Is this an indication of just how ugly politics will be this election year?

Ken Aden Arkansas democrat running for Congress
Courtesy of the Ken Aden for Congress website:

On the heels of a weekend of positive news coverage for the campaign of Democratic Congressional candidate Ken Aden, Aden’s campaign manager returned home to find his family pet slaughtered, with the word “liberal” painted on the animal’s corpse.

The Russellville Police Department is investigating, and a report will be made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation Monday morning.

Jacob Burris, who has served as Aden’s campaign manager since late October, arrived home with his family Sunday evening, and his four children discovered the gruesome scene as they exited the family vehicle to enter their home.

The family pet, an adult, mixed-breed Siamese cat, had one side of its head bashed in to the point the cat’s eyeball was barely hanging from its socket. The perpetrators scrawled “liberal” across the cat’s body and left it on the doorstep of Burris’ house.

“To kill a child’s pet is just unconscionable,” Aden said Monday morning. “As a former combat soldier, I’ve seen the best of humanity and the worst of humanity. Whoever did this is definitely part of the worst of humanity,” he said.

“It is one thing to engage in civil political discourse, and for Republicans and Democrats to disagree with each other, which is an expected part of the political process. Taking it to this level is beyond unacceptable,” Aden said.

This is the outcome when certain cable news stations, and right wing radio shock jocks, vilify those on the other side the of the political aisle to such a degree that they no longer seem human. To these people "liberals" are in the same category as "commies," or "terrorists," or any other epithet you an imagine which conjures up visions of anti-Americanism.

I guess it could be worse, at least nobody was shot.

Oh wait....

(If you would like to send a message to the assholes who thought that murder of a family pet would stop this brave veteran's campaign, you can do so by contributing here.)

Cowardly assholes, but it's Arkansas, perhaps they were jealous the cat was smarter and more humane. I really hope they find this/these clowns and string them up with piano wire around their balls.

I am sick to my stomach at the level of hate that is happening in this country. But to take it out on a poor, defenseless, beautiful creature? Just as vile as it gets.

I hope with all my heart that they find who did this and they are made to answer to this abominable action.

Ken Aden and his family should be guests of honor at the State of the Union address.

  4. I am sure that some conservative will insist on some sort of "balance" and try to tell us that "there are some liberals who are just as bad."

Which I think is bull. Who is the liberal Joe Miller? Who is the liberal Schaeffer Cox? Who denies reality as well as the Bachmanns?

It seemed like the economy was going to be okay until the debt ceiling debate in Congress. Who almost brought everything to a screeching halt? The conservatives.

I am sick and tired of people saying that both parties/sides are the problem. It looks to me like the conservative/Republican side is a lot more irrational and much much more of a problem. Huckabee is still saying that Obama is a foreigner even though Obama has released not just one but two valid forms of his birth certificate.

Let's stop saying that both sides are the problem. Let's start pointing out that one side actively denies reality and refuses to try to understand reality. Let's point out that one side offers no solutions.

Sarah is the leader of the hate that has been foisted on this country. She thrives on it and wallows in it and encourages it on a regular basis. She is evil to the core and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that she applauds this kind of activity. After all, she IS the one who would cut legs off of baby wolves for bounty.

When I suggested Aden and his family be guest of the SOTU, I actually meant Buriss and his. Both families would be even better. Let America see the faces of the children whose cat was killed by the Crosshairs Sarah wing of the Republican party.

  12. I truly believe that our country took a severe downward turn in political discourse in one single moment. That was during the delivery of Sarah Palin's sneering, disrespectful, dog whistle speech at the RNC. The moment is crystallized in my mind as the turning point. Politics were always dirty, but that was when it got hateful. She is truly a sick individual, and if she didn't have her looks, she never would have even been elected town counselor. Please Alaska...someone up there deliver the goods to take this cancer out!

but again i tell you that this is exactly the type of stuff that palin and her ilk love to hear about.
why? because just like theshooting of the congresswoman it shows that the people they are preaching to get their message at a very deep level.
and while palin and her ilk can deny forever that they wanted such an outcome they nevertheless are deeply satisfied that they can influence their supporters behavior at such a deep level.

and isnt that the ideal result for anyone who wishes power?

I just saw this on another website. Disgusting.

Speaking of cowardly assholes, another coward is Rick Santorum. On Hardball there was a segment about a woman in the audience at a Santorum rally saying President Obama is a Muslim and shouldn't be President etc. Santorum did not correct her, leaving the low-information voter crowd to believe these falsehoods.

There are not many nice things I can say about John McCain but he did set the crazy lady at one of his rallies straight on then Senator Obama.

I sent an email to Santorum letting him know how morally bankrupt he truly is.

These Republicans are making me sick, literally and figuratively.

