Rick Santorum goes the "Full Monty" on his dislike of public education, environmentalists, and....prenatal testing?

Over the weekend Rick "Frothy Mixture" Santorum decided to stop using that frustrating internal self editing process and just let his inner Cotton Mather run free.

Here is what he had to say, courtesy of the Huffington Post.

"I've repeatedly said I don't question the president's faith," Santorum told host Bob Schieffer, denying what some have said was a signal that Santorum had challenged the legitimacy of Obama's Christianity. "I've repeatedly said that I believe the president's Christian -- he says he's Christian. But I am talking about his worldview, the way he addresses problems in this country, and they're different than most people view it in America."

In other words, he's a Christian, but not the right KIND of Christian. I see what you did there Frothy.

In a speech to Tea Party conservatives on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, Santorum had dismissed Obama's politics as being based in "some phony theology."

"It's not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs," Santorum said. "It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology."

An incredulous Bob Schieffer began his interview with Santorum Sunday by asking, "What in the world were you talking about?"

"I was talking about the radical environmentalists," Santorum said, suggesting that they believe man should protect the earth, rather than "steward its resources." "I think that is a phony ideal. I don't believe that's what we're here to do ... We're not here to serve the earth. That is not the objective, man is the objective."

In other words, according to Santorum's "theology," the planet earth is specifically put here to be environmentally raped and  stripped of its resources even IF that condemns future generations to enormous suffering or even the end of the human race as we know it. So THAT'S what a Christian is?

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Santorum had also said that health insurance plans shouldn't be required to cover prenatal testing, because that testing results in more abortions, as well as contending that government-run public education was "anachronistic."

"Free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and therefore less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society," Santorum told the Ohio Christian Alliance conference.

Asked by Schieffer about his claims that prenatal testing leads to more abortions, Santorum insisted that this was "a fact."

"We're talking about specifically prenatal testing, and specifically amniocentesis, which is a procedure that actually creates a risk of having a miscarriage when you have it, and is done for the purposes of identifying maladies of a child in the womb. And in many cases -- and in fact in most cases -- most physicians recommend, if there is a problem, they recommend abortion," Santorum said.

On this last point it kind of sounds like Santorum is directly challenging Sarah Palin's pro-life stance, and special needs parenting credibility.

As she stated to the newspapers and in her book, pro-life Palin supposedly had the amniocentesis procedure done at 12 weeks, even though it is not supposed to be performed until between the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy. (Of course Palin had to have "had" the procedure, or else how could she explain knowing about Trig's condition before he was born?)

Here is Santorum saying that, not only does that procedure place the fetus at risk, but that there is no reason for an anti-abortion advocate to even have it done.

Aha! So the gauntlet has been thrown. What say you to that Sister Sarah?

And let's also remind ourselves that this rhetoric has done NOTHING to damage Santorum's standings with the faithful (As of right now he leads Romney by eight points nationally), and in fact this kind of talk might be the very thing that has brought him to the front of the pack.

So there you go Americans. THIS is who the Republicans think should be the leader of the free world.

Still considering staying home this November?

"We stand today at the symbolic crossroads of our nation's history, and all around us are monuments to those who have sustained us over the years in word or deed, the towering presence of the great emancipator who secured our union at the moment of its most perilous time," she says as images of monuments, presidents, Americana and herself appear on the screen."

As TPM Summarized the Obama campaign: GM is Alive, Bin Laden is dead. The economy is improving, and Obama just looks stronger every day...and that's before we remember the effectiveness of his actual campaign strategy AND his fundraising power.

And the GOP candidates are all on the wrong side of the wrong issues. Unforced errors left and right. Can't seem to stop themselves from doubling down on the stupid.

All with Sarah in the backseat.

  7. Again, the hypocrisy is astounding and the disconnect between the way santorum wants to control your life and how he lives his own.

I'm sure santorum and his wife had prenatal testing done on the pregnancy which resulted on the late term abortion his wife had.
There were problems with the babies kidneys which resulted in the surgery done in utero.

So again, another example of rickey doing what he wants to but feeling like he has the authority to tell the rest of us what to do.

Frothy Santorum (yuck!) is a buffoon. He is betting that the venerable old GOP tactic of pandering to the idiot base will once again yield a GOP victory. I believe that he is profoundly politically tone deaf and doesn't realize that the political winds have shifted and the idiot fringe foot soldiers of the GOP will no longer carry the day.

