MSNBC's Alex Wagner discusses the GOP's "Palin Problem."

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
I love Jonathon Capehart on this topic: "The Republican party doesn't need to have Sarah Palin, not just take her marbles and go home and be angry, they don't her to take her marbles and sit in her at home studio in Alaska and blast the hell out of Republicans and the Republican candidate from her studio there in Alaska on Fox News."

Alex Wagner was not the ONLY MSNBC pundit to do a segment on Palin yesterday, Ed Schultz also discussed her in great detail, also suggesting that Dick Cheney feared her, while Democratic strategist Bob Shrum voiced his opinion that Romney HAD to give her a speaking spot at the Tampa convention. Oh won't THAT be fun to watch!

Of course yesterday Palin lost a little of her recent political momentum as Sarah Steelman, the Missouri Teabagger she endorsed, went down in flames last night.

This according to ABC News:

Sarah Palin’s chosen candidate has lost Missouri’s GOP Senate primary. So has the race’s self-funding front-runner.

Instead, Missouri Republicans picked Rep. Todd Akin, in an upset victory for the Christian conservative who is serving his sixth House term, and who trailed badly according to polling from Missouri.

Akin’s win comes as a surprise. To many observers, it will seem out of nowhere.

Gee I wonder what could have horrified the people of Missouri so much about Steelman that she came in last?

Personally I think that Palin is giving Romney and his people a lot of sleepless nights right now. She is indeed a truly nasty bitch who will turn on Romney like a rabid dog if he does NOT throw her a bone, but just like his decision to not produce his tax returns, he may think it will do more harm if she DOES make an appearance than if it looks like he is dissing her.

I am still somewhat confused by the fact that so many powerful men within the Republican party are so completely intimidated by the Lunatic from Lake Lucille. I mean I would have bet big money that Cheney would have flicked her off like a flea rather than have to walk back an absolutely accurate statement about her.

Kind of makes you wonder exactly WHAT Palin has in her arsenal that seems to frighten these people so much?

    Key word, "arsenal" Gryphen.

Sarah would gloatingly mislabel the temple that got shot up by a 2nd Amendment fanatic - Sheik? Seek? Hammas? Al Queda? Who cares?

Mitt and his people have to have a lot more foresight than McCain and Schmidt, and realize that while putting her on the bandwagon would ignite the base, they aren't going to vote for Obama anyway. Anybody but Obama is the mantra if it isn't to live vibrantly.

So, it's better to have her snide digs from her home studio in Wasilla, than to invite her to overshadow the grown-ups that have a tough job of convincing Independents and Bluedog Dems to back Romney.

You know what? It's rather funny that the people who claim to be so liberal are sounding a lot like some religious fanatics I know.

"A Second Amendment fanatic"? That sounds a lot like the idiot southern Bible belt shit heads who claim that gays are "after our children"! Just as those blind bastards cannot accept the difference between a gay and a pedophile, you sound like someone too stupid to know the difference between a racist, supremacist pig and someone who likes the 2nd Amendment.

But then, people vehemently against firearms of any sort are usually too emotional about the subject to discuss it rationally.

    2. I agree - she has no support that would turn to PBO if she disappears - Mitt doesn't want her - he really doesn't need any more right wing nut cases in his campaign & the media are looking for ratings not truth when they say otherwise.

Sarah does not help anyone win - she selects folks who have got 70% plus chance before she mentions their name. Waits until 2 weeks before the election. Stillman - campaign or supporter must have paid her to be there - she had no chance with or without Palin.

My brain cannot comprehend Palin supporters at all - she is bitter, hateful and brings no joy to the world we would all like to peacefully share. She spreads hate as the President spreads hugs and smiles. The media should have ignored her from the moment of the attack on Gabby Giffords - and McCain needs to admit to the horror that he brought into federal politics before he is gone to another place.

Your criticism of the OP is off base, Leland. How exactly is the phrase "a 2nd amendment fanatic" the same as calling all homosexuals "pedophiles?"

First, the OP didn't say all people who support the 2nd amendment are nazis.

Second, there is a difference between someone who "likes" the 2nd amendment and someone who is a 2nd amendment fanatic.

Are you saying there isn't such thing as a 2nd amendment fanatic? If you don't think 2nd amendment fanatics exist, I suggest you spend some time on the internet. There are also reasonable people who believe we have a right to bear arms. It's a continuum, like so many other things.

McCain will never admit anything. He could spend his life and eternity in lock up if truth was ever told. Cheney knows how criminal they are. We are talking about a bunch of crooks who are in a hot mess if they don't stick together. They will walk back any slips and defend her forever.

