Neil deGrasse Tyson redefines the meaning of "pro-life."

“I would request that my body in death be buried not cremated, so that the energy content contained within it gets returned to the earth, so that flora and fauna can dine upon it, just as I have dined upon flora and fauna during my lifetime” ― Neil deGrasse Tyson

Now THAT is a pro-life philosophy.

Suck on that Republicans!

Yes indeed! Unfortunately, he will have to be cremated and have his ashes spread to achieve that.

well I don't know gryphen... "bury me in a box and let the worms eat me" sounds great on the surface but when you think about the numbers of humans on the planet, it might be best for the majority of us to be cremated and be done with.

Stop spreading misinformation. Netter to put those nutrients into the ground than into the air as carbon and waste fuel doing so.

He might have to rethink that as it is increasingly difficult these days to have a "natural" burial. Because of laws regarding handling of corpses, etc., most burials require that the corpse be filled with embalming fluids - which are not biodegradeable and most very toxic. Usually its easier to get a simple pine box instead of a pressure treated and painted coffin lined with lead and draped in synthetics. The pine box would degrade faster than the corpse.

So for me, cremate me and then bury my ashes in the garden. Plant a tree on me.

You are also spreading lies. PLEASE people, do some actual research and look up facts before you spew and perpetuate ignorance.

    2. No.

Jews are not embalmed. It is part of their religion. Possibly Muslims too.

They need to be interred within 72 hours. That may bypass the embalming part.

I'd go for a natural burial. There are even graveyards and companies you can contract with where you are buried without a coffin or minimum coffin that degrades quickly so you are returned to the earth as quickly as possible.

BTW that's what my Dad wants. It illegal to spread ashes in our city, but who is going to check? He says cremate him, bring him home. Spread his ashes under all the fruit trees for fertilizer and then keep the empty urn on the mantle. Who's to know?

I stumbled upon this, and not sure if you've seen it.

But this is a link to an hour and change interview between Stephen Colbert and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I've thoroughly enjoyed this interview, and thought I'd link it in case you hadn't seen it yet.

A real fair symbiotic thought. However & not that I'm claustrophobic, but I don't want to spend time in a box, even if it's the right thing to do in the way of giving back, & even tho being dead -- what would I know! Being agnostic, I don't even know what or if I'd know -- anything, so just cremate me, ashes to the wind & be done with it. I'll be reintegrated with the universe in any case. Thinking back to science class, a long way back, what is it that is neither created nor destroyed ? is it energy or matter ? It changes form but endures. Corporal body or brain energy , we will certainly be recycled, knowing or not -- probably not. This AlaskaSundog can't fathom the mysteries of our universe so I enjoy Gryphen's posts & following comments. I ain't young so it matters more.

Energy is neither created nor destroyed- it changes from one form to another. Mass is a form of energy.

That's what's I've always wanted. But I want to be be put into the great barrier reef to help it regrow and stop dying. People really don't understand how crucial the great barrier reef is to the earths ecosystem.

Chella, you can - there are artificial reefs now that contain the ashes of humans in the concrete structure.

I've been thinking along those same lines lately.

Our society needs to create a new Pro Life political party that is actually pro life, in all its forms.

That party would encourage the reduction or elimination of carbon released into the atmosphere, would support clean air and water, would reduce or eliminate fossil fuel consumption, would preserve and protect the environment that sustains all life, and would also work to maximize personal liberty as liberty is one of the important values in and of life itself and we critters living it.

This isn't as hard as our political system makes it seem.

I love the sentiment Dr DeGrasse is conveying. Death is simply part of the natural cycle of all carbon based life forms. I would love to contribute to they cycle that sustained me after I'm gone. The closest method that makes the most sense to me would be Promession, once it becomes available

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promession

No pollution, no muss no fuss. But until then, cremation is the next best thing.

I loathe the entire Funeral Industry and how they take advantage of people at their most vulnerable point in life.
