Mitt Romney reads statement addressing the tragic shooting in Colorado. Update!

I am not simply being a partisan asshole here, but after listening to Romney talk about the shooting I was left with the feeling that he simply had ZERO emotional connection to what had happened.

In fact he almost seemed annoyed by the fact that he had to speak about it, and appeared to be reading the poorly written statement with feigned emotion almost like a bad actor auditioning for a part in the local high school play. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, about his delivery screams "phony" to me.

But you go ahead and watch it and then judge for yourself.

I have to say that for me personally, just based on THIS reaction alone, I would NEVER vote for Mitt Romney in a million years. The man simply comes across as lacking in humanity.

If you want a comparison, here is President Obama's statement.

While watching the President remember that this was during the time when reports were just coming in, and he was standing in front of a group that had come to hear a rousing political speech.  I think the President handled himself very well, and DEFINITELY felt the emotion of this terrible tragedy.

Update: Of course as poor a job as Romney did in addressing this terrible incident, at least he can take some solace in the fact that he was not ignorant enough to have tweeted THIS just hours before the shooting.

You know if ONLY James Holmes had brought spoons, instead of guns, into that packed theater, just imagine how many lives would have been spared.

Leave it to Sarah Palin to ALWAYS be on the wrong side of EVERY horrible tragedy.

He'd better keep Ann off the national outlets - she assuredly didn't help him in in this last go around.

The Romneys really believe they are insulated from everything with their money. They can have the best medical care for Ann, they can skirt taxes, they can carve up businesses...just once it would be interesting to see how they would handle a GENUINE tragedy where they are NOT insulated, where they are struggling for THEIR survival...on whatever level. Karma has a huge blow in store for them, that's for sure.

    Good to know, Gryphen:

June fundraising: Romney's advantage not as big as it first appeared

Overall in June, Mitt Romney outraised President Obama by $35 million, $106 million to $71 million. But as I explained on Wednesday, those numbers only tell part of the story.

Today, we learned that just $33 million of Romney's $106 million haul went directly to his campaign. The remaining $73 million went to the RNC and its affiliated committees. Why did so much more money go to the RNC? Well, the maximum donation to the Romney Victory Fund is $75,000—but only $5,000 of that goes to Romney's campaign. The remaining $70,000 goes to the RNC and its affiliated committees.

Because Romney's fundraising is so top heavy, most of his money goes to the RNC. That's important to understand because the party money is less useful than the campaign money. Every dollar in excess of $21 million that goes to the party cannot be legally spent in coordination with the campaign. It must be spent through an independent expenditure committee. Assuming Romney and the RNC follow the law, that will make message coordination very difficult. Moreover, while Romney (as a candidate) qualifies for discounted ad rates, the independent expenditure committee does not.

President Obama faces the same rules, but his fundraising is less top heavy than Romney's. In fact, he actually raised more money for his campaign—$46 million—than Romney did. His campaign also has far more cash in the bank: $97.5 million to Romney's $22.5 million. The president raised $25 million for the DNC and its own independent effort, and their cash on hand probably trails Romney's, but again, that money is less valuable on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

That's what I thought also...A rehearsal for his presidential persona. Gryphen is right, he is an bad actor.

I looked into what guns were like when the 2nd amendment was enacted in 1791. I think the guns that were sold then should be what is allowed to be owned now (I know unrealistic). Then we wouldn't have these mass shootings. Can't we ban automatic assault weapons?

We also need more psychiatrists/mental health professionals especially trained (for high schools and colleges) to look for this type of person or mental illness. It seems like we have a lot of angry young people, to say the least.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous5:50 PM

I agree. There is NO reason to own or use assault weapons. Unless you intend to kill. Ban them.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous5:52 AM

They used to be banned, from 1994 to 2004 but the ban expired and was never renewed. The NRA had 10 years to bribe and threaten congress critters to make sure it would die.
Now we have a militarized police force (thanks again to the NRA and weapons manufacturers ensuring their bottom line) to cop with the heavily armed drug cartels in the USA. ANYONE can get an assault weapon and it is only marginally less effective as a killing tool than a machine gun.

I had seen the President live this morning. This was my first look at Mitt's response. I imagine that at some point earlier a staff person said to the President, "Why don't we get the speech writers to pull together something for you ...." and the President put up his hand and said "Not necessary...I got this."

