Officials respond quickly as inflammatory rhetoric from Sarah Palin threatens to raise tensions between North and South Korea.

Courtesy of Korea Times:

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said she “looks forward to regime change” in North Korea while calling on South Korea to help the North when its regime is finally ousted.

“Being under the thumb of a dictator, the first victims of his regime are his own people,” said Palin during a keynote address at the 12th World Knowledge Forum in Seoul, Tuesday.

Palin, who was the vice presidential nominee of the Republican Party in 2008, made the comment in a Q&A session with Ritz Kahn of Al Jazeera English immediately after her speech.

The theme of this year’s forum is “The New Economic Crisis: Reforming Global Leadership & Asia’s Challenge.”

Regarding Palin’s remark, the Seoul government showed a cautious response.

Jo Byoung-jae, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said flatly “regime change is not a policy goal or the objective of this government.”

He said he is not criticizing Palin or her statement, but just stating as clearly as possible what the North Korea policy of Seoul is, adding, “I think it is safe to say that it is also not the policy goal of the U.S. government either.”

Palin’s statement drew attention as it came at a particularly precarious time for South and North Korean relations amid lingering tension on the Korean Peninsula.

I like how the Korean people are much too polite to just come out and say, "Bitch, shut the hell up!"

Leave it to Snowdrift Snooki to travel overseas and almost cause war to break out.

Why do people pay to hear her speak again?

I would instruct my Korean brothers and sisters to follow America's lead, and do what we are just now starting to do, ignore her wrinkled old ass!

Unbelievable. She thinks she is being all mavericky and telling it like it is. She is grandiose, is what she is. A legend in her own mind.

Buh bye, Sarah, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

You beat me to it Gryphen. I was just coming to post the link to the Korea Times article.

I LOVE the fact that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade pretty much 'bitch-slapped her' in the gracious South Korean way but drove home the point:

“I think it is safe to say that it is also not the policy goal of the U.S. government either.”

  7. And what about the "officials" in this country? Is there no one, no one at all who will go before the press, go on record, and say once and for all: this woman is not an American politician; she does not represent this country and any of its policies, domestic, or foreign, ever! Never! [AND SAY IT LOUDLY PLEASE SO MAYBE SHE WILL HEAR IT!]

So much for the theory that if we ignore Sarah she will go away, and she isn't worth the time and effort to try and follow and discredit her.

I would genuinely like to place a citizenship exam in front of her and watch her squirm and fail.

If there is a silver lining to the cloud that is this pimple on the ass of humanity, it is that while she thinks she has come up with something brilliant, the entire freakin' world laughs their asses off at this intellectual Lilliputian.

Educated people couldn't care less about what Palin's opinion is on anything. The media would be doing us all a service by ignoring her.
    Oghma (65.74.4.103) 10-12-2011 03:49
Once again. The WKF got her credentials wrong. She is NOT a United States politician nor a national leader. She cannot speak on matters of U.S. policy.
    Oghma (65.74.4.103) 10-12-2011 03:47
SHE'S A PRIVATE CITIZEN AND A CELEBRITY. This is very concerning for Americans. I find it troubling that the World Knowledge Forum fraudulently misrepresented her credentials. They publicly printed something that isn't true, in fact or in essence. SHAME ON THE WORLD KNOWLEDGE FORUM. At the expense of their own credibility and credential in the academic world. I can only imagine that there must be some kind of financial incentive from American news corporations to do this.
    Oghma (65.74.4.103) 10-12-2011 03:46
Most troubling is that Korean leadership feels it necessary to respond to her. Why? She's just a crazy uneducated American that Maleil Newspapers paid to speak.
    Oghma (65.74.4.103) 10-12-2011 03:44
Who does she think she's addressing? Does she have know nothing at all about Asia? It is extremely important for the world community to understand that SARAH IS NOT A POLITICIAN, HOLDS NO PUBLIC OFFICE, IS NOT A NATIONAL LEADER. In 2009, she resigned her position as governor of Alaska with barely two weeks notice, to the surprise of the administration and her family. SHE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE UNITED STATES - functionally or professionally.

