Here is your crazy thought processes of the day. Alaska militia style.

Coleman Barney
Yesterday during the Schaeffer Cox trial, prosecutors were questioning his co-defendant, Coleman Barney, about the reasoning behind why he and fellow militia members walked around heavily armed, seemingly intent on engaging law enforcement officials in a firefight.

Courtesy of Alaska Dispatch:

One issue jurors will likely be asked to think about as closing arguments near is whether Cox and his group sought out or created the conditions that would have yielded the potential for violent conflict. Cox had established rules of engagement for the group, centered on whether government came after him or left him alone. Yet by skipping a court date in a minor weapons case, Cox assured his non-compliance with the law and solidified his status as a fugitive, raising the potential for his arrest.

Coupled with Cox's public displays of disrespect to and defiance of the court system, a climate was brewing that could have become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Prior to skipping a court date, Cox had encouraged supporters to come to other, earlier court hearings in ploys to get attention and intimidate state court judges. Barney has said during these courtroom appearances, Cox had twice taken his antics too far. Telling judges that people wanted to kill them in the middle of the night, and telling Alaska State Troopers that the militia had them "outmanned and outgunned" was too extreme, Barney said. As a result of his growing discomfort, Barney had asked Cox to tone it down. Even so, the impact of Cox's courthouse grandstanding has been difficult for Cox and his men to shake.

During their federal trial this week, when Skrocki asked if Cox was "using the militia to threaten the court system," Barney said "yeah."

Staying with the theme, Skrocki attempted to show jurors that the security details in service to Cox were more than a group of guys exercising their Second Amendment rights to bear arms. These were men who intended to go to great lengths to keep their man safe.

"This would have caused a lot of heartache with law enforcement at any level," Skrocki asked, using his right hand to hold up an AR 15 semi-automatic assault rifle in the courtroom. The weapon, a Valentine's Day gift from his wife, was among those Barney carried during a protective detail for Cox in November 2010. Skrocki's point was, if police or troopers or the FBI came across men carrying such weapons in public, they'd be inclined to check the situation out. And yet, it was a confrontation with law enforcement that Cox feared, and the very scenario that had given way to the prospect of launching the retaliatory 2-4-1 plan.

Barney said he was aware that certain situations required more decorum. A protective detail for Cox outside a Fairbanks courthouse was kept more simple, with maybe nine men armed with handguns, including himself, working to make sure Cox made it safely from the courthouse exit to a waiting car. But when Cox was due for a television appearance, the situation was different.

The television station was on private property, Barney believed. Because of this, he said he didn't think being more heavily armed would cause public distress. To this location he brought side arms, the AR 15 and 180 rounds. For extra "non lethal" defense tactics, he mounted a grenade launcher to the rifle and loaded it with a canister of rubber pellets -- an illegal combination, according to the indictment. Another man rode the wooded perimeter of KJNP, and Lonnie Vernon, similarly armed, worked the entry point of the lot.

Skrocki tried to get Barney to admit he'd been given orders by Cox that night to shoot to kill. But Barney was clear, opening fire on law enforcement was only intended as a last resort. And, a last resort only to be invoked if unidentified people, including undercover agents who failed to identify themselves, showed up and started shooting.

Are we to believe that if law enforcement officials had simply demanded that Barney and his associates put down their weapons that they would have complied? If they were serious about believing that the government had put out a hit on Cox, why would they?

No matter how you look at it this was a scenario fraught with the potential for violence.

So to reiterate Cox had his "bodyguards" walking around carrying assault weapons, in preparation for a conflict with law enforcement, that the walking around with assault weapons would have almost guaranteed to happen. And apparently NONE of these idiots saw this a provocative act, or that from the outside it actually appeared that they were attempting to INSTIGATE a firefight with law enforcement? Seriously?

As I have mentioned before it appears that Schaeffer Cox suffers from extreme paranoia, which just might be the result of a mental imbalance. Yet how he managed to surround himself with so many sycophants that did not seem capable of recognizing that Cox was delusional and who appear to have been willing to murder State Troopers on his behalf, is incredibly troubling to me.

