Ex-presidential candidate, and current Texas Governor, Rick Perry calls for "Christian warriors" and "Christian soldiers" to stand up against President Obama.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

During a conference call with evangelicals on Tuesday, Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) called upon “Christian warriors” and “Christian soldiers” to “stand our ground” against President Barack Obama, who he said is trying to ”remove any trace of religion from American life,” a message inspired by “Satan” himself.

Perry made the comments during a conference call with pastors and evangelicals nationwide, as first cited by Right Wing Watch. He was taking part in an ongoing religious campaign called “40 Days to Save America.” Other participants in the calls this week include Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), and even former Jack Abramoff co-conspirator Ralph Reed.

Introducing his guest, pastor Rick Scarborough, one of the “40 Days” organizers, credited the governor’s spirituality with ending the Texas drought. (Update: The Texas drought is actually still going on.) But it was Perry himself who did the real preaching.

In audio published to the campaign’s website, Perry claims that the constitutional provision which guarantees the right to religious freedom actually drives faithful Christians out of the public sphere. “This iron curtain or whatever you want to call it between the church and people of faith and this separation of church and state is just false on its face,” he said.

He went on to insist that it is a Christian’s duty to “defend life” by electing women who want to restrict women’s health services. “Satan runs across the world with his doubt and with his untruths and what have you, and one of the untruths out there is driven, is that people of faith should not be involved in the public arena,” he continued.

The Texas governor added that there’s “spiritual warfare” going on over “President Obama and his cronies in Washington” attempts to “remove any trace of religion from American life.” He did not specify how the president, a fellow Christian, was supposedly doing this. Perry also warned that it would be up to “Christian warriors, Christian soldiers” and Americans in general to “stand our ground and firmly send a message to Washington that our nation is about more than just some secular laws.”

You know this is an indication of WHY, out of all of the choices for the GOP ticket this year, that the clearly flawed and unready for prime time Mitt Romney emerged victorious. Simply put because the other choices (With the possible exception of John Huntsman) were completely out of their fucking minds.

You know this kind of uber religiosity in the year 2012 is both startling and frightening.

We are watching people in the Middle East behaving like animals due to the idea that somebody dared to disrespect their prophet, and acting horrified at the thought, while among our fellow Americans there are many who are on the brink of the very same kinds of irrational behaviors. Essentially many of these people are just one, or perhaps two, perceived slights against Christianity away from burning down mosques, temples, and synagogues all over the country.

All it takes is somebody in authority, like for instance the governor of your state, telling you that you are a "warrior" and that you need to "stand your ground" against the forces of Satan, and the next thing you know we have the Crusades taking place in our own backyard.

In short a blind faith in ANY deity makes a person infinitely malleable in the hands of those who know how to bend them to their will, simply by tapping into their victimhood and sense of "specialness," before sending them forth to do all manner of crazy and dangerous things on behalf of their "prophet" or religious leaders. So long as people are willing to suspend their critical thinking they will always be the pawns of those who sense their weakness and desire to feel connected to something bigger than themselves.

It is a useful tool for even an identified dipshit like Rick Perry. As evidenced above.

Is THIS a good time to remind everybody that this ridiculous crap is rather rapidly coming to an end?

Averaging across the two measures of atheism, the entire world population would cross the atheist threshold by about 2038 (average of 2035 for disbelief and 2041 for religiosity). Although 2038 may seem improbably fast, this requires only a shift of approximately 1 percent per year whether in religiosity or belief in God. Using the Human Development Index as a clock suggests an even earlier arrival for the atheist transition.

And considering the craziness up above, this transition cannot come fast enough in my opinion. Of course you KNOW which country will be the last to  make the transition don't you? Oh yeah, the good ole US of A.

But it is STILL coming.

NOo, Randall, they do not. None of them have read enough history about theocracies to have any clue as to how they can turn and eat you alive. Who does Perry think is going to write the rules for his idea of government? Does he really think that some places won't rebel and boot out people who want to force their belief system on everyone in the area?
I think this push for radical religious government is a death knell for the whole right religious movement. Catholics, Mormons, and other religions may get in bed with fundies for social stuff like gay marriage and abortion, but they sure as shit are not going to be supporting them for much else especially if there is a religious test for being allowed to be part of said government.

