Herman Cain doubles down, saying he does not know Sharon Bialek and that the accusations "Simply did not happen."

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Cain was defiant and completely unapologetic, in his defense.  Claiming that he did not know Bialek and that the accusations are the result of the "Democrat machine."

At one point Cain spoke of himself in the third person and even offered to take a polygraph test, asdding to the circus like atmosphere of the press conference.

Not to give away the ending, but what happens next in the Herman Cain story is that there will now be proof provided that he DOES indeed know Bialek, and more women will come forward publicly to present a united front, and Cain will eventually have to drop out of the race in disgrace. I do not see this playing out any other way.

Essentially Cain could not have dug his political grave any faster if he had a shovel in both hands.

I have a funny feeling there will be pictures released soon to show he does indeed know her. A reporter has already stated he saw them last month. It was reported on my local news that the women are working on a joint press conference. this is going to get very interesting.

She is still not talking, but her family has released some information about her. Seems like a nice lady and VERY credible.

Watch his eye contact with the audience/camera. He can't look us in the eye when his sentences reach key words like 'inapropriate' or 'disrespectful'.

Sure sign of lying. when the sentence is "I'm telling you the truth!" and he looks away just as he says the word 'truth' - that's pretty serious body language...

I've always said that his big, flapping, ignorant mouth would be his undoing. Now, in response to his lies, more women will be coming forward to speak out. I also don't see any end to this except for him to drop out of the campaign in disgrace. He is a black, male version of Sarah Palin, with the same penchant for self-sabotage. The GOP looks extremely foolish trying to defend this buffoon.

Assuming for the sake of the moment that he is not lying.

He has handled this challenge terribly, no leadership quality, no calm in the face of a storm. He is disqualified on that basis alone.

Of course there are now at least two men who said they say him harassing women.

The thing is, the racist GOP had no intention of letting Cain run against Obama...it ruins their fear the blacks message. Just like they would never let Palin or Bachmann run either, because they hate women. So it would not surprise me in the least if this information came from the GOP itself. Once Cain started leading in polls, they finally began to research his shady past, and came up with the settlements. Now, were he already in office, they would sort of defend him, but since he is not, and will never be, they can throw him under the bus and blame the Democrats. Meanwhile, all the independents that the GOP was sure were in lockstep with them, are feeling very kindly toward OWS, looking again at the President, and coming back to the left. Bye Bye GOP...and none too soon.

Grandiose, if proven to be lying obviously he does it without blinking, all the self-victimization, not to mention his audacious attempts to shut down all questions from the press this past week. You can tell he had been told he'd better darn well answer some or they were going to truly go after him.

He should just take his own advice and "blame himself" rather than blaming the victims whilst lying at every turn. The party of self realization and self responsibility is always quick to take no responsibility whatsoever for any of their actions which cause them problems. It is never their fault when things go bad, but when things go well, nobody else gets any credit.

And Mitt Romney is now "one of us" in the middle class, a man of the people, who has "worked" in the private sector his whole life (except when he was Governor), dismantling companies and selling them off for a profit. They are all liars and phokes (phonies and fakes).

    Cain Presser Reactions

    Steven Taylor:

[Denying any memory of Bialek] strikes me as a dangerous way to play this, as if any evidence can be conjured that Cain did know Bialek, then that will undercut his overall denial. And in this era of cameras everywhere, this strikes me as a dangerous bet for Cain to take unless he is 100% certain of the claim.

    Ace of Spades:

I want him to confirm or deny that hotel upgrade.

    Jim Geraghty:

Herman Cain has completed his press conference… which could have used questions like, “Did you rent or upgrade a hotel suite during the time period in question? If you did, why did you rent a luxury suite in a hotel in a city where you lived at the time?”

    Ta-Nehisi Coates:

I think I speak for the "Democrat machine" when I say they'd love nothing better than to run against Herman Cain.

