Was Sarah Palin pro-choice before she was pro-life?

"Oh dammit! I forgot about that one!"
A very alert reader sent me this interesting link from the recent e-mail dump.

In it they found this rather surprising e-mail from Frank Bailey.

From: frank bailey [ftb907@yahoo.com]
Sent: Monday, May 12, 2008 10:06 PM
To: Leighow; Sharon W (GOV)
Cc: Hughes; Rosanne D (GOV); Sarah Palin; kris Perry
Subject: pro-choice website

Sharon,

I looked and they finally pulled the Gov's picture off of www.alaskaprochoice.org website.
Nice job staying on that one. Thank you.

What, you may be asking yourself? Sarah Palin, queen of anti-abortion protestors, had her picture up on a PRO-CHOICE website.

Yep she sure did.

This picture was featured on the Alliance for Reproductive Justice, right up until Palin's assistant Sharon Leighow demanded they take it down before the folks trying to shoehorn her onto the McCain presidential ticket caught wind of it. Which apparently they never did.

Until now of course.

Here is just a portion of the group's Mission Statement.

The Alliance for Reproductive Justice is a statewide coalition of organizations working together to protect and promote reproductive rights and services through education, advocacy and referrals.

The Alliance for Reproductive Justice promotes policies and practices that protect women's access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care through education and grassroots organizing strategies. We seek to empower women, girls and men to improve reproductive health care services, including abortion care, and related policies in Alaska. We achieve this by coordinating actions and facilitating cooperation among Alaskan organizations committed to choice.

Under the heading "What Else We Do?" they have this at the top:

Advocate for access to abortion services and high quality reproductive health care for Alaskan women.

Wow! That certainly would not have gone over very well with the Religious Right now would it? Can you just imagine how much damage this would have done to the McCain campaign if it had come out in 2008?

Now go ahead and tell me again that Palin had NO idea that McCain was going to pick her!

No wonder Palin fought so hard to keep these e-mails out of the hands of bloggers and journalists!

By the way, you can still see Palin's picture over at the ARJ website courtesy of the wayback machine, by clicking here.

Oh that Sarah, she just loves her photo ops even if it is for pro-choice.

Sarah would go all the way to Russia to get a picture with the Queen of England.

Remember when she appointed Morgan Christen to the Alaska Supreme court?

    Woot, you go, girl!

Then, Obama nominated Christen to 9th Circuit! Hey, hey, hey!

  9. I was curious about this photo (particularly as it had a different caption), so I did a litle research. The 2007 Women's Summit in Colorado was entitled 10 years of Success Celebrating Women and Business, and it appears to be just that. In their brochure, their stated purpose, list of sponsors and so forth seems to be strictly career and business.

I don't see any connection or reference to the Alliance for Reproductive Justice anywhere. I'm not sure why the photo was on the ARJ website, but I doubt if Palin was ever involved with them. It's actually a very progressive women's website, and I was impressed with the list of participants...not Palin's crowd for sure.

You're making too much of this. I've attended the Women's Summit before. Yes, it is put together by ARJ, but each year the topics of focus vary although they are always centered around what is in the best interest of women and children. Attendees come from all interests in women's issues, not just reproductive rights. We were introduced to the legislature as the Women's Summit and the year I was there we visited the Governor's office, but Parnell was out of town. I do not believe Palin has ever been pro choice, a this was merely a photo with constituents from every part of the state visiting Juneau to promote issues important and relevant to women.

I thought we had concluded that:
-- Palin met McCain in Jan? Feb? 2008 for a handshake and a brief chat
-- the "pundints" cruised on over to AK and SP entertained them, impressed them (in Feb? as described in The New Yorker article)
-- that insanely pro-Palin blogger kept promoting her as a VP candidate.
--Did Vogue really pick her themselves? Or might they have had a little suggestion?
    -- etc.

