Bar heckler, Stephen Hanks, to sue Bristol Palin for defamation.

Courtesy of MSNBC:

A man who heckled Bristol Palin in a Los Angeles bar and insulted her conservative politician mother, Sarah Palin, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing the single mom of defamation.

Talent manager Stephen Hanks also sued cable channel Lifetime, which includes film of the 2011 incident in Bristol Palin's upcoming reality TV show, claiming he had not given the program's makers his permission to be filmed.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. federal court in Los Angeles, stems from a widely publicized September 2011 incident at a bar and restaurant on the famous Sunset Strip.

The amount of damages is not specified but Hank's lawyer, Los Angeles-based Michael Gulden, told Reuters the suit had been filed in federal court because the plaintiff was seeking more than $75,000. Representatives for Palin and Lifetime did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This is what Hanks had to say about his reasons for suing Bristol:

Palin later told celebrity magazine In Touch that the incident was one of the reasons she had decided to leave Los Angeles and return to her home in Wasilla, Alaska.

Hanks claims in his lawsuit, however, that Palin had bought a new house in Alaska in July 2011 (That sounds about right.), and that she had defamed him by publicly blaming their encounter for her decision to leave Los Angeles.

Hanks also says he suffered emotional distress and invasion of privacy over Palin's questions about his sexuality, and the use of the incident in publicity for the TV reality show.

"Bristol Palin's conduct was outrageous", states the lawsuit, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

"Bristol Palin first accused Plaintiff off 'being a homosexual' in a degrading manner in front of others ... she then in a magazine article blamed Plaintiff for her decision to leave Los Angeles for Alaska even though she had purchased her home in Alaska ... more than two months before the encounter," the lawsuit adds.

Apparently Hanks claims to have tried to settle out of court but there was no response from Lifetime.

So what do we think, legitimate claim, attempt to renegotiate deal, or publicity stunt?

Well the show definitely needs SOME kind of drama to gain attention.

Publicity stunt. Some people will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame- even sell themselves and their friends out. I also think this bar scene is going to be used by the RNC to get mega donations from the right wing christians so the evil gays don't get 'em. I hope I'm wrong, but I think that's what is going to play out.

I read the LA Times article on another blog and it said Bristol Palin was 21 years old when this took place. Really? Didn't she just turn 20? Trying to make it legal for her to be in that bar?? They have used so many fake ages for those kids, but I didn't think she was 21 yet. At least I don't think she was when that scene was taped in that bar. Think that was discussed at the time it happened...she was underage to be in there. In the original video his faced was seen but in the new footage, it was not (just the back of a bald head) and Bristol's face was visual (lights on her). Not so much in the original. Something very fishy here. Did they retake it not showing his face so he couldn't sue? Hope he has the original for the court room and her asking about him being a homosexual. She didn't say that in the clip I saw of the new one. Fishy, indeed!

Doing business and/or working with the Palins is akin to selling your soul to the devil himself...just ask Frank Bailey, John McCain, Meghan McCain, TLC, Shailey Tripp, and numerous Alaska legislators.

My gut tells me that this hoax is about as "for real" as the GANG RAPE THREATS that Sarah claimed the girls were getting while attending school over in Juneau. You remember, don't you?

Those were the threats that Sarah forgot to mention to her security detail and didn't even notify law enforcement about, but for which she still used as one of her excuses to move the family back home to Wasilla while serving her half-term as Governor.

Of course, that deal was sweetened because she was then able to collect her per diem of $60/day from the state.

Leave her alone, gayz! All Bristol wants is to raise her son ALL BY HERSELF because since Wallow is a quitter like Sarah, there's absolutely NO ONE ELSE TO HELP BRISTOL by babysitting for Tripp [other than his nanny and about 15 other relatives nearby].

Bristol... meanwhile, is STRUGGLING to make ends meet while keeping her full-time job she has had for YEARS as a hard-working OFFICE MANAGER plus being a big TV-star and professional dancer.

Wait, did I mention how hard Bristol is trying to keep her son's and her own private lives very PRIVATE?

Bristol Palin moving to L.A. was a pathetically conceived publicity stunt. No reason why a girl with a support system and enabling family to move to a place where she is a stranger and (ahem) 10 pounds overweight.

Tripp is her responsibility and she chooses to be a single parent (and not co-parent with Tripp's father) yet she piles on the guilt and care on Willow, her little sister that managed not to get pregnant at this age yet is still saddled with Bristol's "mistake."