Undoubtedly, Santorum (yuck!) is a socially regressive frothy troglodyte, but I question how much of his red meat hyperbolic boilerplate nonsense he actually believes. Absolutely NOTHING he says has ANY connection to reality or the truth. He doesn't just exaggerate, he bends over and jams both arms way up his ass and extracts santorum covered turds (yuck!) which he lobs at the teabaggers. It is hard for me to believe that he really is stupid enough to believe what he says.

However, I could be wrong. Maybe he really IS that stupid.

Either way, Santorum (yuck!) would drive a sizable percentage of non non compos mentis Republicans to vote for President Obama instead of the 13th century social ideology of Ricky. The few members of the GOP who actually have brains recognize this. They know that Santorum (yuck!) as the GOP nominee would not only spell certain doom for any hope of even the remotest shadow of a reflection of a rumor of a chance of challenging President Obama, but could also spell doom for the very existence of the party itself.

If he is still on the ballot by the time of the NM primary, I would seriously consider crossing party lines and voting for Santorum (yuck!). I can think of no better way at wounding the moribund GOP. Either that or a vote for Paul.

    Such a hard decision.

Why has no one asked Santorum about all the prenatal testing that has identified conditions that can be fixed by surgery or other therapies while the baby is still in the womb OR helped families and medical professionals prepare to deal with complications that cannot be fixed prior to birth?

When I was born 50+ years ago, there was some concern about RH factor incompatability. There was no such thing as amniocentesis back then, but the doctor made sure to have extra blood available in case I was in distress at birth.

How many babies have been saved because prenatal testing warned the doctors to be ready for a problem they would otherwise have been unaware of?

And if a fetus is identified as being severely disabled and unable to live beyond birth, is it so wrong to NOT force the mother to carry it to term when there is no hope of life anyway?

Listen, Santorum is going to hang himself. Everyone I know - and no not all are progressives, are HORRIFIED by what he is saying. IF he is the nominee, Obama will be president again. I think even hardcore Republicans think 4 more of Obama is better than 8 possible years of Ayatollah Ricky (thanks anon 10:16)

My cousin had a miscarriage with her first child at almost 8 months along. It turns out the fetus had a genetic defect that she or her husband carried. It was devastating to her. Thanks to prenatal testing, she now has two healthy adolescent sons.

This is not a road anyone should go down. Anyone to the left of wacko righty extremist won't agree with him.

Just remember this Rick. When the dust has settled and you are either not the nominee or not the next President, you will have to live the rest of your miserable life with the knowledge that you lost your soul in the pursuit of unattanable power. Nice legacy for the family to carry. You make me sick.

This guy scares the hell out of me! I so dislike the extreme right of the Republican party! I'm tired of Santorum shoving his religion down our throats!
What happened to the fact that mixing government and religion is a no no? What fucking assholes! Sorry, but I'm so sick of their pushing their beliefs on the rest of us!

I was raised Catholic - but, no longer practice the faith. He's from the dark ages in his belief system and most Catholics no longer practice the teachings of the church as to reproduction especially as Santorum believes them to be. The majority of Catholics are and were on birth control pills since they came out in 1962.

I'll wager he is horrible in bed due to telling us we are not suppose to enjoy sex! His poor, poor wife! Bet she's never climaxed in all their married years! This guy makes my skin crawl and I also bet his wife does everything he tells her to do. Cannot imagine being controlled by someone like him! This guy is as bad to listen to and view as Gingrich and Palin.

Get out and vote in November! Reelect our wonderful President Obama. Thank God we have him!!! He's the only sane political figure out there!

Rick Santorum is just shy of actually saying what he truly believes: only the far-right Catholic church is correct.

This week he talked about The Church - several different times - as being the way we should mold our government. The Church for Rick is the Roman Catholic church - which even most American Catholics no longer follow in the letter of its law.

Goodness, this is truly scary. A theocracy is what Rick wants; everything he says follows ultra-conservative church doctrine.

I am so proud to be living a diverse country with many faiths and people of no faith all struggling to live together. When people like Rick try to bully us all, it is time to step up and vote to stop this madness.

Please get out the vote for President Obama and Democrats generally. No blue dog Dems, please; they are simply Republicans in disguise.

Talk about religious freedom and freedom from religion - we will never have either under Rick Santorum. He is a zealot.

Santorum Spokeswoman Misspeaks: Obama’s Energy Decisions Are Decided By His ‘Radical Islamic Policies’

Stewart was on the show to discuss the scrutiny that Santorum is now under as a potential GOP frontrunner. Mitchell asked her why Santorum tried to frame his differences with the President as a difference in values, specifically in comments that had been pointed out by Robert Gibbs. This was her response:

“[Santorum] wasn’t questioning the President’s character. He wasn’t questioning the President’s religion. As he said, he clarified the statement, he was talking about radical environmentalists. There is a type of theological secularism when it comes to the global warmists of the country. That’s what he was referring to. He was referring to the President’s policies in terms of the radical Islamic policies the President has specifically in terms of energy exploration. Case in point, the Keystone Pipeline.”

