Rachel Maddow drills down on the MItt Romney Bain Capital confusion.

I actually sort of sat back and watched this Bain Capital thing play out.

I have been watching reports from MSNBC, CNN, and yes even Fox, to determine if the Democrats went too far in their assessment that Romney is completely lying concerning his role at Bain during this crucial 2000 to 2002 period.  I have also read reports from ALL over, many with completely different takes on the story, about who is, and is not, lying about it.

I KNEW that Rachel would do the very best synopsis of the story, and of course she did.

In the end there seems to be no doubt that Mitt Romeny is a lying scumbag, and that the CENTRAL reason that he tells America they should elect him in 2012 over President Obama is based on a false premise about his business acumen.

Here is a little something that Andrew Sullivan also discovered RIGHT IN Bain's 1999 press release:

It was hidden in plain sight as a Bain press release in July 1999. Here's how it described Romney's position at Bain when he says he had no responsibility whatever, despite remaining CEO, Chairman and Sole Owner as far as forms filed with SEC testify:

Bain Capital CEO W. Mitt Romney, currently on a part-time leave of absence to head the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee for the 2002 Games said ... So Bain now contradicts Romney.

And one of the men mentioned in the press release, Marc Wolpow, described his relationship with Romney when Romney was on a previous part time leave in 1994 when running for Senate (while remaining CEO of Bain):

“I reported directly to Mitt Romney . . . You can’t be CEO of Bain Capital and say, `I really don’t know what my guys were doing,’” Mr. Wolpow said of Mr. Romney role at the company during his leave.

Is anybody else getting a Sarah Palin vibe off of Mittens right about now?  I mean didn't he JUST launch a campaign calling President Obama a liar for bringing this Bain Capital connection up, and saying that he was actually there longer than he claimed he was there? Yet at the very same time he was calling the President a liar, he was lying his ass off!

Personally I think THAT is the takeaway here. The man is a chronic liar.  He is essentially Sarah Palin in magic underwear!

And just like Trig's never produced birth certificate, Romney has NO intention of ever providing more of his tax returns which would, according to him,  prove he is NOT lying. This from Business Insider:

First of all, we've complied with the law. The law requires us to put out a full financial disclosure. That I've done. And then, in addition to that, I've already put out one year of tax returns. We'll put out the next year of tax returns as soon as the accountants have that ready. And that's what we're going to put out.

I know there will always be calls for more. People always want to get more. And, you know, we're putting out what is required plus more that is not required. And those are the two years that people are going to have. And that's all that's necessary for people to understand something about my finances. And, look, if people believe this should be a campaign about attacking one another on a personal basis and go back to the kinds of attacks that were suggested in some campaigns in the past, I don't want to go there.

Look, just like Palin with Trig's birth certificate, the ONLY reason Romney would not be willing to provide the tax returns, which he had no problem providing to John McCain in 2008, is that he KNOWS they will prove that the Obama campaign is telling the truth and that HE is lying.

Period!

Mittens and his advisors are playing minor league ball with a team of heavy hitting professionals. It doesn't matter now if he releases 20 years worth of tax returns...there are other ways of getting enough information about Romneys Bain years to create a complete narrative about him that will make him unelectable.

Already an ex Bain dude will be going on Chris Hayes show tomorrow to talk about Mittens, more SEC filing will be published, more press releases found, and then the inevitable email leaks will surface from anonymous sources. If Mitt thinks he put this issue to rest last night, he needs to fire his entire campaign staff and start over. I have seen the Obama is lying ads already up on tee vee here, and they only create more confusion about the issue.

Mitt Romney just wrote his political obituary last night.

Romney's tax returns have been an issue and a distraction for his campaign since the primaries. Why would anyone avoid putting this to rest unless doing so would raise even more significant issues?!

I don't see any other conclusion than that his refusal to release these tax returns like so many other candidates before him is an admission that they contain information which would do even more damage to his campaign.

If he gets away with this, I will be stunned.

Romney the Robber Baron will magnanimously permit not just one but TWO tax returns for our reading pleasure.

In 2008 he offered years of tax returns to John McCain in hopes of being the vice-presidential candidate.

Unfortunately, for him and the nation, John chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Why, only four years later when he is running for president, does Romney adamantly feel no need to provide those same multiple tax returns? What is he hiding? This does not bode well for open and honest disclosure.

You nailed it Gryphen ---yes, i've been getting a Palin vibe in two ways --1) not providing the available documentary evidence that he claims supports his statements; 2)lying about easily refuted documented facts (such as in Andrew Sullivan's "The Odd Lies of Sarah Palin).

