While Julianne Moore fairly embodies Sarah Palin in the HBO film Game Change, it appears that there are important family dynamics left out of the movie.

Here is a portion of an interview with Melissa Farman, who plays Bristol in the HBO movie Game Change, courtesy of Black Book:

BB: It’s nearly impossible to not know the story of Game Change already, but had you read the book before you started shooting? I did!

Melissa Farman: I’m actually a senior at University of Southern California where I’m a double-major in political science and English lit. I was actually reading the book for class a few months before I auditioned. So it’s funny, having studied the book and kind of seeing the script come to life just a few months later.

BB: It’s interesting that it’s focusing primarily on the McCain/Palin campaign, which I think is the more juicy part of the story. Was it kind of a challenge to portray someone is who still alive and still making news? Were you hesitant about that?

MF: I think it’s daunting. You have a responsibility toward that person that is very much alive, not only just alive but alive in the media. There’s definitely going to be a lot more scrutiny, and there’s a sense of wanting not to just mimic the person and wanting to be free to create a character. At the same time, having that responsibility is what makes it all the more exciting. It’s also helpful to have someone who’s so much in the public’s conscience right now, in the sense that there was so much media around Bristol. The film focalizes on the campaign trail and how all of a sudden she was thrown into the limelight. I could really watch so much footage of her really getting used to the camera and kind of developing her personality once she was on the public stage. There was a lot of material for me to study, which was great.

BB: I saw the Palin people have already attacked the film.

MF: My cousin just sent me a YouTube video where some Palin supporter re-cut the trailer to show that the film was full of lies. There’s concern for sure, but, you know, if a movie’s being made about you, you’re going to wonder if it’s going to be what you want it to be. I think the film is a very balanced portrayal of Sarah Palin. In politics there’s always bound to be controversy, but I think this is storytelling, and it shows the behind-the-scenes of a campaign -- both positive and negative. I think the film really empathizes on a personal level with Sarah Palin the woman. I think that’s something that maybe the Sarah Palin team is scared is not going to happen, but it does.

BB: Has Bristol said anything?

MF: No, she has not come out with anything publicly. I know Megan McCain has, but Bristol hasn’t.

This young woman has a DOUBLE major in Political Science, and she was asked to portray Bristol "I wanna be a reality star" Palin? And here I thought that Julianne Moore had the hardest acting job in the film!

Of course it really could have been even more challenging if HBO had truly understood the relationship between Sarah and Bristol.

While I certainly understand the reticence to appear to be attacking, or being too intrusive while depicting, the Palin children, I am also a little disappointed that it does not appear that HBO really understood the complex dynamic that was taking place within the Palin family.

They seem to have whitewashed Palin's relationship with Track almost completely, and failed to recognize how bizarre Sarah's codependency with Bristol was, and how that helped dictate her all encompassing desire to create a more palatable family mythology that would garner her support among the Fundamentalists, the military families, and women.

While I understand that the pregnancy will (briefly) be addressed in the movie it is abundantly clear that HBO chose not to depict, or failed to recognize, how the new born Down syndrome child and the teenage daughter's pregnancy were connected.

Of course if they had, I imagine that they would probably have had a MUCH harder time getting this movie made, and I can only imagine how much MORE intense the backlash would have been from the Palin supporters.

Though speaking for myself that is a movie that I personally would be much more interested in watching. Maybe someday.

    1. So last night I thought I take a jaunt over to the Asylum AKA "Crazies4Palin" on the eve of "Game Change" to see how the patients were doing.

All I can say is...luckily they've all been "committed" because by the tone of some of the comments...I believe a few sound suicidal! This trip I was hoping to take some backup....but at the last minute I figured I better go alone :)

Before arriving at the Asylum I notice that a few of the patients had been hanging at IM's and since I didn't want to blow my cover I had to get a disguise! So I donned my Baldy Palin lookalike ratty wig, slapped on some shiny lip gloss...dead fly on lip included...put on my red furry bathrobe....added the biggest cross you ever seen...dug out a pair of horned rim glasses and slipped into one of the dayroom's called..."The Undefeated" Television Premiere This Sunday".