Shortly after, Stewart called into the show to explain that that wasn’t what she meant. However, that wasn’t the end of it.

I guess it's beyond his comprehension that people who have amnios done and end up with tentative DS or other diagnoses are doing so in order not to terminate, but to plan ahead. Take Palin for example- her claim that she knew about Trig's diagnosis could/should have led her to do things like find a team of doctors for him- a pediatrician who has experience with DS babies and specialists if needed, *a hospital with a NICU/the ability to care for any of the possible things that can go wrong with a DS delivery*, and even just to mentally and emotionally prepare themselves for life with a child with DS.

I'm sure you've heard the interview he did with Caffeinated Thoughts, which included the "contraception is NOT okay" comment, but in the same interview, he includes this:

"Just like we have certifying organizations that accredit a college, we'll have certifying organizations that will accredit conservative professors. If you are to be eligible for federal funds, you'll have to provide an equal number of conservative professors as liberal professors."

(CNN) - Rick Santorum on Monday denied he was comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler while using a World War II analogy the previous day.

From what Palin has said in the past, she holds very similar religious beliefs as Santorum, but has been tutored enough to know it is not wise political in voicing radical religious beliefs like Santorum is doing. You would think Palin would be endorsing Santorum, but she knows to do so would only make herself even more unpopular than she already is.

@ 10:59AM "Trig was already born when they found out he had Down Syndrome..chalk it up as another Palin BS story."

interesting, because she claims she had the amnio late fall 2007. IOW - Trig had been born by then, (maybe Trig & Tripp if you go with the twin theory). I've always suspected at least one of them was born Dec. 2007. I saw paperwork re: Levi custody issue when Bristol asked that it be a closed court. The paperwork said birth year was 2007. Within hours, the same document (on the internet) said 2008.

It's too confusing and the Palins count on that. The babies born less than a year apart - maybe. The similar names. The hooker's name.... Levi may not be the father, but may know or be related to the father.

The story is too sordid to be told. That's what everyone says.

What could that mean? An undercover investigation that is going to explode? Something international?? Exploitation? Bribery? Tax Evasion? All of the above?

Also, too, the video has a support SarahPac at end. Shows she must be "broker" and "broker" each day. LOL

It's difficult to recall a presidential candidate who had such a poor grasp of the basic facts of history than Rick Santorum. He's mangled the Crusades. Less than two weeks ago, he botched the French Revolution. And Saturday, he revealed an astonishing ignorance of U.S. history as well with his remarks on public education.

At one appearance here, he said the idea of schools run by the federal government or by state governments was “anachronistic.” Mr. Santorum did not say public schools were a bad idea, and he said that there was a role for government help in education.

“Yes the government can help,” Mr. Santorum added. “But the idea that the federal government should be running schools, frankly much less that the state government should be running schools, is anachronistic. It goes back to the time of industrialization of America when people came off the farms where they did home-school or have the little neighborhood school, and into these big factories, so we built equal factories called public schools."

    That's absolutely false.

The idea that the government should be running schools goes back to the Founders and Thomas Jefferson, who originally promoted public education in his home state of Virginia.

To secure the broadest level of popular education Jefferson prepared his "Bill for the More General Diffusion of Knowledge" as part of the revision of Virginia's laws. As chair of the committee, Jefferson proposed a three level system in 1779, (never adopted): three years of primary education for all girls and boys; advanced studies for a select number of boys; a state scholarship to the College of William and Mary for one boy from each district every two years.

Jefferson, who so strongly believed that government-run public education was absolutely necessary for a healthy democracy, also proposed it at the federal level in his 1806 State of the Union address.

Their patriotism would certainly prefer its continuance and application to the great purposes of the public education, roads, rivers, canals, and such other objects of public improvement as it may be thought proper to add to the constitutional enumeration of Federal powers.

Santorum is clearly and deliberately distorting the facts of history to comport with his right-wing ideology. There's something creepily fascist about his revisionism.

  62. Anon 11:52 I think Karen S's abortion is somewhat off limits. It was a late term, partial birth abortion to save the life of the mother when there was no chance the fetus would ever be a viable human baby. Criticizing her having that is the wrong message. Criticizing his husband's proclamations that he wouldn't allow this for any other woman is definitely in order.