    Michael Crowley:

It’s possible that Cain is being unfairly targeted, but as the volume of the charges mount and the accusers step forward–and Cain flails so unconvincingly–that seems less and less plausible. Virtually every member of the Washington press corps thinks so. And with his talk of journalistic codes of conduct, and now this afternoon’s weak attempt at taking “hard questions,” Cain has only waved a red flag of hostility at the people he needs to help clear his name: journalists.

    Dan Amira:

Cain is being accused of things he says never happened. If he passed a lie detector test — as unreliable as those can be — it would go a long way toward clearing his name in the court of public opinion. If that's not a good enough reason, we don't know what would qualify.

    Allahpundit:

[T]he highlight of ... [the Cain press conference] was probably him saying he’d be willing to take a lie-detector test — but only if someone gives him a good reason to do it. I’m thinking the spectacle of multiple accusers in front of the cameras, using their own names, at a joint press conference would be withering enough to give him that reason.

    Ana Marie Cox:

Cain is not handling this scandal like a typical politician would; he's handling it like a reality television star. But not the kind most people root for.

look no further than the 4 cases that were filed in federal court in 2004. It became a class action lawsuit against Aquila. Cain was on the board.

Cain and other board members were encouraging employees to invest in the company knowing they were losing as much as $200M annually. Employees were offered a 15% discount on company stock and then when they were in trouble, they issued a lockdown on stock sales. Employees were left with nothing while CEO's got $30M in bonuses.

Thanks to Aquila's Enron-esque financial undertakings, thousands of employees saw their retirement funds wiped out while hundreds of millions of dollars went into the pockets of Cain and friends.

I may have been dreaming, but I'm sure I heard a very brief interview with a long-time lobbyist who claimed that "Herbie's" indiscretions were whispered about on the Hill for years, and thems in the know (my words, not his) were completely aware of at least one of the women possibly coming forward back in August. Of course, these statements got absolutely NO play in the MSM. If this is all true, I can't even imagine how the Big Money will attempt to spin this away, thought they'll try like fiery hell to fight it. They need the Godfather's Rodeo Clown to distract from the other GOPers issues, like Romney's past Ponzi scheme.

    http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/05/herman-cain-aquila-lawsuit-2012

Cain served on the board of directors throughout Aquila's ill-fated trading misadventure and the subsequent collapse of the company's retirement fund. In fact, he chaired the board's compensation committee, which, according to the lawsuit, had direct oversight of the push to get employees to invest more and more in Aquila stock. As chair of the compensation committee, Cain also saw fit to dole out $30 million in bonuses, not including stock options, to the top five execs at Aquila in 2002, with the company's stock plummeting. A month after the Kansas City Star reported on the hefty bonuses in July 2002, the company laid off 500 employees, and the losses to employees holding company stock had reached hundreds of millions of dollars.

As a board member, Cain would've had direct knowledge of Aquila's activities, says Fred Taylor Isquith, a New York attorney who litigated the employee class action. Asked if it was fair to place blame on Cain for the debacle at Aquila, Isquith replied, "Yes, I believe it is."

One of the things keeping me from being able to feel any sort of empathy for the believers of the rightwing "faith," is that I have yet to hear one of them come out against ANYONE who has claimed to be a Republican.

By that I mean, that if several women come forward and have proof of actual RAPE by this clown, you will still see nothing more than a sagging of poll numbers--nothing like what SHOULD be said.

The "Family Values" types should be screaming at the top of their lungs about this.

But, NOPE, each and every Fox News-watching "conservative" I know or hear about, just LOVES THEM some Donald Trump (despite it now being obvious he punked them about running, and just took their money and the extra fame it brought him).

They still won't say a bad word about Sarah Palin, no matter how much dirt about what a horrible person she is, comes to light.

Rick Perry could be outed as a closet homosexual, yet even the most homophobic Republican will continue to wave the Texas flag and cry that we "need" his leadership.

Even the ones none of them will tell pollsters they'd vote for, ever get any guff from them...Santorum, Gingrich, etc., may not get their vote, but they also won't get any criticism, no matter HOW batshit crazy any of their ideas are.