In Palin's case i think it's becuz she's a combination of dumb and unbalanced. In Romney's i think it's becuz he thinks we're dumb and unbalanced, and won't care.

  7. Mitt has been trained in the Palin school of "poor me". He is asking for an apology from the President? Now who, other than the Palins, ask for apologies from anyone who dares to criticize - in particular President Obama. Is it Sarah or Bristol who has been sitting next to the phone for a couple of years waiting for that apology?

Sarah Palin started the nonsense of a politician who cannot handle criticism. If she had to cope with 1% of what the President has handled without blinking - over the past 4 years - she would be curled up under the bed.

And, just to add, also, too - it seems that when you lie, being called out on said lies - instantly starts those requests for apologies. Mitt knows there is no apology coming, even GOP pundits are telling him this is a REAL campaign - Sarah on the other hand was/is so delusional, she just keeps on complaining.

Rachel is one hell of a reporter, and I hope she keeps after this story. The whole truth about The Great Mittsby needs to be told because the real truth about his candidacy is that he would be a truly horrible president to lead this country.

His candidacy is driven by only one thing: his deeply ingrained love of money and power, and his goal to get more of it for himself no matter who or what it hurts.

    Just a few hours ago, Talking Points Memo (TPM) released evidence that we have been aware of for 11 1/2 years. That Mitt Romney "WAS" CEO of Bain Capital in 2001. Their source is non other than the irrefutable public docket records of the SEC. In the TPM wonderful article entitled "No, Romney Didn’t Leave Bain in 1999" it states;

"The gist of the disagreement comes down to this: There’s no question that numerous public filings and some contemporaneous press references say Romney was still running things at Bain after 1999. But his campaign insists that whatever securities filings may have said, in practice, he was so busy running the 2002 Winter Olympics that he actually had no role at Bain after early 1999. That’s possible in theory. But there’s no evidence for it besides self-interested claims by Romney. And there’s plenty of documentary evidence to the contrary. After all, what you tell the SEC is really supposed to be true".

Romney can get red in the face defending his honor. He can hold his breath until he turns blue waiting for an apology. But he can't deny what he wrote in black and white. Well, he can try... but it won't work.
Looking at the database holding documents relating to Romney's tenure at Bain shocked me. I was shocked to realize this was the same database that introduced me to the web twenty years ago.

In 1992, a software application called Lynx was released for beta testing. By today's standards it wasn't very exciting. It was a crummy little text-based browser for something called the World-Wide Web. But twenty years ago, when 28.8 modems were the norm, it was revolutionary. For the first time in history, individual investors had the tools they needed to search the EDGAR database on their own FOR FREE.

EDGAR has matured over the last twenty years. But the output is still basically the same. It is flat text. No fancy graphics. No cute animations. Just boring legal documents companies file with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. That's the government agency responsible for regulating the financial industry.

As you would expect, this is dry stuff. But it is searchable. THAT makes it interesting. For example -- if you enter the search string "Romney Bain" and limit your search to the time frame 2000 and 2012, you know what you find?

You don't have to guess. I can show you. Voila......

Building on what Rachel said, the real question that Romney should be asked is this: how much were you actually paid during the years between 1999-2002? You'll notice that it just says "over $100,000" - it could have been a million. Could have been ten million. The media should dog this guy and all his surrogates with that question until they get an answer.

Mitt Romney is almost entirely a living breathing myth. He's not smart, he's not even smarter than George W. Bush, or even Dan Quayle, was. He's not a good businessman, he's just another guy who contributed to why Wall Street is a simmering toxic mess. He's not a saavy leader, he does what he's told and makes it look like whatever he was doing was his idea. He's not bold, he's fundamentally one of the biggest cowards in the GOP. He's not an idea driven individual, he's an empty suit who has learned from Newt Gingrich to be 'what a stupid person thinks a smart guy sounds like'.

Now we find out that he's a serial (rather than a cynical/tactical) liar, a sadly fragile egomaniac, and that on top of everything else... he's all not good at all under pressure.

The operative word here is "something."

But we are not owed "something." We're owed everything about his finances. His very own father showed what a politician should do, releasing eight -- or twelve -- years of his tax returns when he ran in the 1968 primaries.

For Mitt Romney to claim that all anyone needs to know is two years of his finances, when he's been hell-bent on running for President since at least 2002 shows that he has a great deal that he's hiding, and he thinks we can be hoodwinked and lied to by getting only "something."

The reason he lied about his time at Bain is clear. The Romney/Bain Vulture Capitalist model is based on a smash-and-grab strategy that sucks out all the assets of a faltering company, immediately pays huge bonuses to the Bain management, defunds pension plans at the expense of the tax payer and basically takes no risk with their own money. This immoral business model illustrates why he is unfit to be the leader of this country. Along with his off-shore bank accounts Romney wants to brush part of his life aside.

