In a sighting more rare than Bigfoot these days, Trig Palin makes an appearance. With new glasses to boot!

Apparently this was taken at the start of the Iron Dog. (You can see more on Palin's Facebook page.)

I think Trig looks happy, but I am a little surprised that supposedly new glasses fit so poorly.

Still I am not going to say anything negative at what appears to be a genuine moment between a father and his son.  (Yes I know what you are thinking, but despite how it all came to pass this IS their little boy.)

At least we can see that Trig is doing well and appears well cared for. And how long have we been wondering about that?

My first thought at seeing the picture was 'what a wonderful photo'. He has a good hold on his son and the whole cheek to cheek grins are lovely. They look happy. Good picture, thanks for sharing.

If he just got those glasses a day or so ago they weren't fitted very well at all. Most kids that age would be advised to wear croakies (eyeglass retainers) to keep them on and closer to the face.

I am glad to see him looking happy.

Um, I just returned from Walmart and had to purchase new reading glasses since I sat on mine earlier today. There were $12 and they are the SAME EXACT ONES that little Trig is wearing, I swear! Those are NOT glasses made for a child. Period. Sarah Palin, you are such a pathetic human being. Just take him to an eye doctor for cripes sakes.

The question is, which Tri-G is this? This one has much lighter brown hair (in the dead of winter) than the previous Tri-G in picture with Tripp ( the picture where Tripp had his boots on the wrong feet)

Well at least the Toad loves the kids got to give him that.
As Baldy b/c more masculine the Toad is looking more feminized?

It may not be the fit so much as squeezing against his dad's head.
    Glasses are easily displaced.

As McGinnis and others have indicated it appears Todd is the parent, regardless of whose genes the child has.
When have we ever seen Sarah hugging her less than perfect child like this?

I remember a couple of days ago she got a half Nelson around Willow's neck and about threw her to the ground. Adoring mom's always hug that way.

totally inappropriate glasses. Plastic would be a better choice as well as straps to hold them on his face.
    Fail.

  16. Anonymous4:28 PM

Those don't look like a child's pair of eyeglasses: the frame is too fragile and thin, and the whole affair is sliding down his nose.
My own children's glasses were much sturdier; less wide, to fit a narrower, child's face; and didn't move around easily.
I think a parent, not Willow, should have gone to get these specs with Trig. She must have plopped him into a seat at an optician at an Anchorage mall, and left him there while she went to scout out some friends in the food court. An hour later: voila! He's all set and ready to go. He can't make himself clear that this new toy, these glasses, don't fit and don't help him to see.

I must say that I agree that this is a genuine moment of love and affection between father and son, and Trig is a handsome little guy.

However, those are not appropriate glasses for a four year old. First of all they are way too big for his face, and obviously dont fit the bridge of his nose at all. The style is something a middle aged woman would wear.

My neice has been wearing glasses since she was an infant, and is the same age as Trig now. She only wears plastic frames , and my sister told me they do not recommend wire rims for kids under 8...they bend and break too easily. There are so many cute colorful frames for kids, there is no excuse for getting glasses that look like Walmart readers.

Don't know what to say about the glasses because they are kind of squished there as he leans against Todd.

In the facebook photo of Trig looking at Todd wearing a helmet, the picture is a side profile shot.

The glasses are way oversized and too big for him. Even if he raises them to avoid looking at the top rim, they will simply fall back down his nose. It's a big fail for an optometrist to not adjust the nosepads so you you can look THROUGH the glasses instead of over them, croakies or not. And wireframes?? WTF??

Zoom in on the glasses if you can. There is no light refraction. I don't think these glasses have any kind of prescription.

  62. I think Palin picked trendy frames for his glasses rater than practical ones for a child. I'll bet the optometrist shook his head when she picked them. I don't think it was the girls who picked them, as he would have pointed out how inappropriate they are for a child.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Those are not kids' glasses. They are metal, meaning they can be bent. A child wears sturdier plastic frames and an elastic strap to hold the glasses in place.

