Nine, count'em nine, Nobel Prize winners ask that the reality show which features Todd Palin be pulled off the air. This day just keeps getting better and better.

Desmond Tutu, and eight more Nobel Prize winner, demand that NBC drop "Stars Earn Stripes."
Courtesy of Raw Story:

Nine Nobel Peace prize winners said Monday that NBC must “immediately” drop a planned “reality” show called “Stars Earn Stripes,” where former four-star general and one-time Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark sends celebrities on military-style training “missions” to entertain viewers.

Signers of an open letter to the network include Nobelists Desmond Tutu, Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Jose Ramos-Horta, Jody Williams, Mairead Maguire, Oscar Arias Sanchez, Rigoberta Menchu and Betty Williams.

Here is their letter in full:

WAR ISN’T ENTERTAINMENT — AND SHOULDN’T BE TREATED LIKE IT IS
August 13, 2012

An Open Letter to Mr. Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, General Wesley Clark (ret.), Producer Mark Burnett and others involved in “Stars Earn Stripes”:

During the Olympics, touted as a time for comity and peace among nations, millions first learned that NBC would be premiering a new “reality” TV show. The commercials announcing “Stars Earn Stripes” were shown seemingly endlessly throughout the athletic competition, noting that its premier would be Monday, August 13, following the end of the Olympic games.

That might seem innocuous since spectacular, high budget sporting events of all types are regular venues for airing new products, televisions shows and movies. But “Stars Earn Stripes” is not just another reality show. Hosted by retired four-star general Wesley Clark, the program pairs minor celebrities with US military personnel and puts them through simulated military training, including some live fire drills and helicopter drops. The official NBC website for the show touts “the fast-paced competition” as “pay[ing] homage to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and our first-responder services.”

It is our belief that this program pays homage to no one anywhere and continues and expands on an inglorious tradition of glorifying war and armed violence. Military training is not to be compared, subtly or otherwise, with athletic competition by showing commercials throughout the Olympics. Preparing for war is neither amusing nor entertaining.

Real war is down in the dirt deadly. People—military and civilians—die in ways that are anything but entertaining. Communities and societies are ripped apart in armed conflict and the aftermath can be as deadly as the war itself as simmering animosities are unleashed in horrific spirals of violence. War, whether relatively short-lived or going on for decades as in too many parts of the world, leaves deep scars that can take generations to overcome – if ever.

Trying to somehow sanitize war by likening it to an athletic competition further calls into question the morality and ethics of linking the military anywhere with the entertainment industry in barely veiled efforts to make war and its multitudinous costs more palatable to the public.

The long history of collaboration between militaries and civilian media and entertainment—and not just in the United States—appears to be getting murkier and in many ways more threatening to efforts to resolve our common problems through nonviolent means. Active-duty soldiers already perform in Hollywood movies, “embedded” media ride with soldier in combat situations, and now NBC is working with the military to attempt to turn deadly military training into a sanitized “reality” TV show that reveals absolutely nothing of the reality of being a soldier in war or the consequences of war. What is next?

As people who have seen too many faces of armed conflict and violence and who have worked for decades to try to stop the seemingly unending march toward the increased militarization of societies and the desensitization of people to the realities and consequences of war, we add our voices and our support to those protesting “Stars Earn Stripes.” We too call upon NBC stop airing this program that pays homage to no one, and is a massive disservice to those who live and die in armed conflict and suffer its consequences long after the guns of war fall silent.

Sincerely,

Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Prize, 1997
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize, 1984
Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Prize, 1977
Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Peace Prize, 2003
President José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize, 1996
Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize, 1980
President Oscar Arias Sanchez, Nobel Peace Prize, 1987
Rigoberta Menchú Tum, 1992
Betty Williams, Nobel Peace Prize, 1977

Well THAT certainly did not pull any punches. Nor in my opinion should it.

What they have written is completely accurate and their request reasonable.

We are indeed inundated with images of war in our movies, in our television programming, and most especially egregiously, in our children's video games.

We are constantly being taught to glorify people whose job it is to kill other people.