Apparently BaldyPac had made an announcement over the PA system and told the patients that the only thing available to watch on TV in the dayroom for the next couple of days was continous showings of "The Undefeated"!
Which didn't seem to bother the few folks who were standing around...because they were mad at some guy named "Medved" who according to a creepy grizzly beard guy named "William Legge" had this to say...

William Legge Yesterday 09:36 PM in reply to navak

Medved and his wife went right along with those of the McCain campaign, Shmitty and Wallace and threw Governor Palin under the bus. Medved even said she was a hindrance to McCain winning, did not give her any cred and at one point made her out to be money hungry. He is a Romney guy and an elitist snob for sure. He does say some good stuff though only not about the best of the best Gov. Palin,

Of course...the other patients chimed in with their...um...thoughts....including this fella who spoke in capital letters and was digging out a wedgie and picking his nose while talking!

      Jthom26837 Yesterday 04:31 PM

Michael Medved, What A Joke. He Doesn't Think She's Good For The Job.

I guess I wasn't able to hide my horrified look at "grizzly beard nose picker" because everyone turned to look at me standing by the checkerboard (uh no chess board for this group...that's elist ya' know!) table...so I took off and headed to another dayroom called "Governor Palin Dismisses Game Change In An E-Mail to Jake Tapper"!

Its good to see Sarah Palin and most of America is on the offense. Ob and his cronies haven't seen anything yet. They should be ashamed of themselves. What do they want ? Is that what fame does to you ?
Sarah Palin is the most powerful woman on the planet, she has more fame than most, and remains honest, humble, and sincere. Sarah lives in the literal world, she is one of us.
I'm happy to stand with Sarah Palin and the silent majority. Time is with us .. The cream always comes to the top. Patients is a virtue .. We have it .. In due time OB will be shown the door, sanity will again rule the day .. You Betcha ..

OMG....I felt this hysterical laugh trying to come out...so I bent over clutching my stomach acting like I had a cramp...but because of the pressure and the danish I had from the other room...a little baby fart slipped out!

YIKES....and on that note...I took off! I did look over my shoulder and the last thing I heard was from...how best to describe her...um...she looked like Gladys Kravitz of Bewitched...the OLD Gladys....not that new one they had....anywho...she had this to say...

conservativemama Yesterday 09:10 PM in reply to DocBarry1

They want Sarah to disappear from the national scene. She's an inconvenient woman.

And upon hearing that...my cover was completely BLOWN! Because I ended up BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA down the corridor throwing off the wig in the process because it kept slipping off to the side of my head... till I made it the Exit!

WHEW....the fresh air of IM's comments have never smelled so good ya'll! I'm not sure I'll be going back until after "Game Change" plays! Today is not going to be a good day for the patients! LOL!

      HAPPY GAME CHANGE DAY EVERYBODY!!!

    Hey Gryphen...interesting question for you:

Last night I heard on the news (ABC evening news) that Sarah had been asked about the movie and she said she had no interest in watching it.

What caught my attention, however, was that she was quoted as saying something about getting a phone call from her son in Afghanistan, which she said was much more important than talking about the movie.

Huh??? I thought Track was out of the military...

It's obviously at his request. Track is a private person. Willow is as well. Notice how she rarely speaks publicly of her, only referencing her when asked hows the family doing. We all knew Bristol was Sarah's twin, physically and personality. Typically teen girl try to break away from their parents to gain independence. Bristol's alway seemed to seek out her mother's advice, guidance, and way, despite dating someone her mother hates. On that, it's quite the paradox. Parents despise daughter's choice of boyfriend. Daughter tries to convince them he's her soulmate. Boyfriends later says all daughter talked about was her parents.

I see typical teenhood that ended how one would expect it to. Family is happy, daughter has what she wants. Boyfriend is ousted. Sounds like my youth pastor's daughter, who gleefully got pregnant her senior year, and dumped the father when her daughter was about 8 months old. Actually the situations are identical. 5 kids in each family. In my pastor's case, her last two kids were conceived AFTER a tubal AND vasectomy. Not that Sarah or Todd underwent those.

To date the kids' ages are 30, 29, 26, 20, 15. The oldest isn't married. The 2nd is married with 3 kids, ages 10, 7, 3. The 3rd is the girl I was talking about, now is married with 2 kids. The 4th as one 2 year old.