It's not that uncommon to see small children with glasses. These are all wrong. But she mentioned that he had glasses a couple of weeks ago- evidently forgetting that she'd already said he got them at eight months- and somebody remember that and stuffed a pair on him.

At least it's nice to see he's looking good. But I'm sure whatever professionals are taking care of him know their job.

Considering how self centered and cold a mother Sarah Palin must be, at least they have one adult in the house who gives them affection. Lot's of glass fitting experts on this site, but I wonder how many have ever had to fit glasses on a child with Down syndrome whose morphological features (low-set ears, flat bridge of the nose, etc) make it more difficult for a good fit with standard glasses and may require using less than ideal solutions (like glasses that are too large). As the parent of a special needs child, I am always bothered by the rush to criticize Sarah Palin for things that may legitimately not be within her control. It's hard enough to deal with the challenges inherent in these disorders without having to deal with the complete lack of experience and understanding of strangers, who nevertheless feel qualified to comment on what they perceive as failures in parenting.

There are probably about a hundred thousand legitimate reasons to criticize Sarah Palin. This is not one of them.

    Great photo.

Sarah, look at Todd. He is showing how a child should be held. Good for Todd.

You, Sarah, on the other hand, have always been awkward, ill-at-ease, and rather repulsed-looking when trying to hold Trig. Why couldn't you ever hold Trig like Todd is doing in this photo?

I hope Todd is the one spending quality time with Trig. That poor child needs and deserves it. If this photo is any indication, Trig will grow up feeling loved - by Todd at least.

Oh, and Gryphen you are a classy guy. Thanks for a good photo and a great post.

  69. Anonymous6:14 PM

Those glasses are not fitted for Trig's little eyes. The lens are not centered at his eye level. They don't allow him to see straight ahead, only to gaze his eyes downward, as if with reading glasses.

I'd have to say someone needed to post a photo of him quickly with glasses on and these don't belong to him.

In fact, most frames with prescriptions are sent away at a factory that cuts the lens to fit the frame and it takes at least a week before they're ready. Sarah just told her audience that Willow was picking them out just recently. Have they already arrived so soon?

    ReplyDelete

You have got to be kidding. If the glasses don't fit right, the kid can't fucking see out of them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I have a six yr old whom I am very often taking to the optician's office for adjustments because she bumps her glasses a lot. Thankfully they are close by.

I did a bit of googling, and it turns out that it can be difficult to fit glasses to people with Down Syndrome because of their flatter nose ridges.

Hopefully, someone in the Palin family will take him back frequently until the fit is right, but, from my experience, he'll have to go back frequently to tighten them up, get the bridge pieces replaced from time to time, and generally just make sure the eyes are seeing through the lenses properly.

But then Sarah probably knows all this already since she owns so many pairs of glasses.

They do, however, look too big for him, like they didn't get sized right from the get-go.

In my case, we try everything to ensure our daughter's glasses last as long as possible, plus we always have a pair of backup glasses in case there's an accident on a day the office is closed.

Sarah and Todd won't have to worry about money issues, though, they could order tens sets of glasses for him that are all properly fitted, and then just toss them or donate them when they get out of whack (no, seriously, she's loaded with money, and who better to spend the money on?)

I agree Trig looks very happy their with his Dad/Granddad.

I had a baby with eye problems who needed glasses from 6 months of age. It was always difficult to fit him correctly....even using kid frames..and they were generally plastic frames similar to the ones Trig is wearing. So....although I believe SP is the WGE and WME....I don't think anyone should read too much into Trig's glasses.

I was thinking the same thing, that Trig has been outfitted with an old castoff pair of Sarah's glasses. Most of her older ones had heavier black frames or half-frames, but this one you found looks very very close to what Trig's wearing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sarah_Palin_Kuwait_Crop2.jpg

Maybe they saved money by recycling the frames.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that on the Palin Wiki page, the featured picture has been updated to the hooker red satin blouse and weird bra picture from CPAC?