She is a big problem but they will never tell how big.

Did anyone see the comment by Giffords' shooter where he said he was a failure after hearing that Gabby Giffords did not die? It only takes one lunatic like him to shoot people. Even in a lone nut mind can have a target. Why Giffords? Coincident that it was a political target? Did he hate all politicians? Coincidence that Palin published a map and targeted Gabby Giffords?

Palin is only capable of thinking she was the victim. She has no thought about what she did and she walks things back and changes them.

She has big Repub players that will always cover for her.

It will be interesting to see if Romney caves and welcomes her. I may be giving him too much credit but I'm leaning toward he will not have her ruin his convention. On the verge of changing my mind. He is a slimy wimp.

Leland, here's the difference - a 2nd Amendment supporter see a place for the lawful ownership of arms - be it small arms for self-protection or hunting and marksmanship long guns.

A 2nd amendment fanatic sees any attempt to restrict massacre capable arms or to keep guns out of the hands of the criminally insane some sort of attempt to confiscate their kids squirt guns.

This mentally ill guy somehow ended up in Palin's arsenal. His first amendment rights are still exercised.

Mr. Loughner has expressed remorse over the killings and told Ms. Pietz he feels especially bad about his youngest victim, 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green. But, she said, he considers himself a “failure” for failing to kill Ms. Giffords. “He’s disappointed. He feels like he failed. He set out to do this and he wasn’t successful,” she said. Ms. Pietz said Mr. Loughner told her that if Ms. Giffords is alive “then Jared is a failure.”

Sorry guys, but what I said STANDS. There is NO PROOF (yet) that the guy was a 2nd Amendment fanatic! NONE. Maybe later, but the emotional statement made to which I responded ASSUMED he was - and that ticks me off.

Say what you will. Simply assuming something and making a brash statement like that is not doing anyone any good.

10:31? The truth never hurts. I was simply saying the writer ASSUMED something for which there was no proof. I will agree the statement is open to correction with further evidence, but for now it was an assumption. Period.

Oh and for ALL of you who are against firearms that are legal?? Why not try to get Uncle Sam to actually ENFORCE the over 2200 Federal gun laws on the books already before trying to add more.

Congress may talk about legislation to make them LOOK good. However, without enforcement nothing will do any good.

    Two words: Wasilla Mafia.

Seriously. I think the Palins found criminal elements in the oil baron/secessionist/white supremacist/religious evangelical/political fringe folks in both Alaska and the lower 48 that they have hung around with since the '90s --and I don't think they hesitate to use them.

I don't necessarily mean muscle; I think some of these people dig up dirt, and blackmail is used.

Great Idea for a Theme for a Summer Party. In fact, it's so good that I'm surprised it hasn't been done already.

Most of her former supporters are good-humored enough to laugh at their mistake of voting for her, and it would be a way to bring folks together by attacking the uncivil and divisive behavior that Sarah promoted, not Sarah personally.

The caricature that is calling herself Sarah Palin these days is only a character or persona, much like Elaine was a character on Seinfeld played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The only people that believe in the "pretend Sarah" are her immediate family (minus Track) ad a few nutcases scattered throughout the lower 48, primarily.

The Kochs sure aren't buying her as the real deal anymore. That's why they just have Sarah running around the County Fair circuit small venues as their shill for Tea Party puppets they can control if elected.

OT: Perhaps you'll recall Molliere's bawdy La Souillon de Fer in which a beautiful wide-eyed, slightly retarded farm girl with perky breasts and calloused knees arrives in the kingdom's capital only to be cruelly debauched and passed from one court confidant to another. By the end of the play she has collected enough "souvenirs" of her exploits to blackmail her way to become queen of the land.

Apparently you assumed, by Molliere, I was referring to Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, the great 17th century French playwright who wrote classic comedies, such as Tartuffe and Dom Juan under the name Moliere. One "l", indeed.

The author of La Souillon de Fer to which I referred in my comment is 20th century Clarence "Pedro" Molliere, - two 'l's - a man whose sole achievement in the literary arts is to have written the largest number of plays - in excess of 10,000 - without ever having had a single one performed on stage.

One obstacle to his success appeared to be his belief that the finest theater is exclusively written and performed in French and who therefore was committed writing his own work in that most beautiful Romantic language. Sadly, Molliere never bothered to actually learn to speak or write French and all but two of his resulting works were each simply 90 minutes of incomprehensible frenchesque-sounding gibberish.

I still hope you find happiness in other ways...