    2. I was born and raised in the Mormon "church." freedom of thought is not encouraged, you're not even supposed to associate with people who don't hold the same beliefs as you (it's one of the requirements for getting permission to enter their temple). Only read good wholesome books, don't watch certain movies, don't go anywhere online that is critical of the church.... They teach you that to observe your religion with any level of curiosity is putting your eternal salvation at risk.
It is brainwashing. Pure and simple. In primary they teach you all the kid songs about loving Jesus, choosing the right, marrying a return missionary/going on a mission, and to follow the prophet. Years after leaving the church I STILL KNOW all the words. Sometimes to my horror I find myself humming one of their tunes mindlessly.
Realizing youve been brainwashed is terrifying. But when you're in the midst of it NO, you don't realize just how dangerous your religion is to yourself and those around you.

I would say that Huntsman was the lone sane person on the GOP side. His ideas weren't great, but at least he isn't a complete lunatic. This Perry crap plays well to TexAss retards. Perry has made himself look like an ass on the national stage. Reelection looms. We also have a real problem with religious infection as a species. While Christianity shouldn't be useful as a mechanism to spread hatred and stupidity, that's what it turns out to be. Islam has hatred written in, but Jesus went around talking nice, so it's ironic that his followers are nearly as nasty.

I agree, Huntsman was the 'logical one' whom I believe could have actually had a shot at winning. The rest of the pack was just a side show, a sad diversion to make Mittens look like a winner for such a short time, long enough for him to ""WIN"" the nomination. THE Prez might as well pull his ads, Mitt is doing a fine job of getting Obama re-elected for him......haha

Where I have no respect for him -- he said in an interview a very short time ago that he would still be voting for Romney. Shows to me he's Party First - not Country First. That's where his has lost any respect or credibility IMO as clearly he knows more about Mitt than he has said. Mitt having headed the Olympics in Utah but bigger -- they are both Mormom and in that secretive circle of the Leaders, they know, hear and speak to and of each other.

I was raised Mormon, and I can tell you from first hand experience that they are absurdly clannish. In my home town there is a dentist, and he's apparently not particularly good. The Mormons know this, but they go to him anyway because he's Mormon. I've heard tell of some pretty bad dentistry, but they just ignore it and keep going to him.

All of these Republican assholes who will openly admit that Romney is a joke, but who will vote for him anyway because they are a member of the same club are just as bad as the dumb Mormons with ground down teeth.

I saw a recent interview with Huntsman---can't remember who the interviewer was---and while he said he supports Romney, when asked when he last spoke with Romney, he said very flatly, " I NEVER speak with Mitt Romney." It was an odd response. Or a telling one.

Pawlenty has left Romney's campaign -- or at least he said he has as he can be hiding in the shadows as we know Romney's campaign has many.

Pawlenty has been hired as CEO of a Washington lobbying firm -- who lobbies for banks -- aka 'Regulation buster' CEO

“Few industries have more impact on the entire economy—and on the lives of average Americans—than financial services,” said Pawlenty in an announcement regarding his prestigious new gig.

Yea -- he's prepared to screw the country and it's hard working citizens without a second thought for his personal gain of $1.8 million but we know that's a bullshit figure.

G., as a christian-in-progress, and as a believer all my life, baptized and reborn, please know that there are many believers out there who think this kind of talk by Rick Perry is outrageous and counters the gospel message.

Some churches in the United States and West today slowly slid past the message and have taken on a whole new gospel, made by men who prefer to rule over others and force the gospel over others. This is not biblical command. In fact, the command was to spread or share to those who who accept. It was not fashioned to become a national edict. God knew how humans go rogue.

Churches are not the 'church of Christ' - His church, it's taught, is the believer humbly acting upon the precepts, giving any thanks and glory to God alone. Today, if anyone gives glory to God alone, he's considered a loon. But that's the road less traveled that a real christian must follow. He's not supposed to raise armies, rebellions, crusades and temporal tools to form Christ's Kingdom here on earth. No where in the New Testament is that a command. Jesus came as the suffering servant. It's written that He'll return as the Lion of Judah to rule righteously. Meanwhile, christians are supposed to maintain the servant's heart with meekness and thankfulness. Sermon ended.

So, IMO, Perry and his ilk discovered a long time ago that if they want to get rid of President Obama, they need to prey on the unlearned lukewarm questionnable christians who don't read their bible, but yield to greedy power-lust pastors who are in the pockets of greedy power-lust governors and leaders.