  30. Anonymous8:04 AM

Let's see. Mitt wanted to run for governor of Massachusetts, yet had been living out of state in Utah where he'd taken a property tax deduction given to *legal residents* of Utah. His Utah residency would have disqualified him for running for governor. It was *essential* that his Bain status be portrayed as a leave of absence, not a separation, so he could make the case he had always planned to return to MA after the Olympics were over. As it stands, he had to refile his tax returns to not claim that Utah resident deduction and go before the ballot commission in MA. Now that Bain's activity during his leave of absence is called into question, he claims he retired from Bain in February of 1999. While he might get some benefit of the doubt for his name on certain entities created prior to his leaving, completely new entities bearing his name? Being listed as CEO on SEC filings? If he's retired, he can't be the CEO. It's just that simple. Either he has operating control, or he doesn't. SEC filings require a high degree of precision, and it's impossible to believe that Bain's attorneys handling compliance would have let this slide.

The idea that this doesn't matter is ludicrous. Mitt desperately needs to be retired in February 1999 for the purposes of this election, just as he desperately needed to be on a leave of absence when he ran for Governor of MA.

Mitt can't claim that he isn't responsible for what Bain did post February 1999. That's what's important. Bain investing in Stericycle, a company that disposes of remains from abortions? Mitt will tell you that happened after his retirement. You think evangelicals will care if he had "significant involvement" in the Stericycle investment?

Mitt can't simultaneously have been on a leave of absence which would let him run for Governor of MA *and* retired which would inoculate him from Bain's business decisions post-February 1999 while running for president in 2012. These two things can't exist simultaneously. So, which was the truth? What Mitt claimed to be Governor of MA, or what he's claiming now in his effort to be president?

Romney lied. Whenever a Democrat lies, no matter how small and unimportant the lie, conservatives jump all over it and talk about "character" and use it as a reason why said Democrat is unfit to lead our country. I'm just sayin'... and this lie has much bigger consequences than anything Liz Warren said or didn't say about her ethnicity, anything Bill Clinton said about having an affair with an intern, or anything Obama... wait, when again has Obama told a major lie with serious consequences? Anyone to tries to answer this (with something like "Obama said he would lower unemployment below 8%"): an unfulfilled promise is not the same thing as a lie. A lie is an intentional misrepresentation of facts.

Anyway, this particular lie means Mitt is avoiding responsibility for major job losses at a company he was running, and yet his campaign (during the rare times when he stops disparaging Obama for a few minutes and actually talks about himself and why he should be President) is centered around how he's an experienced businessman and will run the country like he ran his business! Maybe we'll finally wake up and remember that the USA is not a business, and isn't SUPPOSED to be run like one. We're here to ensure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for ALL our citizens, not just the rich ones. Mitt, I sure hope you are toast this November, and I sure hope this story contributes to your toastiness.

    Romney is a born liar.

Perhaps, if he signed fraudulent notices that Bain subsequently submitted to the SEC, he'll soon be a convicted one as well.

Here's hoping for truth, justice and the American way to triumph over Fraud Romney and The Bain Way of Doing Business --- lie to thy customer; cheat thy customer; abuse thy customer; fire thy workers; slash thy workers' health care coverage and that of their families; outsource thy factories and their jobs to Third World countries; and pay those in sweat houses pennies a day while making millions in blood-stained profits.

I think the problem for Romney is that the SEC filings are accurate, which means 2012 Romney has a lot of explaining to do about Bain's investments 1999-2002. Mitt's problem is having to explain how being listed as CEO in a 2001 or 2002 filing squares with his claim that he had nothing to do with the operations of the company. Bain says Mitt retired in 1999. My guess is that there is a lot of nervousness on the upper floors of the Pru today, as Ropes and Gray is trying to figure out if Bain has thrown them under the bus.

    Then from BriANUS comes this:
"Great: Thanks, techno, for this key information on one of the greatest American Presidents, even if he is now mostly passed over in SILENCE ...

    "SILENT CAL" COOLIDGE!!"

Have to wonder what the doofus's would think of this. Because Coolidge's tax policy sure sounds a lot like President Obama's of keeping tax liability on the richest folks who can afford it.

