Governor Sean Parnell supports "stand your ground" law in Alaska. Apparently there are not enough gun fatalities in the state for him.

"look I am a tiny, pasty face, loser, living in the shadow of Sarah Palin. Of course I need to encourage the passing of dangerous gun laws to feel masculine."
Courtesy of the Fairbanks NewsMiner:

Gov. Sean Parnell supports a proposal that would expand Alaskans' right to use deadly force as a means of self-defense -despite concerns raised in the past by members of his administration.

Current law describes a right to use deadly force in self-defense only when a person is at home or work. Rep. Mark Neuman, R-Big Lake, the sponsor of HB80, would extend the right to any place a person is legally allowed.

Supporters claim there is a "duty to retreat" imposed by current law that puts people's lives at risk and could send them to prison for defending themselves.

Opponents say the bill is a response to a problem that does not exist, as no Alaska prosecutor has gone after someone under those circumstances, and the effect would actually be giving violent criminals a self-defense claim to avoid prosecution.

Interestingly enough Parnell's own  ex-Attorney General spoke out vehemently against the bill back in 2010, when it was first introduced.

Former Attorney General Dan Sullivan wrote a scathing review of a 2010 bill that is nearly identical to HB80.

"This bill would encourage the needless taking of human life," Sullivan wrote in a March 15, 2010, letter to then-House Judiciary Chairman Jay Ramras. "In the (Dimond Center), Sears Mall, McDonald's or any other public location, a person is no longer required to walk away from a confrontation, but instead may kill another citizen even if they could have walked away with complete safety."

Assistant Attorney General Annie Carpeneti also spoke against the 2010 bill.

"We're confused and concerned about this bill," she said in a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee on the 2010 bill. She also said the state already has strong self-defense laws and the bill would only encourage violence.

The proposal died that year. Neuman introduced a slightly retooled bill in 2011.

Already Alaska has some of the most lax gun laws in the country, and we certainly do NOT need to be encouraging assholes to pick fights so that they can overcompensate for their shortcoming by shooting people in the streets.

It also should be no small consideration is that Alaska currently leads the nation in gun deaths per capita.

The state of Alaska leads the nation in per capita gun deaths, a new analysis by the Violence Policy Center shows.

The study released Monday indicates Alaska has a household gun ownership rate of about 60 percent and a gun death rate of about 20.64 per 100,000 people, nearly double the national rate.

Did you see that statistic?  60 percent of Alaskans have guns in their possession.

Currently they are encouraged to walk away from trouble. But if this law passes they will have every right to pull out their weapon and end the life of a fellow human being.

In the aftermath of what we have seen with the Trayvon Martin case, how can ANYBODY be this ignorant of the potential outcome if this law was to pass?

We call Parnell, Captain Zero.  We have usually used that nickname in response to his lack of personality.  After this we will use it to indicate his lack of intelligence, his lack of compassion, and the obvious lack of balls that he needs to stand up to the NRA.

San Parnell is a coward, and like ALL cowards he wants to hide behind a gun, or in this case a gun lobby, to make himself feel more like a man.

Does this mean if Todd Palin gets in your face in an Alaskan airport you can plug him?

I'm so disgusted with Alaska tonight I can't stand it. Sullivan gets elected again & gay rights lose. No hope for anyone but the maniacs for the foreseeable future - if ever.

They'll give away billions to the oil companies, celebrate the rights of vigilantes to slaughter anyone that they don't like the looks of, destroy women's rights, allow Pebble & Chuitna to destroy the land & the fish, kill all the predators & continue to sell the state off piece by piece, and Gawd knows what other atrocities will follow. I give maximum kudos to you Gryphen & the other good folks who have tried with all your hearts to change things, but I have no more hope. Thanks for all you've done. The enemies completely own the state.

It'll be a long, long time before I'll be able to read about Alaska again. It's too heartbreaking!! You have all my sympathy.

Based on what was noted above, I would think the Republicans would be fearful of passing this idiotic proposed law. There is a lot of anger out there about what is occurring in Alaska due to the Republican hold on it!

Well said, Gryphen, well said. I totally agree.

If the bill passes, then your governor and all of those who vote for it will share in the pulling of the triggers by those who will be permitted by it to take the law into their own hands. I, for one, would not want the responsibility. There is absolutely no reason for these laws and I cannot understand why companies like AT&T and CocaCola, just to name two of ALEC's funders, would want to encourage murder.

What a shame to see your Alaskan citizenry vote down Prop 5 as well.

Agreed. The NRA, the ALEC coalition, hell, the entire GOP right now, are all cowards, hiding behind their guns, their phony intyerpretation of the Constitution, and their oh-so-false belief in Christianity. This did not start with Sarah, but the speed with which these groups are now ramping up their hatred for their fellow man is stunning. If we do not vote all these people out of office, we will not recognize the United States, and I, for one, as a non-gun owner who tries to give people the beenfite of the doubt, will be looking for a truly free nation in which to live, America under ALEC is not free.

    1. Well, if you believe in scripture it says that problems are caused by "cold hearts" and also "wolves in sheep's clothing" and that's the new Christian sociopaths of the republican party takeover.

How do his wife and two daughters even respect him?