I remember his glasses from that video Palin spoke of Special Olympics -- the glasses were extremely thick -- like bottom of coke bottles.

The glasses he has on now - don't fit. The frame is so flimsy, the first fall he takes or drops -- they'll break as they are not children's glasses.

I call it bullshit that they're his. She once again stuck her foot in her mouth that he was getting new glasses and therefore had to take a pic of him wearing somebodies glasses -- not his -- just to prove it as if it was truthful which we know it's not.

I guess that all of the comments about "where are Trig's glasses?" finally got to the Palins. However, those thin frames are not suitable for children. My guess is that Trig does not have fine motor movements, and when he tries to put his glasses on and off, there is going to be trouble. There are suitable kids' glasses with thicker frames and a strap. Oh, those Palin photo op's. Where are Trig's hearing aides?

He is such a good father as seen by the four uneducated juvenile delinquents he has already raised.

Todd the pimp did such a wonderful with his other kids he now has at least 3 grandkids before his kids even got married.

Todd the peeping tom is so nurturing that his 18 year old junior not in high school is graduating a year earlier.

Todd the bully is such an inspiration that his oldest daughter who had a baby as an underage student in high school is now being compared by the town of Wasilla to a $100,000 statute of a vagina.

Some have said that is nice that professionals who are taking care of Trig know their Job. No Ophthalmologist would prescribe those glasses to a child that age. It is clear someone took him to Walmart (or some other medical establishment) and got him a pair of reading glasses or even worse, picked up a pair of reading glassed left around the house. Doesn’t make much difference, they won’t help him see and learn about his environment

    1) 3 year old Trig (whatever Bristol's boy's age is) who is mentally handicap and is a DS baby is wearing delicate wired frame glasses.

    2) This DS baby who can't even tie his own shoe laces or feed himself is wearing his brand new metal framed glasses that he is not used to on the tip of his nose without a tether or restraint to secure it on his head.

    3) I'm 50 years old and am constantly breaking or misplacing my plastic Dr Dean Edell Walmart reading glasses.

    SunnyVee,

I think you may be right about the "adopted" child story. I have been seeing this narrative in troll comments at the palin place for a couple of weeks now. The last time I saw it there, the troll even wrote that the child was adopted because the biological parents were unable to provide care for the child. On this thread is the first time I have seen the troll posted "adopted" story of Trig at Immoral Minority. Come to think of it, the adoption story started to show up about the time the Game Change trailers started getting aired. Coincidence???

It would be kind of funny if it turned out that the child's biological mother (Bristol) is really the one providing his care. Trig's adoptive mother does not seem to provide much care for him.

But if they do have to come out with the adoption story, how is Sarah gonna walk back all those lies she has told about his birth, that she told again and again onstage, and wrote in her books? Boy, has she ever told some whoppers! How will she manage to blame all this on someone else? Because we all know she will.

Steve Schmidt stated on 60 minutes that he was NOT part of the vetting process. He was tasked as an adviser to the entire McCain campaign including whomever was picked to be VP. It wasn't until Palin opened her mouth that he knew they were in trouble. He had to work with her and try to do his job which was to give political advice.

A reminder of how Sarah "cares" by dragging along a special needs child on her campaign is seen here on youtube where Anderson Cooper interviews Schmidt. The interview is 10 minutes long. At the 9:06 mark, Sarah disembarks off the bus and is more concerned with her adoring fans than Trig held by Sally Heath? or a babysitter.

    Examples:

They stopped mentioning Willow is graduating a year early after we made fun of her being almost 18 years old and still a junior in high school.

They finally put glasses they found around the house on Tri-g after we hounded them.

It looks like they got rid of Tripp's pacifier after we made fun of him sucking on it all day.

Bristol and Willow stopped their homophobic rants after we got on them about that.

Sarah started dressing better after we started ragging on her red bathrobe she wore on FOX.

Sarah responded and cleaned up after our comments about the garage sale mess and bondfire and electrical outlet showing in her studio as soon as we mentioned it and there are plenty more examples.