Coolidge's taxation policy was that of his Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon: taxes should be lower and fewer people should have to pay them.[115] Congress agreed, and the taxes were reduced in Coolidge's term.[115] In addition to these tax cuts, Coolidge proposed reductions in federal expenditures and retiring some of the federal debt.[115] Coolidge's ideas were shared by the Republicans in Congress, and in 1924 Congress passed the Revenue Act of 1924, which reduced income tax rates and eliminated all income taxation for some two million people.[115] They reduced taxes again by passing the Revenue Acts of 1926 and 1928, all the while continuing to keep spending down so as to reduce the overall federal debt.[116] By 1927, only the richest 2% of taxpayers paid any federal income tax.[116] Although federal spending remained flat during Coolidge's administration, allowing one-fourth of the federal debt to be retired, state and local governments saw considerable growth, surpassing the federal budget in 1927

Mr. Romney's idea of propriety is vastly different than most of ours, as taught by our mothers and fathers. Mr. Romney hides behind arcane rules, twists of the intent and meaning of laws, up to and including hiding money overseas in order to have to pay less in taxes. Then, when the heat level gets too hot, he breaks down and goes on a media junket to tell us that we should only hold him responsible for half the things that any other rich human would be accountable for.

Really? We are not stupid. We are not devoid of ethics. For all of his money, which may well have been ill-gotten, Mr. Romney doesn't have an ounce of common sense or decency. While many of us 98 percenters don't hold three degrees from Harvard, we know right from wrong and we can sure smell a rat. Mitt Romney's a big, fat, smelly rat.

Romney's defense this afternoon seemed less like a denial and more like a temper tantrum that the press and the Obama campaign are trying to subject him to scrutiny. The whole thing is rather obtuse and perhaps not too important, but Romney's assertions don't pass the smell test, which is very important. Bain capital has been his albatross in the past, and it may be again.

Romney has proved to be rather cavalier with the truth, a flip flopper on positions, and short on transparency. It will take a lot of Citizens United ads and some real bad news on the economy to erase Obama's leads in the swing state polls. I can't envision him beating Obama in the debates.

He told lies when CEO as Bain did its leave-them-after-squeezing-them to companies while outsourcing their jobs to other countries.

But Romney has everything to hide.

Everything about him - from the ever-present smirk on his face to his limitless self-righteousness - reeks of falsehood. When he speaks fact, it's with exaggeration to glorify himself or to degrade Obama.

The new questions about Mitt Romney’s sworn version of his 1999 departure from Bain Capital—which seems to contradict statements in SEC filings, testimony given to prove his Massachusetts residency, and corporate annual reports—are causing his campaign such a headache that someone in Romneyland was moved to float Condi Rice’s veep prospects last night as a diversion. The renewed focus on Bain, as I wrote yesterday, vindicates the Obama team’s decision to press forward with its criticisms of Romney’s tenure year despite the much-ballyhooed warnings of the mayor of the 68th biggest city in the country.

When you go back over the explanations the Romney campaign used to beat back Obama/Priorities USA attacks, you see them fumbling the 1999/2002 distinction like a retired NFL-er with busted knees. In late May, for example, Ed Gillespie (a Romney adviser and surrogate) gave Romney credit for all the jobs created by Bain over its entire history -- not stopping in 1999, not even stopping in 2002. Every time Romney's been hit over something that happened after February 1999, it claimed more definitively than it could prove that he had nothing to do with that stuff.

This is a truly bizarre scandal. At base, we're seeing a candidate get shamed because he took a (paid) leave of absence in order to successfully turn around the Olympics. But the way he described that decision in his 2006 book Turnaround made it clear -- he kept up some Bain Capital ties. "When I talked to my partners at Bain Capital," he wrote, "I opined that it wouldn't make sense for me to come back to the company at the end of my tenture at SLOC as I had following my [1994] campaign." They disagreed and came to a different arrangement -- not as much control as he'd retained in 1994, but not zero influence.

If only the campaign had explained this clearly. The reason that Romney's having trouble escaping this language trap is that it was built and baited by hasty "war room" responses.

Ah, the Bane of Mr. Romney's (capital) existence, an old cash cow that won't stop mooing, no matter how far offshore it's been parked. Now he's calling more attention to it by demanding Mr. Obama apologize for calling attention to it. And the tax return thing--OY! The next shoe to drop, I predict, will be Mr. Romney firing his campaign staff. He's getting lousy advice.

In his long-standing hard-pressed ambitious quest for the white house Romney´s had to kowtow to a radicalized GOP, reversing a wide spectrum of his personal views on key domestic matters to accommodate an extreme right-ideology agenda - repeal Obamacare, no abortions, return to reaganism, deregulate environmental controls and gun control regulations, endorse union busting, no new taxes pledge, stop TARP, and dismantle a host of essential govt support programs (e.g. HUD, Planned Parenthood). As a consequence he has quite appropriately earned the reputation as a "flip-flopper", a charge he´s constantly having to defend against Obama.

