By the way another one of my ongoing complaints about Christianity is that it still promotes the idea of "spare the rod, spoil the child," which, as somebody who works with abused children, I find incredibly offensive and essentially prehistoric when compared to modern child raising techniques. The day you punch your child, or "crack his wrist," is the day that you need to recognize that you are unfit to be that child's parent.
Having said that my very testosterone driven impulse upon hearing this Pastor Sean Harris guy talk about abusing a child in front of a room full of clapping adults was the desire to beat the holy shit out of him right in front of his congregation, and then asking him if that managed to change his sexuality or change the fact that he was homophobic piece of shit.
Fortunately I am not close enough to act on such an impulse, and I actually hope I never would if I were, but I certainly had it nonetheless. However I am civilized and educated enough to realize that doing such a thing would do more harm than good, and I can only hope that the people who listen to this kind of garbage will learn that as well, BEFORE they do irreparable harm to their children.
Just another whacked out kristyun spewing out his hate for humanity. Still, I'll just bet that half of Americans will give him the benefit of the doubt and remain silent on the whole thing. When he should be banned from speaking in public and taken out and tarred and feathered.
ReplyDeleteYou see folks, his ugly screaming is an egregious crime but it's not what people want to hear. Religion is popular and homosexuality is not and therefore people don't want the gay 'in their faces' every day. Be tolerant of others choices but let sleeping dogs lie. We don't need reminding every day by people like Maddow, etc. Still Jesse, give us a couple every day and see how it works out for you. LIke, this one should get at least 25 replies!

Was thinking that some might like to read my parting message over at C4p.
ReplyDelete---------------
This place has far too much nastiness and divisiveness for me so I'll say my few parting words and be on my way.
There is one way to convince Sarah to run for president. That way is to try to convince her that there is nothing to fear in her past that will be unacceptable to the electorate. And so, Sarah needs to come clean with her big secret because it will be accepted as her being a good and honorable mother and a good person. She needs to come clean on the fact that she faked the pregnancy for her daughter. Therein lies Sarah's fear of being exposed, when it's all quite unnecessary. Her deception will be readily accepted by not only her supporters but those who haven't been persuaded as of yet that she is the best candidate. The only candidate.
Now ya'all have a good tantrum now ya hear!
---------------
Think it will stay up long enough for anybody to read it?
I watched the segment last night as well, and I agree with your post. It was hard to comprehend that this person believes that he is preaching religion. Doesn't it ever occur to these "preachers" that if God did not want there to be homosexuals, she would not have created them? And I couldn't help but notice that this preacher seemed to have a little of the gay in him himself; could it be that he has some issues about his own sexuality?
ReplyDeletegod didn't create homosexuals dear. god didn't create anything because god is a fairy tale. But besides that, homosexuals weren't born that way, they became that way. The pressure to believe otherwise is from the homosexuals themselves because they can't live with anything else. They need to finally come to face the hard facts. Or better still, leave sleeping dogs lie as I advocate here time after time.
DeleteDo you have the courage to allow the discussion to take place Jesse? Sorry that it's so 'at home and personal' to you but it's you who wants to keep the topic alive so much. So whattaya say now?
No, dear, they---the great majority of them-- did not "become that way." They were BORN that way. And the pressure to believe otherwise comes from people who can't live with the fact that EVERYBODY is not born heterosexual. Just as EVERYBODY is not born within the boundaries of what our society describes as normal. What kind of cryptic
Deletecraziness are you spouting---"Let sleeping dogs lie?"
You sound like a total idiot, I must say. What exactly is your point? You have the voice of a homophobe and it's coming across loud and clear.
DeleteHomosexuality and homosexual behavior has been a part of nature and life since the beginning of time, with evidence in many animal communities. Did THEY listen to 'pressure' from the 'homosexuals themselves' in order to live out their particular sexual orientation?
You really need to get a little more up to speed on biology and leave the theology to the theologians.
And what's with coming to Jesse's blog and challenging him in such a lame ass way?
Go fuck yourself with a hard stick. Yeah, those are the 'hard facts' that you are a homophobe that is afraid of your own sexual orientation.
I certainly agree with you about "gawd".
DeleteBut you are terribly wrong about the gayz.
It was obvious to everyone that my nephew was gay when he was in first grade. His fraternal male twin is straight. (That actually occurs quite often.)
Please cite your references for the "becoming" of gayz.. I would like to read your sources.
What is it in homosexuals that makes you feel so inferior? Your comment, alone, shows your ignorance of the subject, if you have kids, and one turns out to be gay, would you condone abusing them?