Trig's glasses are probably Specs4us frames. They're designed especially for Down Syndrome children.
I enlarged the picture and they look exactly like a pair that Specs4us has on their website.

    8:03 PM

I looked at their website. Trig's glasses do not match any of their products. Specs4us glasses are by design, patented with the temple piece hinged near the horizontal center line of the lens to better facilitate the glasses to ride higher on the nose bridge. Their frames are also wider by design with hinge pieces that arc further outward and lenses oriented closer together to better fit kids with down's.

    http://www.specs4us.com/purchases.html

    Here's their FAQ:
Children with Down syndrome have easily recognizable facial features, including very small noses, shortened depth from the eye socket to the ear and especially close set eyes with wide faces. As a result, “typical” glasses slide down constantly, fall forward and bow out at the temples.

Trig's glasses in the photo have temple pieces hinged near the top rim, are too wide for him, ill fitting and upon magnification
lack any kind or presciption grading. Too bad the pictures don't show how long the temple pieces are since they are covered by his hair or his hood.

Sarah said these are his "new" glasses. BS. She mentioned it to get cred and made sure he was pictured with a pair on his face.

Since Sarah reads this blog, you can bet the next time you see Trig he'll have a different pair on.

I won't respond to this picture in a favorable way because that is exactly what Palin wants and is the whole point of her posting the picture, It isn't for Trig, It is for Sarah and her never ending quest for relevance,

Santorum gets alot of attention with Bella. And so Palin pops up with a Newsweek article about Trig and now these pictures. Palin is a sick woman who plays sick media games, and I refuse to fall in her trap. I believe she is competing with Santorum. I fully expect her to start dissecting his conservatism as opposed to hers.

I might be interested in seeing pictures of Trig if it wasn't a media stunt. But it is what it is. If I sound cold, it may be true --in the sense that I will always be cold to a parent so blatently using a child to satisfy her ego and for monetary purposes. As for Todd, he's a kept man and goes along.

Having worked for an ophthalmologist (an eye specialist MD) years ago, I can say that we always recommended that small children use a strap to keep glasses on, not just DS kids. Glasses that are not sitting correctly on the face are simply not working for the patient.

That said, glad at least that Trig is getting some attention from someone. He does get attention from his real mother, too, from time to time--she has a photo of herself and her 2 sons on her FB page.

  145. Anonymous2:37 AM

I am always amazed at how subjective things like photos or stories can be. Everyone sees or hears the same thing and we all come up with a different interpretation. We only need to take a look at Sarah for real evidence of that: She talks, we cringe, and her fans go wild.

I have never really bought the idea that Tripp is the biological son of Bristol and Levi but in this photo, Trig looks like Levi to me. I know that there are many here who have posted that he looks like Todd - and I can buy that too. But, when I first looked at the photo I saw Levi. Regardless, it is a good photo. The photo must have been taken and posted by the "love" troll. You know, the one that keeps telling us how much love there is in the family like that's an exceptional thing for a family (or is it a reaction-formation?!).

There really is no good outcome to the Sarah-Trig story: Either she faked the pregnancy or she was wildly irresponsible (getting on a plane after he water broke).

    ReplyDelete
  146. Anonymous3:04 AM

    6:12 PM

Nice try. I have cared professionally for many DS children. They have plastic glasses with straps to hold them in place because of the dysmorphic DS facies.

The cynic in me says this photo opp was completely orchestrated. Sarah Palin even made sure that she would not be there with her 'visiting' departing troops in Indiana story.

I do think Todd has a real relationship with Trig for which I am thankful, Sarah not so much.

Those glasses do not look like appropriate glasses for such a young child. The frames look a bit too fragile for everyday wear and abuse that youngsters give glasses. He should also have the little stretchy thing running around behind his head to keep them in place. Whoever picked these glasses out did not know what they were doing.
Also wondered about this child. In some earlier photos I recall the tongue protruding much more.

TriG had the correct glasses in the special needs video SP presented us with when he was allegedly one year old.