I have news for Bristol, who claims to have such thick skin. The guy didn't like her mother and said so. There are a lot of us out here who don't like Sarah Palin, didn't think that she had any business running for VP, and probably didn't give birth to Trig. If Bristol is going to dissolve in tears every time that some one criticizes her mother, she will drown. Thick skin, indeed!

Hanks was nothing more than an excuse to make poor Bristol unable to cope with the tough world of Hollywood. Bristol, you chose a tough world to live in, even for the sake of a fake reality show. In LaLa Land, the girls are prettier, have fabulous figures, have studied drama, dancing and have college degrees. Some of them will do almost anything to get a staring role in some kind of show. The competition is fierce, and Bristol is no fighter, despite her bragging. Ask your mother's former friend, Rebecca Mansour how tough that town can be. Ask Rebecca how hard it was to get anyone to look at a screen play that she wrote-- how looks in that town really do matter.

The entire premise of Bristol's show is lame. Going to Hollywood to work for a charity is stupid because there are plenty of charities in Alaska that could have used Bristol's Brothers. I hope that they were paid for the film, or else there should be another lawsuit. Bristol has no special talent or ability to warrant her working for a charity, other than to collect clothing, sort it out or package it. She has no skills for any job that would justify driving 3,000 miles with a 17 year old who quit a job and dropped out of school to be on a TV show.

Lame lame lame, that show is a fake, and so is Bristol.

  22. As much as I would like to believe that Mr. Hanks was an innocent bystander who just happened to be in the me place as Bristol, that whole encounter seemed so contrived that it make me think this is just another grifter ploy for ratings by the Palins.
Lifetime, like them or not, is a professional organization and of course they know that on-camera release forms must be signed before they air anyone.
    Smells very fishy to me!
On the topic of Bristol's show, I saw that Radar Online claims that Bristol had asked Levi to be a part of this "un"reality show and Levi declined. Really?
    This also smells very fishy!
When is Levi going to grow a set and stand up to the Palin lies. In one promo, Bristol is crying that Tripp doesn't have a father. Shame on her!
Time to step up to the plate, Levi. How do you think your son will feel about you when you continue to allow Bristol to tear you down in public? Every little boy needs a male figure in his life to look up to - and the ideal situation is that it would be his father, not his pimp of a grandfather or an endless round of anonymous "uncles" going through the revolving door to Bristol's bedroom.
    MAN UP, Levi!

    2. He may not even be Tripp's father; I have thought that for a long time and as time goes on, I get even more convinced. Even the Mercedes angst at not seeing Tripp is getting played too much in the media, and nothing seems to be really getting done behind the scenes. I have witnessed enough custody hearings to know that if Levi really wanted something to happen relative to Tripp and he really had the right, it would have happened already and not necessarily have been broadcast in the news or in the tabloids. This is all such a sham! And everything relative to Palin is a lie and a sham. I have just about given up on the whole truth ever coming out.

THIS is what is quite telling, IMO.

Now, when people break up, there is animosity. Broken hearts, broken dreams, broken trust, blah blah blah.

We have seen Brisdull's animosity toward Levi.

Now, where is LEVI'S "passion" about his son?

I mean, guys fight with their exes about their shared DOG!

...and Levi isn't going to COURT to gain custody of his son?

I can't imagine ANY man not looking at this situation in the MOST basic way and say, "I'm not going to LOSE".

      ...the dog

      ..the house

      ...the car

      Just smells like bullshit.

The thing is, Levi KNOWS that TRIPP is NOT being WELL-PARENTED by Brisdull and her shitty family.

      Levi KNOWS this!

He KNOWS his son's picture is on Facebook for pedophiles, his son is taped and shown on TV, his son is an AFTER THOUGHT for his OWN MOTHER ~ EVEN WHILE BEING FILMED!

Some guys know that their kid will be better off with their moms (maybe dad is an alcoholic/abuser/etc.),

But that is NOT the case with Levi.

Even if Levi is not a fighter,

I can't imagine ANYTHING in the World that would be WORTH fighting for more than one's child.

The bar scene was obviously a set up: we were shown video of Bristol riding a bull and being bucked off while the bar patrons all shout comments at her. Yet the mike just happens to pick up this guy's comment? And Bristol somehow magically not only hears him, but knows exactly who yelled that particular comment? No way in the world. She's a lousy actress, and everything from the way she makes a beeline to him to her badly delivered lines screams "Staged!"