From reading and knowing in my own community, there are lots of christians that are concerned about the rhetoric, andg the false 'spiritual battle rhetoric' that is going on; they know it's coming from the false prophetic teachers, the false christian book-sellers and christian ware sellers that sit in the temple making a buck. They know it's all false. But, their voice is overridden by the narcissistic fame-seeking, hard-driving Jesus-betraying God-exploiting candidates out there. Just give it a couple of months. I believe the verse that says each will reap what he sows.

Rick Perry and the whole lot of them are just using and exploiting the God of the bible so they can win an election. Having Christ as Lord of one's life doesn't have to be lived in a church. At least President Obama doesn't 'sell' the gospel for a bowl of pottage. He never used it to gain votes. He doesn't brag about himself; he makes decisions that may be counter to the gospel, but who doesn't? He at least is better suited to be a follower of Jesus because he doesn't judge others, and refer to them as Satan. If he ever became convicted of a thing, I'd say he would be the man that would admit his mistake and back down and say he was wrong. Saying one is wrong is not in the vocabulary of the Rick Perry's.

Yet "they" still go to these churches. "They" still listen from the pew and say nothing. "They" still drop their dollar bills into the collection plate each Sunday.

If these "real" Christians would stand up, walk out and quit quietly aiding and abetting the false preachers and politicians by sitting on their hands in political correct politeness, then these types wouldn't have the power they do now.

Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are they who are meek, for they will inherit the earth."

Matthew 6:1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."

Matthew 6:2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

Matthew 6:5 "When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get."

Matthew 6:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

      Matthew 23:5 "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;

Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

Luke 6:24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort."

Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector."

Luke 18:13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

I hate it when other people quote scripture to tell ME what I'm doing that I should be doing differently. When I read it myself and apply it to my own heart and my own expectations of myself, I find that this Jesus dude told his followers the way things ought to be, and had an incredible understanding of human nature and man's frailties.

Maybe we're all Pharisees at one time or another, but some of us are either too proud, too stupid, or too blind to our own human nature.

There's nothing more repulsive for me than to have to watch a self-righteous hypocrite go through their self-congratulatory routine of how they set the human standard for kindness, piety or leadership. I can usually roll my eyes and hold my tongue until they begin to use their act of imparting THEIR wisdom in order to leverage their personal status in a way that allows them to exercise dominion over others. At that time, I usually try to show my ass as much and as loudly as possible in order to shine a light on their untoward intentions.

Perry is so full of it and remains one of biggest jerks in public office. Actually, this whole rant is reminiscent of the militant Muslims and reactionary Orthodox Jews around the world. Is there really a difference? They should all get together on another planet and leave us normal people to live in peace the way we see fit. Comparing ALL orthodox Jews to militant Muslims is so stupid it hurts. Orthodox Jews vary greatly in their degree of regilosity. They ate not all the same just like all Muslims aren't the same. You have a very very tiny group of the Orthodox who are prejudice against others including fellow Jews. But they don't teach their kids to blow themselves up as suicide bombers and they generally are not physically violent with guns an ammunition.
You can't put all Orthodox in one group any more than you can all Muslims or all Christians. Orthodox means more religios but the vast majority stay in their own community and are quiet and peaceful.
You do have a faction that treats women and other less religious Jews terribly.
In Israel just as many secular Jews are far right as the orthodox.
And even then, show me examples of kiting and suicide bombing. There aren't many. Please don't bring up Palestinians because most of the Israeli army is not orthodox and there are two sides to this complicated story.

I personally think all religions are wacko but I still don't seearge groups of fundamentalist Christians or others planning suicide bombings. And bringing up Tucson??? The guy was severly mentally ill. There is no evidence that he was religious.

Will we be having a holy war here?
If so, let's look in-depth at the Mormon religion in the next seven weeks. Politics makes strange bedfellows, but nothing quite as bizarre as the extra-terrestrial Mormons and Perry's old-line Baptism.

It's a musical parody done by opera singers in support of another term for Barak Obama.

Perry views religion like football -- you're on our time or we're agin you. He has no mental capacity to understand the multiple layers of religion, and why his choice is not the be-all and end-all of religious belief.
Humility, charity and love are essential. Perry has none of these. I won't be the one who says he's not a christian, but he should wonder why so many Chtistions (including me) think he is a misguided cultist.