Why did he go so many years without wearing them? Why doesn't he have the same thing now? They were fitted to his face, looked really cute and had a band to keep them on his head.

My name is not Brooklyn, it's Michele Manion. I run a nonprofit for disabled children, like my daughter (you can Google me if you are interested). I'm also a progressive activist and have been for more than 30 years. I'm willing to put a name to my post that simply points out how petty and ridiculous this string of commentary is. I'd appreciate if you would do the same, rather than hiding behind your anonymity while taking potshots at others who actually agree with you politically but feel you are out of line on this issue. I have no love for Sarah Palin or for her political views on raising a disabled child, as evidenced by my post published in the Atlantic (http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2010/07/why-does-trig-matter-ctd-2.html), so I really must object to your baseless attempts to diminish my point by falsely accusing me of trolling.

I'll come right out and say it. It is ugly behavior and beneath those who have true problems with Palin to pick on such petty issues related to topics YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. It's possible that she is engaging in lousy parenting. We know she is certainly capable of that. But it is equally possible that there are issues related to Trig's disability that could be contributing and by minimizing what this family has to contend with daily, you diminish yourselves, not them.

I will always advocate for disabled children and it does not matter to me one iota who their parents are. When uninformed people make thoughtless comments that demonstrate their complete lack of understanding/sympathy for the challenges of the disabled, I will come out swinging. That's my job. I care more about this issue than I do about political posturing and believe it is entirely and profoundly wrong to politicize the needs of the chronically ill and disabled--especially if the only real goal, as appears to be the case here, is to assert some falsely presumed sense of moral superiority.

Sarah Palin the politician is a problem for us all. Trig's glasses are not.

Gryphen, the glasses appear to fit him poorly because they are not likely to be his glasses.

This child is what? 3-4 years old? What parent and optometrist puts a child in thin, metal framed glasses?

Children are either fitted in flexible poly, almost rubber like glasses, or in break resistant plastic frames.

This is nuts. There must be a lot of dangerous scuttlebutt about care of Trig in the media recently to make these hillbillies sit up & take enough notice to give a shit and scrounge up a pair of (inappropriate)frames for a photo op.

    They are so incredibly stupid.

I'm glad you posted the link to that video -- it's a great accompaniment to the trailers and previews of HBO's "Game Change" (I've put it into a Tweet)...

...but the portion of the video you pointed to above is actually during Palin's jet/bus book tour in Nov-Dec. 2009. As you can see in that part of the video, she looks frumpy and disheveled, something her handlers never let happen during the 2008 campaign.

I haven't read all the comments, just enough to see lots of concern that Trig's new glasses are of an inappropriate style/size for him.

It is possible that this is just round 1. If he has not been accustomed to wearing glasses, it would likely be easier to get him used to a lightweight pair. Once he becomes used to wearing glasses and recognizes the value of improved vision, then he could be 'progressed' to a sturdier pair more appropriate for the rough and tumble life of a little guy.

Or, this is a temporary pair immediately available from the optician while a custom age appropriate pair is being manufactured just for him.

Or, Willow could have just made a very poor decision to go for the cute Harry Potter look. Time will tell.

Great analysis on the glasses. Comparing the frames shown on the Specs4Us website (especially those shown on the About Us page on little Marina) to those shown on Trig reveals that the hinges for the "arms" and the bridge are all placed incorrectly for his needs.
More from the website mission: "They will be able to explore the world freely and clearly without wearing glasses that are too big or are constantly slipping down their nose." Both of those things are obviously happening in the Trig photo.

    Hi Michelle,

I see your point, but it's the circumstantial chronology of the events that makes the posting of these pictures part of what Sarah Palin has chosen to make public and political. And thus discussable.

We see photos without glasses. for years - photos primarily posted as personal political propaganda by Sarah and crew.

IM posters notice it (lack of glasses) and post about it. Suddenly, Palin brings up the glasses topic on a TV show she chose to appear on, and then a mere day or two later, these photos appear.