And her arsenal also includes gun-happy AIPs, crashing planes, burning houses and churches, and a giant-economy-size package of wackos ready to intimidate with any means at hand. Also, too, the GOP may have info on wrongdoings (using that term lightly) that even we don't know about. As someone with a few (nicely controlled) psych issues, I know just how totally scarey dealing with someone half a bead off level can be. Add that madness to the usual convention madness and you're just inviting chaos. Romney would be totally eclipsed if she appears in person. At least if she speechifies from Wasilla, there can be oops so sorry technical difficulties.

Romney remembers how she outmaneuvered him last year when he was announcing his candidacy. She stole the headlines and got the most press. If she was to speak at the convention, she might very well garner more applause than he would and that wouldn't look good either. Palin is not a team player who will undermine, sabbotage or simply stab people in the back. I consider her rented mall space is possibly a means of intimidation. Palin has staged her side shows to detract and steal the limelight.

I bet it is best for the party to pass on her. If she goes 'rogue' and "mavericky" they can speak to Palin has her own agenda and does not truly support the goals of the base and majority etc.

Palin may have believed she would be sought to run by the party by quitting, reality tv, popularity etc.

The bottom line is Palin is not trustworthy and vindictive. I would vote to leave her out and deal with predictable shit, middle fingers, shots she usually pulls. She is quite the disappointment for various reasons.

  20. Well, several comments: one, I think Shrum must like comedy and he wants to see Palin "speak" (notice the quotation marks) at the RNC because you can't have a complete Circus without the freak show. Now we know that Sarah does not go to these things alone, and last time, she got to parade the whole family up on stage (and for months after too whilst campaigning) so Bristol the 'ho, and Willow, the vandal, and Piper, with her not so cute smile, but instead folded arms and scowling face, and Trig (well, maybe) who probably can be uncontrollable at times if in noisy, crowded conditions, and of course, Todd the Pimp. Don't think Track will make it this time; he didn't look so happy to be there last time. Can't you see it now? Would the RNC be responsible for a wardrobe for all of them? This would be the freakiest of the freak shows (Barnum and Bailey would be so jealous).

Now as to the RNC itself: I have been wondering about how it is going to be this year, who the speaker's would be (do they have anyone with class? Bueller, Bueller?), would Sarah get to speak? But first, I think the RNC should hold firm to their beliefs and a major tenet in the last election, the good old Second Amendment. Yes, I think each and every attendee (from the people sweeping up the confetti to the keynote speaker) should be allowed to bring their gun; in fact, if you don't have one, tsk, tsk, one can be provided for you at the door.

I really don't think the hold SP has on the repubs is anything shady or sinister. I think it all boils down to the republican party afraid to distance what they see as an important part of their base...christian conservatives and they know Romney is not the darling of that wing. But as someone else earlier has indicated, christian conservatives won't vote for Obama anyway. The party has no balls, has lost its way and continues to error in its political judgment. Not inviting SP would certainly piss off her dwindling supporters but theyre such an insignificant minority now why should the party even care? The party is damned if they do and damned if they don't. They deserve whatever they get for foisting this trainwreck on the american public.

The GOP's fear is that, of the 7-8% that would actually vote for Sarah even if she ran a last minute third party race, half might stay home on Nov-6 and not vote at all if her most ardent supporters think their Queen Grifter is beign "majorly dissed", thereby making the Presidential election a lock for Obama and swinging down-ticket close races to DEMs, even in Red states.

Same situation with Rick Santorum for some of the major RW fundies, maybe to a slightly lesser degree. Same for Ron Paul, as well. with the true libertarians. All of these would detract from GOP voter enthusiasm if Mitt really thumbs his nose and these 3 withdrew support.

The GOP need Palin, Paul, Santorum behind Romney to have enthusiasm and a good GOP turnout. The 2010 mid-terms were driven by high GOP turnout combined with low Dem turnout. Turnout determinbes who has control of the House of Reps as well as state governors and state legislator.

"Kind of makes you wonder exactly WHAT Palin has in her arsenal that seems to frighten these people so much?"

I think Sarah is playing her winking "watch me be a female victim to the LMS if you dare diss me" sexist game. She will cry sexist and then start her own sexist name calling re cajoneless, limp-wristed, predator, pedophile, vajay jay, etc. etc. No GOP teabagging politician wants to be screeched at or labeled by "victim" Sarah. It would get endless tons of press. She knows and they know that the rogue wouldn't stop to even blink to happily jump at the chance to cry "libel" against any man. But that's what they get for using this cheap trashy skirt of a female in the first place. Alas, now she's even dressing like one.