So, any rightwingers who may wander in here, wonder why no one takes you seriously, other than those just like you? Its because you obviously are NOT thinking for yourself, in the least, but simply swallowing whole the daily bullshit sprayed on you by the likes of Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, and the others--and coming to a blog like this to do nothing more than repeat such inane malarkey, as if you came up with it on your own.

    Be ashamed of yourself.

In a previous life I was employed in big law firms in HR. Handled this stuff inhouse and in regard to big clients all the time. Yes, sometimes there are false accusations, for various reasons. But I can tell you this, for most innocent and guilty "perps" it takes only ONE accusation (whether followed by settlement or not) to radically change someone's behavior. Both the innocent and the guilty are dis-masted and for ever forward creep about on little cat feet.

It is almost unheard of for "suspecteds" or "actuals" to continue on in their own "misunderstood" or "egregious" ways and garner even more charges of sexual harassment.

For most human beings, it is a humiliating experience, one they will do almost nothing to repeat. One that the firm or business also will go to great lengths to not have them repeat.

Apparently not so for Our Mr. Cain.

I usually try to keep an open mind about these things, having seen it from both sides of the fence.

But in Cain's case, I find no margin for doubt.

Bialek today released pictures that were taken with Cain about a year ago of her and her boyfriend with Cain.

The woman who's identify was revealed by a publication (I think NYT, but not positive), she spoke to media about an hour before Cain's presser. She has also spoken to Gloria Borger of CNN and advised her that she has copies of all her documents she filed at NRA. As the NRA has released her from the conditions of the settlement, anticipate those documents being released. There is not the need to wait for the NRA to drag their feet 'digging' them up!!

I must ask- has anyone gotten a post card from Germany? How's that visit going? Who's paying for it? Must cost a lot to take the wife and kids. I don't remember any fundraising to pay for this vacation (but I remember something about collecting money so that Joe and his wife could go on the wingnut cruise).

Has he figured out a way to get someone else to pay for this trip? Paid for by his PAC as a video shoot "Joe Miller Explores the Great Wall of Berlin, Explains How We Need It Here"?

Maybe he's writing a book; "Our Leader: Great Moments in Totalitarian Governments. The Borders Are Secured and All The Reporters Have Been Arrested".

Maybe it's a meetup with Captain Zero to market seafood and wingnut ideas overseas? Are the party planner or the singer also along?

  56. Thisby9:48 PM

You know what, I like most people, am indifferent to many, and dislike a few. It is not in my nature to hate. But as time goes by, I am finding that I really do hate this arrogant son of a bitch, this sexist pig, who thinks he is above all law and common decency. Who the fuck does he think he is? I am an old lady now, in my early 60s, but as I was coming up in the workforce starting in about 1970, I had to deal with this sort of crap over and over. And I KNOW, like most working women know, that speaking out or making a fuss was never going to end in your favor. And now, to have to be dragged through the mud once again because you finally came forward is just one more instance of the inherent sexism of the Republican party and the good ol' boys for which it stands. They all make me sick.

I find that I get a little bit rabid about what's going on now, but I won't apologize for that. I was working in television during the Clarence Thomas hearings, and as we in engineering watched the "lynching" of Anita Hill, I had a lot of arguments with the men, who didn't have a clue how it really was for women. High-tech lynching indeed. It was Anita and women in general who were being lynched, and it is going on right this very minute with "Herb" Cain's offensive blathering. I hope he rots in hell, along with the rest of his ilk who are attacking his victims and setting equal rights back about... oh, maybe 800 years?

Cain is the Republican foil who's only function is to stereotype the negro race. The overspill will taint any candidate of color in future elections. Smart play toward unseating Obama.

She may have done all this, including attending the TeaParty convention, in order to counteract the denials she knew would come. She has visual and witness proof that he did in fact lay eyes on her before AND knew who she was.