  63. Not sure, but Sarah may be suggesting she is just like George:

I am on record as acknowledging President Washington as my favorite Founder precisely because of that heart. He did not seek power. He accepted it reluctantly. He answered the call, offered himself up in the name of service, and helped to usher in a new day. At a time when he could have remained in office perpetually, as some expected, he chose to return to life as a citizen rather than seek a third term. He fulfilled his destiny, and his legacy is secure.

Can't wait til Fox Noise asks Mrs. Palin what she thinks about Santorum's no-prenatal testing rule.

10:44 is right: no one, absolutely no one, is worse in bed than a controlling, dictatorial male – and this is a massive understatement.

Donald Trump is right: Santorum is beyond a Christmas present to democrats. Ironically, he is the very personification of the kind of religious persecution in England that forced the pilgrims to flee to America. Whatever Christian background our nation may boast of was comprised mostly of a huge group of protestants trying to flee from Europe's Catholic tyranny (and no, it they were definitely NOT trying to flee from European socialism). Look it up!

10:52 is also on point: the administration is merely requiring that the Keystone project receive more thorough scrutiny; it did not issue a denial, but only a postponement to permit further, in-depth study. This is due solely to the widespread and highly dangerous public health risks that could result from the fracking pollution of our nation's water supply, something that would be irreparable. The president's concerns are already well-established by scientific studies and epidemiological statistics. Having a president who actually cares whether people get cancer from their drinking water is light years removed from anything that could even remotely be described as "radical Islamic policy," and to suggest that they are one and the same is beyond laughable. Such allegations are even beyond the realm of mental illness, as well as outside any bounds of decency and common sense.

Rick Santorum, a man who is clearly living in the wrong century, is Mary Queen of Scots in male drag, pure and simple. The only appropriate veep for such a candidacy would be a very drunk Mel Gibson.

"Happy Presidents’[sic] Day." - Sarah Palin

    twice!!

    11:32 AM

Sorry, but while it may seem odd, that spelling is actually correct. The day refers to more than one president, so it is presidents (plural) with a possessive (presidents').

However, you are not necessarily wrong as Wikipedia says the spelling and apostrophe is all in flux depending on whose style you use.

    From wikiped.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington%27s_Birthday

    Spelling

Because Presidents Day is not the official name of the federal holiday, there is variation in how it is rendered. Both Presidents Day and Presidents' Day are common today, and both are considered correct by dictionaries and usage manuals. Presidents' Day was once the predominant style, and it is still favored by the majority of significant authorities—notably, The Chicago Manual of Style (followed by most book publishers and some magazines), The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Webster's Third International Dictionary, and Garner's Modern American Usage. In recent years, as the use of attributive nouns (nouns acting as modifiers) has become more widespread, the popularity of "Presidents Day" has increased.[11] This style is favored by the Associated Press Stylebook (followed by most newspapers and some magazines) and the Writer's Digest Grammar Desk Reference (ISBN 978-1582973357).

The Ad: Sarah Palin, "Chords of Memory"

The Issues: Abraham Lincoln, America and the restoring of it, Ronald Reagan

The Message: Though she's not running for anything as far as we're aware, Palin has released this timely President's Day video scored to a speech she gave in Springfield, IL, where thousands of people flock every year to rifle through Abe's old things. While doing some rifling of her own, Palin found an old speech or something of Lincoln's and so wove those "chords of memory" into the fabric of her own stilted pontificating about God-blessed America and how we have to restore it because I guess God's blessings have worn off a bit or something. The point is: Hey, guys, remember Sarah Palin? Because she'd really like you to remember her and give money to her PAC. A handy way to remember her is that, according to this video at least, Sarah Palin is the second coming of Ronald Reagan.

Who It's For: People who forgot about Sarah Palin, people who like to be reminded about Sarah Palin, possibly Ronald Reagan's ghost

What Everyone Else Thinks: Most of this can't be Lincoln quotes, right?

The Effect: Yes, we are now reminded of Sarah Palin's existence! And of that time we went to Springfield and it was very hot and kinda boring and, oh man, the rest of that city is not very nice, is it? Poor Lincoln, having to live there and now everyone's tromping through his house, just so sad. Sorry, who or what were we talking about again? Michele Bachmann? I think we were talking about Michele Bachmann. C

The MI primary will be next week. I cannot wait until it's over; then the state will go back to relatively normal again. I think Rick Santorum is insane. He is certainly unqualified for any public office, just like that woman from Alaska, what's her name? And I simply cannot abide Mitt Romney who is now busy pretending that he's just a regular guy from Michigan. AAARRRGGGHHH! I'll be glad to cast my Democratic primary vote for Barack Obama. OBAMA 2012!