GOP used her like the political ho she is when it was handy for them. NOW they want her to sit down and shut up but the sexy, unfairly picked-on poor down syndrome mother isn't about to. Sex is power and Sarah is purposely using it to the max! Just look at all the press she got because she was the "victim" of Letterman, Mahr, McGinnis and the like. THAT in my opinion is why they are afraid. Sarah is a female gamer using her womanly wiles against men (notice never against women) to get what she wants plain and simple. It's her M.O. and the only real power she has.

Of course there's also the possibility that one of their buddies were lured into Todd's prostitution ring and they've vowed to cover each other's backs no matter what.

They have already started saying at C4P that it might be better if Palin doesn't speak at the RNC, especially if she is not given a prime time slot. I think it will come out (from Palin) that Palin declined to speak because of the time and then she will carry on at her rented space in Tampa. This way, once again, Palin can play the victim.

  50. I'm glad that MSNBC is talking about the Palin Factor. If she does get an invite to the convention, it will be a trainwreck. She'll "go rogue" and say something that will bring all the attention to her. That's what she does. Alex even noted that altogether, Palin's PAC has donated only $15K to a couple of candidates. "It's all about Palin," she said.

As others have stated, the rabid Palin followers would never vote for Obama, so, if they show up at all, they will hold their noses and vote for RMoney.

Also couldn't help but notice that, in the clips of Palin in 2008, she looked healthy and well-put-together. Obviously she learned nothing from the stylists who did her make-over, just like she has learned nothing of any importance since - except how to distribute hate over the airwaves.

Sarah Palin wouldn't support Ron Paul. What would be in it for her, if she did?

At least the angry muffin man, Newt Gingrich promised the grifter a role in a Gingrich Administration.

Also, a general election can not be won only with the base, independents and moderates need to be won over. I just don't see Sarah Palin having any influence over those two groups.

  58. Anonymous9:37 AM

I don't think Cheney is afraid of Palin or walked back his comments. I think he considers her more or less beneath his consideration, but he is concerned about the process of how a VP is selected, and he thinks the process failed when it resulted in Palin. When his first comments were taken to be against Palin personally, he needed to clarify. No, he doesn't think highly of Palin and considers her selection a mistake. But he doesn't care about her, just getting it right this time.

I also don't see that Palin has anything over these Repubs other than that she still can command a lot of media attention. She's already whining about not being invited, so if she isn't she will put on a major sideshow that could continue all through Sept and Oct. And she could endorse someone other than Romney. They don't want any of that.

However, I do think Romney does NOT want her to speak at the convention and I don't see how they could possibly have her there. She is too untrustworthy and if they ever want to get rid of her, they can't keep feeding the beast.

"Speaking at a fund-raising event in Chicago, the presumptive GOP nominee relayed a story about finding a special coupon in his dad's drawer.

"I found a little paper card, a little pink card, and it said, 'This entitles George W. Romney to a lifetime of a hamburger, a shake and French fries at McDonald's.' It was signed by the hand of Ray Kroc. My dad had done a little training lesson or whatever for McDonald's when there was just a handful of restaurants and I saw this thing and was like, this is a gold mine, dad! What are you doing?"

Romney said he laminated the card for his father, who he said went "almost every day" to McDonald's for either a hamburger or a fish sandwich."

I think it's as simple as the GOP getting orders to romance the Tea Party at all costs if they want to have even a smidgen of a chance winning this election. Disenfranchise the Tea Party and you've lost their votes. Sarah is the Queen of The Tea Party (the crazies) thus the GOP standard bearers have been instructed to treat her with at least a little respect. However, once the election is over, all bets are off and the GOP will distance themselves again from the Tea Party, toss Sarah into the trash bin, until of course they need her to romance the crazies, then they'll say something nice about her and give her some free publicity and she'll come a runnin' for those bright lights and that microphone!

Sarah made a liar and a fool out of every respected Republican who vouched for her.

In 2008 every conservative who voted McCain/Palin believed Sarah was a true frontier woman with a rifle on one hip and a baby on the other. We believed Sarah was an energy expert, an advocate of disabled children, a good mother, a fiscal conservative, a huntress who field dressed moose, etc....

Now do you see why we can´t stand the bitch?

Hell, Sarah couldn´t even fill the Curtis Menard Center when she was stumping for Joe Miller, even after he brought along his own ¨crowd¨ from Anchorage.

What you Democrats are doing with Sarah´s legacy is down right brilliant. Keep her sorry ass in the spotlight.

I think what frightens them is that THEY enabled her with babygate hoax. Either it was scheme they came up with, or once they found out what Sarah had done, they "fixed" everything for her and those who helped her. She could then, blow the whole scheme out of the water by admitting to the scheme. That is their fear. Plus, she is mentally ill. Throw that in the mix and the GOP looks even more pathetic.