Military action should be rare, terrifying, and resorted to in only the most dire and threatening of circumstances, and yet we as a country seem to look for excuses to "unleash the dogs of war" at every perceived slight, and ridicule a leader who seeks the path of diplomacy to solve our differences instead of destroying our "enemies" homes, murdering their people, and implanting our own version of government in the place of the one that dared to thumb their nose at us.

And as bad as all of that is, now we want to celebrate our history of aggressive military action by letting this guy play act the role of the hero in order to help redeem is hillbilly family's now virtually non-existent good name.

I think yanking it off the air would be a great service to the American people.

Of course not EVERYBODY feels that way.

P.S. Not that I believe in that sort of thing, but if I were a Palin having the kind of week that they seem to be having, I might start to wonder if there were a higher power that wanted me to "sit down, and shut up!"

You know, if I believed in that kind of thing.

      anti-war assholes? Fuck you, pro-war hypocritical, low-life Palin panty-sniffer!

WTF is so manly about fighting unjust wars, you idiot? It's not the fault of the brave soldiers who put their life on the line and sometimes come home in a body bag or minus a limb or 2 or 3 or 4.

What makes you so fucking self-righteous that you think your fucking opinion of glorifying playing war is what's good for our country?

Fuck you for calling these good conscientious people assholes, when they actually care about the lives of those who are maimed and killed in war. Seriously, Fuck you, coward.

BTW, they sound like those "thou shalt not kill", pro-life assholes, don't they?

Imagine that, Einstein. Why Todd? Probably because he was a secessionist for 7 years, which is, you know, anti-American.

And on top of that, Todd is a loudmouth pussy who can't do jack shit without asking his grifter wife, who keeps his tiny balls in her purse. So fuck Todd and you. Put a fucking name on your avatar next time, idiot, so I can single your ignorant ass out, you coward.

You must be a typical right-wing chicken hawk. All talk and squawk, but afraid to walk the walk. You're all the same. Pitiful.

Most men who have actually been in combat don't see a bit of glory in killing another human being. But those without a clue like you will whine and cry and call names when asked to pay taxes to pay for veterans' benefits. Oh, any by the way, before you run off feeling all good about yourself, calling you a chicken-hawk isn't a compliment. Hypocrite.

Your hero Sarah is a joke, and Toddy, the needle-dick boy she married is a BIG joke with his little dick like a little punk-ass bitch that he is.

Go back to your little low-info, inbred cousin-fucker enclave at C4P and tell everyone that you talk to to get the word to the two oldest Palin daughters to quit calling me. I ain't fucking either one, nor Sarah either for that matter. I've has enough Palin ass for a lifetime. I feel like I hit the lottery to have that fuckin' crazy Sarah in my rear-view mirror.

So at least get the word to their punk daddy, Toddy. Maybe he can keep his daughters corralled better than he did with his old lady. If he don't take care of his business, those two gals are gonna end up as skanky as their mamma. If they ain't close already.

Perhaps, in celebration of warfare and combat, the show could have a sequel for younger contestants, where they depict the contestants pressed into service, forced to chew khat or do other mind-numbing addictive drugs that would keep them enslaved, press them into servitude as bearers, human shields, or sexual slaves. The show could show the contestants being kept at attention for long hours, during brainwashing sessions of religious fervor. You could show them submitting to pressure to kill villagers or even their relatives, threaten them with having their limbs chopped off as warnings. This could be a great new reality show opportunity for some of the younger members of the Palin family.

      Making ILLEGITIMATE BABIES

A good example is the breeder mentality. "BABIES" are a commodity. Don't give them a good education, keep them in a cult state of mind. NOT all but some of the homeschooling works. The preferred games and videos. Control as much as possible and it is easy to have youth that will buy the entire military complex that we were warned against. We can see young Tripp, how he is being trained or hanging out with some cursing knucleheads. Lucky for him he will not be treated as a Jeremy Morlock. If he goes into the Army he will be like a Dyrek Schlesinger or Track Palin. Glorified because they were born into extreme right war mongering lying families. Notice the public never sees a lick of actual work that they do. The little fishing deal in Dillingham with Todd and Track, he seemed more of a fish out of water, inspite of the fact it was scripted to make him look good.