At the Romney campaign, staff offered and Mitt accepted the offer for help. So they drafted him some bland generic shit and put it in a three ring binder and sent him to the podium.

He delivered the words with all the passion, concern and audience connection that he'd have if he had been reading the past year's financial report of Bain Capital at the Annual Shareholder's Meeting.

Delivery was a bit off, but it wasn't that bad for a speech someone prepared for him. My problem was the Christian biblical/religious references. The President held a moment of silence, where religious faith doesn't have to enter into the equation - just pause and think, no matter what your beliefs other than you feel terrible for the victims and their families and that things like this keep happening.

  25. I have a bit of experience with Mitt's version of "sympathy."

I live in an area with a high Mormon population. My husband was raised LDS, but left the church at the age of 16 (as soon as his parents would let him). His family remained in the church, and as his parents aged and eventually died, I had the rather uncomfortable experience of being accosted by the "stake presidents" of the local LDS church and offered condolences on multiple occasions, even within minutes of my father in law's death. I was stunned by the lack of compassion these guys displayed - they said the right things, but they seemed completely devoid of emotion or empathy. They knew neither my husband nor I were LDS, but they offered their favorite religious platitudes anyway and even seemed to pretend that we were in their little cult. And just for good measure, they sent missionaries to our house for a few months after each death just in case a teenager could rope us in. (not likely, we're atheists).

Anyway, my point is, Mitt was one of these guys. He was a stake pres. For a long time in Boston, and I'm sure he has done the comforting routine thousands of times. The fact is, he doesn't give a shit about anyone else.

I think Mitt Romney is a sociopath. Look up the 7 characteristics! And I, for one, am fucking sick to death of sociopaths/psychopaths right now! Why do we let these people carry guns, and for fuck's sake, WHY DO WE LET THEM RUN FOR OFFICE?

Mitt Romney is Sarah Palin 2012. They are both psychopaths, they just manifest it differently. The only thing Mitt has over Sarah Palin is that he was born into a life of privilege - admittedly a HUGE advantage. He is no more qualified to be president than Sarah was to be vice-president. And really, he's not that much smarter than her either. Mitt has an MBA from Harvard? That means nothing. So did George W. Bush and look where that got us.

Started his own company (Bain)? - that means nothing either. When all the money, contacts and lobbyists are just handed to you any one of us could run a successful company. It doesn't take much in the way of smarts to run a company when you don't have to take into consideration any of the consequences like ruining peoples lives. It's easy to run a company when you don't have a conscience. Romney runs his business like W ran his wars - lots of "little people" die along the way but it makes for huge profits for you and your friends. If it was 1860, Romney would have been one hell of a successful plantation owner.

Like Sarah, his speeches are full of flag-waving and patriotic buzzwords but says nothing of substance. Just what is his economic plan? Immigration plan? His alternative to the much-hated Affordable Care Act? Even he doesn't know. All he has is just more anti-Obama rhetoric.

Did anyone watch Romney's 5 sons on Conan's show? I don't think his kids realize how much they gave away about their father. They tried to portray him as fun-loving and likes to play pranks, but really it exposes him as the passive-aggressive asshole that he is. One of his favorite "pranks" is to ask someone to smell something and then shove their face into it (like Piper and the cake). But no one is allowed to "prank" him though. One of his sons did once and he said he suffered retribution for months. And you should listen to them laugh - they sound just like the Mormon family on the South Park Mormon episode. It was eerie.

And if you look at any family photos none of the children are smiling. Not his adult kids - they all conformed long ago and now have their own planet waiting for them - I mean the grandchildren. No smiles on family get togethers - boat rides, ice cream and sitting on grandparents laps - no smiles to be seen. Not in any candid photos, not even in the family photos. None of the children look happy.

This man is no better than Sarah. In fact, I dare say that Sarah has actually accomplished more in life. Sarah may not have as much but she "worked it" to get where she is while Mitt Romney simply had everything handed to him. And now, he feels he should have the presidency handed to him, too.

All Sarah really had going for her was her charisma. All Mitt has going for him is his privilege. Sarah couldn't charm her way into the vice-presidency but Mitt Romney definitely has enough money to buy his way into the White House. I am truly afraid. What have we, as a nation, become?