Lovely family. They are some of my favorite people.

Beefalo has been pregnant MULTIPLE times...and nobody has an accurate account of how many children she actually has...she's lucky that the next census count isn't until 2020 and by that time...the Palin's will be a distant memory...so nobody will care how many kids Beefy has hanging off her hip!

Track HATES his mother! You know it and everybody else knows it! When he's FORCED to appear with his crazy mother...the body language and expression on his face has every psychologist picking up their phones to call the Palin compound to offer advice!

Wallow is following closely in her sister's footsteps but this time Baldy has Wallow on a tighter leash but because Baldy can only concentrate on Baldy...Wallow was able to slip that leash and get herself in the family way! That's too bad because Wallow seemed like one of the "smarter" Palin girls...but since she's now "graduating a year early" *SNORT*...she's reduced to riding on Beefy's coattails and going to "hair school"!

Piper is SCREWED! That poor child who is/was the same age as that poor little girl who got killed because of Baldy's "Crosshairs" target has no chance of having a normal life...meaning...no school with friends...because her Insane Clown Mother can't run the risk of Piper telling the TRUTH about her fucked up family! The first time a classmate ask Piper how many babies does her sisters have...Piper will start stuttering to the point where the authorities will have to be called!

I know many people are disappointed that this movie won't go far enough in uncovering the lies and deceptions that are Palin du jour, it will show a mentally unbalanced Palin to many who have never paid that much attention to her post-campaign. And really, that is all we can wish for--to discredit her so thoroughly that she will never again be elected to public office.

Had the movie revealed all of what we know about her, it would truly have seemed like fiction to those who are uninformed about her crimes and misdeeds, and would never have been screened on HBO.

It's not blogger myths! The majority of the negative out there about Sarah Palin is fact and proven. She tried to portray herself as someone she wasn't and isn't! She constantly lies, embellishes, is a horrid wife and mother (kids in trouble and affairs outside of her marriage). You need to read the books that are out there about her - proven/documented/interviews/names named/emails - I could go on and on! Plus, her record as to government in Alaska is horrid and all the facts are out there. She was proven to be unethical by the Alaska Legislature - her husband did a lot of HER work as 'quitter' governor. She never lasted in jobs she held - she always quit. Um, breastfeeding comes AFTER the baby is born.

And I am sure Game Change chose not to "go there" because that never crossed their mind. To an outsider, there was nothing weird about the Palin family. They are just a family, like yours and mine. Round up the wagons. Sarah is the politician, the subject of the movie. Her family is there as support, like always.

That she would allow herself to be stuffed like and shown in front of millions of people begs the question of her state of mind during that time. I don't know to feel sorry for her or be upset at the idiots who proposed the idea of stuffing a teenager.

Gryphen, with all due respect, chill out. A movie, like a play, or a novel, or a song, is a creative project meant to entertain and enlighten. It is not intended to be an expose or real life, nor is it's purpose to advance a political agenda - at least, not if it's GOOD entertainment and enlightenment. If you want agenda-driven claptrap movies, you've got "The Undefeated" as a prime example.

Despite the fact that it's about current affairs, what the directors and actors of "Game Change" have attempted to do is what all good, professional creative collaborative artists do - create a work of fiction that is a compelling story with believable characters, with a narrative arc that resolves itself.

Stop thinking of "Game Change" as something that will vindicate your opinion of Sarah Palin. That's not its purpose.

The reason the film doesn't get into Babygate is because that's not what the film is about - it's story is something else.

It would have been artistically wrong for the makers of this film to depict Sarah as you want her to be depicted.

As for it being a difficult acting job for Ms. Farman to depict Bristol - yes, but not for the reasons you say. Good actors can get into their characters. And characters like Bristol are challenging, simply because they are on the surface so banal, so unintellectual, so bland.

And stop saying "If HBO had...." Corporate HBO is not the creative force behind this movie - it is the writers, directors, and cast.

I'm as interested as you in learning the truth about Palin, but don't look to a piece of entertainment to find it.

Yes well my point was that without exploring the relationship between Bristol and Sarah in depth, this film will miss one of the MOST important driving forces behind Palin's seemingly bizarre decisions on the campaign trail, and also a portion of the reason why she had some of her "mini-breakdowns."