However, blithely reversing stands on key domestic issues willy nilly is one thing, but frankly far more serious is Romney´s proclivity for lying. He lies repeatedly and unashamedly. It doesn´t bother him either when he´s caught. He lies about himself, the president, gov´t policy and fiscal matters. Somehow his election organization has determined that he gains more by lying than not lying. Saying for example that when Obama took office the economy was in recession, and that he made it worse and longer, even though entirely false, they figure it still gets traction amongst voters. This is the reprehensible campaign calculus the Romney election team whole-heartedly embraces.

So... which was it? A "part-time leave of absence' or did he "retire" from Bain? Both Mittens and Bain have referred to it both ways, even while signing SEC documents as president, CEO, sole owner, etc.

And which was it... did he leave Bain completely for Utah and the Olympic committee, or - as he claimed when challenged about Massachusetts residency during the 2002 governor's race - he really still worked for Bain and attended various board of directors meetings at Bain companies?

Is he qualified for the presidency because he know how to "create jobs" or was he in fact fully involved in Bain when it outsourced jobs overseas (and in 1998 made millions on a company whose business model relied on exactly such outsourcing), pillaged the assets and sucked so much cash from companies that they went bankrupt and/or fired hundreds of workers, and in general practiced the most predatory, destructive economic scavenging for decades.

Mittens truly is the embodiment of the political rot within the GOP - say anything, no lie too outrageous, no projection too extreme - just win at all costs.

I this country elects this man after all that's coming to light, heaven help us.

He's Drowning Not Waving: A Roundup

Today was another big day of Bain-blogging. Here, aided by new info from HuffPo, we cornered the Romney campaign for being unable to quell two major concerns: why he made a six figure salary for three years while claiming to have no active involvement in Bain and why he told the SEC in 2001 that he remained the CEO. Here we brought more bloggers into the inquiry and asked pro-Romney Catholics if they were comfortable with a candidate who had invested in a company that disposed of dead fetuses. Here and here we butted heads with WaPo fact-checker Glenn Kessler over his continued support for Romney's version of events. Here we did the same with Factcheck.org. Here we featured Dish readers with legal expertise and here we highlighted a reader with especially wise words. Late in the day, we took stock of the situation in light of new damning evidence and reacted to Romney's vehement but vacuous words against Obama.

Yesterday in Bain coverage, the Dish first examined the Boston Globe report calling into question when Romney resigned from Bain Capital; we wondered whether the SEC filings would constitute a felony; we countered the Romney campaign's initial response; we considered the latest reporting from Fortune; we checked in with the WaPo's fact-checker; and a Dish reader with legal expertise helped us raise more questions.

“Generally, when a businessman is the chairman, CEO, and, in this case, sole stockholder, he’s accountable for the business and affairs of that company,” said Karmel, who is currently a professor at Brooklyn Law School.

Mitt Romney is locked in a pitched fight over whether he left Bain Capital in 1999, when he took a job running the Olympics, or stayed involved in the firm over the next several years. Mitt is running the same theme he did in Mass, in Bain and now to the people of America, lie to get in, Improve his stakes and earnings and then run and let everything crumble without taking responsibility! It is part of His Mormon background, he knows no other way! Plus he is still running in the shadow of his father except that as Rick Perry said he is still a vulture capitalist!

He cannot be honest because his whole life has been built and trained on how to be deceptive! From his lies about his humble beginnings where he said no one gave anything to him! The GOP/TP know it and that is why they will not tell the truth, watch as the lies and deception get bolder and more Racial as they use Ralph Reed's and Karl Rove Racial and well tested tactics with their base and those who are still caught in the 60's mindset! More truth comes out about Willard and his antics, we are only seeing the beginning!

Right now, I believe the ONLY reason the SEC hasn't ordered him to explain things is his position as the apparent Republican candidate for President. If they DID call him to testify, then he would scream bloody murder that the Obama Administration was ordering the government to scuttle him!

Personally, I am going to just sit back and watch his campaign self-destruct. You know SOMEONE is going to keep pushing on this, just like they did with Watergate! It's just too big for someone NOT to!

I've viewed all the coverage on this subject - enjoying Rachel Maddow the most - and think Romney provided his additional facts and statements which are already being proven incorrect/lies!

Have to admit that every Mormon male I've met during my lifetime has turned out to consistently lie! (Both personally and in business.) I'm a senior now, retired, and if you mention "Mormon" to me, I go on the elert!!!

For Romney to blame President Obama for bringing this subject forward (Bain) cracks me up. It's OK if he brings the crud forward (re: Gingrich - primary race), but it's NOT if someone does it to him?

I do not think this matter (Bain) will go away - as he is hoping it will. And, I do not think Mittens will be elected!! He is one creepy guy!

