Neil deGrasse Tyson debunks the idea of privatizing space exploration: "From where I sit there is a lot of delusional thinking there."

The only way the private sector would have funded a mission to Mars is if the planet was simply oozing with oil. Any possible life on the planet would have been of no interest unless they could put it in a cage and charge admission for people to look at it.

  1. Edit: 3rd line "...no interest in less they ..."
    should be "unless".

If God had wanted us exploring on another planet, He'd have told us how to build an ark to get there, or would have at least given us the ability to think and figure out how to do it.

PLEASE tell me that comment is a joke!!!!!!!!!!

If not, I'll bet you still believe the earth is flat.

  2. Whatever the motivation, I think we’ll colonize Mars, and then a few moons of the gas giants. I’m happy with that.

private enterprise is human innovation, and should be encouraged.
i love NASA and the JPL, but if we wait for them to do all that needs doing, we will not get as far.
let all of us get excited about the science that is out there to be explored!

You say that knowing that there are those among us (in these United States of America) who believe that dinosaurs co-existed with man???
So surely (Not Shirley) you jest !!

  5. Dr. Tyson and the enormous cache of colleagues (all most certainly scientists) Editorialize on the need for funding focused on SCIENCE instead of typical rethuglicon circus-fueled side shows, he demands a level of respect for speaking the truth, not dribble out of the ass-end of a Roger Ailes KoolAide machine.

In these times of cutting everything BUT the military, I think NASA should take a back seat. Heck, our local high schools are now sporting ads on the fences to fund the teams...can't NASA raise some private money too?
(God, I sound like a Republican!) OK, end the Bush tax cuts and then keep the NASA funding.

Dr De Grasse is one sexy man. I had to get that out of the way before commenting. I sat enthralled when he did his series on Nova about the science of engineering body parts in a lab from the patient's own tissue and using "scaffold" forms of bio neutral material to shape ears (yeah, he "went there" with the hairless mouse with a human ear growing on it's back).

He's spot on in this clip. I think the confusion began when Star Trek named the mothership "The Enterprise". Leave our Space Programs publicly funded. I don't want to see no "CFA" billboards on the moon, mars and beyond. Why can't it be done on the "Olympics" model? Competition between countries and Govmint involvement and interactions between different Govmints as a team have helped advance the cause of Science quite well.

In a truly socialist society the sciences would be deeply funded and not bogged down by petty businessmen who do not see value in anything unless it gives them profit. Under socialism the human NEED to discover and innate sense of curiosity would flourish by empowering people to learn and explore!

how would it be funded? by voluntary donations?

HA! In a truly socialist society, you are too busy cannibalizing your child while starving to death to fund science. Science is innovation. Science is profit. Profit is not bad. Everything you do is seeking profit. Even when you donate to a homeless person, you are socially profitting.

Why would private ventures colonize Mars? Its not like its wide open real estate. Its not like it has vast iron resources. Its not like it might have potential to grow food for Earth.

And what is government going to do? Find life and exploit it for military tech or enslave it? Come on, Neil is delusionally idealistic.