Rand Paul Is So Full of Shit About Being ‘Detained’ by the TSA

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (of the Paul Libertarian Blimp Empire) hates the TSA. It's his "signature issue" — his contentious questioning about the agency's aggressive security policies got him a lot of positive press among internet conservatives and libertarians last year. So must have been really excited, just, positively tumescent when TSA agents asked to pat him down this morning, and he refused. "Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He's currently being detained by TSA in Nashville," his communications director Moira Bagley Tweeted shortly after. The only thing is, though, Rand Paul was never actually "detained" by the TSA.

Despite the most fervent wishes of the libertarian conservative corner of the internet, Paul was not seized by Barack Obama's Black Panther stormtroopers and tortured for information about the supposed "gold standard": he set off the body scanner (something in his knee, apparently), which requires a pat down; he refused the pat down, and was escorted out of the security area. He took another flight later. Inconvenient? Sure. Silly? Absolutely? But Rand Paul was not detained.

The Secrets of the Republican Hair Helmet

With this haircut, Callista just seems so old fashioned, like her hair would be more suited to Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, or even Jackie Kennedy. Or maybe that's the thing? Maybe she's trying to weasel her way into our little minds by forcing us to associate her with a first lady just on her nostalgic noggin alone. She's winning votes one stealthy suggestion at a time.

Even Michael Angelo wonders what hair stylist would give her such an old-fashioned cut, unless she goes to the same D.C. salon as all the other out of touch GOP grande dames. (According to The New Yorker she gets it done at Sugar House in Old Town in Alexandria, Va., outside of D.C.). Or maybe it's something more sinister. Michael says, "I'm just wondering if there is some queen behind the chair laughing his ass off. 'Take this, you Republican bitch.'"

Gallup: Romney Support Continues To Crater

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney continues to lose support nationally, according to the new Gallup tracking poll of the Republican race out Monday. Romney clings to just a one point lead on former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 29 – 28.

To put it in perspective, Romney was up on Gingrich by ten on Friday. Less than a week before that, he was up 23 points after he had won the Iowa caucuses (which was later confirmed to be won by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum) and the New Hampshire primary, which Romney dominated. But his loss in the South Carolina primary has clearly caused many Republicans nationally to reconsider Gingrich.

If you are going to own a cat, then fucking take care of it. Do NOT let it run loose outside when it can come to great harm from any number of sources.

If it comes to harm, as this poor cat did, then it is YOUR FAULT. And it is THAT SIMPLE.

Does that excuse a sick fuck who harms your cat? Of course not. But the fact is, a suck fuck couldn't have harmed your cat if you acted like a responsible owner and kept it inside away from harm.

And anyone who thinks it's impossible that the killing of this cat could have been an inside job, obviously doesn't get out much.

I hope it wasn't. But I would like to know how a supporter of the opposition would even have the slightest clue that the campaign manager even had a cat, much less what it looked like, muck less was able to capture and kill it in such a finger-pointing way.

  63. Anonymous5:17 PM

Anonymous @3:48 may or may not be a troll, but s/he makes a valid point. My first thought, after dealing with my horror, was how did these killers get access to the cat? Now I had a farm, and I had barn cats and they lived to ripe old ages; but a Siamese is a pet animal, imho, and ought not to have been left outside. Was there a pet sitter for the cat? Again, I know cats can be left alone for several days, but still ... if the cat was indoors, how did anyone get their rotten nasty hands on it to kill it? It's not an irrelevant question. You don't put a dog on top of your car; you don't leave your cat alone, outside, when you're away, most especially when it's your kids pet. There are two issues here. One is the sick twisted sob who killed an innocent animal and how that reflects on our country. The other is giving proper care to an ostensibly loved pet and how that reflects on the owner.

To the idiots who are blaming the owners for allowing their cat to be outside, that is still not an excuse to KILL the animal and put the word LIBERAL on the dead cat. The subject is about a poor cat getting KILLED over POLITICS. Get it now.

"I hope it wasn't. But I would like to know how a supporter of the opposition would even have the slightest clue that the campaign manager even had a cat, much less what it looked like, muck less was able to capture and kill it in such a finger-pointing way."

I'll take a shot, Einstein. It was a neighbor or someone who knew a neighbor. I know the pets who live in my neighborhood, don't you?

    Sheesh!

"Anon 3:48, don't be an ass. Do you also think women should stay home after dark so they don't get raped?"

    What an ASSinine analogy.

Letting a pet cat run loose without supervision is analogous to letting a toddler run loose without supervision. Like toddlers they are easy prey for larger predators, whether those predators are sentient - i.e. larger animals or psycho humans - or not - i.e. motorized vehicles.

Presumably adult women are able to look out for themselves. But that has absolutely nothing to do with the issue of being a responsible pet owner.

Nobody is SAYING it's an excuse. You apparently have poor reading comprehension; I specifically said it wasn't an excuse.

