Rachel Maddow dives deep into the hypocrisy of Mitt Romney.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

So it appears that Romney has been doing this tax return stonewalling for years, while demanding that others reveal theirs, and in fact also lied about being a resident of Massachusetts when he ran for governor there.

But if you think that is the most disgusting thing that Romney has done concerning this subject you could not be more wrong, check out this next segment where Romney chides Ted Kennedy for not releasing HIS tax returns, and then uses his refusal to comply for years thereafter.

Thank you so much for posting Rachel's excellent work on this!!! Considering how many years he's been running for President, you have to wonder why he didn't just tailor his tax returns so he'd be comfortable making them public.

"why he didn't just tailor his tax returns so he'd be comfortable making them public.

Because he was too greedy to forgo all the special 'opportunities' that now make his tax returns toxic. 'Opportunities' like overseas bank accounts that 'shelter' income and bankrupt companies that paid Bain tens of millions of dollars for 'advisory fees' and payments to Bain for the privilege of being bought by the vulture capitalists.

Rich men can sometimes walk away from the table, but not when there is still money on it.

Imagine updating the story of Ampad by directly showing Mitt's share of the loot against the laid off employees and screwed creditors. Imagine the opposition ads where the worker says I got fired and lost my house while Mitt took $X million to the Cayman Islands. You could probably find some small businesses forced into bankruptcy because Ampad took what they were selling and then paid less than a penny for every dollar they owed. Mitt owns this and he won't take responsibility for it.

Read the story at this link and wonder what questions you could answer with Mitts tax returns.
      www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/05/bankruptcy-report-on-bainowned-ampad-creditors-repaid-124072.html

Properly analyzing the tax returns would be complicated. You would have to look at all the other Bain deals like Stage Stores (bankrupt 2000), GS Industries (bankrupt 2001), Dade Behring (bankrupt 2001), Details (bankrupt 2003) to figure out just how much Mitt and Ann made on each hose job.

Mitt and Ann understand horses, they probably know you can't pull a thirsty horse from water. Mitt is a thirsty vulture.

I look at Mitt and I see the character from American Psycho.

The way he kept going at his opponent who had actually shown her returns because her husband hadn't-- was mind blowingly fucked up and incredibly insane considering he showed nothing. So why? Does this nasty piece of work think his right to privacy towers over everyone else's? Where the fuck were Anne's returns? I really do believe this sorry excuse for a man thinks we are all stupid. But lets face it--he has gotten away with some pretty disturbing stuff. I can't believe they let him run for governor after he lied.

Tax Returns Smoke Hides a Blazing Inferno of Romney Lies

Most Americans have heard the saying “where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” and one need not be an astrophysicist to catch the meaning. With all the smoke this past week regarding Willard Romney’s failure to release past tax returns, it is apparent there is a fire Romney is determined to extinguish to prevent the public from getting an accurate view of his finances. When Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asserted a Bain investor, and a number of others, confided in him that Romney avoided paying taxes for 10 years, it fueled the fire that Willard has secrets he is desperate to keep under wraps. Romney is no stranger to concealing damaging information that could doom his chance of becoming president, and if there were only one aspect of his record he kept hidden, it is possible the press and public would not be so curious, but it is a recurring theme that transparency is not within his purview.

Romney could end speculation immediately if he would release his returns going back to 1999 when he claimed he left Bain Capital, but coupled with his fraudulent SEC disclosures, they would verify he was still in charge long past his alleged separation date. There is plenty of speculation as to why he is afraid to release the returns, but without careful examination, it is all speculation. However, there are clues that Romney’s tax issues are damaging and one need look no further than John McCain and his decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate over Willard.

Do the majority know Rachel Maddow to be highly educated? She has her doctorate and should really be referred to as Dr. Maddow, but it's obvious she doesn't want to appear as an elitest and doesn't even refer to herself as that!

She is an extremely competent, detailed, proof-sourced host of her show. Plus, she has a great research staff that she employs and works with closely on a daily basis.

I find it apparent she loves doing her job too!!! Her sense of humor is outstanding and I love her 'cocktail' moments so wonderfully shared with all of us!

When she has said/reported something incorrectly, she always corrects herself and apologizes (which we NEVER see the other side do!) for the error. I've watched her for years now, on an almost daily basis, and have found she hasn't had to apologize for much of her reporting!!