    23. So I'm an anti-war asshole.
Hello anonymous; I see you were unable to put name behind your opinion. Well let me introduce myself: My name is Mauri Helms. My husband is a missile technician, although I doubt you know what that is. He is employed by the US Navy to not only work on the computers that fire nuclear missiles, but also to do maintenance on said missiles. Again, NUCLEAR MISSILES. The kind that are housed on the Ohio-class submarines and END THE FUCKING WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.
Do you know how many MTs I've known who have threatened to commit suicide or worse because they cannot handle the stress of knowing that they will personally be responsible for killing millions of people? They aren't the ones with their finger on the button (that's the weapons officer's job-- NOT the captain's like in so many movies), but they'r responsible for spinning the missiles up, targeting and getting it ready.
What the fuck do you know about war? Is every man on that submarine who is terrified of letting loose that missile an antiwar asshole in your opinion? Is my Marine friend who lost both legs and an arm in Afghanistan an antiwar asshole? I have another friend who was a guard with TS clearance at Guantanamo Bay-- where he got shit and semen flung at him daily. Is HE an ANTIWAR ASSHOLE?
Before you feel like dissing those of us who apparently have a better idea of what war IS-- maybe you should spend some time getting to know war and its consequences a little better. My father-in-law is a Vietnam war vet. My great grandfather was in a tank division in WWII. My grandfather was in the Navy.
Going to war to protect your country is one thing. WANTING to go to war and thinking that killing, mauling, disfiguring human life is something to be patriotic about...? You are a sick individual. There's no helping you or changing your mind. If you're such a goddamn patriot, why don't you stop letting the young misled youth of this country catch the enemy's fucking bullets for you?

Unfortunately, Piper is probably the most mature one left at home, when she's not having to stay with relatives because of the selfish parents who still can't seem to raise their kids, despite neither having had jobs for over 3 years.

Besides, if Tri-G is visiting them, it's probably Piper who's keeping an eye on him, because her sisters and parents both are too worried about how they look on camera to give the kid any attention and nurturing.

Sorry to be grumpy, but Todd and Sarah have their priorities so screwed up, and their family members refuse to speak up because they're afraid they'll be kicked off the gravy train if they do. And each of the kids have obviously suffered as a result.

The American people do not deserve an entertainment industry that exploits military personnel and has gone to the dark side. We the people must stand up to what they are doing. What will happen with the next generation that the entertainers and military target? This is a new recruit strategy. It does not promote a peace keeping military. It is not attracting the kind of recruits that keep the military one to remain proud.

The media will downplay or black out as much of this reality. The dark side in the military may be small in numbers but they can do enormous harm.

I can see where the AIP story might crack the door open, and if there is sufficient interest, it might lead to a news magazine covering it deeper, and then a broadcast news magazine like Dateline, 60 minutes, who is prepared to buck the MSM or Corporate interests if it appears to be a big story with legs.

AIP is the story for the time right now, and NBC deserves a black eye at the very least for putting a traitors like Todd and Sarah on a pedestal with their past(?) relationships with AIP.

    4. Anonymous11:43 PM

Remember in "Game Change" Sarah lied about Todd's membership in AIP and they told her they had proof as to how many years he WAS a member! They corrected her lie directly to her!! So, the information is accessible and should be provided NBC.

    4. this has already been debunked. CREW and the legals have said that Ryan's sale was part of a planned event, something routinely done with stocks of this type (not sure how that works, or if I quoted it right). Ryan's sale was also earlier in the day and the Bernake meeting took place later that night, after the market closed, which cuts out the insider trading thing.

TPM has this story on their site.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous7:55 PM

Ryan received the comprehensive briefing book several hours prior to the meeting, probably around mid-day. Unfortunately, insider trading was legal for congressional committee members at the time, although there is no disagreement that it is using their office to benefit themselves financially when they act to this type of information.

