Barney Frank will not seek reelection!

Courtesy of CNN: Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank, a prominent 16-term liberal Democrat and arch-enemy of political conservatives nationwide, will announce Monday he does not intend to seek re-election in 2012, according to a statement from Frank's office.

Frank, 71, will hold a news conference in his district to discuss the decision at 1 p.m.

Frank was a favorite of progressives in this country as he always told it like it was, and was impossible for conservatives to intimidate.

He has been a great asset to the Congress, and to liberal causes, and he will absolutely be missed.

I have also read that due to redistricting Frank's district has become somewhat more conservative as of late, which seems to have contributed to his decision, so I have to imagine that the Republicans are licking their chops in anticipation of picking up this seat.

A close adviser told the Globe today that the new district in which Frank would have had to run next year was a major factor in his decision. While it retained his Newton stronghold, it was revised to encompass more conservative towns while losing New Bedford, a blue-collar city where the Democrat had invested a lot of time and become a leading figure in the region’s fisheries debate.

I certainy hope the Dems have somebody solid to put up for this seat in 2012. I would hate to see another Scott Brown worm his way into yet another important political position in Massachusetts.

Ah Shit! I really like Frank. He's not afraid to say what he thinks. Hopefully his voice won't be silenced.

I saw the same thing happen to Neil Abercrombie in Hawaii. The guy wore cruise-wear, long hair and sandles to congress - but then his district changed and I saw him wearing suits with ties and cut his hair.

    Sad.

Well, if Sarah Palin has proved anything, you don't need a title to stick it to the other side Barney.

Hell, you don't need to research, do homework, vet an issue or back up your criticisms. Just chuck your gutteral spears and run.

    Two things:

    1) Chris Hayes is cute, funny and SMART. I love how he clarifies that he is "smiling" at the commentator when she claims he is "laughing" at her. It's not the same thing. =)

    2) It didn't knock me over the head- I only really realized it at the 7:30 mark - but Chris has THREE women on his panel, with one MALE in addition to himself.

    That. is. AWESOME.

B.c you shouldn't notice that they ARE women; you should notice that you are enjoying the conversation.

He will be missed. Truly honest man, with no apologies, just told it like it is. We need more like him. Sharp wit. When he was told about the Gingrich Group he said "Oh, I thought that was his wives"

We've always admired Barney Frank. This is indeed a blow to the progressive movement.

I hope the Massachusetts Democratic party will take his new district seriously. We need to win control of the House to end this obstructionist situation.

I am hoping Dems in MA can ride the growing coattails of Elizabeth Warren. I hope voters have learned their lesson from the Scott Brown fiasco. No - I should say I hope the Democratic Party in MA has learned its lesson.

Maybe they did because of Warren, but they need to get busy and put forth another candidate of Barney Frank's caliber - and quickly, too.

  17. A real advocate for the people.. I'm heartbroken.... but if there is any light in that darkness...Barney may be better able to help us WITHOUT the restraints of his being a Congressman.!

(and I love what Sarah Vs. Sarah said about the GOP being full of dicks! FECKING BRILLIANT!)

Good news! Barney Frank is a dishonorable man. Don't forget about the sexual escapades in which he engaged. Also, the facts revealed that his boyfriend turned tricks out of Barney's apartment. We need better.

I say "out with the old" and let's find new state legislators and national leaders that are much, much better than what we've had for far too long.

The White House has released this statement on Barney Frank’s retirement from President Obama:

“This country has never had a Congressman like Barney Frank, and the House of Representatives will not be the same without him. For over 30 years, Barney has been a fierce advocate for the people of Massachusetts and Americans everywhere who needed a voice. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of families and businesses and helped make housing more affordable. He has stood up for the rights of LGBT Americans and fought to end discrimination against them. And it is only thanks to his leadership that we were able to pass the most sweeping financial reform in history designed to protect consumers and prevent the kind of excessive risk-taking that led to the financial crisis from ever happening again. Barney’s passion and his quick wit will be missed in the halls of Congress, and Michelle and I join the people of the Bay State in thanking him for his years of service.”

Anon 10:41, I respectfully request that you get your head out of your a$$.

For over 30 years, Congressman Frank has worked tirelessly for the people in his district and in America in general on issues such as fishing in New Bedford, affordable housing, civil rights (LGBT), and financial reform. He speaks his mind no matter the issue, with wit and intelligence. He will be sorely missed.

Barney has sounded tired in a lot of his recent interviews, so I am not surprised.

Hopefully he will remain a voice and a force outside of Congress as he is very much needed by the people of this country.

The honorable Barney Frank will be sorely missed. He not only stood for and fought tirelessly and courageously for the LGBT community, but for ALL people. His wit is what I loved the most. When the Starr report about Clinton/Lewinski came out, he was asked if he read it and said something to the effect "I got half way though, it's the most I've read about heterosexual sex and I found it just boring!

Some people are irrepaceable, but I hope they come close, we need more like him in office!

Sarah vs Sarah @ 7:25 - loved your comment, so true!