Two of the 4 remaining republican contenders have lost or will lose the primary in their own home states: Newt lost Virginia, where he lives, because he could not even come up with enough signatures to get himself on the ballot there. It now appears that Romney will lose his home state of Michigan (actually, the Romneys spend most of their time in their La Jolla, California villa). If Santorum were to lose the Pennsylvania primary, that would be 3 for 3. (Santorum lost his last Senate race in Pennsylvania by an 18% margin.) It's also highly likely that Ron Paul will lose the primary in his home state of Texas. That would be 4 for 4, with each one losing where the voters know them best.

The Palin-Tea Party curse has hit the republican party with a death blow. I predict they will soon go the way of the whigs. While the baggers said that their original intention was to take their base in a different direction, I don't think any of them originally intended for that direction to be 'off a cliff'.

As someone who's undergone amnio, I certainly questioned Sarah's tale. Amniocentesis requires a certain amount of fluid to be present that simply isn't there that early. Of course, why would anyone who would never consider abortion undergoing a procedure that carries even a small risk of miscarriage?

Of course, questioning Sarah's entire pregnancy is easy. :D

NO DOCTOR recommends abortion. They tell you the facts and let the parents make up their mind. Santorum is a foolish fool to say such stupid things.

@Anonymous 10:32--no one miscarries at eight months. From six months on, babies who die before birth are considered stillborn. I'm sure you're cousin was devastated by a loss so late in pregnancy. I'm glad she now has healthy children.

For Sarah's narrative of the Trig "pregnancy" to work, Sarah had to have "known" during "pregnancy" that she was carrying a DS baby. Otherwise, she could not have "chosen" not to abort a baby with known chromosomal defects.

That's the reason the "amnio" needs to be part of her story. She needs to appear to have made a "heroic choice" for life.

All a very cynical and politically motivated lie.

OK Rickie Man On Child. Assuming the Bible is literal. God gave Adam and Eve the perfect world of the Garden of Eden, and they destroyed a part of it they were not supposed to destroy, because they though they needed to consume that apple.
And God kicked their asses right out the door.

There is a moral in that story Rickie. What is it?

Put another way, did God give us this beautiful bountiful perfectly designed earth to destroy, or did he give it to us to cherish?

He went to a lot of trouble to make this earth with its balance of atmosphere, water, land, trees, grasses, animals and man kind.
Do you Rickie, think he entrusted us with taht work of art to destroy it?

I mean really Rickie to destroy God's gift? That was God's intent?

Elizabeth, I'd normally agree with your comment, but Rick Santorum called the baby "stillborn", named him Gabrial after an angel, and used him as a prop while campaignining for Governor of Pennsylvania. Karen also mentioned Gabriel in her book as "stillborn", without mention of her life being in danger or the partial birth issue, the hypocricy of this couple knows no bounds. It's ok for them, but not for others?

No prenatal testing for Santorum? Since when? When Karen was expecting Gabriel, due to a sonogram, which is a form of prenatal testing. It showed that the fetus had a fatal fetal flaw which would cause his death. The Santorums chose to have Karen undergo risky intrauterine surgery to try to correct the flaw. Karen developed an infection due to the risky surgery. She was given antibiotics to bring down her 105 degree temp. Rick claims that the antibiotics cause her to go into labor, but that is not true. Doctors say that antibiotics will not bring about premature labor. The baby became infected, bringing on labor; the baby was 19 weeks old. Unfortunately, he died shortly after being delivered. This is the dead fetus that they brought home to meet the kids, and then Rick and Karen slept with the dead baby between them before burying him.

It is OK for Rick and Karen to have prenatal testing and surgery. It is not OK for anyone else.

I felt anger listening to Santorum speak about prenatal testing. He is not ignorant so he is playing the card they will tell people to abort the fetus after prenatal testing. I am weary of extremists.

A friend raised by a far right parent explained to me the belief that birth control debate is that the government will force people to take birth control, leading to dictating how many children, who can have children...like China. Then our government will be socialist society.

I do not hear proposed mandates to force people to use contraception nor get pregnant then abort mor dictatorial stance. Nor did I hear Michelle Obama declare she is going to have s'mores and cookies banned by the government dictating.

The base is so extreme and these politicians feed their extreme thinking.

If you don't agree with it then DON'T do it.

  87. Well of course prenatal testing leads to more "abortions"... when the doctors see a dead fetus, or a fetus with two fucking heads or some kind of deformity that would result in a stillborn/miscarriage.