I fully realize that the writers and producers of the movie could not address every drama that was going on behind the scenes. However I just decided to voice my frustration at what I consider a rather important piece of the puzzle not receiving the attention I believe it deserves.

      Dearest Bristol,

"No one" knows you personally? Including your family, boyfriends, erstwhile teachers?
Poor Levi: "biased and scorned." I'll bet your scorn is just killing him.
A "typical" young woman who hasn't yet even reached her majority is not "baby-crazed." Most typical young women attend high school; many go on to get job training, or attend college and even graduate school. Most don't have babies until they're mature and in their '20s. And most get married first.
So, most "typical" young women aren't "playing with kiddos" at your age. They're hiking, biking, playing musical instruments, reading books and writing papers, and even going on vacation by themselves or with a friend or two -- backpacking around Socialist Europe (you could afford it), or teaching English in a foreign country for a year or so, or volunteering in their communities, or with Americorps or Teach for America.
But, then, I live in a reality that's clearly very different from yours over there overlooking a dead lake and a dreary, dead-end life.

I know, right? One of the main reasons I would like to see the fact that Sarah shoved a pillow up her shirt exposed is to demonstrate how reckless the GOP has become. I mean really, to whitewash the basic fact of Sarah Palin's incompetence is one thing, but to willingly hide her mental illness including, but not limited to, her fake pregnancy is criminal. Probably most of the reason those who know refuse to tell - it would ruin John McCain and the rest of the GOP in one fell swoop.

When you really look at her, her smiling is totally fake, and not even a good fake. This is not a happy girl. I doubt she's ever been really happy in her life. I'm sure all her drinking/drugging/sexing has been about trying desperately to find some kind of happiness- even fake happiness because how could she know the real kind? I can understand the reluctance to make a movie depicting a sitting President (which is, apparently, one of the reasons they didn't choose the sections dealing with Hillary and Obama), but that would've been great. I saw "The Special Relationship" - also HBO - and Hope Davis was AMAZING as Hillary. The funny thing is, Julianne Moore was supposed to play her but couldn't due to her pregnancy.

Not surprised this movie doesn't deal with the pregnancy/Trig issue, as the book ignored it. I think that the pregnancy fraud story will either never come out, or will come out all of a sudden and will be THE story for months. Hoping for the latter!

Looks like Bristol had the chin implant to look "normal" like Melissa. I always thought Bristol looks a lot like grampa chucky cheese with a hint of jimmy the cricket. I liked her before she went with the late night talk show host look. The implant is very noticeable and so is the lipo on the jawline and the collagen upper lip but the rest of her face is still puffy which obviously shows she's had some sort of procedure done. C'mon Bristol, just tell the truth. You get more haters when you lie and you wouldn't have to spend so much time defending yourself to everyone. The truth shall set you free!

Good Gryphen brought it up. There is limited information on Track. Why is that? He's almost non existent. Sarah never glosses about him nor mentions him unless pressed. With how proud of Sarah is with her family, she hardly talks about her first born. She never even acknowledged the birth of her granddaughter from Track and Britta. What gives?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anonymous8:20 AM

What implant? Bristol had lipo to get rid of her round face. And Bristol put out ONE statement defending herself. "so much time defending herself" is a little dramatic. Bristol has a life, it appears a full one. Something you obviously need as it's sad you devote time to commenting on things you know nothing about. I see you stopped short of saying her ex should start telling the truth as well. Why is it always Bristol? Levi has told an equal amount of lies to falsely vindicate himself. Not respectable.

And Track chooses to remain out of the limelight. Why bring him into it? I did notice how NO ONE cared about current GOP candidates families joining the campaign as a voice. Huntsman daughters for one. If Bristol and WIllow did a video like that, you'd fiercely attack it, saying, "Palin uses kids once again."

      What gives?

Al candidates' families fiercely support their politico parents. Why attack just one?

It's been said that Track wants nothing to do with the publicity scene of his mother! She keeps lying about him too, which I'm sure pisses him off. She said he was in combat while on the campaign trail and afterwards - he was never!!! (The DD214 was provided on the internet!) How would you like having a mother like Sarah? Cannot begin to imagine what it was like living w/her! No wonder so many of them have been in trouble - which is also documented in Alaska!

