Rachel Maddow reports on the wild conspiracy theories partly responsible for the protests in the Middle East and Paul Ryan's connection to those who have fomented those conspiracy theories in the past.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

As usual I turn to Rachel Maddow to help explain just what is happening in the Middle East right now, and find myself amazed that the roots of the unrest can be traced directly back to those who support the Republican party, and are now closely associated with the VP candidate on the 2012 ticket.

But then again, why should I be surprised by that?

No one better to explain politics and world events than Rachel Maddow. No one. Period.
This might be slightly off topic, but Romney's deplorable gaffe last week over events in the Middle East will not be his last. The man is clueless and is running for president solely because it's been a goal of his. For, apparently, decades.
He just wants to be the CEO of the country. Not dabble in policy or effective changes, but just to be the CEO of America. Sickening.

Also too, the Mormon church/bishops have been trying to get a Mormon in the WH for decades.

Karl Rove's Super PAC American Crossroads is the first out with an ad trying to use the embassy attacks to hit Obama, issuing the laughably hypocritical charge that Obama didn't suspend campaigning after Ambassador Stevens was killed. The web ad also goes kitchen-sink to try and suggest the president is somehow negligent regarding US foreign policy.

By the way the "Obama skips briefings" charge comes from everyone's favorite torture-monger, Marc Thiessen, and is of course, BS. Previous shamelessness from Rove's ad-makers here.

    Hillary SHINES!

    ---
Clinton speaks at the 7-minute mark. She has shone throughout this tragedy and tension, as Dan Klaidman reports in a must-read:

--Through it all, Hillary Clinton was a source of strength for her wounded department, employees say. She moved back and forth between public appearances and private internal diplomacy, showing her trademark combination of resolve, empathy, and hyper-competence. She began at State, looking drawn but determined, calling the events in Benghazi “an attack that should shock the conscience of people of all faiths around the world.” Later that morning she stood by President Obama at the White House, looking alternately stoic and stricken. Then the president and his secretary of state traveled to Foggy Bottom where they met with shocked employees. Those who saw Clinton in action this week say it was in the more private, intimate moments where she was at her best.--

I never, ever, ever thought I'd say this: but Hillary Clinton's composure and competence and humility over the past four years as secretary of state make me want to see her president one day.

    http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/09/beyond-the-campaign-the-country.html

The deaths of four Americans in Libya this week tested the resolve of Hillary Clinton and her employees. Daniel Klaidman on what happened inside the State Department as the events unfolded.

In the meantime, in Sydney, Australia, Muslims have taken to the street chanting " Obama, Obama, we liked Osama. And may all who criticize our prophet be beheaded." Yes, from the peaceful religion. Of course, this is a smaller group and does NOT represent all Muslims. But if you think fundamentalist Muslims are not a threat to world peace, you are sadly mistaken. And you could say that other religions have extremists but generally they are not threatening to behead people or engage in suicide bombings. Even mainstream Muslims know this is a big problem. So why do fellow liberals minimize it and talk about how peaceful they are? if Iran was not threatening to blow Israel off the map, then perhaps no one would mind if they had nuclear weapons. But the leaders loudly and consistently talk this way about Israel and America and the UK.

Mitt mishandled this whole thing though. He's an idiot. I prefer Obamas approach but I'm not naive about what a threat religious zealots are.

Iran never threatened to blow Israel off the map except in the minds of those who benefit from such a mistranslation and misinterpretation. Personally, I think it would advance world peace if Iran had a nuclear weapon and I'm far more concerned by Israel's nuclear weapons. How safe would you feel if America wasn't a nuclear power? I think the Iranian people deserve to feel a bit safer from American politicians such as John McCain and from Christian jihadists.

Israel is the only country in the middle east to have nuclear weapons and I believe they are exempt from inspection. Why? Are there no Israeli zealots?

And before anyone reminds me that "god gave Israel to the Jews" let me give you my mother's retort: The native American's god gave them Boston, but I'm not moving out."

Not surprised, not surprised at all. America is deeply divided, but the center still holds more to the left - as long as the conservative Right hold more value in capitalism than social issues - we may pull out of this dive.

Romney/Paul terrify me more than McCain/Palin ever did. They have bigger, more motivated backing than 2008, and the right wing nuts are foaming at the mouth at the thought of another term of the scary black foreigner in the White House. I can't believe how much hate so many Americans can have. The same people that end their sentences with "God Bless".

And Romney and Ryan want to bring them back.

If they win, if other Republicans win, this beautiful, shiny, new girl in 2012 will go back to those days, too. This new, incipient woman will be forced back into that ungodly mould.

