Uh oh! Shelly let her batshit get out of control and now it might be about to backfire.

Courtesy of NPR:

Even as Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann backs off some from an inflammatory claim that a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer led to mental retardation in a young girl, two bioethicists are turning up the heat.

Yes, the leading group of pediatricians in this country slammed Bachmann and said "there is absolutely no scientific validity" to statements that the vaccine against human papilloma virus is dangerous or causes retardation.

And the Minnesota Republican has conceded she's not a medical professional, saying in a radio interview: "I am not a doctor, I'm not a scientist, I'm not a physician. All I was doing is reporting what this woman told me last night at the debate."

But Dr. Steven Miles, a bioethicist at the University of Minnesota, has ponied up $1,000 if the mother Bachmann talked about can produce medical proof that her daughter suffered mental retardation from the HPV vaccine, the Star Tribune reports. "These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm," Miles told the paper. "It's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed."

And Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania has placed what amounts to a $10,000 bet on the issue.

I think that we can safely assume that there will be no VP slot open for Bachmann when Mitt Romney finally gets the nomination. I don't think the GOP is ever going to allow anybody to get that spot without much MORE stringent vetting than a certain Alaska politician was subjected to.

And for all intents and purposes we are watching that vetting play out right before our eyes.

I don't know about you, but I find it pretty entertaining!

Im convinced MB is a deliberate ploy of the democrats to distract from their dirty dealings. Sarah is an unintentional distraction that helps democrats get away with scams. MB is probably a plant.

OR not. But the former is correct.

    From 'me again':

One thing I just found out over the weekend--I was asking my person from Sarah's circle why the hell I'd heard about Willow tooling around in a seventy thousand dollar SUV. Last I knew, Sarah and Todd were determined not to have another PR fiasco courtesy of Willow and were really trying to toe the line with her...including telling her she needed to get a job if she wanted a car. They said if she saved a certain percentage they would foot the rest. (I guess that's "toeing the line" in the land of Palin)

Well miss Willow decided to play dirty, probably because that's all she sees everyone else in her family doing. She basically demanded the use of her vehicle of choice "or else". Todd called her bluff--"or else what?"

Turns out Willow came up with a pretty grown up threat. "I bet lots of people would be interested to hear whose purse I really found an ultrasound picture in".

I think Bristol's Trig pregnancy might have been "outed" very late, and by Willow who was snooping through Bristol's purse.

    ---------------------------

Do it Willow ! There's 7 figures waiting for you, and you alone, for the complete, true story of everything palin. You have been there on the inside for your whole life, you know where all the skeletons are buried.

Just think what you can do with $1,000,000 or more ? Get the hell out from under your mother's thumb for one thing and live a life of your own. Buy a house in Florida, where the weather is great year-round; endless fees for appearing on talk shows promoting your tell-all book.

The money will be rolling in Willow - just imagine the possibilities !

    Do it WWillow !!

I'm so glad that bioethicists are coming forward on some of these issues. I know they're educated elitists but look what happened when the uneducated harpy coined "death panels." They should have cobbled together a few million dollars back then to bribe her to shut up. In addition, someone in this country (it certainly wasn't any of the GOP contenders the other night) has got to say that it isn't right to let people die because they don't have insurance.

With regard to Shelly, I was actually rather amazed that she was sounding pretty reasonable (well, reasonable for a tea baggot) there for awhile. I really thought she was toning down her crazy with an eye towards the general election. Unlike Perry and Palin, I think Shelly might have had some inkling that she isn't seen by all as the Great White Hope. But poor Shelly couldn't keep the crazy contained for the long term.

Isn't it amazing how the GOP/TP by putting forth idiots like Palin and Bachmann has totally repaired the glass ceiling shattered by Hillary Clinton in 08? I'll never see a woman president of the US in my lifetime thanks to those two, the party of no, and the mainstream media who acknowledges them as serious contenders. They should be treated with contempt (along with the likes of many of the GOP men) for being the know-nothings that they are.

It is quite entertaining but the only problem is is that people will now believe this shit because it is now in their heads. Us "elitists" won't believe it but by god the masses of ignorant people will. It is a shame that they would let their daughters suffer for their stupidity.

I have a co-worker whose 23 year old daughter had cervical cancer. By the time they found out it had already spread. She is fine at the moment but will not be able to have kids.

