In the unheralded accomplishments department, President Obama saved the internet. You're welcome.

"Nah you don't have to thank me. You know I've got your back."
Courtesy of the Washington Monthly:

At issue are two related bills: the Senate’s Protect IP Act and the even more offensive Stop Online Piracy Act in the House, both of which are generated intense opposition from tech giants and First Amendment advocates. The first sign that the bills’ prospects were dwindling came Friday, when SOPA sponsors agreed to drop a key provision that would have required service providers to block access to international sites accused of piracy.

The legislation ran into an even more significant problem yesterday when the White House announced its opposition to the bills. Though the administration’s chief technology officials officials acknowledged the problem of online privacy, the White House statement presented a fairly detailed critique of the measures and concluded, “We will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.” It added that any proposed legislation “must not tamper with the technical architecture of the Internet.”

Until now, the Obama administration had not taken a position on the issue. The response was published yesterday as part of the online “We The People” petition initiative launched by the White House last year.

Though the administration did not issue a formal veto threat, the White House’s opposition signaled the end of these bills, at least in their current form.

A few hours later, Congress shelved SOPA, putting off action on the bill indefinitely.

So there you go.

For those of us who use the internet quite frequently, or have an opinion blog that borrows from the writings of journalists to make a point, this has been a rather frightening time.

Not me of course, I had total trust in the President to stop this thing before it got out of hand.

I mean it's not like I was lying awake at night rocking to and fro in my bed weeping or anything. Because that would be, you know, unmanly.

Anyhow now SOPA is dead in the water. And PIPA (The Senate version) actually died a little earlier after six of the GOP co-sponsors begged Harry Reid NOT to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.

So what that means for us is that we still get to talk about politics, religion, and Sarah Palin to our heart's content, without fear of being sued or shut down.

And as Martha Stewart would say, "That's a good thing."

  2. The man's smart. He knows his voters are connected and organized via the Internet. I knew he was going to win during the 08 campaign when a new videogame came out- and sorry, I don't remember which one, because I don't game- and they'd paid to have Obama advertised around the virtual arena. Smart guy, smart employees. Okay, I'm off to email my thanks to the White House.

  4. Yaaayy! I'm glad the Obama administration will not sign nor have anything to do with this.

My only concern will be for the next President after Obama (in 2016, of course!) and the next Congress. Will they try to bring these bills back up? And will they be successful then?

Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) which is a House Bill has gotten the attention.

What has not is that there is also a Bill in the Senate: S.968 Protest IP Act of 2011. A bill to prevent online threats to economic creativity and theft of intellectual property, and for other purposes. Other purposes????

This is not getting attention. And 1 of the 40 who is co-sponsoring this bill -- Al Franken. It worries me too when I see Rethugs Orrin Hatch, Lamar Alexander, Kelly Ayotte, Grassley, Rubio, McCain & his Bitch Lindsey (Graham!!) among many Dems.

What the hell is up with this. Don't take your eyes off the Senate bill as the MSM has.

Wait until AFTER the election. THEN this bill will be resurrected and President Obama WILL sign it (after making a few scolding comments to Congress about it).

I will make this fearless prediction and feel that anyone who disagrees with it is painfully naive when it comes to President Obama.

Protecting the internet - yes. Protecting internet users - not so much.

“Under the National Operations Center (NOC)’s Media Monitoring Initiative that came out of DHS headquarters in November, Washington has the written permission to retain data on users of social media and online networking platforms.

Specifically, the DHS announced the NCO and its Office of Operations Coordination and Planning (OPS) can collect personal information from news anchors, journalists, reporters or anyone who may use “traditional and/or social media in real time to keep their audience situationally aware and informed.”

He has our back when he wanted to give illegals MORE freedom than us? When he has continued the practices of killing business ownership?

    Obama=more of the same.

Anon 7:31 AM Al Franken did NOT sign on to that mess. Leave him out of it.

    -----------

I posted the link to Open Congress.
Franken was one of 40 co-sponsors, so there is no leaving him out of it. Under Sponsor: Leahy is a link to the list of 40 co-sponsors. Check it out. Franken was added May 12, 2011.

The bill may be shelved for now, but it's lurking on the shelf in that there is almost half of the senate & bipartisan support. Don't turn your eyes away from it even with what Obama is stating in his position. There was no outright comment he would veto it.

Yet another reason to be grateful McGrumpy and Madame Wigwam are not in the White House.

I have to admit I was extremely disappointed that Wasserman-Shultz and Al Franken (whom I both respect)supported SOPA and PIPA.

I think President Obama's biggest accomplishment to society is stopping the breeding habits of the Palindumbusretardes species.

They haven't reproduced since Track impregnated the pastor's unmarried daughter.

Keep our fingers crossed on Willow and Piper.

Hope they don't develop the baby bump symptoms that run rampant in the Heath and Palin households.

By the way, how is Bristol's god child and Little Baby DWTS doing?

    Friends,

I'm in computer networking, have worked for internet service providers, and in tech for 22 years.

What the old men in Congress were trying to do was going to ban entire domains from being accessed based on allegations from RIAA and MPAA. What none of them understood was how the technical side of the internet works in ANY way at all.
They wanted to give a small agency in the DHS permission to arbitrarily ban entire websites, DNS names, or even IP Blocks based on unproven allegations.
There are numerous other technical things they could have done which would amount to limiting US citizens free access to legitimate resources by literally breaking the internet online protocols with utter impunity.

If these laws were passed, we'd be just like China, with a bunch of sour faced fat beauracrats deciding where we are allowed to go on the 'net.

It took the combined might of the big players like Google and Microsoft, and many others to finally convince these know-nothings that there were ACTUALLY THINGS ABOUT THE INTERNET THEY DIDN"T KNOW.!!!

Kind of reminds me of the Chief Idiot of Wasilla, who is delusional about nearly everything, whil believing only she is the true savior of the far right.

And just FYI, when the Game Change movie is released on HBO, that will be available freely on the web, to those who know how to get it.
Usually, video, music, applications, etc are available using a Bittorrent client.

It might be that I could tell someone of how to get it free, but of course that's only theoretical, and I don't advocate doing that, do I ?

    :)

Kudos Mr Obama. Now, we need you to tell the thugs in the Justice dept to back off the legal marijuana clinics in the USA.
    Please?

There's still going to be some websites protesting, Wikileaks being the biggie.
President Obama's got his eye on the big picture.

AJ Billings, thanks for the bittorrent comment (cough cough) I hear (nervous twitch) some folks actually have instructions on this top secret internet site called "Google", with links to sites with discussion threads, soley for (wink) "educational purposes". ;o)

Can you imagine Twitter and Facebook banning posts from states that start and end with the letter "A"? A certain abreeva coated lipped, blackberry carpul tunnel suffering, bewigged and xanaxed ex politician would be hitting the fridge with canned goods while knocking her head on the wall while rocking back and forth!
