Did the Komen Foundation's politically motivated attempt to punish Planned Parenthood for providing contraception and abortions, actually do advocates for women's reproductive rights a favor?

Courtesy of Salon:

Practically since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, reproductive rights activists have been left to play stilted defense against ideological opponents who grabbed the language of morality, life, love and family as their own, always deploying it with reference to the fetus. The rhetoric around reproductive rights, which has more recently begun to creep into arguments over contraception, has become suffocating in its emotional self-righteousness, but too muscular, too ubiquitous to effectively combat.

But the overreach by the Komen foundation, while surely intended to strike yet another blow on the side of antiabortion activism, succeeded instead in waking a powerful constituency — armed with precisely the language and emotional heft they’ve been lacking for too long.

That this week’s blow against Planned Parenthood came not directly from John Boehner’s House of Representatives – which, ever since taking power a year ago promising to focus on jobs, has manfully focused on the single task of attacking women’s reproductive rights – but instead from a popular, officially nonpartisan organization dedicated wholly to women’s healthcare somehow brought this argument into the open.

The response to Komen was surely so tinderbox explosive because it had been building with every politically theatrical investigation launched by Cliff Stearns and every grisly abortion scene enacted on the House floor by U.S. Rep. Chris Smith. But it was not just Washington wonkery, and was not ginned up or amplified by professional political cranks. It was the reflexive kick of a shin hit just below the knee, and the visceral anger spilled everywhere, from a Planned Parenthood Saved Me tumblr and onto Facebook, where people posted images of Komen’s pink ribbon cut in half. It poured from bank accounts, including that of New York Mayor and former Republican Michael Bloomberg.

More than that, though: The starkly observable attack against something as crucial and basic as breast exams for poor women, as well as the fact that so many divergent voices were pulled into it, meant that the conversation was not about partisan politics; it was about women. For the first time in what feels like forever, passion and fury were being loudly, proudly given in a full-throated voice, on behalf of women – women as moral actors; women as citizens with rights, health, bodies, freedoms; women as people with families and economic concerns.

Now I have to admit that I was completely unaware of how politicized fundraising for women's health issues had become, and I was surprised at how devious the Right Wing had been in essentially covertly taking over an organization and then implementing an anti-reproductive rights agenda.

So this bumbling attempt by the Komen Foundation, turned out to be for myself, and of course the readers of this blog, a teachable moment.

Actually everywhere you looked people were disgusted with the actions taken by Komen, and suddenly we realized that many of us had been "blinded by the pink" and were being tricked into funding an organization that was top heavy with administrators while only a portion of their donations were going to fight breast cancer. In fact some of the money was put aside to file lawsuits against other charities with the audacity to claim they were also fighting for a "cure."

The lesson that I took away from all of this is that the Right Wing was absolutely determined to make damn sure women had no control over their own reproductive rights by any means possible, even if that meant putting women's health in jeopardy.

I also learned that it is always better to give your donations DIRECTLY to the organizations that are on the front lines, whether it be the American Cancer Society to help fight this terrible disease, or Planned Parenthood to help millions of women get access to affordable health care and contraception.

And finally I learned that there is nothing "pink" or pretty about breast cancer, as this video put together by a brave cancer survivor graphically explains. (Warning NSFW.)

So in the end this incident, as painful and unsettling as it was, may just turn out to be the wake up call that those fighting for the heath and safety of women everywhere needed to get them motivated to fight back against the conservative machine that is using guilt and out dated religious traditions to destroy a woman's right to choose what she does with her body.

It backfired in a huge way, because it exposed Karen Handel for the RWNJ she is, and in turn exposed yet another backdoor way to jam Planned Parenthood. If Komen wants to restore its credibility, they need to get rid of this ideologue. It's scary to contemplate how many women would have been doomed to succumb to breast cancer if Komens' decision had been allowed to stand.

  2. I would go even further and say that mainstream cancer activism and almost all funding and research is misplaced in ONLY looking for cures. The real problem and issue is, why are so many people getting cancer in the first place? The answer to that of course is industrial civilization, which doesn't want to be accountable for pollution. Our environment is steeped in toxic chemicals and gases as I chronicle here: http://witsendnj.blogspot.com/2012/02/when-vegetation-rioted-earth-and-big.html

When cancer hits home as it did for me, it becomes apparent that society is willing to accept a certain amount of "collateral damage" in order to feed insatiable patterns of consumption without paying directly for the externalities.