She is factual and can be trusted! Not so as to FOX, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, O'Reilly, Shawn Hannity, George Bush, Dick Cheney and on and on!

Pay attention to whom you listen and read (as to the media) and review BOTH sides. Watch/listen/read all proof sources IF they are provided.

It makes me sick to be able to trace industry-favorable amendments to palm-greasing industry 'lobbyists' (using that term very loosely).

But, i know Ponzi when i taste it... and not being required by law to make deposit refunds if you close up shop is in order to allow people to steal from their escrow accounts. This makes those business owners depend upon future deposits to pay bills that should have been covered by current deposits.

Does that sound like an elegant fucking Ponzi scheme to you? And, it's those escrow-stealing people greasing the necessary palms.

At least, i'm not stewing in my outrage, alone:

Van Jones was on Morning Joe yesterday, and he made an excellent point: neither of the presidential campaigns make a move w/o focus grouping the hell out of it, so Van Jones said that, of course, Romney has focused group releasing all or part of his tax returns for the last decade, and the results of the focus group led Romney to decide that under no circumstances will the American people forgive him for whatever is in there.

Maybe that was obvious to everyone but me :) for me, it was kind of a revelation.

      >>Maybe McCain's staffers did not see the returns. Romney most likely insisted only McCain view them.<<

Very unlikely. Romney probably insisted that one or two McCain staffers or advisers who were licensed professionals (like attorneys or C.P.A.s) sign non disclosure agreements (N.D.A.) prior to viewing. That way Mitt could put the hurt on them by some type of disciplinary action at their licensing board if his information leaked out.

Mitt would have wanted the leaker to be stuck between Mitt (and his law firms) and President John McCain, rather than the spineless tough guy Mitt being in the position of going after a real tough guy McCain if McCain was in the position to be the leaker.

I think Mitt was really worried about whatever he submitted leaking. He wouldn't have submitted something tht was cooked up special to fool the McCain campaign? Would he?

Someone reporter needs to ask Mitt if there was a N.D.A. on ANYTHING he submitted to the McCain campaign. He's a sneaky m.f.er so the immediate follow up question is to ask if anything he had submitted on his behalf to anyone concerning the V.P. selection in 2008 had a N.D.A.

If he denies the N.D.A. then be sure to ask about a C.A., P.I.A., and C.D.A. (other forms of confidentiality agreements).

Thanks Gina! That's the closest I've seen until now that resemble a prison uniform. Kind of gives me hope! HA!

  26. Yeah, GinaM, the picture is a riot. I'm no hair expert but even I can see where what's left of her real hair ends and the tribble on her head begins. You can even see how far back on her bald pate, the wig is placed - or anchored. The Belmonts have been replaced by implants. Man, she's going to be even more fugly as she ages.

One of the best things about Rachels show is to make sure you read her blog as well. There she lists all of her sources like true professional.

Her ongoing list of Mitts mendacities is truly mind blowing, I think we are up to week 26 and every week the list just keeps getting longer.

It is a really good example of how modern media and traditional media should be used together.

I absolutely adore Rachel Maddow and her big, beautiful brain. Her research is meticulous, and she was at the top of her game last night. We were clapping and yelling, "Amen, sister!" at our house.

I am a Michigander who remembers George and Lenore Romney with respect. All Mitt has ever done is try to out-do his father, by hook or by crook. He still doesn't understand that George Romney earned his job, his political victories, and his place in history. For some reason, Mitt thinks he is entitled to more and better simply because he is Mitt Romney.

I don't know about the rest of you, but it was torture for me to live through eight years of a "Decider in Chief" with daddy issues. Knowing that Romney's issues are even worse -- plus he's twice as stupid, ten times as mean, and a pathological liar to boot -- why would any sane person vote for this weasel?

This whole tax issue will be a thorn in his side. I love Rachel's brand of journalism. She presents the topic in the context of it's time, then goes on her blog to site sources which back up every fact she addresses. It's everyone else's fault but Mitt, take his word for it, he paid his taxes. All of them.
I'm surprised she hasn't addressed the tax dump that's in McCain's files, I guess if you're uber rich you can trust another uber rich republican to keep your secrets.