I guess in their minds she probably deserved it because she slept with someone before she got married. Fools!

Bachmann Warns Against "Radical Elements All Across the Middle East Region" While Supporting Terror Cult MEK

LA Times reports on Bachmann speech at a GOP convention in Los Angeles:

It was on matters of foreign policy that Bachmann seemed to take her stump message further, offering a critical view of the so-called “Arab Spring” and voicing sympathy for Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak. “We saw President Mubarak fall while President Obama sat on his hands,” Bachmann said. “And we’ve also seen now the rise of radical elements all across the Middle East region.”

As we have reported months ago, Bachmann supports The People's Mujahideen Organisation of Iran (PMOI, also known as the MEK)

For many celebrities, Jay Leno's Tonight Show is a fairly gentle outlet for publicity. But as Michele Bachmann discovered, Leno can have a sharp edge when he chooses to unsheath it.

If the Republican presidential contender was expecting a few jokes and some good PR, she didn't get it. Instead, the late-night talkshow host asked pointed questions about Bachmann's disputed objections to the HPV vaccine and gay marriage in an awkward encounter that showed Bachmann to be evasive under Leno's probing, while her own attempts at jokes fell flat.

    This is a hoot:

At one point, Leno told Bachmann: "You seem strident in your views." No, said Bachmann, "I'm convicted." Leno corrected her: "You don't get convicted until after you've been in office."

Ever since she made the announcement in 2008 that Democratic Congressmember should be investigated for "unAmerican" beliefs and actions, she has proven consistently that she is a drink, a bag of fries, and a sandwich short of a Happy Meal.

This latest issue about HPV vaccination is only the latest of a long list of Bachmann's misstatements, inaccuracies, and outright lies that should disqualify her from even being re-elected by her state as a representative, not to mention keeping her out of the WH either as president or VP. She is every bit as nutty and ignorant as Sarah Palin. It's a sad commentary that either of these women were ever considered for politics, as they are a major embarrassment to women, period. Of course, Rick Perry appeals to the same ill-informed and irrational group of voters, so he is no better.

Many fervently believe that the common MMR vaccine causes autism, and indeed there is a dramatic increase in MMR because kids are not vaccinated. I am sure there are avid readers of this blog who believe it too. That HPV vaccine causes retardation is the same. People want to believe that its not their fault, that someone or something caused the problem. Just rambling, sorry. MB remains a stale fruitcake.

Michele Bachmann Targeted By California Gay Rights Activists With Madonna Flash Mob Dance Routine

Gay rights activists protested Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann's appearance at the California Republican Party convention Friday by staging a flash mob-style dance routine.

The soundtrack, Madonna's "Like a Prayer," was meant to call attention to the Minnesota congresswoman's anti-gay rhetoric and the controversial therapy methods reportedly practiced at the Christian counseling clinic she and her husband own, according to the Courage Campaign.

"Politicians like Rep. Bachmann need to understand that you can't simply "pray the gay away," the group stated in a release.

Bachmann was also pressed about her views on homosexuality during an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno Friday.

"That whole 'pray the gay away' thing, I don't get it," Leno said.

Bachmann tried to deflect Leno's question with a joke, pointing to her hair and saying, “When I heard that I really thought it was like kind of a mid-life crisis line, like, 'Pray away the gray.'"

    The joke fell flat.

The vetting occurring is, in part, thanks to your efforts to expose Palin. Regardless of what the MSM do to try to diminish those who doggedly pursue Palin's issues, they are the ones to blame. They did absolutely nothing to report the truth. Her flying monkeys wouldn't exist if journalists had done their jobs from the start. The problem is that when others do their job for them, they get defensive and take shots at those stating the truth. What they should be do is clearly and unequivocally state that they were too busy getting website hits and were afraid of her flying monkeys to report the truth and do the heavy lifting required in journalism.

When one of the reporters writes that this information could be found on the internet, one has to wonder why they didn't follow those leads? Less than 6 months ago, this woman was a front runner. They had 3 years to report the truth. We had to hear about Clinton's BJ for 3 years, and he never put himself front and center as family person of the year or tried to insert religion into politics. Did we really need to hear about a BJ or the BJ coverup for 3 years? If it was fine then, it is fine now!

I think it would make a great cover story if Matt Talibi would write an article about all the recent books, movie, etc. titled, "How Did They Miss the Obvious?". He can talk about the problem with the media and their 'shiny object' coverage of Palin.