It is now illegal, and has always unethical. But it makes Ryan another poster-boy for the free-wheeling money class just like Romney, who benefit from the loopholes that the 1% have written into the law in order to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

One set of tax laws for middle-class and working class Americans. Another set of special tax laws for the wealthiest who benefit disproportionately along with their unethical congressman, Paul Ryan included, that benefit using means that would be illegal for average citizens.

This isn't a Democrat/Republican issue because both sides of the aisle have used these insider rules to profit. But Thank God that the Democratic Party isn't stupid enough to run the worst offenders on the Pres/VP ticket like the Republicans. I'm glad our President is making an issue of this so we can make having a more equitable tax system a serious campaign issue.

You got it right. It's a .338 when writing it but when speaking, it's called a three thirty-eight. This a sniper rifle, Todd, not the size of an engine block or its horsepower, you knot-head. lol What does Todd call a 30.06? a "thirty and six one-hundredths" instead of a "thirty-aught-six"? What a sportsman AND a soldier you are, Todd. lol No, you're a big boy, pretending to be a soldier.

The military boys are telling Todd some shit because they know he'll repeat it like he's an expert and all. Then those guys are laughing at Todd as he repeats the nonsense that they've told him when he's on camera.

Those guys are playing Todd for the fool he is, and only he and Sarah don't get that little Todd is being punked and being made to look like a greenhorn.

I loved the story the reader here the other day was telling about their 3-year old son riding around the back yard on one of his toy cars or trucks saying, "I'm a big boy!". You know, that sounds like he's already a confident young man who just needs to get a little dirt on his knees and a few years on him and he'll be a smart, tough kid, unlike Todd. Here Todd is, supposedly a grown man, saying ... "Look at me, I'm a big boy!"

Yeah, sure you are, Todd. But stay in the back yard so Mommy Sarah can keep an eye on you and help you get up and stop crying if you fall down and get a boo-boo.

They laughing at you, Todd. And we are, too.

Thanks. Yeah, you're right about the big talkers. They usually spend more time "talking than doing", and it often catches up and bites the pseudo-experts like Ms. Palin on the ass.

My dad was a Marine, but I never heard about any of their combat action until my dad's funeral a few years ago when I heard it from his service buddies.

Basically, they were young and scared but did their jobs and were glad to be alive and felt lucky to make it home. War was bad, ugly, awful, truly hell and it should be the last resort and was not a game and should never be casually considered because it destroyed lives and families. And that was that.

They felt that grandstanding was bad form, because it was disrespectful to those who didn't make it home or suffered worse. These men were humble because they didn't feel superior to the ones who didn't make it out, so talking up their exploits was cheap.

I learned about firearms, too, but forgot most of it other than handling them safely, which was always rule number one. Oh, and that a big gun doesn't make a small man big, it just makes him a small man with a big gun and nothing more.

I agree with the Nobel winners and I admire them and thank them for speaking out. Their voices might carry some weight, might at least get people to think about what this series implies.

Think of the angst of soldiers returning from tours of duty in the Middle East. Think of those WWII vets who never talked about their war experiences and those who kept silent until they were at least in their seventies. Think of the tears of veterans when they visit graves of fallen comrades or monuments commemorating their sacrifices.

War is not a game; it is not play; it is not entertainment. How brave will the celebrity fake soldiers have to be; what grave moral decisions will they have on their consciences as a consequence of pretending to be soldiers for a few minutes each week for two or three months? General Wesley Clark should be ashamed of himself for becoming involved in this travesty; he is demeaning the worth of every soldier he ever commanded by his actions.

Nowadays, the willingness to cheat by the palinbots voting multiple times in on-line surveys or even call-in/e-mail voting on DWTS distorts anything on the honor system, because winning is more important than how it is achieved.

Cheating and lying are a merely a means to an end for them, and what do they gain? Little if anything, but I believe they lose a little of their humanity---their soul--- each time they make those choices.

Even worse for them and for our society is what values they are teaching and reinforcing to their children in the process. Kids are smart and they learn from you whether you're actively teaching them or not.