Surely people talked to one another during this time. Surely they said everything was off the record and speculative. Which it might have been, until the decision to go with Palin was made, shortly before the convention. But I bet it didn't go exactly like in Steve Schmidt says. I bet Palin knew she had an outsider's chance and she was not going to blow it with whatever family misfortune was happening. So she was prepared. As we know, as soon as McCain was picked as the candidate, SP announced she was pregnant. And stripped web sites, or tried to, of anything that no longer fit her "brand." Just getting her ducks in order. Perhaps conferring behind the scenes with whomsoever might have been promoting her. Schmidt might have been on the internet before SP was picked, and he might have done some searches on her, but can anyone think there were not Palin supporters whispering in his ear: the "pundints" who liked her so much, Paxton, maybe even dear Rupert his own self.

  55. O/T but I just had to share my adventure!

With the release of Baldy's emails I haven't had a chance to see how the patients at the Asylum were doing...but tonight I took a ride on the "information Super Highway" and got off at the "Crazies4Palin" exit!

Once I arrived I had to get past a couple of security checkpoints (they have really gotten paranoid over there...Gee, I wonder why!).

I was surprised to see that a lot of the patients have adjourned to their respective rubber rooms and the few patients milling around in the dayroom seemed to be...um...a bit ANGRY!

So I listened behind a cart loaded with pastries and heard some crazy guy by the name of "Technopeasant" tell his fellow patients the reason why this country is being taken over by the "Left" is due to (hang on here...this is a direct quote and my IPod recorder almost stop working due to the foolishness that it was hearing...but I digress)...

"the Left has taken a phrase out of the Declaration of Independence, the pursuit of happiness, and perverted it to mean or connote the right to unlimited casual sex, the right to unrestrained sexual freedom, the right to absolute personal autonomy, or the right to become a hedonist or Narcissist without hindrance or prosecution"

And then the crazy guy with the wild hair and eyes and with spittle coming out of his mouth...proceeded to list 10(yes 10) reasons why.....most of the reasons were anti-women, anti-education, and of course anti-homosexuals!

Pretty much the Repub platform. He did get a few women pushing back on his comments...including a holy roller who quoted him bible passages about women being equal to men...but ole "Techno" was in the zone...so he didn't hear nothing of what she said!

Anyway...I skipped out of that dayroom and headed over to one that had only a few patients milling about...they were talking about "Game Change"...it included the crazy teacher who must have checked herself in for some more indoctrination of Baldy....Adrienne Ross!

The were still in their robes so maybe they just woke up because they were talking about an interview that McShame did and they were happy that he finally defended Baldy...Adrienne had this to say to the group...

Adrienne Ross Yesterday 09:23 PM in reply to ramorywebb
I am glad he spoke well of Gov. Palin and discussed how vilely she has been treated. He has said that before, of course. I would like to hear him specifically call out those staffers who contributed to the "Game Change" lie.

Anyway that was enough for me...I usually don't like hanging around that place for too long...plus my visitor's pass was only good for 15 minutes and I was down to 14:55 seconds!

Luckily I left when I did...because it looked like Nurse Ratchet(RAM) was coming around with everyone's next dose of medication and I certainly didn't want to get infected...um...I mean...injected!

I think the next time I head over there is when "Game Change" comes out! Because you know those fools will insist that the hospital stream it live so they can watch Julianne Moore as Baldy and relive their favorite moments of Baldy's DESTRUCTION!

"Liberal advocates on women's health issues have been more vocal. They say Palin raised expectations in 2007, when she attended a summit organized by The Alliance for Reproductive Justice, a group affiliated with Planned Parenthood. According to one attendee quoted on the Planned Parenthood Web site, "we had not planned on meeting Gov. Palin, so that was a surprise. She took the time to talk with us about her own experiences as a working mother, and relayed her support for women's health."

But early hopes have been dashed by a lack of follow-through, these activists say; Palin has taken a laissez-faire approach to the issues they discussed, including children's health care, domestic violence shelters, sex education and breastfeeding in the workplace."

Piper talking to Ivy Frye about 30 being old and she should have babies. I’m guessing Sarah never talked to her daughters that females usually wait till after they are married or establish their careers first before starting a family. They just don’t elope in the middle of the night and pop out a baby 8 months later like mom did or take high school correspondence courses through the mail because delivering a baby in 5thh period would be disruptive. Well females at least wait until they graduate high school first before they start becoming a baby factory like Sarah‘s daughters.

