President Obama, placing the needs of people over politics.

Stephanie Miller of Sandusky, Ohio cries on the shoulder of President Obama at a campaign event at Washington Park in Sandusky, Ohio. Miller’s sister died of cancer and said that Obama’s healthcare plan would have given her better treatment options.

What people sometimes forget is that President Obama risked virtually ALL of the political capital he gained after his election on getting the health care bill passed.

He is clearly not an ignorant man, and he had to know that he was in danger of losing any hope he might have had of enjoying a second term. But he did it anyhow.

Personally I think he did it because he felt it was perhaps the most important piece of legislation that he could pass during his Presidency, regardless of how damaging it might be to his chances for reelection. In other words he did not do it for political reasons, he did it for humanitarian reasons.

I think his reasons are more basic: He is a decent man who refuses to believe that morality, religion, and tortured ideologies are one in the same.

I agree. His mother died from cancer and who knows what kind of problems she had to get treatment. He's a decent kind man who really listens to people.

His mother was denied cover from her disability insurance because of pre-exist condition. She was being partially cover by her primary insurance and was paying 800+ a month for her treatment. President Obama and FL Michelle probably were putting out a lot of money to pay his mother medical bill, living expense and traveling back and forth to HI. He know the pain that woman was feeling.

  2. This brought tears to my eyes. As a 14 yr+ Stage IV Breast Cancer Warrior, I can relate. I could fill pages with what my insurance companies did to me (or should I say "did not do for me") over the years. Thank you President Obama.

  3. I am visiting family in rural Iowa this week. Evening programming is running the hateful "Obama lied about healthcare tax, Romney will repeal it on day one " campaign ads two or three times in a half hour show . That's the power of campaign funds in the billions. People may start believing just because they hear it repeated ad nauseum.

If you believe in this President, back it up with some $$$. Don't let thugs buy this election!

I think that President Obama went for health care because it was the RIGHT thing to do.

And I understand that there are people that have no clue what "the right thing" means beyond "money in my pocket." These people have no concept of the ideas of "compassion" or "empathy." Too bad for them.

It is an emotional thing. How anyone can be against people getting a chance at decent health care is beyond me. Everyone loves someone who has a health issue. To have to watch a loved one die because of lack of ability to join the insurance pool because of a pre-existing condition is criminal and heartbreaking.

    Bravo President Obama!

Bless you President Obama. 65+ years in the making and the republicans said they didn't have enough time to think about it, they needed more time. Just think of all the people that they condemned to die too soon because of lack of health care all those years.

However, the "north of 49th" observer is dumber than a sack of hammers - must be a 'bot stateside, no Canadian would show disrespect towards President Obama. As a Canadian, I personally have tremendous admiration and respect for the President. The one thing that truly sickens me is the poisonous vitriol directed at him by uneducated morons such as $arah and her ilk. The educated electorate must stand up to the GOP morons and support President Obama's initiatives; Obama/Biden - it's a lock in November!

  11. Can you imagine RMoney embracing someone from Massachusetts like Obama did today? Can't even imagine he availed himself to the voters in Mass. long enough for them to thank him for Romneycare.

Obama connects to the people. He watched his mother die of cancer and had to deal with insurance companies on her behalf. He has not forgotten.

Crystal Sage, that was exactly my first thought--could not imagine Mitt Romney embracing anyone, and also could not imagine anyone (other than another millionaire) having any REASON to embrace Mitt Romney. Everything Mitt does benefits himself first.

  14. Anonymous6:54 PM

I benefit from Romneycare every day. Please know that it's not perfect, but it is a huge relief for millions of people. Romney didn't hang around long enough to get thanks for what he did, and now he disowns it. So, no hugs for him.
But now 99% of Massachusetts residents have health care.
Think about what you would do if you lost your job -- and health care. Think about whether you could afford health care on your own. Think about what would happen if you tried to buy health insurance, but you'd had any kind of health trouble in the past that would disallow you. Think about not having health coverage for your children. Think about going bankrupt if you were in a car accident or needed heart surgery or prohibitively expensive medications.
Then think about universal health care. We need to make it single-payer. In the meantime, remember who brought it to you -- and give your votes and your money to the Democratic Party.