I hope McGuiness comes out swinging at the media and those reporters who are currently trying to diminish him, especially the one from Slate.

Who knew? Sarah Palin loves brown sugar

McGinniss, a best-selling author and award-winning investigative reporter, moved next door to Palin last year to research material for his exposé, which did not sit well with the former Alaska governor and Republican Party presidential hopeful.

Several juicy titbits from the book were leaked this week (I suspect the leak was deliberate on McGinniss's part), including a claim that Palin had a one-night stand with a college basketball player, Glen Rice, who later became an NBA star.

At the time, in 1987, Palin, née Heath, was a sports reporter for an Anchorage, Alaska, TV station. The book quotes a friend of Palin, who was 23 at the time, as saying she "had a fetish for black guys for a while". As you've probably figured out, Rice is black.

McGinniss says Rice confirmed when he interviewed him last year that he did indeed get it on with Palin.

There is nothing wrong with Palin wanting a taste of brown sugar, but as a journalist assigned to interview the then 20-year-old basketball player - who was in town for a tournament - it was unprofessional behaviour.

The book also repeats allegations that she had a six-month affair with her husband Todd's business partner in the mid-'90s. Palin has repeatedly denied this.

If the allegations in the book are true, Palin must be relieved that she didn't make it all the way to the White House because the stink caused by the skandaal would be even worse than it is.

Right now people are just laughing at the hard-core conservative who is always incredibly judgmental of everyone else but was apparently really wild when she was younger.

The book also talks about Palin being seen snorting cocaine while snowboarding with friends and reports that she smoked dagga with one of her professors while she was in college.

All of this may explain Mama Grizzly's hunting and fishing hobbies: she needs to expend some of that energy that has obviously been building up all these years while she was putting on the good-girl act. Although experts say she's a phony and couldn't shoot a rifle or hunt a squirrel to save her life.

So far Palin has kept mum about the book and the allegations. The smart thing would be to continue to do so, ride out the storm and ignore everyone because, as I have said before in this space, Americans collectively have attention deficit disorder. In a week or two, they'll have forgotten about Palin and will be on to the next big news story - an earthquake, a hurricane, another famous person's sex scandal.

But knowing how she likes to run her mouth, she won't be quiet for long. She'll be out there posting videos on her site, vehemently defending her character and inviting even more ridicule into her life.

The New York Times trashed the book on Thursday, but we all know that thing about smoke and fire. You don't have that many allegations about you and not a single one is true.

The big mistake she made ( among many) is telling lies about the vaccine. She should have just stuck with the line that it shouldn't be mandated. I am very liberal and I don't believe in vaccine mandates UNLESS the illness has potential to kill other people. I have HPV as millions of women do and I don't have cancer!
Vaccines aren't always safe. I am not up on the science of this one but I know in general I don't believe in mandates.
I don't think she was acting crazy by talking against vaccine mandates. Other vaccines have caused illness in people and drug companies aren't always honest.
Believe me, I think she's nuts, but she had a point about the no mandate for vaccines. She went too far!

You don't even need the dry ice. The oxygen you breathe in comes back out as CO2. So eventually all the oxygen will be replaced by the co2 you exhale and of course kill you.

Apparently Bachman thinks she will evade all responsibility by saying, "I am not a doctor, I'm not a scientist, I'm not a physician. All I was doing is reporting what this woman told me last night at the debate."

The problem is that by repeating this baseless claim, she is potentially jeopardizing public health. We expect leaders to have better judgement ... and also not to be batshit crazy.

What I find most strange is that this wanna-be president repeated as fact a comment that a woman in a hand-shaking line blurted out in passing. With no fact checking.

  47. I have to side with Bachmann (choke)...sort of... on this although her wording was unfortunate.

The government shouldn't be mandating vaccines or any drug. Perry's executive order had nothing to do with caring about the health of girls and everything to do with Merck. By the way, why weren't boys included in Perry's mandate? Gardasil is not just for girls.

I wonder how many Vioxx and Fosamax patients would tell us to trust Merck and the scientists who helped get those drugs to market.

"The following adverse events have been spontaneously reported during post-approval use of GARDASIL. Because these events were reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not possible to reliably estimate their frequency or to establish a causal relationship to vaccine exposure."

So even if there is a causal relationship, it's not possible to establish it. Great!