Now some may take comfort in these ways, but I find it eerily strange that man places assault weapons in the hands of humans (as entertainment/sport?) and then turns around and asks for comfort from God.
Kinda like asking for your money back at the circus when the elephant gets loose and squashes the spectators.

i am a chiropractic consultant and i have a very active Facebook page. A lot of my chiros are very republican and were posting stuff saying that if there were easier concealed carry laws, this wouldn't have happened because someone with a concealed weapon could have stopped this massacre. Um, WHAT???
    A. it is like take cash advances to pay your credit card bill. More guns aren't going to thwart more violence.
    B. This was in a dark theatre. Could you imagine if several people had concealed carry? There were reports saying the movie-goers thought the gun shots were in the movie.. so explain to me how more concealed weapons would have helped.
Their logic is just completely fucked up. no other word for it.

In every speech, a leader understands that s/he must engage the audience enough so that the message gets through (even if some in the audience reject the message). In every speech, a pastor (or a CEO) can assume the audience is already engaged and wants to hear a message that makes them feel superior and comfortable.

Mitt is pastor, President Obama is a leader.

I've begun to think that the gun lovers in the US whose immediate reaction to any event like the Aurora massacre is to blame those who are not gun lovers (as in President Obama did it to pass gun control legislation and other nutty reactions, etc.) are really guilt ridden. They clearly belong to the "those who protest too much" category. Maybe if they faced reality instead of running from it they would agree that, while gun ownership is legally allowed, controls over that ownership must be made. Liability insurance would be a good start. Then banning ownership of weapons that have nothing to do with target shooting, skeet shooting or normal hunting.

In addition, it seems to me that there is a real disconnect in the minds of gun lovers in this country. Many are conservative Republicans who support fundamentalist churches and who love their NRA. Have none of them ever contemplated the significance of the commandment: "Thou shalt not kill"? You cannot justify wanton weapon ownership with God's own commandment - you simply cannot.

So, I think that the gun lovers among us need to think about some things and 1) recognize and publicly admit that there must be some limits on gun/weapon ownership in a civil society, and 2) recognize that they cannot rationalize their supposedly sincere religious beliefs which have as any basis the Ten Commandments with uncontrolled gun/weapon ownership.

Atheist group rebukes Obama over prayer for Batman shooting victims

“May the Lord bring them comfort and healing in hard days to come,” President Obama said at the end of his speech today, referring to the victims of the Batman shooting in Colorado and their families. By doing so, he “bent the rules” against government establishing a religion, according to the Center for Secular Humanism.

“I think it’s a little unfortunate,” CSH director Tom Flynn told The Washington Examiner. “Even in a situation like this, [when] he leads a public prayer to a deity that it pretty recognizably the Christian God, much as you can understand the emotional context of it, he’s still sending to some degree a message of exclusion to other religions who don’t call their god “Lord” and to non-religious Americans.”

“By the very act of praying, that’s a message of exclusion,” he continued. “If I’m a public official, I think I’m going to look around in the morning and conclude that, ‘hey, this religion thing is just too hot to handle, I should stay away from it in my official capacity.’”

I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Some people are better speakers than others, and I think in this case, and in general, Romney is not as good of a speaker than Obama. I believe a lot of the reasons people don't see Romney as being as sincere as Obama is just political prejudices. Think about it and be honest with yourself. Pat's brother responded that Pat wasn't in a better place, he was just f***ing dead. It's almost as if it's an automatic reaction - as soon as he starts to read a speech, he puts on that fake, smirky smile, except when he's saying hateful things about the President. I guess there are only two emotions that he's been able to pretend to feel - fake smile or anger.

Both, of course, are completely inappropriate in this situation and he doesn't seem to know how to realistically portray caring and compassion. He's certainly demonstrated that he doesn't feel those two emotions and they're a little more challenging to pretend.

Romney: The Man without A Past

Mitt Romney has an identity problem. He is running for president by making promises about America's future, but as a man who is largely without a past. Not only has Romney renounced many of his previous positions--on abortion, immigration, gun control, climate change, and the individual mandate he once championed as Massachusetts governor. He also refuses to divulge many details about what even he has said is his main qualification for the White House in a faltering economy: his successful career in "private equity" from 1984 to 1999 (or thereabouts).