Just watched the show. Not impressed. Bunch of guys playing war and hyping it up to make hero's out of ordinary people and a few muscle nuts. If they took the money that it cost to produce this show and give it to Veterans in need, how much more we would think of these war whores. That has taken a lot of money to put this on. It's really none of our business how our servicemen are trained. That is what our military does and not good to tell the world how they do it! They obviously did this on military protected property that we as tax payers pay for. I know many people will eat this up and that is fine, if you want to spend time in the military. With our economy in the dumps because of two unpaid wars and thousands losing their lives I just don't think this is an appropriate show at this time. We've had enough senseless killing by unstable people and this stage just might set some more off to repeat the carnage of looking for attention. We as a nation don't need this right now. This will turn off millions of people. It is time for healing. We are getting enough hate through the political stage right now. Violence is not what we need. Looks like the Bully Wimp from Wasilla will be spared this week. The AIP should be happy to have their man get his manhood revved up! Is Todd smart enough to realize the real thing could wipe that bunch of wimps out so fast they wouldn't know what hit them!

    1. Good comments. I too have been thinking about ways we could honor servicemen/women. This show is not one of them. For starters, we could adequately train, equip and support them and not send them off into senseless wars. Then, we could give them generous benefits including healthcare and psychological counseling when they return from combat.

Personally, I have to wonder about choosing two musclebound black guys who can't swim to compete in this kind of all around water/air/land competition. Some kind of stereotype set-up so that the Dean Cain right-winger fans can say, "see? They can't swim but they sure can jump and run..."

The whole premise of this show is just so out of whack stupid. Why did they have the next team sitting there watching the others go through the exercise? They should have had the teams participating in 4 different exercises at the same time and rotate so that no one was sitting idle.

Ultimately, you're right, Anon@6:57PM, the money they spent producing this series could have been better spent just being donated to one or more vets' organizations.

Now, saying that, doesn't mean Todd doesn't have a lot of baggage to hide. I get the impression he's easy to get along with on the surface and as long as everyone is gaining monetarily, but the individual that we've heard about, seen in video clips (airport) and knowing he is married to the nastiest woman makes one wonder how he can split his personality into two different men. It must take an awful toll on a person's mind to lead a double life.

The NBC cowards need to address the secessionist reality. No more con jobs on the public. Todd will lie, that is no excuse that the others do the same or remain silent.

Silence here means COWARDS. A BUNCH OF COWARDS GLORIFYING WAR IS AS SICK AND WEAK AS IT GETS.

  41. At first I thought this might be a joke from the Onion. What would nobel prize winners be doing watching American TV and why would they care?

    Then I read the letter.

    They are spot on.

I actually watched the entire thing tonight. (Nothing else on and Grimm is on right after.)

It was pretty awful. Filming bullets leave the machine gun in slow motion. Lots of shooting and blowing things up. Playing pretend soldier. I commend them for doing this for charities that benefit servicemen and their families but that really doesn't justify the glorification of war. And of course, for real soldiers there is the fear for their own mortality. Not so in this play soldier reality TV atrocity.

Todd sounded like a girl. I hadn't heard him speak more than a word or two before. His voice is even higher than Tom Selleck.

I will say this. He accomplished his task. Apparently he's used to crawling through the mud. But what really stood out to me is he is NOT A TEAM PLAYER. He got out of the mud first, got the box, went to the shed, etc. He didn't seem to have any concern for the rest of the team, just getting it done so he could WIN. I think this weakness of his will display itself more prominently with each passing week.

He wasn't very good with the machine gun. I expected better of someone that hunts as much as he's supposed to.

I think he was given a weaker "coach" because they expect him to be eliminated pretty early.

they expect him to be eliminated pretty early.... ???? I don't know. This show is more manipulated than DWTS. The winner has been set up. Who knows if Todd is scripted to be a finalist or win? Question what really happened with Jack Osbourne's departure. How and why did a purse carrying pimp oil flack weakling get Hollywood pros to make him look like 'god' on mud? I don't have an answer but will say it is a crime. A worst kind of fraud to demean and use our veterans.