Barney keeps insisting that he did not agree with Cox, and that he thought some of what he did was over the top, but he did not seem to show any signs of refusing an order to shoot law enforcement officials if Cox told him they were in imminent danger.

The idea that these heavily armed individuals were running around Alaska following the orders of a mad man, should be a wake up call to ALL Alaskans to stop and take a good hard look at the AIP, the various Alaska militias, and even the NEW Republican party in this state. Because if you think this kind of thinking is contained to just this handful of suspects you are sadly misinformed.

What is it about Alaska that attracts such crazy people? As an average non-violent citizen, I would NOT feel safe with these crazy militia types, armed and dangerous! These people are thugs and criminals. I hope they are convicted and taken out of circulation. It would be a warning to other crazies not to go this route.

It isn't only Alaska, sadly. Look up the NPR film, The Fire Next TIme from the show Point of View. It's about Kalispell, Montana, and a Rush Limpballs wannabe, John Stokes.

Sorry, Gryphen, but if you don't know the difference between "automatic" and "Semi-automatic" you shouldn't be commenting on a comment! As for there being little left of a bunny after being hit by one, try to understand that like the M-16, the AR-15 is a .223 caliber weapon! That's called a .22, people! And small game hunters have been using that caliber for decades. And in reality, one of the most popular weapons for the small game hunter in Alaska was the Remington Nylon 66, which was a .22 Long Rifle cartridge! The primary difference between the regular .22 rifle and the AR-15 (or the M-16) is A.) velocity and B.) weight of bullet!

Anon 3:37, Gryphen was correct when he described the AR-15 as a semi automatic. AR-15 are only built as semi automatics. M-16's, however, are automatics, but are only sold to the military, and Federal and State governmental agencies. If someone wants to own a M-16, they first must have a machine gun license. Also, that "only" difference you described between a 22 caliber long rifle and a 223 being weight and velocity, makes a lot of difference in the lethality of a 223. A semi-accurate comparison between 22 and 223, would be the difference between a 38 and a 357.

Or in other words, Gryphen is correct.

      Delete
    9. Anon 3:37, so, essentially if a AR-15 "hunter" misses his prey the higher velocity heavier bullet continues on into the adjoining field or forest and hits a deer/cow/hiker. Swell.

Better hope that AR-15 "hunter" is a better shot than Sarah Palin.

Sorry, Durham. If you read his original comment ("Automatic assault weapons to take out a bunny. How manly."), you will see what I was commenting on. And, yes, there is a power difference between a .22 and a .223, but they are still .22's! If they were talking about using the AK-47 for hunting bunnies I would have to agree with the comments being made about their use, even if they WERE caustic, insulting comments aimed at portraying the individuals as people with questionable sexual abilities - which in itself is not something most people liked when it was done by Bristol, so why should it be tolerated when anyone else says it?

Gryphen, are you a total vegetarian? Because if you are NOT, don't talk about those who hunt as being vicious and unmanly and the like. You need to study the shit our poor "raised" animals go through if you want to argue against cruelty!
And for KaJo: the deadly range of even a .22 long rifle is nearly a mile (and there have been recorded instances of people being killed at that range by them). The vast majority of hunters are far more safe than what most people are being convinced they are. Propaganda at work.

Sorry anon - if you don't understand the difference effect of a .22 from your old Remington varmint rifle and a .223 round from an AR-15 then you don't know shit about weapons. I've seen up close and personal what a .223 does to the human body and it isn't some neat, clean little hole like a .22 does. If a .223 hit a rabbit I'm guessing you'd be left to pick up scraps of meat and guts instead of throwing the .22 shot rabbit into your game bag for supper.

There are people like this in every state of the union; here they are less likely to be hiding, as Alaska, in the past, was always known for tolerance of individual opinions (if you were white, preferably male). Much of the Militia movement's philosophy comes out of Idaho, some from Montana and a good bit from Wyoming. They also echo the talking points of the christian dominionists groups who are prevalent in the Pacific Northwest.

