Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

Why some religious faiths attack the teaching of Evolution so aggressively.
Yes, you evolve & grow up and put away childish things -- like believing in Santa and the Tooth Fairy.
"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." 1st Corinthians 13:11
Correction, some *factions* of the Chrisian faith are terrified of evolution. Not the faith as a whole.
But I can see why there's this misunderstanding. For years, the media has only covered the rightwing fundamentalist buffoons, effectivly giving these louts an undeserved authority to speak for the faith. Meanwhile, any Christian rebuttals to this vicious interpretation of the faith are only published in blogs and less-read publications.
As far as I know, it is only fanatical fundamentalist Christians who are aggressively fighting the teaching of evolution. Are there other faiths involved?
This graphic represents wishful thinking on some people's parts.
Anonymous said... A thought to ponder on - perhaps God created the first lowly creature and then allowed evolution to evolve. 4:56 AM ---------------------- Many, many, Christians believe something along these lines; that God created the universe, and it has evolved for billions upon billions of years.
Many people believe in a deity and in evolution, and find the simplistic, young-earth, anti-evolution, bible-as-science-textbook, creationist/ID belief system to be spiritually and intellectually stunted and bankrupt.
I think it's because it is their hold over ppl. Religion is a big money making business. If they can't scare or have power over ppl they won't have ppl sending them money, for their lifestyles. The older I get, I see -it's all religions that do this.
I believe when my 3&4th grade teacher tried to teach evolution LOL. I'm African American and she was/is Jewish, so she didn't believe in the stuff she was force to teach. So, here is this Jewish woman trying to teach a classroom full of AA kids that we evolved from ape. I got upset and told her I didn't come from an ape, you may have but I didn't!!! I came my mom womb and my mom is not an ape!!! LOL... I rejected evolution as a child and will never believe in it...
I believe in both creation and science... I don't believe that the earth is 6000 years old, it can be trillions.. Gen. 1:1 In the beginning God created the haven and the earth... Beginning mean dateless pass, it don't have a date on it. Scientist proven that the earth was once destroyed along with every living creature and plant, this was before Noah. There used to be one body of water and one body of land. If you look at the globe, you can tell they all used to connect and splited.
Evolution says we begin with a cell, where the cell came from? Who created the cell?
Anonymous said... 6:04 AM "Now, hold on here! I thought we were fish, grew legs, and walked out of the ocean!"
Well, I heard we were first a cell, than a fish, than ape and than a cave man and finally we decided to walk straight on our two feet LOL... I will stick with creation...
Excellent. I hope we do evolve one day to the point of throwing out the religious rhetoric and stories. Only then can we begin to discover the truth of where we come from and why- might even be that there IS a higher being than ourselves. But religion, as humans have created it, is not the answer. Let's use our brains, science and discovery, not instilled fear of the unknown.
I don't really see that Evolution is a threat to religion, though it is to closed mindedness.
It is interesting that in the scientific community, even the hard sciences like physics, some scientists become less religious as they age and some more religious.
I do think that a belief in a world that is not circumscribed by the limited reality of a given religion is a threat to each bureaucratic religious entity. However a world view of faith and belief and love of all creation could over time help bring greater peace and greater care of the earth and its riches.
I live in the DC area these days with my brother. Each year we go to the National (really Episcopal) Cathedral for a concert given by the Folger Library. I love the music but spend most of my time in that ginormous building mourning the loss of the mountains and forests which were destroyed to create such a mortally vainglorious structure. I cannot believe that a God of the universe, if there is one, is pleased with or flattered by destruction of life that such a building brought about.
There are no lilies growing in the fields from which such structures were torn.
I'll take science over religion. Once had a teacher who believed the earth and it's inhabitants were part of a science experient some God started. He also believed insurance was wearing a belt AND suspenders.
I like the graphic, but where does the missing link (Sarah) fit in?
Thanks for these posts, always love reading the comments.
It's not just science that is under attack. It's any "secular" education. Santorum attacks higher education unless it's at a church school. Here's a quote from yesterday:
"It's no wonder President Obama wants every kid to go college," Santorum said Wednesday in Florida, according to CBS News. "The indoctrination that occurs in American universities is one of the keys to the left holding and maintaining power in America. And it is indoctrination. If it was the other way around, the ACLU would be out there making sure there wasn't one penny of government dollars going to colleges and universities, right?"
"If they teach radical secular ideology, they get all the government support that they can possibly give them," Santorum continued. "Because, you know, 62 percent of children who enter college with a faith conviction leave without it." http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/gop-presidential-primary/206633-santorum-says-obama-wants-more-americans-to-go-to-college-so-they-can-be-indoctrinated

Gryphen, you really seem to have your "panties in a wad" over religion these days.

Same old.
Newt's banging his "war on religion" drum again. Can we respond every time with, "No , but the GOP is waging war on the Constitution!"

ReplyDeleteAny people of faith who fear such an outcome have no faith. Those who "spread the word" out of fear are misguided.
ReplyDelete@4:56 AM "God" is an invention of man. "Gods" were an invention of past civilizations (e.g. Greek, Roman).

Which leads to many more questions - why?
what is the end point?
did this god want or need to use evolution?
for starters

Hmmm...did man invent pi (π) or discover it? On a related note, π does not exist, nor do perfect circles.

ReplyDeleteWouldn't a loving god want that?
Oh look !!! A picture of the whole republican party in one place!! No, not the evolution depiction - the GARBAGE CAN.

Yup. Why should that not be the grand plan.
God doesn't micro manage our lives, why should she/he micro manage mother nature, or the cosmos?

Regarding the foolish quote from ol' Frothy Santorum, there is no such thing as a "radical secular" education, or anything else. It's an oxymoron.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.answers.com/topic/secular
"Sectarian" can include "radical", but "secular" cannot.