27 year old Ivy tells Piper she is picky on who she dates? I wonder if Piper is picky about who gets her underage high school sisters pregnant?

Anyway, I don’t remember being that young like Piper and talking to an adult like that, why is she into grown folks business like the time Piper wanted her mom to pull on an employees hair?

For those who have said Sarah got a tip-off back in February 2008 that she would be McCain's nominee... I disagree. Sort of.

I do know from reading up on A.B. Culvahouse that Sarah Palin was on a list of 25-30 potential VP noms as early as February. BUT, she was at the bottom of that list, the longest of longshots. That's why they did almost no background work on her before August.

However, remember that Sarah Palin is a naive, narcissistic idiot. When she got the initial call from Culvahouse's law firm in Feb asking her to answer preliminary questions about being on a potential VP pick list, I'll just bet she thought she was a "finalist." So, she did all that cleaning up of her past, faked that pregnancy to cover over some sort of family dirt, etc.

Meanwhile, the McCain campaign had no intention whatsoever of selecting her, until they got desperate and made a few mistakes. Then they had to pick her in August. She was ready, because she had thought it would be her all along. So, I guess Sarah was right that time... for once. Heck... Even a stopped, batshit clock is right twice a day.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anonymous6:51 PM

I do worry that her followers are going to be getting more desperate as more and more comes out about their Quitter Queen. Checking the Pee'ers, I see Dr. Leroy Shitslinger is back. He is one crazy guy:

    ...
"We are on a collision course with DISASTER and I am beginning to wonder if even Sarah could make ANY SENSE of the disaster that awaits us.

We are getting closer to the NEXT American Revolution. The change from..."anybody but" ...to... "by any means necessary"...is getting CLOSER by the day!

I cannot IMAGINE the DANGER that Sarah would be in IF she were to climb back into the toilet bowl of (a)merican politics."

    "By any means necessary"

This is the kind of lunatic that should be watched.

Sarah Palin actually posed for this photo? There's no way to spin this one. If she's a woman who stands on priciple, she'd SURELY have found SOME excuse to A)Not be there or B)pose for the photo on a website that promotes sex education, reproductive rights, women's rights, and sponsored by Planned Parenthood.

Then having a daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock, become the poster child for abstinance!?!?!?!?!

    Does Not Compute.

To quote our Vice President, Joe O'Biden - "This is a big FUCKING deal!"

Mother Jones, Huffpo, Larry O'Donald, The View, Wonkette, ABC, NBC, CBS, not sure of Rachael, but it's worth a try, perhaps Mellissa Harris Perry, and maybe Chris Matthews are most definately getting a link to this post.

Thanks, Gryphen and IM'ers for finding this gem. Sarah's got some 'splaining to do. Can't wait for the Fox News (ha ha ha) "Spin".

Palin knew from (at least) summer of 2007 that she was under serious consideration as McCain (or Romney's) running mate to shore up "the base."

She knew from the moment she was "vetted" by the Neo-Cons -- Bill Kristol, Dick Morris, and all the rest from the Weekly Standard and the National Review. They came on cruise ships to Alaska and all met, extensively, with Sarah.

Dick Morris took her aside for a very long private chat and, it is reported, told Palin to play up the "mavericky" angle when she campaigned. Heaven only knows what else they discussed...

Maybe this was a sort of "Annunciation Scene": "Sarah -- GOD and GOP want you to be a Special Mom to a Special Child..."

Please read "The Insiders: How McCain chose Palin" by Jane Mayer in the New Yorker Oct. 2008. It is easily found online.

About what Sarah knew and when she knew it re V.P. slot:

The wingnut cruise to Alaska is a critical data point.

Another is the extreme dissatisfaction the religious right had with G.W. Bush. They thought he was one of them when they helped elect him, but Dubya did not pass the laws and push the culture wars topics like they wanted him to. They felt deceived by his lack of action. They have felt taken advantage of by the Republican party since the 1970's. They turned out the vote, and elected Nixon twice, Reagan twice and Bushes three times. Yet there was no theocracy, abortion and birth control had not banned, and happy people were having sex everywhere.

