The stakes are high today as we have not only a totally useless Mayor to kick out of office, but also the opportunity to vote for Proposition Five which protects our LGBT community from discrimination.
If you have ANY doubt as to why we should vote Dan Sullivan out of office as our Mayor, I direct you to the Top Ten Reasons as laid out by our good friend Jeanne Devon over at Mudflats.
As for Proposition Five, that should be a no brainer for most of us, but just in case you need some more information this should bring you up to speed:
The Wall Street Journal notes that Alaska is one of 12 US states where neither the state nor any of its municipalities outlaws discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. The city’s Assembly had originally approved just such an ordinance in 2009, but Mayor Dan Sullivan had vetoed it, saying there was no evidence that discrimination was a problem in Anchorage. This was the spur for the birth of Proposition 5, unusual in that public referenda tend to be launched by anti-gay groups and attempt the reverse.
“It’s a hornet’s nest, and has gotten ugly,” said Jim Minnery, head of Protect Your Rights, the group that leads the fight against Prop. 5. Whereas Trevor Storrs of One Anchorage Campaign, which backs the measure, said that the campaign launched by their opponents only “encourages hate and violence.”
A version of this bill has already passed once, only to be vetoed by Dan Sullivan as he first came into office. In order to ensure victory this time around we have to also make sure that Sullivan is replaced by somebody who is NOT a puppet of homophobic Pastor Jerry Prevo.
Of course there are other important ballot issues to weigh in on as well, so I certainly hope that we have a huge turnout today.
Remember if YOU don't speak up at the voting booth, there is a far greater chance that the loudest voice to be heard representing our fair city will be one of disharmony, disrespect, and discrimination.
And haven't we as people had enough of being represented by that voice?
P.S. Click here for polling places in your neighborhood.
Off topic, but I just had the biggest laugh. Sarah is on the Today Show saying one topic will be the criticism Jessica Simpson received for her weight gain in pregnancy. Sarah says she considers that "unfair." Another topic are teen prom dresses and whether "government and schools" should be able to tell them what to wear. Government?
ReplyDeleteOMFG---Just watched the Wasilla Wacko EST and she DID NOT disappoint. Gryphen, you will have material for weeks breaking down that 5 min fiasco. There was so much hypocrasy I can't even remember how to spell the word or have a coherent thought. I SURE DID LAUGH OUT LOUD--especially when she was saying how bad it was for those college kids to have a site tearing down others----Hey, scara, crosshairs remind you of anything. Once again, the egg is on her face. The only redeeming quality in this woman is her ability to be embarrassed and made fun of and not getting it.
ReplyDeleteThe guests are looking at her and treating her like she is some kind of contagious virus. You can see in there eyes that they can't stand her and don't believe a thing she is saying--it is absolutely stunning to watch. So far they keep referring to any subject discussed as if scara does it differently in paylinland and want to know HOW "she" does it--referring to the Tory Spelling spot. This is so much fun!!!
ReplyDeleteShe is in the Land of Hollywood and making comments how "thin" the expectations are for the Jessica Simpson spot and was it not revealed about how desperate she was to be thin during the campaign and didn't Shailey and the spa reveal her lipo dissolving treatments????> Good Luck Gryphen there is so much ....
ReplyDeleteNow they are talking about self-esteem in teenage daughters.....ha....ha ......ha haaaaaaaa This is just one GIANT slap in paylin's face.
ReplyDeleteInjecting yourself in your daughter's life...................OMFG this is surreal.................Father's role, not being a friend.....ha ha ha ha ha
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job, Sarah Palin, with a pat on the back....... (end of Teen Daughter segment)What is she two? Did you guys give her a star for her forhead. They are treating her like a little kid and making sure she is OK like you would with a kid riding a horse for the first time WTF? How do you do this, Gryphen?????
ReplyDeleteOMG - I just loved the last segment that was on. They had 2 women on with Palin and Ann Curry talking about teenage daughter's self esteem. Palin tried to push hard (without mentioning Bristol) for a reality show about a hardworking young women different from other reality shows. One of the other women, who is a doctor, said no that reality shows were not good that the family should be the one promoting good values. It was hilarious!!! Also they said that mothers should not try to be "friends" with their daughters. Meanwhile Palin is sitting there with that godawful rhinestone belt and boot cut jeans like a teenager would wear rather than dressing appropriately for a "co-anchor" spot on a morning show.
ReplyDeleteIts so pathetically psthologivsl to see a nearly 50-something dressing inappropriately for her age while trying to make the case for mothers not trying to be bff's with their children...all I can say is that palin was totally eclipsed by everyone on the show, shown for the opportunist grifter she is, and has given the comics even more punchlines to epitomize the pathetic charicature whom she has become.
DeleteAlso at the end of the segment with talking about daughters, Ann Curry said they had to end it and Palin kept talking. Ann looked off to the side like what the hell and finally touched Palin and said once again that that segment was over. Palin is doing a horrible job and shows her for the airhead she is.
ReplyDeleteIn the segment with Star Jones, Donny and Dr Nancy, they were speaking of being critical of Jessica Simpson's weight and then brought it around to politicians. Donny threw it to Palin that she was being critical when she said earlier "anyone but Obama". Palin tried to fluff it off by saying that wasn't being critical, but just trying to get people to look at the other side. Hypocrite!! You could tell that Star Jones cannot stand Palin. She would hardly even look at her.
ReplyDeleteI must say even though she has such disdain for the Hollywood set, that is her element even though she is poorly prepared, poorly dressed (OMG), and amazingly out of touch. She would be great in the World Wrestling/Monster Truck type venue. Nice try, scara, still falling short. Asked what she thought about raising daughters....all she could come up with is NOT being your kid's friend......scara, that is soooooo 80"s did you do any research? Apparently NOT! I think I saw What's her Face, can't think of her name, ROLL her eyes.
ReplyDeleteOMG - she claimed that she had not planned to wear that outfit that she had on but she realized last night that the jacket she was going to wear was the one she wore 4 years ago when Matt interviewed her. What a freaking lie. She must have realized how inappropriately she was dressed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bloated tool/fool! C4P must be going bonkers that she allowed herself to be so set up on all fronts....her fake pregnancy, her undisciplined daughters, negativity in politics....wow!
ReplyDeleteWell, back to topic! Good luck, Anchorage, in voting for equality today. Our local (Traverse City Michigan) referendum on equality in jobs, housing, etc. passed with flying colors. Those who put the matter on the ballot have now turned to fighting the school district's widely supported anti-bullying policy. I wonder - why would anyone think that bullying kids is a good thing?
ReplyDeletePS I didn't watch the Today Show this morning but I've enjoyed reading comments about it! Sarah Palin needs to disappear back to her Wasilla home forever.
Beaglemom
I voted early on Friday. Yes on Prop 5. Any time I can cancel Prevo's vote is a GREAT day for me. PLEASE Anchorage, turn out in numbers and shut him down.
ReplyDeleteI voted today, did you?