Once again, this epic fail by the right wing can be attributed to hubris. These women running Komen (esp. Karen Handel) truly believed that their contributors would just fall in line. It NEVER occurred to them that there were a large number of women who would stand up and fight for PP, women who've actually used PP in the past (you know, the 99% who haven't always has $$ or insurance to pay for medical care). Even Republican women can separate the work PP does in women's health care vs. the abortion services it provides. It continually astounds me as to how tone-deaf these tea-party/evangelical types can be. Komen is destroyed thanks to Handel and her agenda. She single-handedly brought down one of America's most respected charities. (Never mind the fact that it probably should have been brought down, considering what has been revealed.) The good news is Washington has now seen what happens when the sleeping giantess is awoken. Maybe they'll back off their assault on PP if they think they'll lose too many votes from women.

Except that we KNOW it was ginned up and amplified by professional political cranks.

Handel - failed extreme right wing GOP candidate for governor of Georgia who promised to defund PP.

Brinker - Bush Pioneer and deep into GOP politics.

Thompson - Also deeply involved in GOP politics.

This is what activism looks like. From the Wisconsin recall efforts, to the defeat of the anti-labor proposition in Ohio, to the reversal of banks charging a debit fee after loud public outcries, this is what happens when we stand up and say "No More."

The Republicans victories in 2010 went right to their heads and they thought they could take their wing nut policies and (to quote a famous former governor) jam them down out throats.

We can stand up to them. We have stood up to them. And we will stand up to them. Enough is enough.

What I find truly remarkable is that Komen didn't have a very good handle (no that's not a pun!) on their contributors. I would assume that the majority of the women who do the walks and work at the community level are progressives. Progressives have always supported women's issues in greater number than conservative women, even though the people running Komen are all rich, white conservatives. Were they so blind that they didn't even anticipate the backlash?

I would like to see accurate, thorough vetting done on EVERY charitable non-profit and politcal PACs/organization that solicits donations from the public and disclosure of every single behind the scenes association, individual, group, and/or corporation.

No more hiding behind subterfuge or misleading financial statements. I believe there a lot more major non-profit organizations out there that are basically in bed with the RWNJs, Big Business, and Xtian Xtremists or exist to funnel money into their own pockets!

I just had a thought. Maybe it has merit, maybe it doesn't. But I've been arguing with right to life friends over this issue and they always throw one thing in my face as their end all argument. A million kids a year are being murdered by abortion. Now I don't equate abortion with murder. It does prevent a life from being born, but so does menstruation and masturbation. (not to mention other sex acts) But so does celibacy. Celibacy prevents children from being born. Is that a selfish act? But I digress.

My thought was, as we all know because of Sarah Palin's "whiteout", there is no such thing as a miscarriage in a hospital. They are called abortions, or spontaneous abortions, I believe. Five years ago my wife was about 20 weeks along and woke up cramping. I got her to the emergency room, but there was nothing to be done to save the fetus and she miscarried. In other words, she had an abortion in hospital terms.

So what I am asking, does anybody know if the numbers they post for abortions every year include miscarriages or spontaneous abortions that happen in hospitals? Or are the numbers posted only for elective abortions?

It would certainly drastically reduce the number of actual elective abortions performed if spontaneous abortions are included in those numbers. And it would also lessen the impact the numbers my friends throw out, as excuses not to support women's reproductive rights.

    Rick

The one percent wants poor people, especially poor white people, to serve as soldiers and caddies. They also want to dip into that group for their bodyguards and mistresses. They may even adopt one of those kids from time to time if they can’t have their own. Of course they don’t want them to have abortions or contraception.

They have to act as if those services should be universally denied, but it’s intended for white women. None of my black coworkers were ever harassed for not having enough children, but I was, repeatedly.