These folks were ready to pressure the Republican party. Either they would get their choice of V.P. or they'd tell their followers to stay home on election day. Nominating someone like John McCain (can you imagine him finishing a first term much less running for a second term?) made the v.p. slot that much more a ticket to 2012.

Look at all the Republican participants in the 2008 race. Only Mike Huckabee and Alan Keyes would not have needed an evangelical to make the religious right happy.

I am quite certain that Sarah was told that there would be an all out effort to have a evangelical v.p. nominee for the Republican ticket in 2008. She was on a short list here, and she was told this. Hello Franklin Graham and Lowell 'bud' Paxson. Not to mention all the "liberal media" pendants like Kristol and so on.

Early in 2007 it was obvious that the Democratic nominee would be either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. A female evangelical Republican veep nominee would counteract Hillary Clinton in their eyes, and at the same time would offset the history making candidacy of Barack Obama should that happen.

Sarah didn't have to figure this out for herself, there were plenty of helpers to tell her this. Not to mention state supported media consultants from the lower 48 where the elites live.

The ploy of calling all criticism or vetting 'religious discrimination' or 'sexism' would have been planned for, to deflect from the issues. Sarah did that just as planned. No discernable record of achievement is a plus in this case in the eyes of the Republican Party insiders. Not so much if you don't want a paranoid idiot a heartbeat from the red button. After all, what would she do when some country she has never heard of rears their heads someplace she can't even locate on a map.

Much of this was already under way before she was elected Governor in 2006. In her circles it had been talked about for years. Was she paying attention?

Cindy McCain, Laura Bush, and Betty Ford have all stated they are pro-choice. The voters were fed up with George W. Bush and no GOP candidate was going to get elected after W's 8 years.

There's tons of great stuff. Here's one from Mrs."Why Won't the Press Leave Me and My Baby Alone??!!!":

    From: gov.sarah@yahoo.com [mailto:~ov.sarah~vahoo.com]
    Sent: Monday, April 21, 2008 12:11 PM
    To: Leschper, Beth (GOV)
    Subject: Baby

"Beth- would you go ahead and let those folks know that I had the baby, so that they’re not waiting four or five more weeks and then
beginning to ask if I’ve had it yet! :)

Our friends at Newsweek, the Vogue folks, Elan, some of those other folks we met on our travels. Thanks!

And he’s doing great- very, very sweet and beautiful. I’m bringing Trig in with me to the AGIA update - I’ll get to hear more of their AGIA messaging plan this afternoon also. Thanks."

In one of her emails, she says she doesn't read blogs. Really?

    From: gov.palin@yahoo.com
    Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2008 11:11:17
    To: Frank Bailey; K Perry Yahoo; Sharon Leighow;
    Rosanne Hughes

    Subject: Blog

"Can someone flag the lie in the blog 'sexy highway talk among governors' that claims Trig was in the fender bender with me- and he wasn’t in a car seat on my commute. Sheeeesh.

I WISH ADN would follow up on that one (as the blogger asks ADN to do) so that I can put that minor to rest... Rumor is Walt reported me so I fired him. What an idiot blog entry, very easy to counter with the truth when half a dozen APD cops responded and witnessed no Trig in vehicle,"

The ever faithful Frank Bailey replies:

"Definitely. I’ll get some flags in on it."

There is a hilarious string of emails between her and her posse when John Ziegler released a clip from his interview for his DVD "Media Malpractice" to YouTube. In the clip she suggests that because of class, the press will cover Caroline Kennedy's campaign differently than they covered hers. Politico and others wrote a story about it, and the Palinistas run around panicking with their hair on fire until her press guy, Bill McAllister, finally looks at the release she signed and sees that she gave Ziegler permission to do whatever he wanted. (Too bad Bill had already ripped Ziegler a new one.) Her response:

    Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2009 12:20:29 -0900
    From: govpalin@alaska.gov
Subject: Re: Governor Palin Interview 1/5/09
    To: bill. mcallister@alaska.gov

"If I signed something permitting them to release snippets and I wasn’t paying attention then I’m the biggest idiot in the world and no one else is to blame re what out of context crap comes out of this. Crap."

    pra-gsp02-0027700

See? That's what we've been saying! You ARE the biggest idiot in the world.