They are such a strong, happy family, who love and support each other, and also are mature and not jealous or judgmental. I'm sure Sarah is just respecting the wishes of her older son --
which he expressed on one of his many visits home, or around the dinner table at Applebee's, while he was bouncing his daughter on his knee.

When you talk about exposing, why do you involve the extended and immediate family members? they aren't the ones who live dishonestly. They have nothing to hide. This movie is about Sarah, the woman selected to be VP, the candidate whose political career closely mirrors that of Barack Obama's. In 08, the dems and gop was identical in that they had an older, experienced candidate and a younger superstar with no substance.

@9:16, you're obviously a Palin, since you don't value education! President Obama has this thing called a law degree from Harvard. He taught Constitutional Law for 12 years. He was in the Illinois State Legislature and a Senator.

Dimwit Sarah was mayor of a tiny town the size of my high school and governor for one year of a state with less people than my smallish city. She did a piss poor job at both. And she never even actually graduated from college.

      Delete
    5. I meant "mere" in a sardonic way. The fact that Sarah chose to parade her family in the public and on the campaign trail signifies, to me, a total lack of the usual protective maternal instinct. It is also obvious to me that, knowing what we now know, Sarah should never have accepted the nomination. She was unqualified; her family was in crisis with an unwed teenager; she had recently "given birth" to a special needs child and her husband was a member of a secessionist group. Any one of these challenges would have deterred an intelligent person who cared about family and what is best for the country.

Yet Sarah threw her family's welfare aside to further her own ambition.

In the process, they expose just HOW unsuitable the Alaskan governor was.

That is all and that is enough. This time.

I agree with you co-dependency in one way. Bristol certainly relied and relies on her mother for guidance. Levi did say she frequently talked about her parents wishes, and less about the two of them. While both women are independent, they are one spirit it seems. Bristol was the one frequently in the Governor's office after all. Strong family unit indeed.

Look at it this way. Films are entertainment and hopefully quality first. HBO doesn't make bad products. And I don't believe they create false stories. Bristol isn't exactly an anomaly. She's a kindhearted, hard worker (what I've always heard from people who know her) who doesn't believe in regrets. Well, maybe with going against parental wishes by choosing her suitor of choice. But that's pretty typical of a teen.

We've seen how close the family was when they found out about her pregnancy. We've seen that bond. We've seen them come closer when a former almost-member of the family went full traitor. Nothing killed their spirits. I think that might be conveyed. Idealism, naivete when it comes to national media, and toughness only people with deep family values can muster.

Despite their home being vacate most of the campaign, as everyone spent time on trail, there was never not family present. Palin relatives, Heath relatives. So much happened in their lives during that time it's crazy. Family members were talking baby shower for the new addition come December, Bristol was successfully keeping herself from cutting her almost inlaws out of her life permanently. Must have killed her to have to for once pretend to be a part of Levi's family. He did always join hers first. Palin family members were ecstatic. Again, national media and naivete. There's a reason Sarah's loyalty is her family. They are her staunchest supporters and the people who will always love her. Sarah is one strong women for having survived the media onslaught. We saw her natural Cs at the diamondbacks game. In most Belmont pics, she looks normal. Shirts and dress styles make all the difference.

Ugh, Palin fans like 10:04 are so disturbing. Why do you purport to know her cup size? YUCK. She should worry about freaks like you, not HBO movies.

In Sarah's case, it's the fake bras that make the difference.

A woman doesn't go from busty Jayne Mansfield to pancake-twin Kate Moss from one week to the next. It has nothing to do with her clothing -- it's the underclothing that gives it away.

Slightly O/T -- I think Sarah wore the hideous bile green and black pleather combo last night to echo the colors in Julianne Moore's dress, worn at the premiere Thursday night. Same colors, very, very different effect.

And so here is the opportunity to reintroduce the faked pregnancy. After the movie people will be looking for more dirt on Palin and so if all your bloggers get on HP and try to direct traffic to your blog, it may be possible to revive it. Don't let this opportunity slip away. Yes, HP will try hard to censor it again but that could prove damaging to them. Other sites such as MotherJones probably won't censor.

