Hidden within the beauty of Alaska, sometimes lurks ugliness and terror.

Courtesy of the ADN:

The man accused of shooting a police officer Thursday at a hotel near Merrill Field later admitted to stealing cars and burglarizing homes to feed a heroin addiction, charges say.

It was those Hillside break-ins police were investigating when Jason W. Barnum opened fire from a bathroom at the Merrill Field Inn, police say. His weapon: A handgun stolen in the recent burglaries and vehicle thefts, according the charges. One officer was lightly injured in the gunfire and is expected to return to work Tuesday.

Two officers shot back, striking Barnum in the right arm, said Lt. Anthony Henry.

Described by police as a "serial burglar," Barnum spent most of the past decade in prison on burglary and forgery convictions. The 37-year-old is now charged with attempted murder in the two-hour standoff that emptied the hotel, froze traffic on Fifth Avenue and drew nearly every on-duty police officer in the city.

How would you like to be standing next to THIS guy in the line at the bank?

You know I often work with the mentally ill and troubled youths of Alaska, and my first thought about this guy is that he probably fell through the cracks and wound up in the court system, probably as a juvenile, where he learned to self identify himself as an outsider in society and undoubtedly developed an antisocial personality disorder. That is IF he didn't have one already.

Nobody tattoos themselves like this if they feel socially connected to the world around them. And feeling that disconnect would of course would mean that he would have no compunction about stealing from others, and in fact most likely believed it was owed to him by a society that had abandoned him.

However though I may sympathize with his plight to some degree, as an Anchorage resident, and somebody who lives quite close to Hillside and Rabbit Creek, I am VERY glad to see this guy off the streets.

(P.S. If you so desire there are more unsettling pictures of  Jason W. Barnum to see here.)

A personality disorder of any type cannot "be developed" , you either have one or you don't.

But I do agree this man has issues, deep issues. And some people, no matter what upbringing or chances they have end up like this.

Like my Dad a small town educator of 60 yrs says.
"99% of problem kids, aren't problems--it's their problem parents.
But that one percent, those are the bad kids that just grow into problem adults."

Personality disorders, like many psychological disorders, are based on a combination of genetic predisposition and environment. With the exception of (legitimate) psychopaths/sociopaths-- the percentage of those two occur the same in every country.
But most PD's are more based on genetic and environmental triggers. Borderline PD is seen primarily in females, Antisocial PD is seen primarily in makes (and a large percentage of the New Zealand natives--Maoris). This is based on countless studies, although all studies are subject to factors. Women are more likely to seek treatment, some doctors use BPD as a "well dunno what else it could be, I'll just put you here" diagnosis, etc.

Personality disorders can absolutely be developed. You are not always born with them. Trauma, illness, abuse physical.sexual.mental are just some of the causes of personality disorders.

    2. i believe it is a sclera tattoo.

in other words, some form of permanent dark ink was injected into the "white part" of his eye. this body mod was pioneered in the tattoo/mod world by Shannon Larratt 5 years ago, but has since been seen in at least two "now famous for this" prisoners in 2010.....

"Nobody tattoos themselves like this if they feel socially connected to the world around them."

With all respect Gryph, there are are many people who dress in a manner that offer no visible indication of their disconnection from the world around them. For example, FOX News hosts whose countenance belies their own socially-venomous intentions and philosophies.

I do see your point, but it seems to be such a broad generalization as to be beneath you.

    1. Good points by both your comment as well as G's post. Those whose appearance is so harshly antisocial are usually wearing the "bumper-stickers" of their bigotry or anger against society in general, or often they indicate the certain groups they hate by their tattoos, clothing with slogans or colors, or other adornment.

Their overt visual signals allow most of us to identify them on sight, and avoid a confrontation in most cases.

But what about those who are like the guy pictured in this link:

      http://tinyurl.com/Mitt-smirking-after-press-conf

I would contend that Mitt is much more dangerous because of his potential to do more harm to millions in our country, or possibly BILLIONS of human beings around the world. Too many voters are swayed by the "packaging of a candidate" instead of past performance in which his questionable character was on display. Instead, folks need to zoom in closer to see his ruthless behavior in the past regarding other human beings.

The fact that he has no empathy or regard for human dignity for those outside his own circle of contacts makes him identifiable as a sociopath. But Mitt must be scrutinized below the thin layer of veneer of "respectability" that is provided by those whose job is to "humanize" Mitt, in particular his wife, Ann, his campaign staff, the sector of the media who shill for Mitt and his group of Point-Oh-Oh-One-Percent financial backers as well as the backers themselves, many of whom are tens to hundreds of times more financially wealthy than Mitt.

The fact that Mitt is willing to be their "front man" so eagerly and willingly, by molding all of his stated "beliefs" and "positions" to the desires of these people with immense wealth and power, scares the hell out of me.

If Mitt looked like the felon from Alaska in the post above, we could at least identify him and avoid him. But there are low-info people who admire wealth and power in an individual, regardless of how it was attained. And there are many others who know better, but will still support an empty suit with a smile as their leader, as long as he has a certain capital letter following his name which designates his party label .

