Neil deGrasse Tyson on the generosity shown to him by the late Carl Sagan, and his desire to pay that forward.

I found myself deeply touched by this anecdote concerning how deGrasse chose the university he would attend and the incredible humanity demonstrated by Carl Sagan.

I now actually have MORE respect for both of these men then I did before, if such a thing is even possible.

OUR universe would be so much better off if we had a.) MORE people like Carl Sagan and b.) more people like deGrasse who recognize this and act on it!

Apparently studying the Universe brings the level of humility to extraordinary heights!

    More power to you, Neil!

    Mr. G,

Not fair to make me cry so early in the morning:)
Neil deGrasse Tyson is a truly evolved human being, and I've always known that after watching him on several PBS shows. My admiration for him now has increased even more, if that is possible. Besides, he's hawt:) Thanks for posting this, and all your posts regarding our beautiful Universe. I truly enjoy them.

Very impressive in how Carl Sagan treated this unknown high school kid, and how it continues to influence deGrasse in passing on that personal attention to future students. Carl Sagan was, without a doubt, one of the great teachers our country has ever had, and did untold favors to his own profession of astronomy. He made the universe understandable to the average person, and his early death was a national tragedy for our country that at the time we probably never really understood.

Wow...I totally agree with all you guys, what a great story. I always watch Neil and his approach to the human existence is always inspiring. He is a class act with the brain power to back up his ideas.

Bill Mahr is back on tonight...Alex Wagner is on the panel so make sure you watch. She is one smart, beautiful woman that takes on the liars like Rachel.

  8. That made me cry. Both men are like heroes to me - I respect both so much. I never knew there was a connection between the two.

As a young girl, I fell in love with Carl when he'd appear on PBS. His calm, intelligent voice "captured" me each and every time.

Now I'm an old lady and I smile thinking about it. :)

What a wonderful story. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a total class act, and the fact that his encounter with Sagan prompted him to pay it forward with his students is a gift. I admit to tearing up a bit. Thanks for sharing.

What everyone else said, and then some. I think all of us have a memory of a good teacher, mentor or friend who's touched their lives or inspired them to be better, but what are the odds that these two people's paths crossed? "Billions and Billions..."