And you know that there's nothing more important to this blog than to break it big time to the American people!

I thought the importance of this blog was to perpetuate lies about the Palins? People won't discuss Trig because there's nothing to discuss in most people's eyes. He's the baby of the family. AGAIN for the millionth time, normal people don't care about someone's family matters. Normal people have their own dramas and family matters. Why are you living through a family you don't know and bloggers obviously don't know? If Gryphen actually cared about truth and whom he gets info from, he would have disclosed truth about his beloved Mercede. He could have done so without destroying her, though according to many, she's destroyed herself and many friendships.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous9:38 AM

Think you are wrong! We do care about the Palins because so much of what they have projected for the past few years has proven to be nothing but lies.

The 'biggy' includes whether Sarah actually birthed the retarded child that she lugged all over the place during the campaign. She USED him as she did all of her other children (except Track as he'd have nothing to do with it or her!)

She faked the pregnancy - ask people in Juneau that were around her at the time!

When people profess to be someone they are NOT, or do something that brings out folks that were there and question the the story, that brings instant scrutiny upon themselves. As it did Sarah! Folks naturally research to get to the bottom of the 'supposed' truth or lie(s). It's truly Sarah's own fault and she has no one to blame but herself!

As long as Sarah Palin continues to stick her nose in national and international affairs, she is a public figure and fair game.

As long as Sarah Palin and her family continue to write books and star in reality teevee shows, they cannot complain that people are interesting in their lives.

Hardly 'just another family in politics'! They are by far the most screwed up family Americans have seen in a long, long time. The Alaska population is aware of it and the rest of the nation will become more aware after viewing the movie tonight on HBO.

Bet the books written about Sarah are going to be coming off the shelves or ordered. Good! I strongly suggest folks reading this blog refer to the following publications:

"Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin" - Frank Bailey (from her administration while 'quitter' governor)

"The Lies of Sarah Palin" - Geoffrey Dunn, and

      "The Rogue" Joe McGinniss.

All are well documented and you cannot put them down IF truly interested in the TRUTH about the worst governor Alaska has ever had!

No, coming from a successful political family myself, I can tell you that the Palins are not, repeat not, just another family, political or otherwise.

I say this without any hate, and I do not lie. These are all FACTS.

Oh, and I'm not jealous, either. I have so much the Palins would be jealous about, but I'm so private I won't reveal my personal life. Only the people who know me are privy to that.

I wonder if Brisket is going to seethe that a woman who is smarter and more educated is getting a part in a real movie instead of hoing herself out trying to get on a reality TV show. Must be very painful - "Why could't I play myself? I'm prettier than she is."

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous9:40 AM

It's simple really. Sarah hated seeing and witnessing constant fighting between her daughter and boyfriend. What's a mother to do? Let her marry just because there's a baby? That's the worst decision a person could ever make. Bristol looks to Sarah for guidance. Sarah gives advice. What's atypical here? Just because your side lost in reality doesn't make things weird, bad or effed. While I never expected barely-articulate and illiterate Levi to exact his teenage revenge. He did once sound amiable towards them, like they were the family he had always wanted. Why else would he ignore his own? He needed stability and Bristol's plans brought him that. After all, his family just crumbled months before the VP nomination. Thats a lot on his plate. No wonder he was a hothead.

All in all, all is better than it ever was. That's all that matters. Leave them be. Allow Game Change to speak it's truth and move on.

Pursuing the opportunity to show people what her life is really like is not desperately trying to be a reality star. It's correcting lies and mean rumors. Bristol is a mother, daughter, sister, friend and coworker. Why would she show herself any different on camera? What's to make up?

Palin is ineffectual and isn't even a name worth mentioning. 99% of people don't think about her. That is why she's not covered to the extent you feel she should be. She's a mother just supporting her family.

The Palins are such a totally dysfunctional family, and that is really sad. In no way would Sarah ever be able to handle being POTUS. We have already seen that she has neither the intelligence or dedication to ever hold public office again. She should stick to show business!

While I feel sorry for Bristol in a way, she seems to be very influenced by her mother's viciousness and vindictiveness. Best thing for her would be to take her son and move far, far away from her parents.