What is it about the private equity world that Romney doesn't appear eager to bring up? As I explain in an article in the current issue of National Journal, "Mystery Man," Romney was basically what used to be known as a "barbarian at the gate." The term "private equity" sounds respectable, but it is a euphemism for the old leveraged buyout deals we remember from the 1980s, the era of corporate raiders like T. Boone Pickens and Henry Kravis. After junk-bond king Michael Milken, who funded a lot of those takeovers, went to jail, the industry decided to rename itself in order to remove the taint.

This is Mitt Romney's true world.

Heartbreaking And Inspirational: Tearful Witness Begs Viewers To Remember ‘Life Can Be A Beautiful Thing’

Throughout the day today, television viewers across the world have watched dozens of interviews of witnesses to last night’s massacre in Colorado. These innocent people have done their best to describe an unthinkable horror, many while displaying various signs of shock and trauma. One witness, a young man named Chris Ramos who desperately tried to protect his younger sister while watching the man next to him get shot…

Ramos gave viewers this terrible image:

“And the sad part is with this evil, this death, it had no bound. It had no shame. It did not care about age. It did not care about sex. It didn’t care about anything. Little girls were shot and little boys were shot. Elderly people were shot and teenagers were shot and people still in high school were shot. He did not care. Death did not care at all. About age, sex or anything. It was all a massacre.”

..."But I know that there is evil in the world. I’m not naive about that. There is evil in the world but there is good. The one thing that I want people to know and the main message that I want to get across is not to forget that. To remember the good times of life and the beautiful things. And don’t just remember the horrible things about life because life can be a beautiful thing. We just have to be strong and overcome the evilness.

Like the movie of Batman. The true message of it? Standing up against corruption, against evil, against death. Standing up. Normal citizens just standing up to what is right. It’s ironic that that happened but that is basically the message that the Batman movies give out. Standing up for something that is right and ‘Even though the times get hard, the darkness is always darkest before the dawn.’ The second movie, that is what it said. It is exactly like this.”

I believe Mitt Romney is as sincere as he knows how to be...I speak as someone who has truly been "broken." I was widowed at 40 with three teenagers at home and was a stay at home mom, with no way to support myself or my children. I would have well meaning "Christians" speak to me of having a door shutting and a window opening with true heart felt sorrow and of "God not giving me more than I could bear." And yet, those very words made me feel as that I was a baby seal being clubbed to its death. When someone has not had to TRULY walk a path that is painful and horrific, they don't “get” their platitudes are of little to no comfort. I don't think Mr. Romney means to be unfeeling, he just has not had a burden (or several) that leaves one to question everything they know or thought they knew. Money is a great insulator but until you have been so shattered in your faith, and your beliefs that you can barely inhale the next breath you just can't get "it." I think he's as sincere as he knows how to be, but has never had his world rocked to its very foundation. He's been a lucky man and he may never know how lucky...numerous folks don't recognize their good fortune. The good thing is if you've ever been "broken" you come to know it is only, in the end, that kindness and compassion are all that truly all that matter. I am sorry the lessons I've learned where so hard but grateful I know what I know now. I am not sure what caused President Obama to learn those same lessons, but I can recognize the cloak of them in him.

The spiritual irony is that misfortune can and does temper people the way constant good fortune cannot. A person who has known real suffering and has experience the dark night of the soul has been transformed by it and is likely to be a better, more compassionate human being as a result. In that light, Romney is a truly pitiful being, whereas the President and the First Lady have been truly blessed.

The Day Before Colorado Massacre Rush Limbaugh Reveled In His Batman Conspiracy Glory

Coincidence? A day before the Dark Knight Rises massacre in Colorado, Rush Limbaugh was living it up in his Batman conspiracy theory glory.

Let’s put something to bed before it ever gets started. I am absolutely not blaming Rush Limbaugh for the tragedy in Colorado.

However, when I found out about the shooting this morning, I had two thoughts. The Joker, and Limbaugh’s conspiracy theory that he had been pushing all week.

I thought about The Joker because only a true sociopath, especially the way he was played by Heath Ledger, could go into a dark theater and shoot people, and I thought about Rush Limbaugh because of his Batman conspiracy theory.