So why is he now suing? Did the producers screw up in getting his permission? Perhaps. This "reality" show has been all over the place and surely has involved various people shooting footage and making appropriate arrangements. At the time this incident was staged and then splashed all over the press, she was supposed to be living with a couple of black guys who were also in on the deal; now we're told she was living in a Beverly Hills mansion with Willow (anyone else find the deliberate echo of the Beverly Hillbillies funny?) The one thing that makes me believe this is legit is that he exposes the lie about when she bought the house and why she moved back to Alaska.

On the other hand, the suit itself could well be a publicity stunt. Is that bar scene the only interesting footage they have? It must be, otherwise why do they keep milking it? Why is the media giving this ridiculous whiner MORE press space?

Filing a frivolous lawsuit for publicity purposes is illegal. I hope someone comes down on all of them hard.

It would seem like he would have a case if they broadcast this without his approval, but I'm surprised they would do so. They could have felt that the taped scene was so valuable to the show they really didn't really care or expect he would sign permission for it to be made public, so they went ahead with it anyways. But it also seems rather stupid on Brisdulls part she would be stupid enough to challenge someone at a bar who's probably has been drinking. And why would they not cut out her homophobic comment to the guy? I would think the comment would hurt her more than help her.

My overall impression is that the scene is unscripted and actually did take place. I also think that the producer of this show is not very professional and would allow something like this to be released to the public without getting his permission first. But, Brisdull's homophobic comment say's a lot about the Palin household and how Sarah feels about gays. Brisdull didn't come to dislike gay's on her own, but was raised in a household that did. I can only wonder how they feel about African-Americans after constantly hearing obvious hatred towards Obama, and Sarah never providing anything other than talking points to back up her statements.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous3:26 PM

They need to inform the public and the poll entities about more facts. The bar is not known as a western bar only, it is respectable gay bar and restaurant. People do drink there and the production staff knew that. Bristol went there with a camera crew. The production co. should run a legit business and when they go on a shoot get the releases signed and do everything production co's do.

Not everyone believes the sweatshirt Bristol chose to wear that night was a random pick. If a person has a public face as a "homophob" (past social media outbursts). Why would you go with a camera crew to a gay bar and wearing gawdy Christian attire? Is that how Christians save souls these days? No, she wore that inappropriately to offend and cause trouble. Or she is a total embecile and she was sent there to make trouble by the sinister friends of her mother that are desparate to stir up controversy for her show.

Hard to believe Lifetime would feature in its advertising an individual whose permission hadn't been obtained. IMO, either this is a set-up to get publicity for Bristol's show, or a set-up to get Lifetime out of its obligation to air it.

If the lawsuit is the real thing, no way would Lifetime ignore it and continue airing the promo as is. Their legal dept. wouldn't let them.

Aside from the accusation against Lifetime (if by some remote chance that is genuine), the lawsuit seems totally frivolous. "Waaah! Bristol Palin asked me if I was a homosexual! I'm suing!"

PLEASE. Grow a pair, bub. YOU called HER mother a whore first. If you can't take the heat get out of the damn bar. (And this comment is being written by a Palin loather of the first magnitude, BTW.)

Another thing, Bristol's buying a house in AK two months prior to going to LA is totally irrelevant to this case. She could have ten houses in AK; doesn't prove she ever intended to live in any of them. They could have been bought as investments, for rentals, etc.

This lawsuit has FAIL written all over it - just like the Palins.

I agree with the other comments-- everything that Bristol does is to create attention for that lame show. There is nothing real about it. She is not a good actress, and there is nothing compelling about her story. Oh, it is such hard work being a single mother living in this beautiful mansion. And people insult my Mommy. I wanna go home, sob sob.

Name the dog, the dog ran away, there's a lawsuit, what will Bristol pull tomorrow? Each little promo video is worse than the last one. When Bristol appeared for an interview with Greta after Tripp was born, Bristol was proud of the fact that she CHOSE to have Tripp, meaning she did not choose to terminate her pregnancy, nor did she allow him to be adopted (as might have happened previously). Well Bristol, you made your choice, now live up to the responsibility of making that choice. Be a good mother to Tripp would mean allowing his father to have some input in his life. Being a good mother means that you don't exploit the poor child by putting him on TV. Willow didn't want to be his baby sitter; that's your job. When you chose to have him, you made a choice that would affect the next 18 years of your life. Grow up! Charity begins at home, and in your "home," your work is taking the best care you can of that little boy. He needs playmates and play groups. You probably need the company of other mothers who actually do have advice that would make it easier to raise your child. Stop saying that taking care of Tripp is such hard work. That's the wrong legacy to leave him. Try loving him instead of exploiting him.