He said he will release his 2011 returns (which will be a total of two), but watch - I'll bet they come out just prior to the election (November) so as not to allow much time for their in depth review.

The guy seems like a sly fox to me and I know I don't want him serving as the leader of our country. He likes war too and has Bush/Cheney advisors surrounding him which should really scare the hell out of everyone!

Is it just me, or did the clip of the debate imply that the rape and pillage of Ampad occurred while Rommey was running the Olympics? I don't understand why neither Rachel nor Shannon clarified that it occurred in '94, during Romney's previous "leave of absence" from Bain.

I think this a very important point that should not be overlooked. It shows a pattern of Romney denying any responsibility for business practices of Bain that turn off voters.

Early Thursday afternoon, I did a google search on "Romney Bain" from '99 to '02. The first page of hits consisted entirely of news stories about Romney claiming to have been on leave of absence during the takeover of Ampad. A few hours later, I did the same search, and saw nothing regarding Ampad on the first page. So I did a search on "Romney Ampad" for this time period, and it returned 6 matches (it now returns 8); none from any major news source (I wouldn't count the Phoenix; if memory serves, it used to be free and contained pages of ads for "masseuses"). On Thursday, a match on "Romney Ampad" with no time constraints returned 104K matches; it now returns about 96K.

Rachel has reported on the Ampad story recently, so maybe she assumed her viewers are already aware of the timeline. But I think bears repeating that Romney wants voters to believe that Bain Capital only conducted business that hurts America during both his leaves of absence.

All of this talk about Mitt Romney's lying and not a single reporter has brought up "Lying for the Lord." It's like they're afraid to touch it, but yet anyone who knows Mormonism's dark side knows about it. If you don't, Google it. It explains everything. Right now, Mitt is the Mormon Church. Anything bad that happens to him, happens to the Mormon Church.

I watched a portion of CBS evening news a couple hours ago, and I must say that I was stunned to see the network refuting the lies that Romney was spreading over the airwaves on yesterday when he embarked on his "I'm trying to save face" media tour. I hope more Americans realize that he is a liar, and that if he were POTUS, he would not have the character and integrity to admit when he had made a mistake and accept responsibility for it. This is the same man, who when he first went to work for Bain, had a secion in his contract that stated that if anything he was involved with went wrong, he'd not be blamed for any of it.

Just also read the NEW August issue of "Vanity Fair"-'Where the Money Lives'(pg.86)-an article on Mitt's offshore accounts and his $102 MILLION IRA
Something financially creative must have been done w/ all the caps/restrictions on IRAS for ordinary folks that would make that kind of astronomical return!CRAZY!

  93. "Given the precedent set by past five Presidents of releasing multi-year tax returns why is Romney making an exception?"

Because he has a lot to hide, apparently.

He's the only one that knows what's in there, and apparently he's made the judgement that he's better off having us suspect the worst, rather than us knowing whats in there, which apparently in his mind is worse than anything we're likely to imagine.

    Possibilities include:

    (1) He ended up with 120 million in his 401K by the trick of agreeing with Bain to grossly undervalue the market value of his stock, then a few years later have the stock get unvalued to the stratosphere.

    (2) He participated in the tax avoidance amnesty program of a few years back, avoiding major tax penalties or prosecution.

    (3) Any one or more of the other borderline legal but very bad smelling tax dodges-- "in-kind" trades, "no-risk" trades, no-risk write-offs, the list is almost endless.

And BTW he HASNT even released all of his 2010 return, he very conveniently left off the foreign investments and deposits form. Very convenient.

And his argument that it would be "bothersome" to collect the tax data is a crock too-- he supposedly collected 23 years of the stuff to show to McCain in 2008.

  94. There are at least 12 reasons why Mitt Romney would not make a good president. Here's John F. Ince's list. What's yours?

1 • He neither understands nor represents most Americans. The man lacks empathy for those who have not had all the benefits he has had in life. His presidency would be deeply polarizing. One can easily image his election as president would generate new waves of social unrest and violence. He clearly represents the 1% and the 99% will not tolerate policies that exacerbate the growing divisions between rich and poor.

2 • His job creation claims are inflated and unrealistic. Mitt Romney's professional career was based on a very specific task: buying and selling companies for profit. He wants people to think that this qualifies him to be a job creator. With the exception of his investment in Staples and a few other early venture capital deals, his jobs creation claims are mostly chimera. He takes credit for creating jobs, when he was only an investor in those companies, not an executive. In practice, he predominantly used his power as an investor to eliminate jobs and shift other jobs overseas, all in the interest of making profits.

3 • He does not have a sound fiscal plan. Extrapolating from the projections Romney has offered for increased defense spending and tax cuts, his policies would blow a hole in the Federal budget, further eroding investors faith in the government's ability to get its fiscal house in order.