I agree, Gryphen. As the granddaughter of a breast cancer survivor (almost 5-years at her death, and who would now be mortified that her memorial donations went to this 'charity'), our family has always noticed that pink ribbon 'stuff,' but I will no longer buy it- or register for their walk/run this year that I was training for. I'm thinking I'll still try to raise money for something like ACS in her name instead.

As an additional piece of good news- I believe your post the other day said that over $3M has been donated to PP since this started- Komen's grant in 2010 (according to ABC's nightly news last Thursday) was only something like $680K! Imagine how many more women that almost-$2.5M will help!

IMO many were 'woke up & motivated' to what was happening but there were many more that as much as you talk and try to get your voice heard 'inside the bubble of DC' on these issues to fight back -- they don't hear you -- you don't get heard. People should realize there are people and organizations that have been fighting this 'crushing of women's rights' but there's no coverage of it, no stories written.

That Komen stepped it in was a good thing in that voices did get heard. The social media worked like a charm and Komen, the media and DC were forced to listen.

Now that Komen has politicized themselves, even though they deny it -- time to have their non-profit tax status taken away. It's the same as churches and organizations stepping in the political arena.

I can't seem to get to the last page of comments on the Trig post so I'm pasting this here for Sarah to read:
Sarah named Trig after his condition (Tri-G). She thinks this was cute and not abusive at all. Think Van Palin (VP...Vice President) (Paxton....the mastermind)
Sarah refers to babies as puppies. She thinks this is clever code. It has nothing to do with the way she treats human babies.
She faked a special needs pregnancy to cover for underage, unmarried Bristol's first baby born in February 2008 (the original Tripp named after his granddad's prostitute).

PS-Sarah posts the troll comments herself here. You really think anyone else cares enough about her to do it for her? Bristol, Willow? Yeah right. They hate Sarah and laugh at the comments here that bash her. They won't even get her medical intervention to address her rapidly deteriorating health. You think they'd bother defending here on one blog on the internet?

I'm delighted that Komen has been hit and hit hard in that it had attained the status of being 'too big to fail' -- much the same as the banks & insurance companies.

It has been exposed to so many people now how top heavy the organization is and you could almost hear 'gasps' by many through your computer when many learned of this.

Komen also without giving the public much info, removed grants for stem cell research. That's a huge issue too in that it exposes they're more interested in 'keeping cancer alive' and only looking at 'limited treatments' -- not the cause.

For the mega millions & billions that has been donated anddistributed for research (limited and almost a joke now) and treatment -- then why no change in treatment for decades?? It's a business now -- a profit business and they have no desire for it to go away.

How close are the Komen's et al and Pharma?? I'd say they're sleeping together -- just don't get any STD's as that would show up in documents and force them out of the closet.

Hell - I yearn for those long gone true investigative reporters, journalists.

  25. Gryph, I am a former race chair in South Florida and have given many years and dollars to Komen so I feel betrayed, as do thousands of others.

But on the defending the trademark issue, I have to tell you (as a former trademark attorney) that trademark owners have an affirmative legal obligation to protect their trademark from use by others. Failure to do so can lead to losing the mark. So I would cut them some slack on that issue.

On every other issue relating to Komen, you are spot on. And it did awaken a sleeping giant, for which I am grateful!

Karen Handel not only lost Komen hundreds of thousands of dollars (thanks to all the people who now swear they won't donate), she also CAUSED people to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood.

I'm also hoping all this publicity and dialog will finally put an end to the ridiculous and insulting notion that abortion causes breast cancer.

I have to admit to a not very gracious celebration of schadenfreude over this. I work for a health-related nonprofit and Komen has been a recognized bully with questionable priorities for years. I know groups who were sued by Komen for using the phrase 'for the cure' in their educational materials and fundraising activities--none of whom were remotely related to breast cancer and posed no threat to Komen. It was petty and mean on their part.

It was impossible to get any traction if you criticized them, though, as the media and powerful interests in DC were 'partners' with them and had no interest in exposing themselves to scrutiny by association. The public reacted to any criticism of the org as an attack on breast cancer. It was a no-win situation for the smaller groups Komen's tactics and practices were harming.

They were the only group with enough clout to bring themselves down and they, happily, obliged.