He makes me want to barf everytime I see his expressionless face appear before the media! He truly is "Captain Zero", the name provided him by Don Young!

The fact he could care less about Alaskans killing each other says it all. He should be recalled and sent to Wasilla to reside with his buddy Sarah Palin in that jail that is sitting w/o customers that the State of Alaska funded!

  8. Republicans, not content with killing over 100,000 Iraqi's, and 5,000 American soldiers (and making many more grieving widows and orphans) now turn their sights on this country, encouraging and offering cover for our citizens to prey upon one another. Haven't we had enough of their hateful ideology?

There is a LOT of anger in Alaska and I fear this law being passed. I see deaths occurring 'just because' and trials held that have a difficult time proving guilt.

Totally thought the voting situation in Anchorage to be horrid yesterday. Questions need to be asked - proof provided in some manner as to the votes being verified - recounted. Perhaps a complete 'new' vote should be done? It really sounds as though Minnery was up to absolutely no good in putting out an email to encourage people to run the polling places and overwhelmed them. How many folks came in from the Valley and voted that had no right to in Anchorage? They ran out of ballots? The woman running the election should be fired and replaced. An investigation needs to be held!!!!!

    Alaska is a fucking mess!!!!

For decades, we already have had self-defense laws, that give us the right to protect ourselves in our homes, or domain. IF we were met with danger.
    This law is totally unnecessary.

It is another rightwing Wild West law. That will let a lot of people get away cold blooded murder.

Alaskans can already protect themselves with a gun in their homes. But, this new law would take it 'outside' the home. We'd be going back to the 'old West' days in Alaska. I know Alaskans that have that personality already! Some already drive w/guns in their cars/trucks (some displayed and others not) and say they have them 'just in case'!

Think about it - bullies will likely be gone after if one of them pisses another off, etc.

We don't need this law in Alaska! We have too many renigades living here that would love to have an excuse to shoot another!

The fact that Parnell and other Republicans dig this speaks volumes!!

The town of Tombstone, Az had tougher gun laws in 1880. NO guns allowed in town!

How far back do these eedjits want to go?!

P.S. And, we all know what happens in Arizona...

You seem to be posting blogs at cross purposes. You condemn the voters for being anti-gay and then you condemn the stand your ground laws. Wouldn't it be better if all Alaskans go out and buy themselvess some more guns and then shoot each other dead? the rest of the world surely wouldn't give a fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Stand Your Ground laws are legalized premeditated murder.

Choose a victim (the boss you hate, the in-law, the ex, the neighbor, the teacher), lure them to a place with no witnesses, then BAM!

    Self-defense.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag, and to the National Rifle Association..."

THAT'S who is behind these bills, and who really runs this country.

They ply corrupt (there is really no other kind) politicians with money to do their bidding, i.e. pass laws that removes any liability from gun-owners for misusing their guns.

    Fuckers all. FUCK the NRA.

Don't agree with you on this one G. You are flat-out wrong buddy.

Guns saved my life TWICE as a young woman growing up in Alaska. Not that I had to plug anybody but the guns acted as a deference to the situations at hand and I would have used them if necessary. Looking back, I'm thankful I didn't have to shoot anyone - on the other hand, the ONLY reason I'm still alive to type about this is BECAUSE I HAD A WEAPON and was not afraid to use it.

Samantha Koenig would still be alive today if she had a weapon on her - or, at the very least, a stun gun or pepper spray AND KNEW HOW TO USE THEM. For her lack of self-defense, she ended up....well we all know how it ended for her. What a tragedy and totally preventable, in my opinion.

These are NOT the times to be anti-gun. Look up the statistics on how many people's lives are SAVED by having a weapon for self-defense. To quote a famous phrase, 'I'd rather by tried by a jury of 12, than to buried 6 feet under'. I teach my sons gun safety, we practice at gun ranges, and if I had a daughter, you can bet your ***, I'd be right in there teaching her self-defense. End of story. NO time for political BS anymore.

this is not about self defense or having guns. Its about killing that is not justified such as setting people up to be shot without a witness. don't make this life more difficult by passing a Stand your Ground law that is NOT self defense.

I back him 100%. Stand your ground laws are the way it should be. Assholes that intimidate you should be shot dead in the street like dogs. Go Parnell!

The statistic for gun deaths is ridiculous. How many of these gun deaths are village suicide? I'd venture a guess...80%.

    At least be fair.

I do not expect others to defend me. At age 63 with osteoarthritis in a previously shattered ankle and other joints, running away or fighting physically are pretty much out of the question for me. I guess I could just lock myself up in my home for safety. I choose to work, travel, and just peacefully live my life and I would hate to have to harm another, whether human or animal. I am not willing to be a victim. Given my age and physical challenges, I can see how I might look like one. If my safety is threatened I will have no hesitation in doing what it takes to defend myself.
I am not angry, nor am I mentally unbalanced. I am aware that there are predatory persons and animals around and that I may one day be confronted by one. That is reality.
I support clarifying a law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. I do not support the statute stating that trying to get away from a dangerous situation is always the thing to do. It can be a good way to get killed. Predatory instinct is to chase down one who is perceived to be prey.