Rmember the tidbits that showed up of them walking in a parking lot of a store and they had to do a retake. There was vid of Tripp pushing his stroller outside the front of the store with his pacifier and throwing somewhat of a tantrum. The Massey Bros & Brisdull sitting at an outside table eating fast food. All the vid tidbits we saw were major amateur.

From my experience as an actor with reality TV (as a professional actor, I admit that I have acted in a few "reality" shows - they are all scripted, BTW, which you know unless you are truly clueless!), actors like Mr. Hanks have been well compensated from day one. He would not have participated - nor would have Bristol - had there not been union scale renumeration. From my experience, it was obvious that the gay bar bull riding scene was scripted - totally set up, and probably with several takes. The money is in the "outtakes," THOSE are what the media should be paying for, in my opinion. They are there, trust me.

You are very right about this. All reality shows are scripted. I worked on one too.
I wondered if he REALLY filed a lawsuit. There must be a way to find out. Wasting the courts time is serious business. My guess is that it will be dropped if there even is a real case.

How interesting that they think this will generate interest in the show. It won't. Nobody cares and serious Christians won't approve of her riding a bull in a gay bar anyhow. This isn't even interesting also too :) boring as hell.

Wait, if this were a publicity stunt, Steven Hanks would have to be in on it. Why would they hire lawyers and make believe they are filing a lawsuit? Is Bristol's show that important that Hanks would involve himself and put his reputation on the line, and have Sarah's bots sending him nasty e-mails, even for money? I don't think so.

It's to renegotiate a deal or real.

I would say that with the negative commentary for this show from conservatives, that Bristol would be wise to stop the publicity attempts, as they tarnish her image even more.

Not sure that the federal court system would look too favorably on wanna be celebrities filing suit for publicity purposes. Can any lawyers here weigh in on this as a stunt?

Strikes me as unethical and wouldn't an attorney risk censure if this was solely a publicity stunt?

Lots of folks have often suggested that Shailey Tripp or even Levi seek the services of celeb attorney Gloria Allred. (And by the way, Shailey did repeatedly state that she tried and was always rudely rebuffed by Allred's office.)

Back to my point, The Daily Beast has an article up about Ms. Allred and does it surprise anyone that she is NOT charming?

Yeah, and he is. He was shown along time ago to be a Dlist actor. Also too, how did he know Bristol, bought a house in alaska two months before thw show started? Palin's keep their real estate deals super secret. This entire lawsuit is nothing but a staged show.

The paperwork on the house has been available for a long time. I don't know how he came across it. That alone is not something the Palins would want to be part of federal court procedings and made more public.

I do hope this will finish them off, at least start the avalanche of exposing how they operate. Including any of Todd Palin's side work.

    2. "Also too, how did he know Bristol, bought a house in alaska two months before thw show started?"

Bristol disclosed her house purchase awhile ago. The property records are public and her deed shows a recorded date of July 29, 2011.

      313 Lake View Dr.
      http://www.matsugov.us/myproperty/mydetail.aspx?pID=79228

We also know that her parents helped her buy the house by giving her a mortgage. And then, in less that two weeks later, they bought the house next door to her.

The online view of both deeds are somewhat hinky with the signature lines cut off. This isn't normal procedure and, once again, we seem to find the Palins receiving special treatment.

Gryphen, Any chance you're interested in investigating why the Palins' property deeds aren't shown in full?

I honestly think it's legitimate, and I hope Mr Hanks prevails. I read the reuter's story earlier today and thought about it for awhile.
After playing the original footage on You Tube and the one on her new show, his face is clearly seen in both and her use of the term "homosexual" WAS clearly hurled as an insult, and intended to be demeaning.

Knowing the Palins from observing them over the years, I'm amazed they didn't get a lawyer nor try to get in front of this to play the victimhood card.
Mr Hanks DID "apologize", but that gave them no right to rehash the incident to make money.

    Sarah's chin looks weird?

Maybe that is where Bristol got the idea of getting a chin implant?

    What else has Sarah done?