    ReplyDelete
  95. 4 • He has little respect for the natural environment, nor a commitment to protect and preserve it for future generations. He blindly subscribes to Republican views that climate change is not scientifically proven. He gives no indication of any desire to develop alternative sources of energy that can mitigate the man made sources of pollutants. Instead he supports the rollback of environmental regulations all but giving companies a green light to pollute the environment and waste vital natural resources.

5 • He has lived a cloistered and privileged life and today has a very narrow view of the world. From the Cranbrook School to Brigham Young University, to Harvard Business School to Bain Capital, it's difficult to imagine anyone who has been less exposed to the lives and conditions under which most Americans live. The covenants of his Mormon faith are extremely rigid, restrictive and unrealistic. His devotion to his faith is admirable, but his inability to step beyond the confines of that religion suggest that he would have difficulty reconciling who he is with who others are in an increasingly diverse world.

6 • His worldview is rooted in intolerance. He has a very narrow view of the world. America today is a diverse nation with many different racial groups, faiths, all in need of respect. The bully incident at his prep school and his aggressive corporate behavior buying and selling companies at Bain Capital suggest someone who has little desire help those who are different, less fortunate and in weaker position than him.

  96. 7 • He does not fully understand the transformative power of technological change. Mitt has no professional technical training. Most of the companies he invested in at Bain were low tech. His expertise is finance: specifically buying and selling companies. All this suggests someone who will pay lip service to the tech sector, but won't fully grasp the potential for transforming the economy and culture through advancing technology.

8 • His is temperamentally unfit for the presidency. He is peevish, controlling and less than transparent. He has a rigid worldview that revolves around what is best for himself and a small circle of those who support him.

9 • He lacks direct foreign policy experience. His four years as Governor of Massachusetts do not give him sufficient knowledge or expertise to effectively deal with an increasingly complex world. On the job learners nearly always make blunders, sometimes blunders so large that they create huge problems for the U. S..

    ReplyDelete
  97. 10 • He lacks integrity and honesty. His fudging of issues is a sign that he feels he can head fake his way though difficult debates. His statement that he does not remember the prep school bully incident is implausible. His evasiveness over release of tax forms and embellishment of his accomplishments are all red flags. His decisions as an executive at Bain Capital were not rooted in ethical behavior. The man is simply not forthright enough to earn the trust of the American people.

11 • He has no commitment to women or equal rights. There is little in his public statements or record to suggest he feels any responsibility for advancing the interests of women and minorities.

12 • He lacks sufficient charisma and personality to be a strong leader. The country needs someone to lead forcefully and inspire citizens to tackle problems that threaten the diminishment of American stature on the world stage. Romney's robotic and reptilian personality fails to connect, leaving people feeling that Romney is in the game only for himself, rather than in it for the good of all.

  98. Here are the top 10 comments about Bain from Romney’s Republican rivals:

    1. “The idea that you’ve got private equity companies that come in and take companies apart so they can make profits and have people lose their jobs, that’s not what the Republican Party’s about.” — Rick Perry [New York Times, 1/12/12]

    2. “The Bain model is to go in at a very low price, borrow an immense amount of money, pay Bain an immense amount of money and leave. I’ll let you decide if that’s really good capitalism. I think that’s exploitation.” — Newt Gingrich [New York Times, 1/17/12]

    3. “Instead of trying to work with them to try to find a way to keep the jobs and to get them back on their feet, it’s all about how much money can we make, how quick can we make it, and then get out of town and find the next carcass to feed upon” — Rick Perry [National Journal, 1/10/12]

    4. “We find it pretty hard to justify rich people figuring out clever legal ways to loot a company, leaving behind 1,700 families without a job.” — Newt Gingrich [Globe and Mail, 1/9/12]

    5. “Now, I have no doubt Mitt Romney was worried about pink slips — whether he was going to have enough of them to hand out because his company, Bain Capital, of all the jobs that they killed” — Rick Perry [New York Times, 1/9/12]

    6) “He claims he created 100,000 jobs. The Washington Post, two days ago, reported in their fact check column that he gets three Pinocchios. Now, a Pinocchio is what you get from The Post if you’re not telling the truth.” — Newt Gingrich [1/13/12, NBC News]

    7. “There is something inherently wrong when getting rich off failure and sticking it to someone else is how you do your business, and I happen to think that’s indefensible” — Rick Perry [National Journal, 1/10/12]

    8. “If Governor Romney would like to give back all the money he’s earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years, then I would be glad to then listen to him” — Newt Gingrich [Mediaite, 12/14/11]

    9. “If you’re a victim of Bain Capital’s downsizing, it’s the ultimate insult for Mitt Romney to come to South Carolina and tell you he feels your pain, because he caused it.” — Rick Perry [New York Times, 1/8/12]

    10. “They’re vultures that sitting out there on the tree limb waiting for the company to get sick and then they swoop in, they eat the carcass. They leave with that and they leave the skeleton” — Rick Perry [National Journal, 1/10/12]

Just last night, Newt Gingrich defended his attacks, saying “I think there are things you can legitimately look at in Bain Capital. I think there are things you can legitimately look at in anybody’s record, including Mitt Romney’s record.”