I agree completely with you that he risked, and still maybe putting his second term in jeopardy. But what he did for the country will not be appreciated for several years. At the same time, Republican's will also be viewed in a negative light for their obstructionism in Congress for his whole term. I do hope he gets re-elected and have a second term which will hopefully will give freedom to do what he wants to get done.

This kind of legislation clearly demonstrates the motivation behind the two candidates quest for the Presidency.

Barack Obama, while certainly appreciating the power and prestige that goes along with the office, seems to truly want to 'serve the people' and make this a better, safer and more prosperous country for every one of its citizens.

Mitt Romney's only goal is to wield the power of the Presidency, thus achieving what his father could not, and take care of the 1% he has always been a part of.

There is no question in my mind which of these men I want in the White House for the next four years.

  20. The bill is not perfect but it's a start. An important one. Remember the race talk Obama gave in the campaign? A big risk, according to his advisors. Impressed the hell out of me. There too he said things are not what they should be, but they are better than in the 1950s, better than 100 yrs before that.

I support our president 100%. I admire him. I laugh at any comparison of him with the GOP klown kar kandidates, incl Mitt. But I am scared that the GOPs dirty tricks, lies, and voter fraud will result in a GOP win.

I watched his speeches in Ohio and Pennsylvania and I was truly impressed. The optics of Romney on Vacation vs Our President out there with the people were polar opposites.
President Obama's risking everything to get ACA passed will go down in history. It's not perfect, it needs some tweaking, but seeing this woman embrace the President shows how much this truly means.
I survived breast cancer and fighting the insurance company afterwards was an ordeal I can relate to.
Thanks for this post. Health Care is a human right, not a privilege.

The difference between having Barack Obama and Mitt Romney leading our country is the difference between having a warm, compassionate human being or a cold, calculating robot in command. Think about it. What about Mitt is spontaneous or genuine or, most importantly, empathetic? Nothing! He has to make up tedious little stories about his interactions with the common man because he really does not do that. He has to talk about the perfect height of trees in Michigan and the quality of the baked goods offered him by regular folks (how really RUDE he was!) and his obsession with guessing people's ages- who cares? He is a DUD, plain and simple... but a DANGEROUS one. He is dangerous because he is one of those people who does not know what he does not know. He is fed lines by his campaign that sound as if they come from tipsy frat boys. He IS really good at two things, though: MAKING THE BIG BUCKS AND CHANGING HIS MIND TODAY ABOUT WHAT HE SAID YESTERDAY.

Ann Romney making the media circuit with:

"Early on we heard what their strategy was. It was kill Romney," she said, adding a message to Obama: "Not when I’m next to him you better not."

What is she suggesting with her comment? Is she afraid to be sitting next to her husband? Or is she suggesting that she is more equipped than her husband to defend him?

Ann Romney is truly not a very likable person is she.

She is just as petty and paranoid as her husband and whines about everything. Her attitude that her husband is entitled to be president is so foul. What the hell makes him entitled? That he has money and power because of it? That he has destroyed people's lives with his business enterprises? What? What is it that she thinks her pathologically lying husband can offer the country but hate and platitudes, and more money in the pocket of the rich oligarchy?

She's a poor excuse for a possible first lady and I shudder to think of the possibility existing of her, with stupid 'tough girl' nonsense being anywhere near the White House.

And for the record, I think it is totally unacceptable for a candidate for president to have ANY money stored outside of the US, it's downright unsupportive of our economy and flatly wrong. He should be required to bring ALL of it back into the US, if he is allowed to be president.

  27. President Obama watched his own mother battle with her insurance company for coverage while she struggled with cancer. That had a powerful influence on him.

That kind of stress when you are so ill is cruel & un-necessary in a country such as ours. No one should have to fight a for-profit entity even if they are healthy.

I'm hoping to see this grow into Medicare for all!