DeleteIn my view, it doesn't matter whether someone was born gay or "chose" to be gay.
DeleteIt is a non-issue.
Sex is fun and love is what makes the world worth living in, so I don't have a negative opinion about any adult finding another adult attractive or worthy of being loved- no matter what the combination.
We can't keep worrying about nature vs nurture, because it frames the discussion as though there is something unfortunate about it, when there isn't.
The only unfortunate part about having a gay child would be the unnecessary pain you would watch them endure due to the crazy, cruel attitudes of too many people.
I watched this on Lawrence's show last night and was absolutely repulsed by the preacher's comment about the 'smell' of little girls!
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought him to be a deviate and thought the liklihood of his being a child molestor very, very possible.
Why would anyone attend his church and listen to his repulsive crap?
I personally think he should be investigated posthaste with his computers being pulled and checked.
His supporters ( and there was a congregation full of laughing and amen-ing people, later described by the pastor as being overwhelmingly incredibly supportive) want people to listen to the whole sermon so as not to take his words out of context. Well. So, I went on line and listened to the sermon. I also learned that Pastor Harris wants people in the congregation to have children. "America needs lots of children." Muslims are having children at an incredible rate. When "we implode financially... the Muslims will take over us, as we plummet into a Third World country." Whah! This was a NORMAL Sunday sermon. No need to edit before it was on the internet.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with spare the rod, spoil the child. The problem is that it is taken literally. The same problem we find with the bible, constitution, etc. Those with limited brain cell function take it as a direction to beat their children.
ReplyDeleteThis is not the intent.
It is about discipline. It is about setting rules, and providing positive consequences for compliance and negative consequences for violations. The goal being that the person can eventually discipline themselves without external vigilance or punishment. There are plenty of ways to instill discipline in children that do NOT require beating them with a stick.
But failure to do anything does result in a spoiled, selfish, self-centered child who lacks control, is unsocialized and feels a sense of entitlement that has no rational basis.
I'm not sure religion is at fault for this mindless literal interpretation. It may be some sort of learning disability or mental limitation that also causes people to embrace racism, the extreme right and have no ability to recognize irony or sarcasm.
There is nothing wrong with 'spare the rod, spoil the child'?????
DeleteWhat more needs to be said?
12:44 - did you even read the rest of the post? The poster did not advocate hitting a child in any form or fashion. There are forms of discipline that do not require physical abuse.
DeleteOr are you of the opinion that a child should be given whatever he wants, whenever he wants and can behave in whatever fashion he pleases, no matter how it affects others?
ever wonder why gay people are so hated?
ReplyDeleteits because religion causes hate and everyone reading this that considers them self religious or a so called christian is a hateful piece of crap.
and btw any of you scum bags who think you have the right to hit your child should be in prison being abused daily by some deranged inmate who
ironically ALSO is just as religious as you are.
if i had my way all religious people would be prevented from having children and forced to wear a mozzle in public and stoned to death if they even spoke a single religious word.
what is a mozzle?
DeleteI detest religion and the folks that say they are christians that in no way act as 'christians'! Most of them lie, cheat, steal, have affairs on their spouses, utilitze prostitutes and on and on. Many are so NOT what they profess!
Deletelol..muzzle obviously.
Deleteto hard for you to think i typed an o instead of a u there?
is your head up in the sky-god?
thinking about beating your kids and cant understand a typo?
cant wait to get home to force your wife to submit to ya?
cant wait to find some gay porn while typing how bad homos are in some religious post?/
lol
It's something made for people who are too stupid to understand that typos are sometimes made. Get it now?
DeleteGryphen, please,
ReplyDeleteI read your blog 2-3 times a day. I agree with you 99.9% of the time. But PLEASE STOP lumping all Christians into the same pot of stupid! We are not all alike!! Please, perhaps up there in Alaska all you get a first hand glimpse of is the stupid like this idiot pastor. But, aren't you seeing any of the wonderful work the UCC is doing? Or the Episcopal Church with Bishop Gene Robinson? Our own assistant rector was gay, married, for Christ's sake! I bet 20% of our congregation is lgbt! And we do many good works, which doesn't make the news. Because it's not "sexy". Because it doesn't make people go "Look! Christians behaving badly!". You are painting us all with the same brush. And you're smarter than that, I know this. At least, when you're going to criticize a Christian pastor, put in the crazy's denomination. Because it's like saying a bb gun is the same as a howitzer. and they're not the same. /rant off.