But the bottom line is, if the cat owners were responsible, the sick fuck who killed the cat - whoever it was, and I AM suspicious of the circumstances - wouldn't have been able to get his hands on it.

    Get it now?

What a horrible story! Makes me think of Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction". Only sick ass people can do things like this and live with themselves. As an animal lover and the proud mamma to 3 kitties i went right over to Ken Aden's page and made a $25 donation. While it won't help those poor kids get over this, it may help get Ken elected.
And i agree with many of your comments here-this level of ugliness was unleashed the evening Palin made her acceptance speech. What could possibly have happened to that woman to make her so vile, ugly and viscous inside? And loved the Chris Christie comment - way to keep it classy Sarah! She just can't help herself, the trash that she is just seeps into everything she says and does.
Hey Sarah, how's that hockey mom /family values thing workin' out for ya? Another daughter preggers before she can even graduate-your doing a fine job there missy! Somebody call CPS and get that poor kid Piper out of the house before she ends up like her sisters-barefoot and pregnant with no job and little to no education.

"You are aware that you do the same thing to conservatives right? Don't group all of your political opposites with psychopaths. Both parties have them. You're helping nothing by grouping everyone and condemning one huge , multi faceted party. At least reublican bloggers generally don't print stuff that's 100% made up, something you can't claim about your blog."

You again with your irony and utter lack of self awareness doing exactly what you're accusing others of, EVEN AS YOU ACCUSE THEM OF IT.

    You're hilarious! Also, a psychopath.

Where I live, people are required to keep both cats and dogs under control. NEITHER are allowed to run loose. Despite that, I do see a neighbor's cat in my yard from time to time - and that cat won't let anyone get near it. I HAVE seen it nearly get hit by a car when running across the street.

And the bottom line still is if a cat owner lets his cat run loose, then he's responsible for what happens to the cat.

Or don't you think Mitt Romney was responsible for Seamus shitting all over his car?

  79. To anyone here who wonders how in the world an enemy could possibly know which pet belonged to this family...

...are you SERIOUS? I mean REALLY!

Neighbors are very likely to know which pet belongs to which house/family. Not all neighbors are friends or have the same political leanings. And even people who aren't neighbors would only need to do a day or two of surveillance to know that a certain family has a certain cat.

ALL signs point to this being exactly what it looks like, a horribly sick person who is sending a vile political message to this man at the expense of his children and their kitty.

Given the viciousness of the crime and the total disregard for the emotional well-being of the four children, the chances of this being anything but what it looks like are slim to none. We're not talking about slashed tires or a spray painted door, after all.

This sickens and saddens me and makes me fearful that more blood will be shed. We all know that if someone will abuse an animal, that person is capable of abusing (or worse) a person. This wave of hatred, whether you pinpoint it at what McCain unleashed or the constant drumbeat of the far right wing media, is a genie that might not be able to be put back in the bottle since no Republican leader is standing up to say let's be decent and respectful (well, Huntsman made a feeble attempt). Just flipping radio stations in the car tonight and caught a few minutes of Mark Levin - the AARP is an evil leftist organization (so join this other right wing alternative for less than a dollar a day!) and Obama's words of fairness and equality means that he will take away your individual liberty and freedom etc. The Republican Party is the party of hate and fearmongering.

What the hell are you talking about? I was making a point about your ridiculous statement that an enemy couldn't possible know whose cat it was. I know my neighbors' pets, even the neighbors I'm not friends with. Don't you?

There are very few offenses that lead me to the mindset to where I could easily put a bullet into a person's head: wanton slaughter and mistreatment of animals, whatever the reason, is one of the offenses that make me want to put a bullet right into the head of the offender, without guilt, and certainly without malice.

Unfortunately you have lost complete focus on the subject matter. This is not about "cats running loose" and getting randomly killed because the owner didn't have the cat in the house.

It's not my fault you are being deliberately obtuse. The only conclusion I can come to is, that you must be a republican asshat troll who likes to derail the discussion. Therefore I will let you continue.

And thanks for confirming that you are an idiot. If you noticed I directed my comment to "idiots".

    Everyday Freethought @1:11

I couldn't agree more, thanks for your eloquent comment, every word of it is true.

The drumbeat started the moment Sarah set foot on the stage, and continues today. Santorum lives up to his name, he brought the Obama is a Muslim meme and ratcheted it up
    http://bobcesca.com/blog-archives/2012/01/blast-from-the-2008-past-an-avowed-muslim.html

And Boehner, the pos, already chimed in and attacked the State of the Union speech by lieing about our President, based solely on the short clip provided by the white house.

Anyone who wastes a living creature, someone's pet, to make political points is a sick and twisted individual.

I got this in an Act Blue e-mail, and it literally made me ill.

    Obama 2012 - he's our only hope.