This is why everyone who knows something about this Clear and Present Danger to us all has to bring her down.

Time for the republicans to bring out all the skeletons they know are in her closet.

Time especially for John McCain to call her out publicly on this. McCain has a lot to atone for; he has to start by condemning this statement.

She has to be silenced. She has to be made totally irrelevant. We can't wait for her to crash and burn on her own (though she's doing a pretty good job of it). Republicans have to be united in their condemnation of her spouting nonsense about topics she knows nothing about. Republicans made her; republicans have to unmake her.

Her idiocy is a threat to national and international security.

Dan Quayle misspelled potato and condemned a sit com character's lifestyle and was rarely heard from again. Palin spouts nonsense every time she opens her mouth and is a darling of the media, tolerated by republicans because she energizes their base, and considered a commentator on Fox News. She has got to be told in language even she can understand to go home and shut up.

There are any number of books on business etiquette in foreign countries. From what few pictures I have seen, she violated EVERY DAMN POINT. She was inappropriately dressed, not only in color but in style. She wore a pencil skirt that was tight and short, her legs were bare, she had open toed shoes, she crossed her legs while on the podium. YIKES. She is a fool.

I traveled extensively in Asia as a business executive. Prior to each trip. I reviewed the customs and etiquette, prepared questions and subjects that could be discussed in social settings, understood manners at table and practiced bowing, exchanging business cards, handshake etiquette etc.

She sat on stage in her white jacket, miniskirt, bare legs, hooker shoes and crossed her legs. BAD FORM. She insulted the audience. All of THEM.

    And then her speech. WTF.

How much time has Sec of State Hillary Clinton spent on the phone today trying to fix this mess?

Perhaps she could have at least visited some of the memorials, museums, monuments instead of going shopping with her multiply pregnant nasty daughter.

Guess she can no longer afford the man servant Jason Rechter to do advance. Or if he did this trip, he should retire.

Let's take a look at Sarah's foreign policy expertise at work shall we?

Trade missions back and forth with Russia, seeing Russia from land here in Alaska and keeping check on Putin when he rears his head.

Challenging President Obama to improve relations with Canada, cause ya know, we have such an estranged relationship with Canada. Oh, and they should turn their health care system over to the private sector.

Hong Kong. "The opposite of a common-sense conservative is a liberalism that holds that there is no human problem that government can’t fix if only the right people are put in charge." Pause for the WTF processing of that statement. Then appreciate her dexterity in explaining the financial crisis: We got into this mess because of government interference in the first place. The mortgage crisis that led to the collapse of the financial market, it was rooted in a good-natured, but wrongheaded, desire to increase home ownership among those who couldn’t yet afford to own a home. In so many cases, politicians on the right and the left, they wanted to take credit for an increase in home ownership among those with lower incomes. But the rules of the marketplace are not adaptable to the mere whims of politicians.

[Oh, and I love this]: On China’s relations with Taiwan, and other controversial issues - We simply cannot turn a blind eye to Chinese policies and actions that could undermine international peace and security. [Cue Sarah putting her nose in tight border issues she couldn't possibly understand in the Korea's too]

Telling Barbara Walters that there is going to be a massive need for housing on the West Bank for all the Jews flocking there in coming months.

Seeing India from her hotel room.

    Seeing Jerusalem from her SUV.

Visiting Alaska Air National Guard troops in Kuwait to make fun of John Kerry's long face, while Bristol planned to steal it.

I miss anything? That woman isn't just an idiot. She is a dangerous, ignominious idiot.