  99. President Barack Obama is keeping up a drumbeat of skepticism over Mitt Romney's insistence — displayed in a blitz of TV interviews — that he stepped down from his private equity firm years earlier than federal records indicate.

Obama planned another day of campaigning in Virginia on Saturday, a state he won in 2008 but before that last supported a Democratic presidential nominee in 1964. Advisers said he would remind voters of the discrepancies between Securities and Exchange Commission filings and Romney's recollection of his role at the Boston-based firm.

His re-election campaign released an ad that repeated its allegation that Romney's Bain Capital shipped American jobs to China and Mexico; that Romney has personal wealth in investments in Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands; and that as governor of Massachusetts, he outsourced state jobs to India.

"Mitt Romney's not the solution. He's the problem," Obama's latest ad says as it plays video of Romney awkwardly singing "America the Beautiful."

The ad was set to run in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The ad, targeting Romney's vast personal wealth, comes as Democrats — and some Republicans — call for Romney to release tax returns going back several years. Romney has said anew that he won't go beyond releasing his 2010 tax records and, before the election, his 2011 taxes.

"You can never satisfy the opposition research team of the Obama organization," Romney told CBS on Friday. In the same round of interviews in which he defended his account of his role at Bain, Romney said Obama owed him an apology for an aide's suggestion that the Security and Exchange Commission filings, if false, could bring a felony charge.

"This is simply beneath the dignity of the presidency of the United States," Romney told ABC.

It wasn't just Obama, though, pushing the presumptive Republican nominee to put the issue of his tax returns and wealth to rest.

"There is no whining in politics," chided John Weaver, a veteran Republican strategist. "Stop demanding an apology, release your tax returns."

  100. ROMNEY ON TRACK TO LOSE ELECTION
Romney’s financial manipulations have, in the last 48 hours, exploded from mysterious shouldering embers into a political bonfire that could consume his entire campaign.
Romney is calling President Obama a liar and Obama is continuing his call for Romney to release full information about his financial manipulations and more than one year of tax returns.
Articles in the Washington Post and Boston Globe have probed and continue to probe into Romney’s convoluted finances and his years as CEO and owner of Bain Capital. Romney has called for retraction of these widely quoted articles without success.
For a Rachel Maddow interview with the Boston Globe writer who probed Romney’s SEC reports click here: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/the-rachel-maddow-... .
For a broader discussion of Romney’s financial manipulations on Morning Joe click here: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/morning-joe/481735... .
Either Mitt Romney was "sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president" of Bain Capital from 1999-2002, when all sorts of ugly outsourcing and vulture fund activities were taking place, or he was just listed as "sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president" on the company's documents, which means he was simply a figurehead collecting cash generated by said ugly outsourcing and vulture fund activities.
There appears to be more than ample multiple evidence that Romney is not telling the truth about completely leaving Bain after 1999. If you want to read all the details:
    1. Click here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/12/mitt... ;

And these articles on Romney/Bain only scratch the surface. After the Boston Globe article on Thursday the Internet lit up like a Christmas tree as everyone with access seemed to have something to report.

Of course the Obama campaign wasted no time getting out TV ads on the subject. One of the most recent has Romney singing “God Bless America” while the graphics pound him for his financial manipulations. Click here:http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/14... . Voters in the swing states are getting their first glimpse behind the mask of Romney’s polished campaign performance.

This all brings back Richard Nixon’s famous statement,“I am not a crook.”

The problem for Romney is that it is impossible for him to win an election campaign based on whether or not he is a potential criminal who has lied on legally required reports. Every day the media probes deeper into the Romney financial paper trail and reveals more and more conflicts between Romney’s personally signed reports and his recorded campaign statements is a day closer to his political defeat. If the present political bonfire doesn’t die down soon the GOP may decide at its late August convention to throw Romney under the bus.
It wasn't just Obama, though, pushing the presumptive Republican nominee to put the issue of his tax returns and wealth to rest.

"There is no whining in politics," chided John Weaver, a veteran Republican strategist. "Stop demanding an apology, release your tax returns."