Willard Milton Romney (R) should be scary to every voter in this country, regardless of their politics or personal ideology. This isn't hyperbole by any standard. It is my conjecture based on facts that too many are ignored about the group(s) that brought us the puppet president, George W. Bush.

Bush also looked "respectable, religious, and 'Presidential'" in the personal and media packaging that Rove, et al. provided in his campaigns.

When I look closely at that smirk, I see lots of bad things--- much worse than a white supremacy tattoo or symbol of death. I see perpetual war, extinction of the middle class, and continuous transfer of wealth to the plutocrats.

I honestly don't believe that Mitt Romney will be elected President in November without fraud and shenanigans beyond anything we've ever seen in our society, but it worries me that there are so many people who would vote down-ticket and in subsequent elections for other front men with the same intentions as Romney and George W. Bush to represent the interests of the Point-Oh-Oh-One Percent.

Ok, rant over. Now it's time to watch college football for the 10 or 12 hours.

You are spot on. His total lack of empathy for the families of those Americans killed in Libya was on full display this past week. Utter lack.

When it is openly discussed that a person's "handlers" are making an effort to "humanize" him (or her), it should be abundantly clear to everyone that there's a serious problem with this person's character.

When Mitt's family and supporters talk about what a "caring" man he is, how he has on many occasions stepped in to help friends, neighbors, or church members "in need," I think we can assume that these "friends," "neighbors," and "church members" are all in the same socio-economic class as the Romneys. They have no idea, nor do they really care, about the day-to-day issues faced by the middle class and poor people in this country.

Another example of this man's lack of empathy and character: when he last ran for President, he was asked why none of his five sons had stepped forward to serve in the military and he said they were "serving their country by helping me with my campaign." What an insult to the families who have members putting their lives on the line every day, or who have members who have been killed or maimed actually "serving" their country. And, lest we forget, it is mostly lower income people with few other options (economically or educationally) who end up fighting the wars that these rich Republican assholes start to keep the military industrial complex churning out even more money for them.

This man should not be allowed anywhere near the White House. The Neo-cons responsible for the unjustifiable Iraq war are already controlling his so-called "foreign policy."

I've known a lot of very social trust-funders who do this kind of thing to themselves. One thing you can be sure of: this sort of body mod is a sure indicator that the person intends never to seek gainful employment. It's either a criminal or a rich kid.

Well, professors are a bit different. Academia has a high tolerance for weirdos, especially if they are tenured weirdos whose research is well respected. Disclaimer: my spouse is a college professor, and a bit of a weirdo. I still wouldn't, however, advise someone who doesn't currently have a tenure track job to start into heavy body mod just yet. The most recent job my spouse landed brought in over 300 applications. With numbers like that (and those are typical in many fields) you can't really afford to alienate anyone for any reason.

I forgot about Toad's other kid. The Palin's are so promiscuous, and it says a lot about their lack of morals. Then they try to put up a facade to everyone about being such good and faithful "Christians" with high moral standards. Really, they are the worse kind of fake "Christian's" who are so hypocritical that it really calls into question the intelligence and gullibility of her cult members who truly believe she is who she pretends to be. Reading comments posted on C4P is really an eye opener that clearly exhibits their naivety and complete lack of understanding of politics, although they think completely the opposite. They all seem to feel they have a strong grasp and understanding of politics and know exactly what Sarah is thinking at the moment and exactly how she feels on any issue. Thats beside thinking she's a genius and is exactly the one who can "save the country". According to them, if Obama wins the election there will not be another Presidential election, and the country will turn to communism.

this dude's face honestly just makes me more confused. but i still think chris brown MUST have known people would associate his new NECK tatt with rihanna. being that he is a public figure, and MUST have foreseen this possible reaction, well i think that kinda makes his tattoo "intentions" moot (and his tatt artist not very good, i speak as a tattooed person myself...)

  13. Speaking of football...

I hope you will all join me in cheering for my LSU Tigers to kick the ever-living shit out of the University of Idaho Vandals on Saturday night. For obvious reasons.

The other big (big? Ha!) game is Vanderbilt against, get this, the Presbyterian Blue Hose. lol But hey, Vandy gets beaten up week-in week-out in the SEC, so they a break every now and then.

If you're an alum of Presbyterian, I sincerely apologize for belittling your football team---I'm sure it's a great school and all that. But my Vanderbilt Commodores get picked on so much in football in the SEC, we just don't get to be a bully very often like my other alma mater LSU does almost every week.

    Go LSU! Go Vandy!

Rest assured, Vandy is no longer perceived as the doormat of the SEC. James Franklin put a stop to that chatter. They should have beaten South Carolina and will ¨beat the stink out of¨ Presbyterian with their second and third stringers. The new chatter is the hillbillies in Knoxville will poach Coach Franklin away from Vandy if Derek Dooley doesn´t deliver this year. Now that would sting.

The University of Idaho does not belong anywhere near an SEC stadium. I fear for them.

LSU´s marching band could stomp the Vandals.

My theory would be is that he's feeling like he's being overtaken by something he can't control and in HIS mind, there's no hope.