About our Sarah....Dems and Repubs alike, be afraid, be very afraid. She will be the salvation of our beloved country. Everyone must be very patient, She will be guided by Divine Providence and know exactly "how" and "when" to step in. Pray for Sarah and while you are at it, say a prayer for Kevin It's great to see how popular and well loved she is there.
    ===========
It's very uplifting for many of us to see her making America look good
    ================
When she was in Israel meeting with Netanyahu, the media didn't touch it. She is quietly slipping in all over the world. That's our brilliant Sarah!
    ===========

Wow..talk about deluded idiots!! Yes, I am afraid, very afraid, but not for the reason they seem to think I should be. I am afraid that there are people stupid enough to type the words "brilliant" and "Sarah" side by side.

    THANK YOU!

I was typing something similar when Blogger went flooey.

I swear, some of these comments in this post -- calling for the CIA to investigate her?! Hello - are you not aware that would be ILLEGAL?! -- are downright frightening. Chilling.

Calling for Palin's passport to be revoked? Just because she made an ass of herself overseas? She did NOT call for the overthrow of the U.S. government -- she did NOT call for S. Korea to bomb N. Korea -- she merely made an ass of herself.

Just like she did in India and Israel.

But the calls for Palin's passport are akin to calling for the U.S. government to shut her up. Are you familiar with the First Amendment? Do you not even see the irony in this?

Seriously, the ignorance and kneejerk reactions in this thread are as frightening as Palin's.

As for that publicity whore Nicole Wallace? My contempt for her is bottomless. She KNEW what Palin was, three years ago -- and she kept mum about it until she could make money off of it. She's as contemptible and venal as Palin.

Sarah Palin may well be guilty of sedition or at least well on her way. While we value freedom of speech, you still cannot yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre.

    Sedition is close to Treason.

Her passport can and should be taken away.

I dont know but I think she is close to behaving in a way that can get her prosecuted.

She will NOT stop! Untill she is legally forced to do so. Certainly there is cause for deep investigation and the FBI, CIA, Justice Dept. etc will be very quiet until they have a solid case.

I hate comparisons to Hitler, but I am reading, "In the Garden of the Beast"--- Ambassador Dodd and his daughter Martha in Berlin before World War II and Palin's mental illness, behavior and strategy are frighteningly similar.

Do NOT think it could not happen again !

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedition
The difference between sedition and treason consists primarily in the subjective ultimate object of the violation to the public peace. Sedition does not consist of levying war against a government nor of adhering to its enemies, giving enemies aid, and giving enemies comfort. Nor does it consist, in most representative democracies, of peaceful protest against a government, nor of attempting to change the government by democratic means (such as direct democracy or constitutional convention).
Sedition is the stirring up of rebellion against the government in power. Treason is the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or state, giving aid to enemies, or levying war against one's state. Sedition is encouraging one's fellow citizens to rebel against their state, whereas treason is actually betraying one's country by aiding and abetting another state. Sedition laws somewhat equate to terrorism and public order laws.

If Sarah goes around saying stupid things like that, I can't wait to see the candidates lining up to get her endorsement. I think that the phone calls that Todd received the other day were, "Dude, stay away! And tell your freakin' wife not to endorse me."

I didn't write to the World Knowledge Forum organizers. Why bother? They know who she is, or they wouldn't have extended an invitation.
The political influence of Franklin Graham/Samaritan's Purse cannot be discounted. Right now, South Korea is a hot zone for fundamentalist Christian "church building."

No, I wrote to a handful of the other Americans also attending that forum as speakers and Sarah's peers.
I said they endorse and validate her - whether they mean to or not - and let her shoplift their credibility and reputation by association.

I asked how why they would reduce the importance and prestige and validity of this kind of collaborative global think tank; and marginalize their own resume and reputation as academic elite and corporate leadership.

I said that obviously none of them were desperate for money, all gainfully employed and undoubtedly adequately compensated in their professional lives. That they could afford to forego one speaking fee on a matter of principle that reduces intelligence and affects national and world morale. That that very thing is in fact, contrary to the essence of the forum and the purpose for which they gather.
That endorsing Sarah Palin as a political leader and corporate expert on global affairs and policy brings their own wisdom into question.