Dealing with pharmaceutical companies is not much different than dealing with the big coal and oil companies when it comes to toxins and environmental contamination and resulting health problems. It took 32 years before the FDA finally pulled Darvon/Darvocet off the market.

Gardasil doesn't provide 100% protection against all viruses that cause cervical cancer. It hasn't been on the market that long and all risks may not be known yet. Parents and doctors should be making the decision about whether the vaccine is appropriate for children in their care.

I am furious she did not find it unethical to repeat in the public sphere a claim that was not fact checked. How did this idiot make it through law school? Where did she go to school? There should be an inquiry and the school should be shamed for graduating her.

Finally there is a backlash for the uninformed crap that comes out of people’s mouths. Unfortunately, somebody should have ponied up $10,000 for Palin to prove the death panel claim.

The smartest thing that Bachmann did was to hire Ed Rollins. The smartest thing that Ed Rollins did was to quit her campaign. The people she hires in top spots stay just long enough to find out that she is far more stupid than even her reputation suggests. Then they run just as fast as they can away from her.

Bachmann tries to defend her idiotic remarks by claiming that she's no "doctor, scientist, or physician!"

(Shelley honey, I've got news for you: nobody on the planet is dumb enough to confuse you with a doctor, scientist, or physician. By the way, physicians ARE doctors, you moron.)

She doesn't necessarily believe what this anonymous woman said, she was just passing it along. Hey, we can't hold Bachmann responsible for what some OTHER woman said, can we?

    That's called "gossip."

So, Bachmann will mindlessly repeat - I know, I know, EVERYTHING she does is mindless - any random bullshit that someone whispers in her ear, without any thought, pause, or discretionary introspection.

Yeah, why don't we make HER president?

Bachmann, that precious little dear, simply has no control over the stuff that comes out of her corn dog hole. When she opens her gaping yaw, her insane utterances burst out before she realizes that she has even said anything. She is then faced with the task of trying to explain remarks that she herself scarcely remembers and only vaguely comprehends.

Bachmann is a creature of the moment and that moment is always NOW! The past is unimportant to her and the future is simply some evil time if Obama re-elected and some Shangri-La with $2/gal. gas if she becomes president.

This woman should NEVER be given any responsibilities greater than organizing fundraising car washes for the local little league team.

However, I'm sure she'd find a way to say something really embarrassing and controversial in that post as well.

Thankfully, her own voluminous record of buffoonery will keep her FAR away from being the nominee for either POTUS or VPOTUS.

    Amen.

Herman Cain is too stupid to be anything. The man is a total idiot and we don't need more idiots.

In his announcement speech, he ranted about people not knowing the Constitution and what it says and then proceeded to quote from the Declaration of Independence. He didn't know the difference.

He's been unemployed for the better part of the last decade though, so he needs a job. Just don't make it the VP.

I think Bristol's Trig pregnancy might have been "outed" very late, and by Willow who was snooping through Bristol's purse.

80% of the population has HPV and symptoms disappear naturally.

    Anon @ 7:24,
    You wrote:
“Better recheck your chemistry. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is used by plants and is broken down to supply oxygen (O2) to us mammals.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the deadly gas.”

Termites also eat wood, fish breathe underwater, thermophiles thrive in hihgly alkaline waters that are far too hot for humans, and dung beetles eat shit. Do you contend that just because something is OK for another organism totally unlike humans that it is therefore NOT deadly to us?

This is from Wikipedia’s entry on Carbon Dioxide:

“Carbon dioxide is toxic to the heart and causes diminished contractile force.

Toxicity and its effects increase with the concentration of CO2, here given in volume percent of CO2 in the air:

    ▪ 1% can cause drowsiness with prolonged exposure.
    ▪ At 2% it is mildly narcotic and causes increased blood pressure and pulse rate, and causes reduced hearing.
    ▪ At about 5% it causes stimulation of the respiratory center, dizziness, confusion and difficulty in breathing accompanied by headache and shortness of breath. Panic attacks may also occur at this concentration.
    ▪ At about 8% it causes headache, sweating, dim vision, tremor and loss of consciousness after exposure for between five and ten minutes.

NIOSH also states that carbon dioxide concentrations exceeding 4% are immediately dangerous to life and health although physiological experiments show that such levels can be tolerated for some time.”

That sounds pretty healthy to me, n’est-ce pas?