Mama wrote a ghost written book
    Mama had a book tour
    Mama got pregnant before marriage
    Mama had multiple lovers
    Mama had a reality show
    Mama is a paid speaker
Mama is a mean tempered high school girl
Mama tries to control the lives of others
    Mama had cosmetic surgery
Mama can't write a sentence on Facebook without a ghost writer
    Mama is a scammer
Mama always has her hands in other people's pockets

They both played basketball in high school
They both owned property in Arizona
They both trade marked their names
    They both have LLC companies
They both go on talk shows
They both own a house and live on Lake Lucille
    They both been on Oprah
    They both been to Haiti
They both went on the same book tour together
They both went to the same Washington Correspondence Dinner after party together
They both are victims of the media
They both have Willow to be their slaves
They both accuse men of wanting them
They both went after the same Tennessee college boy that hacked Sarah's email
They both can name one man they both hate and love with a passion
They both want a man they can't have
They both hate the Johnston family
    They both hate David Letterman
They both think Gay people shouldn't have rights
They are both experts, Bristol is a reproduction and abstinence expert and Sarah is an energy-bakery-finance-gun-hunting-fishing-pipeline-Blood Libel-rifle cross hair sniper-Paul Revere-AIP-Russia-North Korea-Africa-Middle East expert and knows that the Queen of England is the president of England
They both are quiet about the accusations that Todd is a pimp
They both publicly degrade the president of the United States of America
They both went on the wild GOP Wasilla Hill Billies clothes shopping free for all
They both thought Sarah would of been a great vice president
They both knew early that Sarah wasn't running for president but Bristol let that family secret slip out
Bristol likes canvas tents and Sarah likes dorm rooms
    They are both Valley Trash
Bristol won't show Tripp Johnston's birth certificate and Sarah won't show Trig's either
Bristol named her son Tripp and Sarah's husband had a lover-prostitute named Tripp

    Oh shit!

Bristol's life seems to copy Sarah's life so why not get a chin implant like mama has if that is what Sarah did?

The Daily Mail: "Gino Paoletti: January - May 2011 (5 months Tripp had a Daddy)
In January Bristol announced she was 'thrilled' to be dating Alaskan oil pipeline worker Gino Paoletti, who comes from her hometown of Wasilla.
She said he was a 'good guy, a family guy and a Christian' who her parents 'liked a lot'.
But in March he came under fire for his Facebook page, in which he supported homophobic websites and mocked people with Down's Syndrome."

Gino also called Palin the Palins idiots, he saw the first reality f*cked up show. Now she is using him but will not always say his name. Calls him boyfriend. How sad is that? Gino was in the photo for the show and it is said he will be in the series.

'But while Kyle will seemingly have his work cut out to win Mrs Palin's approval, she is said to love her new daughter-in-law, Britta Hanson, who married her son Track last week.
An insider told the Enquirer: 'Sarah gives Britta full credit for straightening out Track after he became addicted to Oxy-Contin and got involved in illegal behaviour'.
Mrs Palin is said to have appealed to Britta, a minister's daughter, to persuade Track - an Army reservist - to clean up his act.
And according to a source close to the family, she hopes the marriage will help her presidential ambitions too.
They said: 'Sarah thinks Track's wholesome wedding was the perfect example of the strong family values that she tries to espouse.'"

That is the wholesome wedding without a marriage license? Sarah didn't even remember how many grandchildren she has on one TV show. She has never publically bothered to show she gives a hoot about the baby girl? Is she still crowing about how proud she is of Track since Britta persuaded him to clean up his act, join the Army and get out of the State. Poor Britta has been working for Sarah and under her influence for years.

      They both hate Levi.

They both won't ask Dr Catherine Baldwin-Johnson to clear up who birthed Trig and confirm or deny if Sarah's tubes were tied after Piper was born?

      From the internet:
"Trig may actually have BEEN born at 7.5 months....but he wasn't born in April '08, and he sure as HELL did not issue forth from the tied, cut, and burned fallopian tubes of Sarah Louise Heath Palin."

My two were in the same school as two of Sarah's at the same time. She volunteered for revolving carpool and bailed every single time. She called one morning saying she'd be unable to drive her planned day the next morning because she'd had "a tubal". I remember her saying it in that whiny fake accent she used to elicit sympathy: "Well, I've had a two-bull". I just rolled my eyes and got someone to fill in.

Two weeks after that when her next shift came up, she called again and this time it had gone from "a two-bull" to "my surgery". "I'm sorry, I can't make it 'cause yaknow I had surgery recently..."
I remember some of the other moms and I joked that when her NEXT shift came up, she would be calling saying "I can't drive due to the recent double AMPUTATION of my tubes..."