That this isn't about politics nor making political statements, but that it's actually the opposite. This is about trade and financial expertise on a global level, the highest-caliber professional and academic knowledge base drawn from institutions around the world.

I got no replies. As far as I can tell, there were no cancellations of speakers.

Her poignant appeal on "corporate cronyism"? Stunningly stupid and compromising, more than anything else she said. Serious egregious faux pas. But she doesn't know it.
Look at the ticker scrolling across the bottom of the WKF website. You'll see the CHAEBOL represented there. THEY paid for this forum and _her speaker's fee_. THEY were her hosts. THEY invited her into their country. And that's why the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade was "blunt" - she totally slapped them in the face publicly. In front of their Chinese and Taiwanese peers. She didn't make America look bad (they expect us to be stupid and gauche), so much as she humiliated THEM and made THEM look bad.

Congress and President Obama will be sweating and working overtime to conclude trade agreements with any degree of satisfaction.
So shut up now, Republicans. Ya got your licks in. Probably at your own expense.

OMG !!! Read this excerpt from an article on the recent Korea speech from Yahoo News writer Mark Whittington:

    ----------------------

One of the calumnies directed against Palin is that she had allegedly not studied the issues or traveled very much abroad. This is a calumny because it is not true. Palin has been to India, Israel and Hong Kong in the last several years and has impressed the locals at every stop with her command of the issues facing Asia and the Middle East.

Given these facts, one wonders why her critics persist in depicting her as a naïf, when they are being polite about it?

In her Seoul speech, Palin opined that there will be a woman president someday in America and she looks forward to that day. This is a bitter sweet reminder to her admirers who also look forward to that day and have already put a name and face on that future chief executive.

She's Typhoid Mary now. There are trade agreements in review in Congress as we speak. Other uneasy diplomatic issues.
What Sarah has done is capable of unilaterally restarting the Korean Conflict.
I wonder if she and Todd know about the Armistice, that there never was an official end to that war? That we've been in a 'Cease Fire' with no peace treaty.

The World Knowledge Forum is partnered with Bain & Company, 47 offices in 30 countries. Their clients are "Korea, Inc." - the chaebol. This is who paid Sarah's speaking fees.

In their own country, in front of Korean goverment and international political leaders and business peers, Sarah Palin called them out.
She didn't embarrass herself. She embarrassed THEM.

Scolds them, tells them Americans want them to stop the chaebol; criticizes them for not getting into North Korea; and follows it up by flipping her middle finger at the Chinese for increased military power, promising that America’s gonna kick their asses anyway.
“We’re very thankful for America’s influence, I hope others are also, and America’s commitment to help protect freedom in this region.”

Intentionally representing herself as a U.S. politician and national leader. They called her an "envoy." From the French word, 'to send':
    1. A representative of a government who is sent on a special diplomatic mission.
    2. A minister plenipotentiary assigned to a foreign embassy, ranking next below the ambassador.
    3. A messenger; an agent.

Hooray for Sarah! Thank you for representing ME and MY president out there in the big wide world.

There has to come an end to this. There must BE a time that Sarah can't represent the U.S. government.
I HAVE A LEGAL RIGHT TO THE REPRESENTATION THAT I VOTED FOR. TO COME IN SIDEWAYS AND DISPLACE ELECTED OFFICIALS IS ILLEGAL AND UNPRECEDENTED IN THE U.S.

This is much worse than her running for president.

Sarah Palin visits South Korea, takes aim at elites

"Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin took aim Tuesday at the political elite in the United States, Europe and China, as she brought her criticisms of big government and "crony capitalism" to South Korea.

Days after announcing she would not run for president in 2012, Palin said there "will be a woman president of the United States of America, and I look forward to that day", but did not elaborate on why she did not enter the race.

The 2008 vice-presidential candidate told supporters last week she could help the Republican cause more by working to elect others.

In a wide-ranging speech to a forum in Seoul, the conservative commentator accused China of seeking to use its military influence in regional disputes and said she looked forward to the ousting of North Korea's regime.