Yes, I think this whole giant kerfuffle was a huge favor:

-- It confirmed women's respect for PP
-- Confirmed women's ability to mobilize
-- Confirmed that this is a BIG DEAL
-- It showed flaws in K that they might fix
-- It showed that Komen lied*
-- It taught me a LOT about K and PP

*Lying: Early quotes by Ari Fleischer said he was hired to help K get rid of PP. His solution? Yes, hire the outside firm, but he also interviewed Handler, who did what she was then hired to do. Brinker lied on Andrea Mitchell, saying Handler had nothing to do with it -- a nice deflection of responsibility from underling Handler to the Board. I can respect a lie like that. Remember that the top mgmt of K (like Brinker) are hi-profile Repubs.

But we also see that K has done a lot of good. The inevitable drop in support for them will help all realize that pro-choice and anti-choice politics have no place in heath care. Which is a good lesson all around.

Majority of conservatives oppose cancer screening at Planned Parenthood

Isn't that something? For a group of people who claim to support "life"—not to mention their insistence that they really want to help women when it comes to making the right decisions about their health care—it's pretty striking that they'd rather see women die of cancer than get medical care at Planned Parenthood. Guess the sanctity of their political opposition to women's health care trumps the "sanctity of life."

    Damage done to Komen brand

A new Daily Kos-Public Policy Polling survey released today captures public sentiment on the issue of Susan G. Komen's withdrawal of funding from Planned Parenthood and the subsequent firestorm. The survey was Feb 3-4, 1000 adults, margin of error of plus/minus 3.1%.

In the survey, Komen clearly takes some hits both with the decision and the response of donors and volunteers. It was widely covered, and most of the public is aware of the controversy:

Many, many excellent comments here. Especially liked Rick's input that, yes, menstruation and chastity destroy viable eggs, just as masturbation and celibacy destroy viable sperm. And yes, a spontaneous abortion is an abortion; it stops a beating heart and destroys a human life – thus making God the biggest abortionist on the planet.

Is there ANYTHING about the folly of invading the privacy of other people's lives that these people are able to understand? Can't they just 'get a life' so they can stop invading other people's lives? I think the answer is no, because exercising power over others, rather than promoting life of any kind, is really what it's all about for them.

You might want to research the American Cancer Society before recommending them. They are a very political organization as well. It's a great idea to donate directly to Planned Parenthood though. They do so much for women and I'm sick of the right using them as a punching bag.

Santorum Longs For Good Old Days Of ‘Shadow Abortions’ When Women Obtained Back-Alley Procedures

Look at what’s happened just in our tolerance for abortion. Fifty years ago…60 years ago, people who did abortions were in the shadows, people who were considered really bad doctors. Now, abortion is something to that is just accepted. This is the erosion. And it happens in the medical profession. It happened very fast. And I think Obamacare will lead us down that road.

Gail at 6:56 I just now saw your post and I really really agree with you. It is the same with auto-immune diseases.
All these illnesses are really on the rise in a huge way due to the industrial revolution- and so many unhealthy consumer products. People have no idea what a problem this is until they read about or experience it.

This is also why health care costs are so high.
Aren't there any smart people in congress anymore who will fight companies that make all these chemicals in products that are killing Americans??

If the GOP gets power it will be even worse although Democrats are to blame as well. And the libertarians want to get rid of the EPA. Anything for industries you know?

Fuck you, Komen, you've united us in our disgust for you.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the American Cancer Society spends far more money on administrative expenses than on research. It is probably MORE bloated at the top than Komen, simply because it has been raising money longer. You have to get closer to the scientists to avoid wasting most of your donation on overhead, fat salaries and mass mailings.

It should have been apparent after 9/11 and the Red Cross debacle (ironically, exposed by *gulp* Bill O'Reily, in what must be the only journalistic act of his life) that giving money to huge charities accomplishes nothing other than funding an administration.

Charities are required to pay out a mere TWENTY PERCENT (20%) of their intake!!! That means 80 cents on every dollar can be spent on things like expensive offices and furnishing for administrators, fundraisers (*chortle*) and travel, bla bla bla.

When you donate to a huge charity that offers funds to a variety of causes, even if your donation is earmarked to be used in a certain way, it is ultimately at the sole discretion of those who administer the funds just where that money is going.