Trig, in general, is discussed only because Sarah chose to make him part of her "Look at me, I'm a heroine" narrative. Problem is, there are two narratives that contradict each other: Caring mom of disabled child versus tough Alaskan wild ride taker.

Is this relevant for the voting public to consider - yes. Taken at face value it shows a recklessness and lack of judgment that would be disastrous in someone holding political office. If it's a fabrication - not on a "did she birth the kid" or not level, but on an "is she lying about being in labor" level. Since she is the one who has promoted it and repeated it many times, it clearly shows a person willing to USE her disabled child to further her own false narrative- that's despicable.

She's clearly still doing it! Supposedly she is "busy" in Alaska - with her family. Supposedly she is "just like us." Yet here she is on a whirlwind week of national shows, her souse is at the IronDog, on a schedule that's been known for months, but she lets an 18 y o take her disabled child for something as important as eyeglasses? Does not add up. Heck, my kid isn't disabled and I wouldn't not be there for an eyeglass fitting unless there was a medical emergency on my part. And then, likely I'd cancel the appointment until I or my spouse could be.

Her actions contradict the caring mom narrative. Her actions contradict the "family keeps me from running" narrative. She's a liar - not in the political field, but about her family. If she'll use her family in this way - what will she do if she ever gets in office?

So that's why pointing out those contradictions are fair game. It isn't critics who have put Trig front and center - Sarah Palin has.

I hope you will use your position to communicate your displeasure to her and her entourage and fans, too. That is where it would be properly directed.

Looking at his glasses, I wonder how it is possibly the correct prescription (if it is one at all...!) - compare these with the bottle-glass type he once wore when $he played 'patty-cake' (wayyyy too early for his supposed age IMHO) with him.
Either that, or he had corrective eye surgery, which I very much doubt at this early age.

    @6:43 PM

President Obama’s photo-ops with adoring crowds are not staged. According to polling, people actually like the man. It’s the opposite with $arah Palin. Crowds aside, I’ve seen pictures of President Obama with his own children. The president, and his children seem to have a genuine love for each other, as well. And, the president doesn’t need to exploit them, or use photo-ops to prove it.

It's not real. They never are. It's staged. Most of the released photographs don't even have the correct years.

Willow is not yet 18 - why would a minor take a toddler to an eyeglass appt? It's unusual for anyone other than the mother or a parent to do so.

I have a child with Down syndrome who wears glasses ... I can assure you, the way Trig's glasses slide down the end of his nose is par for the course.
Because of the shape of the nose and position of the ears they tend to slide down to the tip of the nose. Particularly if you have heavy lenses from bad nearsightedness. In my son, we partially corrected this by getting cable temples (the flexible wire ones that actually loop behind the ears).
There is a website for specialized frames for kids with Down syndrome, designed by a optician with a DS child. I forget the name of the site, but it shows the difficulty with fitting these kids in a number of ways. One other difference with these frames is the bridge between the lenses is set MUCH lower than in regular specs ... almost like the glasses are being worn upside down. These fit my son much better, but because of his heavy lenses he still slipped.
Maybe someone should let Sarah know they have special frames? Hell, the optician might even let her have a free pair for publicity.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Careful... it's really riding the line to make comparisons to this picture of Trig and older ones (it's sad that there are so few, because I am suspicious that there was a stand-in at one point or another). Kids around that age can change *drastically* in their appearance. I visited my sister once to see my nephew when he was 2.5 or so (?) and she sent me pictures of him 7 months later--- I was shocked because I didn't recognize my own nephew. Kids look different with more hair, more/less weight, longer faces, and teeth :(
And I think Sarah is using that to her advantage. Maybe that's why no one saw him for months at a time.
One thing that I thought was odd... just how badly does Trig need those glasses? (I honestly don't remember) Because usually with more severe prescription glasses, looking through the lens to the person distorts them a bit. When you look at Trig in the picture, the contour of his face doesn't alter at all. His eyes don't seem any bigger. Is this a very weak prescription? Does anyone know?