Palin cited the Arab Spring as proof that new information technology was playing an "enormous role" in spreading cries for freedom.

"Technology means individuals have been empowered in ways they have never been empowered before in our entire history," she told the World Knowledge Forum hosted by Maeil Business Newspaper.

"Technology has taken power away from central authorities and provided individuals with more choices. We are no longer living in a top-down world. Now we are living in a bottom-up world, from entertainment and information to education."

But governments seemed to be going in the opposite direction, with the European Union in Brussels "dictating terms for the member states across the continent", she said.

In China, "where there have been some movements towards reform, the Communist Party still dictates to the Chinese what they can and what they can't do in so many respects", she added.

Even in the United States, the political elite "believe we just can't get along without them", Palin charged.

"Government officials like to push this idea because it gives them the opportunity to pick the economic winners and losers in our system... in other words, it gives them ultimate economic power.

"I just call it crony capitalism."

Palin said China has a reputation for wanting to exercise its military influence to sway territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

In North Korea, the first victims of the regime are the country's people, she said.

"That is so inherently unfair and unjust that I look forward to this entire region being able to rebuild, South Korea being able to assist North Korea when that regime is finally ousted."

    OH. GOD.

Sarah better hope the Far Right Conservative South AND North Koreans, in partnership with China - don't send their version of the Mafia to Wasilla to teach her a lesson.

Hmmmmm, I heard they're stealthy and ninja-like and far more intelligent than any Wasilla Hit Squad employed by Sarah and Todd.
Wonder if the Chinese and Koreans are rethinking any plans they might have to grow any business partnerships in Alaska now that they unequivocally know Sarah Palin is plotting "regime change"?

They know now, indeed, Sarah Palin has never cracked open a history book or read any current events other than People Magazine. I hope she is banned from their countries!

I feel sorry for the person who thought inviting Palin was a good idea, unemployed now, I bet! I also bet this invite was connected in some way with the Moonies - a cult very much like the Evangelical Fundies, and C4P/Sarah Pac - expert at scamming $$$ and enslaving followers.

Sarah Palin should NEVER AGAIN be allowed to speak in other countries about foreign affairs. She is even MORE ignorant about international affairs than about US affairs, and her ignorance about this country is abysmal.

Why is she allowed to go overseas and revile our president on foreign soil? What she has been doing amounts to sedition because she is just as divisive outside of the country as she is inside it. There is no question that her passport needs to be revoked and her name needs to be on a watch list. She is a sterling example of the homegrown ignorance that Courtland Milloy--a Washington Post columnist--has said is more of a threat to America's well-being than a terroristic attack.

We should have known that, as her star was fading completely after she announced that she wasn't running for president, she would try to find a way to stay relevant at any cost. I hope that the State Department will prevent any more such trips, no matter who she is speaking for. But just as importantly, I hope no other country will invite her as a speaker either.

So, Miss North Korea 2011 Sarah Palin whines: "That is so inherently unfair and unjust!"

    --------------

You know what is TRULY inherently unfair and unjust? I find it inherently unfair and unjust that a dumb ass like Sarah Palin has wasted as much of this country's valuable time as she has.

It's inherently unfair and unjust that she has trumpeted her "christian!!! family values" and "motherhood" far and wide, while her vulnerable teenagers were left in Wasilla unsupervised; her unmarried daughter has already been knocked up 3 times, the first time at age 15; and poor Trig was dumped off for the relatives to raise when his special needs became a hassle for Sarah.

It's inherently unfair and unjust that the American people were swindled by McCain grasping feebly for his last chance at Presidential glory, apparently willing to put the safety of this country at risk by accepting a VP candidate who clearly was a dozen crayons short of a box.

Do I sound pissed? I am. I'm sick of listening to the self-absorbed pity party ranting of this whiny, grifting, blood libel spewing, violence-loving, gun-toting, climbing-on-the-cross-to-crucify-herself liar, QUITTER, and all-around fucking idiot.