In the case of Komen, unfortunately, like all good things in this world, it has now been poisoned from within, is hopelessly tarnished and co-opted.

The war against women continues, although with more transparency, after this deplorable incident.

Misogyny is the foundation of our civilization and religious teachings throughout the world.

We will never be cured as a race (of course, I refer to the human race) unless and until humans everywhere embrace their feminine side.

Curiously if that were to happen, we would see the end of world war as well as a pyramidical world economic scheme that excludes all but a tiny fraction from thriving.

There is a causal relationship between our violent, heartless, paranoid and over-controlled world and the deeply engrained hatred of women.

Actually the entire cancer industry is a money making scheme that suppresses natural approaches and gives false hope regarding chemotherapy. Mammograms are not preventative. They are diagnostic. They do not increase life span of cancer victims. And furthermore, in Europe, at least in some countries, they have moved on from radiating womens' breasts and have a better diagnostic tool that is painless and safe.
Mammograms are not safe, they actually cause cancer. Every mammogram increases your lifetime risk of cancer by one or two percent. Multiply that by 10 or 20 or more mammograms and see how the risk goes up.

Margaret and Helen have a thing or two to say about Komen. Here's a tease, but do go and read the whole entry, it's classic Helen!

...And speaking of pink, this whole mess with Komen should be a wake-up call to women everywhere. Komen knew damn well that this had nothing to do with mammograms and everything to do with politics. They just thought we wouldn’t notice because the ribbons were pink. They knew what they were getting when they hired Karen Handel. She ran for office in Georgia with a campaign promise to close down Planned Parenthood. Exactly what women’s health clinics did they think we women were using for years before we started racing for a cure? Did they think that the millions of us who had gone to Planned Parenthood before we had health insurance (and even after) weren’t aware of the services we were provided? Trust me. When you go to a place and have a doctor poke around your hoo-ha, you pay attention.

Nancy Brinker, shame on you. You honestly thought your fellow women were so stupid that we would think your reason for defunding Planned Parenthood was somehow different than the never-ending cry for defunding that comes from the far right every election cycle? Well I am here to tell you that it is bad enough when it comes from the male-dominated, testosterone-filled legislatures. But when it comes from a supposedly apolitical women’s health organization, it’s unforgiveable. Your original intent when you started this organization was noble and I commend you. But honey, you have lost your way. So much so that you were willing to put tens of thousands of women in harm’s way because the Republican party wants to keep women barefoot and pregnant.

I, for one, am tired of pink razors. And I know I speak for millions of women when I say

They are certainly in the hospital records as an abortion, but do they get counted in the overall abortion rate? Does anyone know?

It was so blatantly obvious that this was truly ALL POLITICAL!! By trying to lie and manipulate what really happened, Komen showed their true colors about what they are NOW all about. Sad to see Susan Komen's sister, a very highly paid executive, get out there and try to spin it all. I feel so sorry for the memory of Susan Komen, and think her sister did her a great disservice. That is what happens when people like her start to get involved in politics, when they certainly have no business getting into it in the first place.

Karen Handel has certainly got in there and played real dirty politics. She should resign, but probably will not and will continue to draw a hefty salary.

No more money for Komen from us - this has only made us more aware of how much good Planned Parenthood does - we'll contribute to them directly, and tell them why we are doing it!

Why Susan G. Komen Yanked Planned Parenthood

Pro-“life” activists are like cancer: they’re ubiquitous, often go undetected until their damage is irreversible, and heartbreakingly detrimental to women’s health.

Which is why it’s so mind-blowing that one of the country’s most powerful and well-known cancer charities has teamed up with pro-life activists to deny women lifesaving breast cancer screenings.

Ugh. For real, buttholes? I would be irate if I wasn’t so used to this bullshit.

When news first broke that the Susan G Koman foundation yanked breast cancer screening funding from Planned Parenthood, people were dumbfounded. Huh/What/Why/How? What were they thinking? Why would they do that? How could anyone have a problem with Planned Parenthood providing breast cancer screenings? But to understand how something like this could happen, you have to understand the pro-life movement, which is at the heart of the split.