See Jesse! Here's one in defence of that evil and vicious kristyun preacher. Their religion runs a lot deeper than you are willing to acknowledge. If they in any way defend this kind of kristyun evil then they will defend anything.
DeleteThey are all basically the same. Their christian beliefs make them all the same. None of it is worth defending for one minute. Not this one or any of the other ones who are only clever enough to keep their true feelings to themselves.
DeleteMay they all rot in the ground some day soon!
12.46 anon, I am not at all in "defence" of that evil and vicious "kristyun" preacher. He'll probably find a very toasty afterlife, I don't judge, as he does. I am distancing myself, and my other congregants from that person, and standing up for good people who happen to be Christian. And if you can't see that, (and learn to spell), then there's no discussion that can be had here.
DeleteSame goes for you, 12.49.
If Jesse and some of the rest of us simply do not believe in god then there is no argument that can make us see that any church that worships a 2,000-year old tale is justified in doing so, even if they are supportive of homosexuals. I personally find that anyone that believes in god is missing the point. That being said, enjoy your own personal faith and pursue it without harming others and without attempting to change other's minds regarding your faith. I don't run around trying to make people see my Atheist viewpoint and accept it as their own. Other faiths need to do the same. Also, I don't have a tax-exempt meeting hall that collects funds from fellow supporters. I take major offense at our country allowing ANY faith to practice untaxed.
Delete1.44, I am fully in favor of having non-profits being taxed, and I am not trying to change your mind about faith. We do not proselytize. I really don't care who has a religion, or does not. But saying I am defending evil simply because I belong to a church is wrong. You say you can't see our church is justified, I'm not asking for justification. I am asking for a little respect for the good we do, in spite of the religious aspects of it. A little respect that all good people deserve.
DeleteAnd 12.49, we're all going to rot in the ground someday, regardless of our beliefs, or lack thereof.
People like this North Carolina preacher and the folks sitting in front of him laughing and amen-ing away are not Christian at all.
ReplyDeleteHis retraction was probably written by his attorney.
And the moment a preacher, no matter the denomination, mentions voting from the pulpit, his/her church should lose its tax-exempt status.
Beaglemom
Like the jerk Jerry Prevo in Anchorage, AK...he does nothing BUT preach politics from his pulpit and gets his dogs out when it comes to vote - to vote the way he says and they follow in step - all in their red t-shirts! Makes me want to barf!
DeleteI was born this way. I was shamed into life in a closet. I was a member of an all boys evangelical church orchestra. Reverend Bob held auditions. I am an old man now and have never had anyone tell me they loved me and wanted to spend eternity with me. I see hypocrisy all around me and have long lost my religion. Funny, I still pray every night. If you could hear me, you would say that I'm talking to myself (and you might be correct).
ReplyDeleteDo one thing for yourself before you die. Get over the religion fairy tale. Yes, I hear you and feel your pain, even though I don't subscribe to your 'born with' beliefs.
DeleteMy post on Palin's faked pregnancy over at c4p has now been up for over an hour. Check it out and add to it. Something may be happening and it may be allowed to happen because they know they need to face up to the truth. Too much to hope for?
DeleteAnonymousMay 3, 2012 12:32 PM
DeleteI don't know you, but don't beat yourself up over how you were raised or who you are. It's people like you that make me stand up for LGBT rights.
FWIW, I'm a non believer and I've talked to myself many times, especially behind the wheel. It's when you start answering yourself, it's time to worry ;o)
Gryphen, once again you're reacting BEFORE you've had a chance to consult your bible to find out you're 110% wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt is written thusly:
"Whosoever be called Pastor shall be free of Sin for all Eternity plus 48 hours and lie Blameless for all Misfortune, Pestilence, Transmission of Diseases of the Uro-Genital Tract plus all Thefts, be they Great or Small, they may Choose to Inflict on their Brethren and Cistern."
Utero 17:76
So, you see he can say anything he wants to say without fear of incurring god's wrath. If it wasn't true, they couldn't put it in the bible. It says THAT in the bible, also, too. Clearly, you owe the good pastor an apology. (and then a merciless beatdown.)
More defence of that which is indefensible. What a sad joke when your own people here are so indoctrinated with the christian lies that they can't even see the ugly truth staring them in the face with this example.
DeleteJesse, the majority of your bloggers are demonstrating that they are lost.
Hahahaha! Jesse's fucking bible????? Hahahahaha!
DeleteHey, psssttt, Beldar writes satire.
DeleteOh Boy!
DeleteBeldar's got the fur flying!!!!
