Let's take a little peek inside the GOP clown car shall we?

So currently the media are only considering three individuals as REAL contenders for the GOP nomination, and they are Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich. (Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum could not get media attention right now if they immolated themselves on the steps of Capitol Hill.)

Personally I think that Mitt will end up with the nomination, and that this it is all smoke and mirrors from the other potential candidates, but let's go ahead and pretend this is an actual contest.

First up we have Newt Gingrich.
"Look I stand on my record. Unless you bring up embarrassing things in my record, in which case I deny it is my record."

The breaking story about him today is that the divorce papers from the end of his first marriage have now been made public.  And guess what? Newt may have lied about exactly WHO filed for that divorce. (I know, shocking isn't it?)

The documents, and interviews with people close to the couple at the time, contradict the Gingrich claim about who wanted the divorce.

Newt Gingrich filed a divorce complaint on July 14, 1980, in Carroll County, saying that "the marriage of the parties is irretriebably (sic) broken."

Jackie Battley Gingrich, the congressman's wife and the mother of Jackie Gingrich Cushman, responded by asking the judge to reject her husband's filing.

"Defendant shows that she has adequate and ample grounds for divorce, but that she does not desire one at this time," her petition said.

"Although defendant does not admit that this marriage is irretrievably broken, defendant has been hopeful that an arrangement for temporary support of defendant and the two minor daughters of the parties could be mutually agreed upon without the intervention of this court," her petition said. "All efforts to date have been unsuccessful."

So essentially Newt's attempts to suggest that his first wife wanted out of the marriage, and filed for divorce, is NOT back up by the actual evidence. But what might prove just as damaging is a former friend's suggestion for why Newt REALLY wanted out of the marriage in the first place.

Leonard H. "Kip" Carter, a former close Gingrich friend, backed the contention that it was Newt Gingrich who wanted the divorce.

"He (Gingrich) said, 'You know and I know that she's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of a president,' " Carter, who now lives in South Carolina, told CNN recently, relating the conversation he had with Gingrich the day Gingrich revealed he was filing for divorce. Carter served as treasurer of Gingrich's first congressional campaigns.

Newt has been given a pass by the Evangelicals despite his numerous marriages. and numerous episodes of marital infidelity. But really HOW MUCH can these people forgive before the lies and cheating become too much for even their built in hypocrisy to handle?

The guy is beyond scummy and there is NO way he can stand next to the President without looking like a trenchcoated pervert bussed in from a local playground.

He has no real chance.

So that brings us to Ron Paul.

For awhile Paul was the darling of the media who had decided that he may be the one candidate who could not be labeled with the dreaded "flip-flopper" designation.

However though he did not change his position on things, exactly what kind of positions did he take?

Currently the internet is all abuzz about racist remarks that appeared on the Ron Paul newsletters from the 1990's. Newsletters that he now says he did not have much to do with, and claims that the racist remarks found on them are not from his hand. (Though in 1995 he expressed great pride in his newsletters.)

However the Washington Post Fact Checker does not buy it:

Paul offers implausible explanations for why so many derogatory statements made it into his publications, insisting he knew nothing about them. It’s hard to believe that a man who wants to oversee the entire U.S. government — albeit a smaller version — would provide zero oversight of his publications, or even bother to read them from time to time.

And just in case you did not think these remarks were inflammatory enough to derail his campaign, Business Insider has some tweets, that contain actual excerpts from these newsletters, that you need to see.

So much for Ron Paul.

Which brings us at last to Mitt Romney.

"Look I realize I'm not the man of your dreams. But we both know your going home with me eventually."
The current news making the rounds about Mittens that is giving the American people pause, is that he has refused to provide his tax records. Here is his excuse:

“We don’t have any current plans to release tax returns, but never say never,” he said today after greeting voters at an Agway farm and hardware store here.

“We’ll see what the future holds. We’ve released of course all of the information required by law, which is a pretty extensive release. But down the road we’ll see what happens if I’m the nominee.”

Romney also suggested that he could be utilizing a “carried interest” provision in the tax code that allows investors to qualify for a 15 percent tax rate on capital gains earnings, rather than pay the 35 percent income tax rate for the wealthiest taxpayers. “I can tell you we follow the tax laws, and if there’s an opportunity to save taxes, we like anybody else in this country will follow that opportunity,” he said.

Comparatively speaking this might seem a rather insignificant concern, however in today's political climate, with the Occupy protesters constantly in the news and voters expressing outrage at how the top 1% keep refusing to pay their fair share, it might prove to have serious consequences once Mitt is the nominee. Especially since I am pretty confident that the records will indicate that Mitt has probably NOT paid his fair share of taxes in quite some time.

We don't really think this picture was a fluke do we?

Besides, Romney's a Mormon. I know it should not matter, but I also know that it really, really, really does matter to a large number of religious folks in this country.

Which, by the way, is the REAL reason he has not been able to get more than 25% in the national polls.

Let's face it, considering the amount of baggage these clowns are carrying on the GOP side, when all is said and done we already know who will emerge victorious after the polls close in November.