  44. There is NOTHING entertaining about war and those who join such a show, produce such a show or fund such a show should be sent to Afghanistan for a couple of weeks so they know there is no comparison with the crap that is shown on TV.

When people being evicted from their homes use a weapon of choice to kill those bringing the eviction notice there is something seriously wrong with the priorities of a country - and this type of unreal TV encourages the insane to continue to act as gung ho hot shots.

Palin is bringing down the country with her rhetoric and Tad is demonstrating the low life uneducated way to ruin other people's lives.

A plague on their houses that they would think this country supports their hatred.

Americans love their wars don't they? At least the armchair chickenhawks do and there's plenty of them. Rush Limpballs, 'Big' Dick Cheney, to name two right off the bat.

How about a TV 'reality' show at a VA hospital interviewing young people who have lost their limbs or have brain damage and are now living on the streets fighting a new fight for their promised health care?

Or talk to people such as my son who served two COMBAT tours in Iraq and now has many regrets plus has PTSD? (That's why the military LOVES 18-year olds - they all want to be HEROES with little-to-no wisdom as to what/whom the hell they're fighting for.)

Or how about the families whose sons and daughters died in these illegal and morally disgusting wars? Better yet, interview the people whose countries we've invaded and see how 'bombing them into democracy' is working out for them. Shock and Awe my ass. We've killed over a million Iraqis/Afghans and not a second of this genocide is broadcast in the MSM.

To tell you the absolute truth, I've become quite disgusted with my fellow Americans who glorify war. I hope the nine Nobel Peace Prize winners are listened to and this vapid show is pulled off the air (which we all know won't be). This country has turned into absolute filth.

  46. It seems my entire life I have been surrounded by the glorification of war. WWI, the "Great War" is perhaps the least understood/taught of America's conflicts. The ramifications of that war have shaped the world as we know it today. This you-tube of Eric Bogle's classic "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is perhaps the most powerful anti- war song ever recorded. It is pretty much unknown in the US for obvious reasons... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG48Ftsr3OI

“Stars Earn Stripes” is geared toward pubescence and the immature, a recruitment tool. True charity can be done without the "look at me" aspect. $100,000 is slight when you think of the production expenses. I would like to see the total budget to compare costs. The people most 'glorified' are the 'celebrities," words are cheap, anyone can say it is about honoring someone else while they collect a bounty of name recognition publicity and/or pocket a lot of money.

DWTS was a vehicle to revitalize old and forgotten celebrities, when there seemed to be a sincere competion it was worthwhile. When the Palin focus brought out the truth of the fix the show lost all decency and credibility. That hasn't stopped the scam but a few folks are more aware.

Whenever military and charity are put together red flags should go up. If you want to scam, grift and exploit use veterans and military. Those are the charities with the worst fraud.

NBC and Burnett have taken things to a new low. Of the millions they will rake in the token $100,000 is slight. In the process they degrade and abase those they say they want to "honor." Do the victims with homes and families blown to smiterines in other countries even get a mention?

  51. I watched the end of this show to see if Todd got kicked off. The man who did get the boot gave a touching tribute to everyone in the military, but he also spoke an untruth, saying now he knew what it was really like to be in the armed forces. Of course he doesn't.

War IS hell. My husband was a career infantry officer. He went to Vietnam after Ranger/Airborne school at Ft. Benning and Jungle School in Panama. Some people die during these trainings. They are not games. Neither are the regular FTXs (field training exercises) engaged in regularly by all members of the combat arms.

Serving as a platoon leader in War Zone C, my husband was exposed to Agent Orange, a defoliant sprayed to kill vegetation and thereby give the Viet Cong fewer hiding places. (The VC got around this by hiding in tiny camouflaged holes and tunnels in the ground.)

He returned relatively unscathed, I thought, having been injured only by a punji stick booby trap, and having his steel pot shot off his head by a VC sniper, who succeeded in killing the point man.

My sister, a community health counselor, described my husband as psychologically hardy. The only sign of post-traumatic stress he suffered was hyper-vigilance, and that went away after a while.