...I have no idea whether James Holmes ever heard Rush Limbaugh’s comments. It is unknown whether or not Holmes was even political, but there is something unnerving about the idea that days after Fox News described Dark Knight Rises fans as, “ugly and threatening,” 71 people who were watching the movie’s premiere got shot.

Rush Limbaugh claimed that the use of the character Bane and the movie’s release date were all a part of an Obama plot to sink Mitt Romney. The right’s reaction has been the same as it always is when mass shooting occur. First, they scream about the Second Amendment, and then they try to explain to us how their words don’t matter.

The problem is that their words do matter. They are the pollution in the cesspool that our national dialogue has become. The right managed to take an innocent event like a summer blockbuster and politicize it to such a degree that when a horrible tragedy occurred, the question in the back of many minds was I wonder if the shooter listened to Limbaugh?

If people like Limbaugh didn’t spend their days preaching hate and division this question would never be thought of, but many conservatives seem to have taken the lead of their media and forgotten that they can be conservative, without being filled with rage and hate for those who disagree with them.

When hate and anger are their movement’s fuel, they shouldn’t be surprised that a psychological connection is made between their behavior and the hate filled act of the shooter in Colorado. This thought may not be fair, but it has been earned.

Words matter and if the right wants people to stop suspecting them every time there is a mass shooting, they should try toning down the hate.

I would love to hear what Rush has to say about the shooting, but I can’t. Rush Limbaugh took the day off.

They remind me of the weird couple from the move "Neighbors" w/Belushi.

ALL the main hosts today had substitutes on their shows - Limbaugh, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Ed and Lawrence. They turned their shows over to someone else because of the shootings in Colorado. It's on every channel - every show - over and over again - reporting the exact same thing!

It was a horrible situation there is no doubt, but all TV channels take each newsworthy event and report on it constantly for a day or two and then the subject is dropped and something else takes over the news cycle. One good result was the fact we didn't have to listen to the constant crap as to the campaign betwen Mittens Romney and President Obama. That was a godsend!!!

I turned off TV and the radio and selected personal CD music for the rest of my day.

I tuned back into TV - as to the news - just a bit ago and the reports are still exactly the same as to the Colorado shooting - all these hours later! So much of what is on TV today only needs to be viewed for about an hour and then you can absolutely tune it out until the next day for another one hour of viewing!

I don't know why advertisers use TV channels to push their products?! I'm getting more and more disgusted as to the media coverage and find I'm 'tuning out' more than I'm 'tuning in' on just about everything.

We need to surround ourselves with positive things in our daily lives.

    1. I find I am tuning out more. While I care deeply about the coming election, I find myself detaching from the process as I can't cope with the simple minded baloney on TV. They boil everything down to a minute or two at most. Rarely do they ever go in depth on any topic. And yet we need more in depth explanation of complicated topics than ever before.

And, I don't think the real questions are asked by the supposed journalists we have today. A statement can be made and they don't follow up with the right question. Questions, I'd ask if I were doing the interview, for crying out loud!

I, too, care for our country, but see it going horribly down hill w/the crap that we hear about daily.

People/Americans need to be paying attention to this upcoming election on all levels of government - national, state and local.

He is definitely reading someone else's words, and he is DEFINITELY suppressing a smile.

Why is he trying not to smile? Because ol' Mitt has realized that this tragedy will take the spotlight off the Bain scandal, and buy him some time to sort out his taxes and hide some more money overseas. I think Mitt is giggling to himself that he got lucky. What a sick f**k.

I have instinctive dislike of like Romney. I think he would be a disaster of a president. But I have to give him credit for taking the high road. His remarks may have been wooden but they were dignified. In other words at least he didn't shit all over himself like Louie Gohmert. Or use the tragedy as an opportunity to play the victim and bilk the rubes out of more money like $arah did after Tuscon.

    That is all.

President Obama speaks to everyone in a way they can relate. When I first saw the news of this Tragedy, the first thing that came to mind was my kids going to the movies, and he spoke directly to every parent or caring person's empathy in that speech. He was calm, relaxed and yet moved, and it showed.

Thurston Howell Romney read his statement word for word, in a bland, monotone manner. I've seen people look up a phone number with more passion!

Thanks for showcasing the difference, which person shows real leadership qualities? empathy?
