Despite attacks coming from all sides, President Obama's approval numbers are on the rise.

Courtesy of ABC News:

Aided by comparison to the vastly unpopular Congress, Barack Obama has advanced to a 49 percent job approval rating in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll – his best showing since spring, and one, if it holds, that may put his re-election prospects back within reach.

The result continues an improving trend for the president amid some signs of economic gains. And it contrasts with both parties in Congress, embroiled in their latest game of political chicken. A mere 27 percent of Americans now approve of the Democrats in Congress, and just 20 percent approve of the Republicans – both new lows in ABC/Post polling back to 1994.

Obama’s rating, while still (barely) under 50 percent, is up from his career-low 42 percent in October, and back at the level at which he could run competitively for a second term.

We are still many months away from the election.  If things keep trending in this direction the President will be in a MUCH better position than pundits have predicted by the time the 2012 election comes around.

Somehow I think that might have been the plan all along.

"I told you not to worry. Everything is under control."

  1. Troops coming home is probably a nice boost to that rating, perhaps.

He'll be re elected and I can hardly wait to vote for him AGAIN. The Republicans in the House of Congress need to be voted OUT this next go around along w/their leader Boehner. What horrid folks!!! Listening to the "American people", my ass.

Don't ya' just love that Librul media?

Looking at the Republican field, I'd say as long as his approval rating stays above the twenties, "he could run competitively for a second term."

But the President must be kept awake at night for fear that 'folks' may still jump in the race for the GOP Primary.

I mean, how serious a threat is that? More than Al Qaeda? More than Iraq?

More than a peaceful transition and improving relations with Canada and our allies in North Korea?

Sarah Palin and bassackwards Americans that still think that woman is fit to lead anything out of more than a paper bag are idiots. And assholes.

    Happy Holidays President Obama!

I really can't believe how irresponsible the GOP are acting, especially in the house. I really hope a lot of these morons so not get elected again. They live in an alternate universe.
The Democrats in congress need ri be tougher and to stand up for what our values are ( if you are a Democrat).
There are very simple easy fixes to Medicare and social security without destroying the only safety net millions of Americans have.
G, do you ever read Robert Reichs articles on HP.
He makes so much sense and he never gets a lot of nasty comments because he is a very smart economist. I wish more on the right would read what he writes with an open mind because he is absolutely right about many things.
Of course many of them are simpletons who prefer sound bites over real economics. It's sad how uninformed and rigid most of them are.
I really hope you are right about President Obama.
The thought of any of these GOP candidates is frightening.
They are a cold hearted, backwards group whose philosophies would hurt our economy even more

I can't wait to vote for Bristol Palin as President.

As a knocked up skank, she alone has the gravitas required for the job.

I read the following article and thought of you, and sure enough, you had this Obama up in the polls article up on your site, so I'm writing again against my own feelings it's a waste of time. I do respect you and hope you will see the light eventually. I do appreciate all you've done to tear down Palin, and I hope it's for good this time.

But let's be real. The stoning of an obnoxious demigogue is a fun sport closely related to the old time stoning or torch carrying villagers against monsters of old. It was fun all the investigative work, but it all boiled down to a disturbed mid-forties woman trying to desperately appear still young by faking a pregnancy for the same baby prop she's used in past elections.

I wrote you a comment only once before when you posted about a disillusioned democrat who thought Obama was a do-nothing suit but then wrote an appology when she was able to get health insurance.

Several of your anonymous "followers" wrote back about how I was this evil troll and wacky "conspiracy nut," the same thing others would call you for your pregnancy and ear research. Maybe if your anonymous posters had used their real names and not succumbed to the fear tactics of the Palins she would never have become your governor in the first place.

Maybe because you're up there in Alaska, the home of HAARP (why don't you write about THAT!) you can't readily see that Obama's ascent was just as meteoric as Sarah's, and pal, THEY don't let anyone rise unless they know what they're getting and that they'll be controllable.

I heard you're into photo analysis when it comes to baby ears and belly bumps. Why don't you check out all the long scars on Obama's scull visible through his closely cropped hair that are not accountable in his medical records?

It's sad that when someone brings up the obvious, that Obama has not been an effective leader or pushed for the things WE elected him to, your faithful are horrified and think those comments have got to be a dirty trick sent to demoralize them. I am writing this to you, not your peanut gallery, as an admirer of your work on Palin, in the hopes you live up to a higher standard in holding all national office holders responsible and not giving them a pass just because the other guys are worse. Some might say they are just being more honest about their true nature to be on the winningside at all costs. If I get a chance, I'll vote for Ron Paul over Obama in a heartbeat.

If you really want to be about raising political consciousness in a post-Palin era, I suggest you start by looking at other sites like Whale.to, educateyourself.org, or read "the nation" or other posts besides the Huffigton one which just reported, "Matt Damon, one of Barack Obama's earliest supporters and once one of his most staunch advocates, slammed the President in the new issue of Elle Magazine.

"I've talked to a lot of people who worked for Obama at the grassroots level. One of them said to me, 'Never again. I will never be fooled again by a politician,'" Damon tells the magazine. "You know, a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of the country, much better."

The GOP has no one. NO ONE. This includes "the skank that shall not be named" that WILL be bitch slapped down if she dares even try to enter. There's only one "enter" she's familiar with, and it sure as hell isn't politics.