I tell you what, if you feel that carbon dioxide is harmless to humans, let’s get ahold of some and let you breathe all that you can take at say, oh about 12% volume. Since it’s natural and harmless to plants, you’ll be fine. Maybe you can prove that it is indeed harmless to humans and all those scientific elitists are just trying besmirch the good name of CO2.

Afterwards you can celebrate your success dining on a banquet of shit and see what happens. I mean, if it’s OK for dung beetles, then it’s not toxic to us, right?

WHO needs to go back to chemistry class?

My suspicion is that in the back of her addled mind, Bachmann figured, "Well, everyone ELSE is lying so why can't I, without it causing such a big fuss? Sarah said there were "death panels" in the healthcare reform legislation, and got away with it."

and: to hear anyone speculating about Herman Cain as ANYthing in the Republican party, is so laughably ridiculous.

Watching just how suicidal the actions of most of them have been over the last couple of years-- willing to sacrifice whatever is needed to bring down a black President--does anyone seriously believe they'd allow ANOTHER black guy NEAR the office of the President?

It just kills me to see how utterly naive and misled people are.

link please...and not something put out by Merck.

Gardasil does not prevent ANY cancers. It's all BS.

I have to agree with MB on this one. Rick Perry made a huge mistake making this vaccine mandatory before it had been thoroughly tested. To force it on CHILDREN is horrendous.

Who volunteered their children to see if it was safe? The employees of Merck?

Dr. Jacques Moritz, director of gynecology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, said he would not offer the Gardasil vaccine to patients when good cervical cancer screening techniques and treatments exist. He has also chosen not to have his 11-year-old daughter get the HPV shot because of his concerns.

Sadly, if the child/woman carries the HPV virus - then the Gardasil vaccine will trigger the disease and could CAUSE cancer.

routine pap smears are still the best prevention against cervical cancer.

It's been proven that 32 women/girls died because of the vaccine. There are 100's more that can not prove the vaccine was the direct link.

Don't take the chance. Think for yourselves and don't get an unnecessary vaccine that could harm you or your loved ones.

There is documented proof that the HPV vaccine has caused harm, though probably not retardation. And it is way too early to know long term effects.

    Entertaining, yes, but very dangerous.
This vaccine can prevent one of the worse cancers in women, just because the HPV virus is transmitted by having sex, Teh Crazies come up with lies to fan their base.
Say what you want about Bachman, Palin etc... Their followers take what they say as the gospel truth, and at the same time, their kids are sexually active and unprotected. For some reason, Bristol and Levi come to mind, and when parents have their head in the sand, parnoia will help the number of teenage pregnacies to rise, and the number of ovarian cancer cases rise as well. Do we need children of single mothers orphaned because of ignorance?

I researched this, and made sure my daughters got it. The risks are minor, and mental retardation isn't one of them.

Anon @ 7:24 and other times,
You stated that carbon monoxide is "not natural" which is just not true.

From the Wikipedia article on carbon monoxide:

"Carbon monoxide (CO), also called carbonous oxide, is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas which is slightly lighter than air. It is highly toxic to humans and animals in higher quantities, although it is also produced in normal animal metabolism in low quantities, and is thought to have some normal biological functions."

Carbon monoxide is no more or less natural than carbon dioxide. That it is the poisonous gas most present in auto exhaust is correct. However, BOTH carbon monoxide AND carbon dioxide are toxic to humans. Interestingly, even though more toxic to humans, carbon monoxide is "thought to have some normal biological functions."

    You stated:
"Carbon dioxide (CO2) is used by plants and is broken down to supply oxygen (O2) to us mammals."

As I read that statement, it sure seems like you are saying that since it is safe for plants, ergo it's safe for humans. I am reacting to what you wrote. I cannot divine what you meant to say, only what you actually said.

I assume that you also wrote the posts @ 1:34 & 1:35 which were directed at me, however, since you post only as "Anon" I really can't be sure that I AM writing to the same person. Why not adopt a handle when you post? It is always awkward to address "Anon" to a crowd full of Anons.

Levi says Bristol didn’t stop talking about having a baby after her mother’s new son, Trig, arrived.

Am I the only one who finds this phrasing suspect. Having read and re-read the sentence I think the odd phrasing supports that Sarah did NOT give birth to Trig. For those who will read Levi's book, please let us know if he speaks definitively about Sarah's pregnancy.