The kicker is that AFTER all this, Meg Stapleton says,

"We need to make sure to watch the actual clip. The liberals may be taking the interview out of context rather than the doc people."

    pra-gsp02-0027705

Kind of like bitching about "Game Change" without seeing it.

  85. OT, but have any of you all ever seen this list i found on page 68 in the comments at the video of $arah saying Alaska was excited about Mr. Obama:

Books Sarah Palin tried to have banned as mayor:

    The Witches by Roald Dahl
The Witches of Worm by Zilpha Snyder
Then Again, Maybe I Won't by Judy Blume
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
    Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary by the Merriam-Webster Editorial Staff
Witches, Pumpkins, and Grinning Ghosts: The Story of the Halloween Symbols by Edna Barth

Sarah Palin does not believe in evoultion and yes this is the year 2008.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO6dmBm1SFw

Mr. Kudlow also asked her about a probe into one of her [early] scandals, and he also asked her if she was interested in becoming John McCain's running mate.

    Her answer:
"But as for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does everyday?"

my theory - I don't think Sarah is pro choice (or pro life) - she is what she needs to be for the group she is front of to get their money or their votes From comments she went to this uninvited - got free stuff (another perk she likes) and got to pretend she supported the agenda in order to get the attendees support in return

However, it is still damaging because it shows her lack of true belief in being pro life and that she is not sincere, confirms what we all know - she lies and cons

Anon@6:51- "We are getting closer to the NEXT American Revolution. The change from..."anybody but" ...to... "by any means necessary"...is getting CLOSER by the day!" This has been a given since day one - 2008 election(and prior).

The threats, encouraging violence, propaganda re: "not one of us", "Sambo", commie, socialist, Kenyan, etc. - anything to dehumanize and degrade President Obama, inciting fear of a "takeover". All of this to make it easier to enable some nutjob the justification to "second amendment" the President.

I predict as it becomes clear that the buffoons on the GOP ticket will not win against President Obama, this "kill" rhetoric will increase in hopes that this goal will be realized. Whatever website/s or organization/s are allowing this kind or comment for public viewing should be shut down immediately - this is not free speech - it's a call for murder of out President!

Sarah Palin - if this is your support group - you need to tell them forthwith to STFU or be held liable for encouraging murder! MSM why isn't this being highlighted and tied to Sarah Palin's supporters as it should be? America needs to know THIS is the face of Palin politics!

    Hi Gryph,

Just got this email From Rep. Les Gara (who is awesome) and thought you and other AK readers would be interested. (small section of the e-mail)

    --------------------------
There are two controversial bills that I want to share some information on.

First, on HJR 16 the House Finance Committee will take public testimony on a proposed constitutional amendment to use state money to pay for private schools.

I believe we should work towards a strong public school system, and that private vouchers will cause legislators to withdraw their support for our public school system – exacerbating academic underachievement.

Public testimony is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 from 4:00 – 9:00 pm.

If you’d like to testify you can go to your Legislative Information Office (716 W 4th Ave in Anchorage), or contact Rose or Toby in my office if you are unable to go to the LIO.

Sometimes we can make special arrangements for people to call in from another location.

And there is a bill to REQUIRE WOMEN TO SEEK AN ULTRASOUND (even if they have already had one earlier in their pregnancy) that they would be asked whether they wanted to view if they sought a LEGAL FIRST TRIMESTER ABORTION.

In some cases this may be an unnecessary second ultrasound, and it seems to inject unnecessary expense and controversy into a woman’s personal choice.

There is no evidence that the Bipartisan Senate will let that bill advance, as they’ve tried to drive the middle of the road, and not focus the energy of the Legislature on divisive abortion issues in a session when we should be focusing on energy and education.

OK, now the big thing. WE NEED YOUR HELP (and e-mails and testimony).....

    ---------------------------

Come on everyone, call, write and voice your opinions..