  12. Robert Schoen@6.39a - you were sort of rational sounding in your piece - sort of - until you reached the point of talking about "long scars on Obama's 'scull'" not accountable in his medical records? How's that Todd Palin reality show doing you like so much?

Just in case you're not aware how Government works, perhaps you should take a civics class. The President can't pass legislations without Congress. However, in the midst of all the obstructions by the GOP, the President has gotten more done than any other President since Lyndon Johnson. That's leadership I believe in!! http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/what-has-obama-done-since-january-20-2009.html

Besides Ron Paul being a racist pig, the man is a certified nut. He wants to eliminate basically all departments in Government including the Dept of Education. Which by the way, is not what progressives stand for. Also, Ron Paul is a states rights advocate. Giving states the right to do whatever the hell they want to. So, give me a fucking break with the Ron Paul BS. He's not even close to being a progessive.

I will gladly vote for President Obama again. He's the best we have right now considering the wack jobs out there. President is not perfect & there are some things I wished he had gotten done, but I am smart enough to know he can't do it all alone and he's need more time.

I don't care if he hits the low 40's again. When the best the GOP can serve up is Gingrich and Palin, re-election is secure. Eben if Jeb or someone else jumps in, the President now has that executive experience so crqaved by the GOP, and an impressive list of accomplishments. And with unemployment numbers getting better every day, and the GOP Congress on the ropes trying to defend their love of the top 1%...no brainer. Obama all the way.

I don't understand why the left is always bashing him, do they think McCain/Palin would have been more liberal? No president is an island, they can't do everything they promise, and they can't do everything people write to tell them they should do. They do what they can--what the other elected officials allow.

Look what the right did as soon as they took over in 2010--attack unions, teachers, unemployment benefits, social security, health care reform, reproductive rights--throwing taxpayers money at the rich, taxing the lower incomes to pay for the rich. Is that better and more liberal than the President? I think the left got so used to hating Bush they can't turn it off, and just direct the hate at the office, regardless of the office holder.

In response to some of the comments on my post, I admit some points in my writing is deliberately provocative, like the head scars and especially the Ron Paul comment, but that is my point, to make others THINK instead of following blindly. Maybe my point was that we should distrust all politicians until they prove otherwise. I saw Paul being interviewed by John King yesterday and he said the 20 year old comments in his newsletter about the LA rioters stopping for their welfare checks were penned by someone else and he had long disavowed them. I will have to study his entire policy package and think long and hard about Paul to be as informed as I can on all his policies before considering a vote, my point being he had been consistent and forthright for a long time. I think his son Rand gives me the creeps and that is certainly a negative.

Another reason I decided to post again was that Gryphen has been lately singing the praises of Chris Hitchens, the British attack dog who lead the campaign against Clinton (a great president by the way) on Monica Lewinsky and fiercely promoted the second US war with Iraq. Gryphen wrote that he shares Hitchens views on religion and God.

I was at a party just last week and a friend brought up Hitchen's view that Mother Theresa was some tool being used to keep women suppressed by the church. I replied that it was obvious to me who the real "tool" was, and that it was almost comical beyond belief that Hitchens' would have the audacity to question the motives of Mother Theresa, almost as if it were a perverse exercise of his part to see how much he could get away with while keeping a straight face. My young friend was unaware of Hitchen's role in the Lewinsky affair, but my point to him was that Hitchens had long been a destructive force in leading people in the wrong direction on issues because there is not one iota of spirtuality in his core. That proved to be a real cancer. There's a great difference between blind religious dogma and spirituality and while I have been a strong critic of the Catholic church's political stances and abuses, I know there are truly spiritual people who work within it and I would never consider them "suckers." Mother Theresa IS a saint and a model for us all in that our personal actions can make a difference. That is the ultimate empowerment

My point of this followup is that for me, I'm not here to dog Obama but to say the political paradigm will never solve or give us the answers alone, and that it has been used for forever for manipulating us. Being in Louisiana, I know my eventual vote for Obama (I will reluctantly vote for him as I did for Kerry) will not count electorially because of all the other yahoos in my state. They assiduosly cultivate that feeling of hopelessness.

We are coming into some great times, and a larger curiousity and a spiritual approach to life is the only thing that can truly give us a personal sense of empowerment to change things.

Learn about Orgone and the power of good intentions, get involved in the occupy movement or choose to live green, bike. Write in when you feel there's an article or comment leading people the wrong way. That's what I'm doing.

When I review all the amazing things that our president has accomplished in his first term I just burst with pride that I had a vote in putting him in office.

He is a dignified, honorable, reasonable, fair, judicious leader who stands head and shoulders above any president in my lifetime and I'm nearly 60 years old.

I am so grateful that he won the votes of the American people and will do so again, no matter how the negative media spin ramps up to try and discredit his spectacular successes as our president.

He and his family have represented our country with such grace and humility, I couldn't ask for a more satisfying beacon of hope and commitment in the face of such an onslaught of attacks.

I would vote for him 1000 times if I could. And as far as demographics, I am caucasian, female, well educated, well read, deeply involved in political knowledge and history.

President Barack Obama is a profound blessing on this country. Period.