I’ve worked in the reproductive rights field for over ten years and I know more about pro-life activists than they know about themselves. I have spent hundreds of thousands of hours studying their materials, debating them, dodging their attacks, and, yes, secretly helping them get abortions and birth control behind their community’s back (it happens more than you think). I know a thing or two about the true motive of the anti-choice movement, and I promise you this:

It has absolutely nothing to do with saving babies or helping women. Nothing.

Rick -- I wouldn't pay much attention "number of abortions," spontaneous or induced. An early-stage abortion used to be called a D&C (dilation and curettage) and can be done for other reasons than aborting a fetus. Lots of ways to weasel-word things if one wants to.

And whether spontaneous or induced, some abortions do not kill a fetus but remove one who has already died.

So I'd say the exact numbers will never be available. Nor do they need to be.

P.S. I think pro-choice and anti-choice are better terms for the two sides (because no one I've ever heard of is anti-life or pro-abortion).

If there are any Mittens supporters out there, here's what he said:

Mitt Romney: Susan G. Komen Was Right to Cut Planned Parenthood

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney thrust himself into the the Susan G. Komen controversy on Monday when he said in a radio interview that he agreed with Komen's decision to cut Planned Parenthood funding.

When Minnesota radio host Scott Hennen asked Romney whether Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the leading U.S. anti-breast cancer charity, should continue to give Planned Parenthood grants for cancer screenings and mammogram referrals, Romney said, "I don't think so."

"I also feel that the government should cut off funding to Planned Parenthood," the former Massachusetts governor added. "Look, the idea that we're subsidizing an institution which is providing abortion, in my view, is wrong. Planned Parenthood ought to stand on their own feet, and should not get government subsidy."

Romney could not have picked a worse time to associate himself with Susan G. Komen's anti-Planned Parenthood agenda. The cancer charity is roiling in a massive backlash for announcing it would defund Planned Parenthood because of a congressional investigation. Karen Handel, Komen's staunchly anti-abortion vice president for public policy, was the main force behind the decision and the attempt to disguise it as nonpolitical, The Huffington Post reported on Sunday. Komen leadership last week reversed its Planned Parenthood decision and apologized.

Romney has a long way to go to convince conservatives of his anti-abortion credentials. He emphasized in the interview on Monday that he is a "pro-life individual" and was a "pro-life governor." Nevertheless, he sought Planned Parenthood's endorsement during his 2002 gubernatorial campaign, attended a Planned Parenthood fundraiser, and answered in a Planned Parenthood questionnaire that he supported state-funded abortions.

Rick....that is a very good question and I am hoping someone can answer it. Makes sense that they would count them as "abortions" to pad their numbers.

Whenever they give us those huge numbers, I have to think how different things would be if we added that many more kids to our country. Many schools are too full already and not able to afford to educate the kids they have. Also the social services would never be able to keep up with things.

PS...sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage many years ago and I got so tired of hearing that it was probably for the best. Might be so, but I didn't want to hear it.

I, personally, could never imagine getting an abortion, but I totally and completely anyone who feels that is the right decision for them at this point in their life.

The early admission or allegation that Ari Fleischer was conferring with Brinker about how to discontinue PP's funding seems to be turning into his just interviewing candidates.

Not so, according to this early report: "Fleischer indicated that he had discussed the Planned Parenthood issue with Komen’s CEO, Nancy Brinker, and that she was at her wits' end about how to proceed. Fleischer described himself as a longtime friend of Brinker."

To me, the evil Handler is a minor player who was hired to do exactly what she did. The larger sin is that Brinker wanted to get rid of PP and planned to do it, enlisting Fleisher to help.

Another gripe: Brinker is independently wealthy from her divorce settlement from Mr Brinker. She should be earning $1/year.

Never give Komen money. They are not what they want everyone to believe. The founder gave thousand of dollars to Bush 43 and he made her Ambassador to Hungary. They went against other breast cancer groups in advocating the use of drugs (that were untested for BC and could have been dangerous) and mammogram equipment that not only were donors to Komen but that Komen also owned stock, like GE and AstraZeneca. They have always been right-wing republicans. Beware.