Do it again! ;o)
Whoever this"fairy tale", "christians" suck, poster is,
DeleteIs a fucking moron!!
wow.
The atheists can have you!
It's times like this I wish you had a Like button, Gryphen. Or maybe a button that when pressed sets off a brilliant display of fireworks. As for everyone insisting that not all Christians are alike-- of course no. But you have to remember that THESE are the people who are representing you to the world.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who was raised in a cult and was able to realize the traumatizing mental and emotional harm that brainwashing like this can lead to... I have to say that pretty much all religion employs the same brainwashing techniques.
But you have to remember that THESE are the people who are representing you to the world.
DeleteWhich is why I try to represent the other side of Christianity, the part that does good things for all people. But, see, we don't wear our religion on our sleeves. Because then we'd be accused of trying to convince others to join us. So I'm here trying to represent the other side.
I am with you otto katz.
DeleteDep’t. of WTF: Pastor Sean Harris emailed me to “clarify”. Doesn’t he know I’m a liberal atheist and ardent supporter of gay rights?
ReplyDeleteI got an email from Sean Harris just now… at least I think it’s from him. I have no idea why, since I didn’t write a post about him (I didn’t want to expose our readers to his vile screed), nor did I tweet about the utterly disgusting, despicable things he said. Instead, I chose to shun the poor excuse for a human being.
He likely blast-emailed every political site in the entire blogosphere.
Here’s a screen grab of the email, which I assume is authentic based on the return address (which I blacked out). If not, one of his supporters is desperate to rebuild what’s left of his wretched image:
http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/2012/05/03/dept-of-wtf-pastor-sean-harris-emailed-me-to-clarify-doesnt-he-know-im-a-liberal-atheist-and-ardent-supporter-of-gay-rights/
Well, they finally took all my posts down over at c4p. But it all stayed up for an hour and 15 and lots of them read it. Man, the smoke will be rising from that rat's nest for a few days over that one. Which just goes to show that the truth can be aired even there if it's done when the mods are in bed 'sleeping' with their sons and daughters and cousins.
ReplyDeleteChurches are scary places! Thank you again Mom and Dad for raising us outside of such incredibly frightening influences! I must now email my folks and thank them again personally. So sad that these places exist, and tax-free to boot! The mind just boggles at such ignorance.
ReplyDeleteYour essay is well written Gryphen. As to the dustup in the news about Romney and the firing of his aide, it behooves all of us to pay attention. I have worked with Mormons and they are exceedingly deceptive when it comes to gay rights. It is a hot-button issue and creates a great deal of complex and uncomfortable situations. The basic tenant in Mormonism is respect until it comes to one’s Mormon gay child, friend or relative. Then it is all about praying away the gay. Don’t get me wrong, there will be basic kindness, but there will also be the stab in the back when nobody else can see it done. A Mormon follows the laws laid down by the church no matter what.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I listened to the whole thing and at the end this “pastor” sends a message to his flock to go out and vote this week. O’Donnel’s comment as to who this man is encouraging his flock to vote for is spot-on. When will this church’s tax exemption be taken away? And why hasn’t it already happened?
ReplyDeleteLO'D is missing the point of this diatribe. It isn't about who this POS wants for president. It's about Amendment 1 - NC's disgusting tribute to NOM and the fundies. This amendment could be used to cause great harm to all NC families but the right is making it all about gay marriage - which is already illegal in NC so, really, what's the point of all this? NC already has laws on the books prohibiting gay marriage, civil unions and common law marriages. All this amendment will do is cause more harm than good. It could effect straight (I really hate that word used in this context btw) couples who have children together but aren't married. It will effect medical coverage of children of unmarried couples both LBGT and straight. It will void protection orders against abusers if the victim is not married to the abuser.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a native of NC, moved here over 6 years ago and absolutely love it here.....most of the time. It's things like this that make me miss my home state of CT. Thankfully, not all North Carolinians agree with this a$$hole and a lot of the churches are speaking out against the amendment.
I had attached a url to a great video regarding this subject a few days ago but for some reason the positive video did not make your collection Jesse. I'll try to find it again and send it your way. It would be nice for the rest of your readers to know that not all the churches down here are insane child abusers.
Here's the link I sent the other day...

This shit is like the Salem witch hunt. Most of these fire and brimstone types are closeted. They are really insecure within their own sexuality, and lash out at Gay people out of frustration. Gay folks, first and foremost are human beings. Treat all human beings with respect. Yours truly, a straight man.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 12:32 PM
ReplyDeleteYour post truly made me so sad.Your post has me feeling awful.I can't imagine to have never heard the words, "I love you".