As a real Alaskan that owns no firearms, and neither hunts nor fishes except at the local meat market and fish market, the only statement I can make about Mr. Coleman Barney in that photo, is nice spats! Some find spats to be an anachronistic fashion statement of days gone by, but I certainly hope that due to Mr. Barney's very prominently displayed photo whilst wearing such fashionable spats that those garments might possibly be brought back into the realm of current high fashion; also the poofy pants, those are a must have as well!

  8. Raging insanity that anywhere except in a war-zone, people could not only own but appear in public with weapons like that. It's not just Alaska though - I remember that some crazy showed up in (I think) Arizona with a pistol and an assault rifle where President Obama was speaking. The right-wing cowards should be locked up. Tolerance of their actions is almost as insane as the actions.

  14. I think, as children, many of us liked to play cowboys or combat games, building forts, making weapons out of popsicle sticks and rubber bands, fashioning closet rejects into 'uniforms', snagging sheets and blankets from Mom's laundry basket to humanize our humble little outposts. Then what happened?? Most of us grew up, developed more mature social skills within our pier groups, learned to respect, if not agree, with the opinions and lifestyles of others and attempted to educate ourselves to the ways of the world while trying to provide a decent living for our families.

Sadly there will always be a few who are not able to 'cross over the bridge' and assimilate into polite and lawful society. For many of these folks there are militia groups ready and willing to keep those youthful warring instincts alive. Uniforms, guns, ammo, paranoia, secret meetings and hatred on a stick 24/7 !!! Whoopee! And if you don't have the $$$ to buy 'real' patriot style boots, they can tell poor guys like Barney how to fashion a pretty decent pair from a couple plastic trash bags. Again, Mom's cupboard findings come to the rescue for the wannabee warriors.

There is no doubt in my mind that everything these people are saying is bullshit. They obviously fancied themselves to be hero/martyrs and were looking to go out in a hail of gunfire "for the Republic".

OF COURSE they walked around covered in weaponry that would draw police attention. They may be psychotic, but they're not STUPID (well, not THAT stupid, anyway). They knew full well they were, at some point, going to provoke an excuse to secure their place in history as "patriots". This was clearly the entire point of their whole existence.

But few of these cosplay douchetards actually have the balls to go through with it. Thus, these imbeciles are on trial instead of dead and memorialized on glitter & macaroni shrines at neo-nazi hq (aka: Billy Joe Bubba Bob's Mom's basement).

The very worst thing you could do to these sick losers is to lock them in a cage for the rest of their lives, forever separated from their visions of martyrdom and glory.

But at least their wives are still free so someone can keep the dust off of their Timothy McVeigh shrines...

I hate open carry laws. It's so easy to feel intimidated by a person carrying an assault rifle, much less a whole group of them.

There is a case here in MI where an 18-yr old was arrested while carrying a rifle in the downtown area of a "tony" suburb (near to where Willard Romney went to school). I'm afraid I don't remember what he was charged with, but it was legal under MI law for him to carry that gun. Yesterday there was a city council meeting at which a bunch of gun-carrying supporters showed up, not to say much (a few gave comments), but mostly to show solidarity. It just came off as intimidating again. I wish these people would keep their high-powered firearms at home.

My husband has a concealed carry permit, which is marginally better, but I won't let him carry when he's out with me. I enjoy target shooting with him, but couldn't they have a variety of guns at the range to rent, so you don't have them at home? I would be very happy if all guns (except the military)went away.

I'm not sure if it is just me but I like our gun laws in Canada. I don't feel that any untrained citizen should be able to just walk around freely and non shilante sporting a holster with a gun, intimidating people in a parade.

"Well, people cannot be locked up just for being crazy. If the jury decides that they were planning to kill someone unprovoked, then they should be locked up. Otherwise they are entitled to their own opinions."

The alleged existence of a list of potential victims such as judges and members of law enforcement (and if I remember correctly if "necessary" their families including children) does away with any need to worry about whether the Cox crew would be "provoked" or unprovoked".

There is plenty of information available about Cox and what he said over the years.

Do I think Cox was capable of issuing his kill order? Yes.

Do I think there were many occasions when he had at least two armed followers who would have followed his orders? Yes.

They are getting their day in court, something his victims would not have gotten if Cox and his militia had enacted what they were planning and preparing for.