    Puh-leeze --

Joseph Smith was a convincted conman. HIs hocus pocus convnced a bunch of barely=surving dirt farmers to believe in his Ponzi scheme, and head off to the west, so they could have many wives and live like a clan. Much of what he adopted, without atttribiton, was from the Masons.
They finally built their white, mail-dominated Ponzi cult, which helps its members, but not the community at large. It's a closed system.
Ill bet Ann Romney had very few days when she could admit to being weak. She HAD to get better.
Her husband's statements: "I'll eat cerel; I'll -----" are all about HIM> What sacrifices HE'll give up for her intractible disease. It
s a very, very strange and selfish way to tell your spouse it's okay if she can't do all the heavy lifing anymore: I'll still love you. I thought their love was for eternity, anyway.

You call the Utah cult anything you want. And have you ever read "Under The Banner Of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer? Read it. It'll give you a good look into the life of Mormons, while making you sick.

You want to see christianity erased, or at least greatly diminished and so do I. I don't think there is any reason to think that Obama, being a highly intelligent person, would like to see the same.

But alas, he needs to keep it a secret because the American people just aren't ready to face the truth about their sky fairy beliefs. And so, he can't admit that he's an atheist. I have total confidence that he is, and that is one of the main reasons to have confidence in him!

Yes, it's o.k. to talk out of both sides of your mouth at once when it's concerning religion and it's evil hold on politics.

This video is one that is sure a keeper for 2016 use. Hopefully someone in the media or elsewhere does that as it is a common practice for stuff to disappear when needed.

Gov Christie is 'courting & stumping for' Steve King.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), whom I suspect most neutral observers would consider one of Congress' more offensive clowns, is in a competitive re-election fight this year, but will get a boost today when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) headlines a luncheon on King's behalf

Romney, about a month ago did a stump speech in Ohio standing in front of a stage filled with coal miners.

Well -- I hope the MSM picks the story up and runs with it to ruin another day of Romney's 're-etch-a-sketching' himself for the second and third time this week alone. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!!

Those miners -- several have come out that they were forced by the mine's owner to attend adding to the fact that they lost a day's pay in doing so.

Add to this, there is an ad running at the moment where there are '2 miners', one of which is doing the talking. He is one of the Execs of the company that forced the miners to attend.

This is coming back to bite. OUCH!! This has to grow legs and get out there!!

There simply is no prejudice against religion or "people of faith" in America.
But America is and always has been a secular nation and that is what made us exceptional - the USA was the first country with a secular Constitution.
"There shall be no religious test for office" means that it doesn't matter what one's religious beliefs may be. That is why any, all, or none are acceptable religious views. In legal matters, the courts and the evidence that they can weigh are intended to be deciding factors. In a similar way, political views have to be constrained by actual evidence. If you can't swear-in and have your witnesses be bound by the rule of law, their witness is of no value and their testimony can't be tested or verified.
Rick Perry is trying to call on a witness who can't be bound by any rules and can't be allowed to affect any worldly matters since no two parties can agree on what any provided testimony might actually be saying.

"...people of faith should not be involved int he public sector"? Jerk off. I have no problem with them participating in public life - as long as they understand that their faith isn't mine or the person's next to me or whatever and they should keep their OWN faith to themselves instead of trying to cram it down our throats through government or SCHOOLS!

I repeat my oft stated line: Fanaticism for ANY reason is dangerous!

These are fanatics and are a bigger threat than al Qaeda.

Gryph, you are definitely in your element on this topic. This analysis is one of your very best, this line in particular:

"In short a blind faith in ANY deity makes a person infinitely malleable in the hands of those who know how to bend them to their will, simply by tapping into their victim hood and sense of "specialness,""

As to the inevitable coming of a secular age, 2038 is farther away than I or my progeny would like. Keep writing about the craziness of super religious and their campaign to theocratize America.

I'm guessing this isn't unusual in times of national crisis, especially financial. I bet if we researched it, that the Christo-Nazis were trying their best to drag the country off the cliff during the Depression.

The crazy-christian-community did the exactly the same in 2004 to defeat John Kerry -- a 40 days crusade of prayer and fasting while spouting a lot of bullsh*t lies. The call went out via the evangelical network to a ton of churches so they could coordinate their efforts.

    Scum....

@Gryphen -- in the future, it might help to broaden from "blind faith in any deity" to "blind faith in any ideology -- including belief in any deity". That would help get beyond the knee-jerk response of "those atheist.communists killed .."
