortion, because I don't think someone who had a miscarriage would use it to their advantage the way she is.