A few years later, our second child was born with multiple heart defects and a neural tube defect. She died while being prepped for surgery. Later we learned that Agent Orange likely caused her birth defects. AO contains dioxin, a highly toxic byproduct of its manufacture. It permanently damages DNA and causes a host of diseases.

A few years after his retirement, my husband developed diabetes. The VA accepts a "presumptive link" between this terrible disease and AO. In 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2004, he had strokes. He was diagnosed with vascular dementia, and now scores 15 out of 100 points on the Global Assessment of Functioning. Before the strokes, he was a member of Mensa. He held a black belt in taekwondo earned during our years in Korea, and was ranked 7th in racquetball at Ft. Lewis. Now he functions physically at the level of a toddler and suffers from inconsolable anxiety and paranoia.

All of his infantry friends from Vietnam have suffered health problems linked to Agent Orange. One lost a child to birth defects just as we did.

Vietnam is still suffering from the effects of the Agent Orange used by our military. AO was delivered to Da Nang Harbor and stored there. The barrels leaked. Da Nang is highly contaminated with dioxin to this day. Rates of miscarriages, birth defects, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases are high. They will probably never get this poison out of the soil of Vietnam.

If my husband had enough brain cells firing to watch television, he would have turned from this show in disgust. He hates guns, because he knows what they can do. When pressed at a Hail and Farewell one night, he admitted to killing 21 people at close range, and many more that he couldn't see. He shot unknown numbers when he did some Huey door-gunning. He did his duty bravely, earning the Bronze Star twice, one with V for valor, but when he returned he hated guns and would not allow them in our home. Once when invited to go hunting, he said, "I'm never going to kill again."

I used to have a certain admiration for Wesley Clark's intelligence, but his appearance on this show is baffling. As a General Officer, his retirement pay is generous. Maybe he just has no standards. Regardless, I won't watch this show again, even to see who gets kicked off. I'll just check back with IM to read all the posts about it. We can hope it will be canceled as it deserves.

  52. Thank you for your ground-level, gut-wrenching reality check on the so-called 'glory' of war.

Vets from all wars who were lucky enough to survive, and their families, still paying the awful price. A whole new generation of our young men and women who will be permanently scarred if not physically definitely emotionally, likely both. No glory, just heartbreak and suffering.

    Thanks for telling yours.

    1. You're welcome.

You are right about the new generation of veterans. They have a whole new set of problems. Due to improved body armor, people are surviving injuries that would have killed them in earlier wars. That means long recovery times, rehab, and often a difficult readjustment to daily life.

In addition, some returning vets are having a hard time getting treatment for post-traumatic stress. Not long ago, a number of vets at JBLM had their diagnoses reversed. There was a hue and cry, and those errors are being corrected. Still it's a rough road they're on.

Seeing the human cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, you'd think people would get it. But apparently there's an element of our society who find this kind of thing entertaining.

For participants like Todd, swaggering around with a big gun makes them feel macho. It's compensation for other short-comings, no doubt.

I'm happy that Bishop Tutu and others are calling for this show's demise. Like the worst sexual porn, it has no redeeming social value.

From the beginning I felt there was something unseemly about this show, but couldn't put my finger on it. This letter and all the comments have certainly cleared up my denseness. I was also disappointed in Gen. Clark for participating in such a lurid program. Unfortunately, I'm sure NBC will continue with the show until the new teevee season starts. So sad.

Why doesn't Mark Burnett create a reality show with maimed, PTSD, homeless and suicidal vets? Actors and dumb celebrities could pretend to be hospitalized, recovering from Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, losing it at a Temple, joining a brotherhood of a "kill team" while on active duty, living on the streets when they get back to the USA, having benefits cut and things like that. Re-enacting what it is really like for too many veterans, walk a day in their shoes. The "glory" time in war doesn't last long. Doesn't the public want to know why the focus is on that short time of so called glory? The long run matters, the vets that don't die are looking at living for decades with the effects of war. How much does a hundred grand matter? Burnett probably spends more to have his pool cleaned each year.
The Burnetts of the world, stop avoiding the truth.