A question I asked of a few friends earlier today:

What two people is Romney looking like?
(Not 'looking' as in physical appearance, but in character and actions)

Of my 8 friends -- no one was able to answer both but a few did say Palin. When I gave them the two names -- they agreed. It was quite the interesting discussion and all the compariable characteristics. More people should be

First: Sarah Palin which I know you can all see the similarities. The lying, the playing victim (boo hoo, the president is running negative ads, etc.), the lack of knowledge of politics and the history of it and when you consider he's been a governor and has run for president for years, he's had massive amounts of time to learn but has had no interest. They both wanted the 'titles'. You can fill in any other blanks as there are many.

The second: George W. Bush. Again for many reasons. The first of which jumped at me today when it was said that Romney has taken the day off of campaigning to spend it at 'home'. Really?? Another day after having taken a number off last week after the convention. Another day at 'home'. We've seen many pictures of the lake sports, boats, etc. Clear indication like Dubya -- spends enormous amounts of time at 'homee/vacation houses' -- days off -- when he has major important business to conduct as in he only has just over 50 days to the election.

It further confirms how lax he would be. Think of what we have learned more of this week -- the further evidence of earlier indications of 9/11 to which Bush and his administration ignored.

Work is not a priority -- that's someone else's job.

Maddow agreed, noting that Romney’s response seemed to demonstrate a sort of “inappropriate temperament” for someone so close to a sensitive role. In fact, his reaction made her question the U.S.’s vetting process for our would-be leaders.

She then turned the discussion over to the argument that Romney’s foreign policy plans don’t matter and won’t form a huge part of this election, asking Robinson if this line of thinking still stands in light of the current turmoil overseas. He felt this has never been the case for an election, because foreign policy will always matter, there will be crises and there will always be crises.

Gryphen, you always seem to be so keen on this Obama character but did you know that Mittens recently pointed out publicly that Obama is going to lie during the debates?

Wow. That's terrible! Why can't the president tell the truth in the debates? Of course, it's not the worst thing in the world because Mittens reassures us that when Obama lies, Mittens can just ignore the questions and talk about whatever he wants to. That tactic seemed to work pretty well in the 2008 VP debate, didn't it? Whew!

But now there's a growing fear that Obama will pull a straight razor out of his boot during the debate and cut Mittens three different ways: long, deep and often. I don't know about you, but I don't want MY president to be physically attacking his opponent. It's just unAmerican!

And what about the rumor that Obama wears a Tec9 machine pistol - with a high capacity magazine - under his suit jacket? ! Talk about Chicago Thug Life!!

And you can't expect Mittens to perform his best at the debates when he has to worry about a pack of Obama's dark-skinned henchmen jumping onto the stage to beat Mittens with tire irons, Chicago White Sox souvenir Bat Day bats and wooden legs stolen from disabled veterans. Mittens tried to warn us Team Obama was going to get ugly!

Ya know, the more you think about the mayhem that could occur at the debates, the more you realize Mittens would be wise just to call them off completely and replace them with a series of appearances on Sean Hannity's and Mike Huckabee's shows on Fox.

  17. Thanks to everyone in this thread who provided all the links! I run a forum on which most of the men (and there are only 4 of us women) are very conservative. I love posting this stuff for them, and a couple of them are even coming around a bit, at least toward the center!

As for Maddow--she's the only newscaster I know of who doesn't just leap into her end point (like O'Reilly or Limbaugh, who start with their end point and just keep screaming). Maddow sets up the whole story, fact after fact, without any editorial comment, just as she does here. Then.... BAM. And when she gets to the point, she gets to the damn point. Short, swift, accurate, and devastating. I sure would hate to have to debate her.

(Apologies if this shows up twice--when Google redirects me to log in, it usually loses my comment.)

Oh my living lord. That was incredibly scary.
Holy cow. Why isn't this front and center?
Because how many people watch Rachel Maddow and can follow her? My husband came in from the shop last night and asked me if I knew about the American ambassador being drug through the streets like a trophy, cause all the guys at work were saying that yesterday. I pretty much lost it and then filled him in on the way it went down. But the scary thing is that the complete ijits he works with only watch Fox News and are spreading the most despicable, ignorant things. How can we combat this? I get so depressed sometimes. Luckily I can read the comments here and know I'm not totally alone.
But I tell you, I get so frustrated by the utter stupidity all around, that my stomach is constantly in knots. The universe help us all if somehow Governor Romney walks away with the election.

I think it's why this transfer ceremony had such a visceral impact.

Peggy Noonan, Maddow and Joan Walsh at Salon.com brought attention to Mitt's smirks. His smirk captured walking away from the podium post smearint the president was like Palin when she quit spewing word salad. Those smirks speak to me that they are smug for pulling one over on people aka lying. Their inappropriate emotional affect is telling.

Now Romney is setting up Obama as THE liar. Mitt's MO is blatantly apparent.