You sound like you are a very nice person. I hope you do find love and happiness sometime in your life and a friend to share it with. Even though you are an old man, there HAS to be someone, somewhere that can be your friend. I hope you find them. Good luck to you..don't give up.
O/T This was posted at peezoo and I suspect it will be disappeared soon:

Its raving lunatics like this jagoff that caused me to stop going to ANY church.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not mistaken, the worst sin a person can commit is to be the cause of another's turning from God.
I'd speculate that a stoking of a hotter area of Hell is going to be taken on, when this guy gets there.
I have no use for jackasses like that pastor, or anyone who claims a belief in any god as an excuse to act out their anger and hatred on other people.
ReplyDeleteI also have no use for the idea that "all religious people would be prevented from having children and forced to wear a mozzle in public and stoned to death if they even spoke a single religious word."
Two sides of a coin. If it is wrong for religious people to hurt people in the name of their god, it is equally wrong for non-believers to stone people to death (or harm them in any other way) for having differing beliefs.
It is just as wrong to say all religious people deserve to be put to death as it is wrong to say atheists are evil because they don't believe.
Well said Nefer. Some of the comments on this post are really over the top, lots of hate and anger. Very disturbing.
DeleteAgreed!
DeleteThe hypocrisy is stunning!
the rant about girls was vile (you can play sports but need to dress like a girl sometimes).
ReplyDeletethe rant against boys was bizarrely vile (limp wrist? who even says that anymore?)
the concept of forcing a stereotype onto children is vile. and to force it with violence is out of the ballpark insane.
the whole audience that sat there and listened and stayed is vile.
that's right girls and boys have to base their lives on their sexuality.
ReplyDeleteGirls can only be wives and work as secretaries, they are forbidden to be police or firefighters you know men's jobs.
Boys must be macho jerks that would never be a nurse or school teacher.
Our poor kids certainly can amount to much more then what this narrow minded moron foresees. Why pass these ridiculous sexist ideas on to children? What a jack### this guy is...
This guy made my blood boil, but what bothered me the most was the congregants laughing and agreeing. Yesterday I saw the entire fifty five minute sermon (I know, but I just wanted to see how low he could go), toward the end his voice started cracking, his face was beet red and the veins in his forehead were literally bulging. After pushing for the vote in the next three weeks, He ended his tirade by passing around the basket for a "special offertory", separate from the normal tithe, to " help rid the earth's face of the scourge of homosexuality" and to "Bring the teachings of the bible to action".
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't deserve any forgiveness whatsoever, from anyone.(My husband had the same reaction as you, btw).
Hey Gryphen,
ReplyDeleteI was going to email you a jpg of this quote from Corey Booker, Mayor of Newark, NJ...but alas I think I've lost it in a computer 'incident' a while back!
Anyway, I'm sure you know about him and may have already seen this quote, but it really applies in these situations. So-called 'Men of God' who are so full of hatred and anger, who preach everything contrary to what Christianity was at one time, very long ago, meant to be.
Although even that is a stretch when you consider that the writing of the Bible began after Jesus had been dead ( or undead?) for five or more decades, and was worked on and added to over several centuries.
Often the writers had political reasons, or other agendas and used their writings to control a particular group.... Then the whole thing was edited with 'unfavorable' parts thrown on the cutting room floor. Add to that all of the changes made during translations, and what the Catholic church and various Popes did to it.
Sadly, what remains contains very, very little of what Jesus may have actually said. And those who think they know what he said, are arrogant and nothing like the man they purport to love.
Raised as a Catholic, I quit that club as soon as I graduated from high school...between the mostly bitter nuns (except for kind Sister Genevieve) and the blatant hypocrisy, I saw no valid reason to stay.
I pretty much belong to your club these days.
But when I read Mayor Booker's words I was touched and while I may not be of his faith, I am certainly a believer in what he's saying. Booker is the same guy that pulled his neighbor from a burning house a few weeks ago, and a Rhode's scholar to boot! Keep your eye on him, he's going places and we'd all be very fortunate to have him in the White House someday!
You can find some good jpg's of this online featuring a pic of Booker with a heading of:
"The Christian Left"
“Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.”
—
Mayor of Newark New Jersey Cory Booker
Amen, Mayor Booker.
DeleteAwesome!
DeleteGovernor Booker.
Scratch the surface of this hate-spewing "Christian" and you'll probably find either a pedophile or a repressed homosexual.