I knew you'd come around.

Gryph, do not underestimate the "anyone but Mitt", crowd, and the underhanded stealth and capabilities of Newton.. I think at this point, Newton has at least a 50/50 chance.

Personal lives shouldn't factor into the equation. It doesn't for democrats. Why does it for GOP? There are plenty of cons to make people not vote for any of the dems and reps. It's all about who's going to compliment private enterprise the best.

It will be Mitt. It has always been Mitt. He was chosen in Nov 2008 just like Obama was chosen in 2004.

Ever since the "stolen" eight years that was Dubya, and Diebold machines, any ONE of these clowns can get in no matter how the voting public casts our ballot. Queen Esther Of THE Lowest IQ got the nod for VP because she was "hot."

Sorry to disappoint you, johnie2xs, but Gryph is absolutely correct in his assessment of Mr. Gingrich's chances: he has no possibility whatsoever of receiving the Republican nomination. He was ousted from his House leadership role by his own party members, forced to pay a $300k fine in the process, has lied and continues to lie about anything and everything, and is not one that the party movers and shakers respect at all, to the point of actually despising him. He will not get close.

His campaign is another of the several money making book tours disguised as political campaigns, such as those of Herman Cain and Sarah Palin, which are not meant to actually win the nomination, but rather to provide income and benefits to the principal and his or her minions.

I agree with you that Mittens will get the nomination. And if those false Christians don't like it, they don't have to show up to vote in November. And if they don't show up to vote in November, the Democrats stand a good chance of keeping the Senate and taking back the House. And of course, a second term would be in the cards for President Obama.

I am 56 years old and I think President Obama is the best President of my lifetime. And all the babies seem to agree.

Haha Newt. What a piece of work. I thought Jackie just had cancer, I didn't know she wasn't PRETTY enough. And way to use your daughter to write an oped full of lies. Eww.
Poor Mitt, he keeps losing to losers - wouldn't it be great if Sarah popped into the race as the latest not Mitt? Haha losing to her, even briefly, would really suck.

What planet are you living on? The reason why it factors into the equation for the GOP is because THEY make it factor into everyone else. I guess you've never seen a Republican negative campaign before? Where were you in 2008?

THEY'RE the ones with the holier than thou, judge all who are different than us "family values" platform, so it's reasonable to hold them to their own standards and verify whether they're hypocrites.

Even The Palin said "character counts". Probably the only intelligent thing she's ever said.

Gingrich is a self inflating, wife hopping, grifting, lying sack of shit. He was never a serious candidate, he's been simply trying to raise his speaking fees, sell books and movies, and pump his brand. He was surprised as anybody when his poll numbers rose. So, he went along for the ride. His "campaign" is so feckless that he can't even qualify to get on the ballot in the state where he lives? THAT should explain how seriously he takes his campaign.

He's just another in a long, LONG list of GOP cons who are simply out to fleece the flock. However, he might just help kill off the GOP, for which I would thank him.

Newt could eat shit and die and it would but make me smile.

Go tell Gary Hart and Bill Clinton and John Edwards that personal lives don't matter for Democrats. WTF are you talking about? "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" seems to be a safe pastime for Republicans, even those who hiked it with their wife's mother.
    ---------------
I agree, Gryph, Romney is their guy, whether they like it or not (and a lot of them would answer Not). I really like that scenario, because it will make it hard for them to get the self-proclaimed Values Voters to the polls, and make it harder for them to pass all manner of stupid measures the T-Baggers will have on the State ballots. I also look for a backlash by moderates against the radical views of the T'ers, and for Dems to step it up having seen what happened in 2010 when they didn't, and we'll see a lot of the T'ers at both the State and national levels quickly reduced to footnotes - which is probably more commemoration than they deserve.

  26. Didn't Rachel Maddow do a great piece on each GOP klown kar kandidate having a thrilling 8 weeks ranking high in the polls? And then a sudden drop. So to me that suggest a new dark-horse kandidate ready to spring upon us about 7 weeks before the election, someone who has digested all the mistakes the previous kkkandidates made, accompanied by a gazillion dollar all-media blitz (incl some outrageous negative blitz on the President), not enough time for the skeletons or disenchantment to appear, a little help from crooked Diebold machines where needed, and presto change-o -- Obama loses. We must not be complacent. Just in case there are some brains strategizing the GOP approach to our sheep-like electorate.

Newt should ban the use of photos like that: they make him look meaner and more grotesque than he is. P.Rick, also too, is getting uglier by the day. Mitt/Willard looks like he's sleep-deprived, not at peace and desperate. Michelle looks like she's on a starvation diet. Ron Paul looks like what he is: a wizened (but not wise)cranky old dude who could do without (dangerous) blacks, (manipulative) Jews and (disease-spreading) gays. As for Rick Santorum, he just looks nutty and kind of sweet (until he opens his yap.) As for Jon Huntsman: NORMAL ergo unacceptable to the GOP!
