Father of slain Ambassador would like people to stop using his son's death as a "campaign issue."

Ambassador Christoper Stevens.
Courtesy of the Daily Mail:

The father of Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya who was murdered in a terrorist attack in Benghazi last month, has said it would be 'abhorrent' to turn his son's death into political fodder in the battle for the White House.

'It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue,' said Jan Stevens, 77. 'The security matters are being adequately investigated.

'We don’t pretend to be experts in security. It has to be objectively examined. That’s where it belongs. It does not belong in the campaign arena.'

Christopher Steven's father is right of course, and if this were not a campaign season perhaps an investigation could go forward without people jumping to politically convenient conclusions in order to attack the President. The Republicans have been using this terrible incident to make the ridiculous case that President Obama is soft on defense, or wanted to hide the fact that this was a terrorist attack, almost literally since the day that it happened. Which of course compelled the Democrats to fire back that the Republicans actually cut funding for embassy security.

Of course as I have already pointed out even IF there had been increased security it most likely would NOT have saved the Ambassador's life. However that is simply a little thing we call "facts" and THOSE do not seem to be of any interest to the modern Republican party.

But right now none of that should even be the issue.

This man lost his son, and others lost their loved ones as well.

Perhaps it is time to put political opportunism on the back burner and let these people learn the truth about what happened on that terrible September 11 after all of the evidence has been examined thoroughly, and NOT simply make up scenarios in order to score political points against one side or the other.

O/T have you seen this? http://bottomline.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/15/14454865-koch-brothers-to-workers-vote-for-romney-or-suffer-the-consequences?lite

Lovely thing to do to workers who are probably already stressed about the economy...

It truly is sad watching this on national tv, my heart breaks for those family members. Robme will indeed sink to the lowest depths of morality and has shown this over and over, it is disgusting.

It brings to mind the segment on 60 min last night about the innovative judge in Texas working to salvage the lives of these returning vets committing federal crimes for the first time in their lives....all due to PST. Wouldn't it be something if GW Bush did something substantial with all his wealth and free time??
Look at Clinton and much aligned Carter...they kept on going and continue making huge improvements to the masses well beyond. If anyone should be doing anything he could to promote the healing....physical/mental of these thousands of men and women he is personally responsible for sending into a bullshit war, its him and his demon VP and Sec of Defense. How these men look in the mirror each day is beyond me...karma will prevail.

Bless his heart for speaking up while in mourning.

The spin that the WH knew of a terrorist attack and chose to do nothing is absurd. It would have been another chamce for our president to do right had a planned attack had been known by intel.

Joan Walsh wrote that Giuliani and Gingrich are
fostering a conspiracy theory. They are repeating saying "the unraveling" of Obama's failed foreign policy that Ryan repeatedly said during his debate.

I couldn't agree with you more. It was ridiculous that Romney came out so quickly after we all learned of the attack and used it for political purposes. The bodies of those who died hadn't even arrived to their families to mourn their loss. I was also disappointed that others, including the Democrats, didn't speak up and condemn those who accused the President for the attack.

I sincerely hope the Democrats get involved in the investigation into Mr. Stevens death, and it's not just the Republicans doing the investigating, as it is right now.

Something about this horrible incident doesn't sit right with me....I can't explain the feeling in my gut.

First of all, it happened on 9/11, which is a day the Republicans are constantly reminding us of, like they own it. Also, a dangerous and deadly attack right before a presidential election in which the Republicans would like to portray Pres. Obama as weak on defense and national security. Then the fact that it happened in Libya, which Pres. Obama had a hand in liberating. And one of the victims is a personal friend of the Clintons. And the Republicans need a Congressional investigation immediately, before any facts are known or reports are written. And then Romney makes a bizarre statement even before the attacks happened! It's like he knew the attack was coming, but spoke too soon and had to walk it back.

The leader of Libya said words to the effect of, "A forgeign country is involved in the attack, but it's not Saudi Arabia or Quatar." I believe people in the middle east speak cryptically, and was the "foreign country" the USA? Republicans are very close with Saudi Arabia and Quatar, so why did the leader of Libya name those countries specifically??? Would Karl Rove and Co. (Rumsfeld, Cheney, etc.) do something like this to destabilize the region and influence the election? We will never know, because there are probably so many layers between any attackers and the persons who ordered it. But something doesn't seem right to me.

  8. I am so ashamed to say I hadn't even considered how this man's family felt about his death having become such a political issue.

It makes me that much angrier about Ryan having the cornnuts to tell Biden the WH should have provided more security when HIS BITCH ASS VOTED TO CUT THE FUNDUNG FOR SECURITY.

I veer toward calmness and always tried to not allow political differences to dictate my opinion of people. But what the republican party represents NOW? I'm sorry- if you stand for that, I don't think I want you in my life.

This will all backfire of the Repubs. The American people do not like exploiting a national tragedy for political purposes.

I feel badly that I had not considered the effect of using the deaths in Libya as political opportunism either on the families.

    Shame on Romney!

Larry O Donnell just did the Ryan dish washing story and Romney snubbing Barbara Walters on the "View". This shows how much they care about the 47 percent and Women, especially Liberal Women like Whoopi and Joy Behar.

The Stephens Family and that of the former Navy Seal's Family is just heart wrenching. Mitt and Ryan will stoop to anything in their desperate campaign to win. These brave men and their grieving families deserve their wishes be heard, and yet today, Romney's surrogate said it's an "issue" but not "political" as an excuse to keep exploiting it.

I'm seething mad that Hillary Clinton issued a statement that she takes full responsibility for what happened that tragic night. She threw herself under the bus to try to quell the Republican witch hunt. She's giving them one more non issue to muddy the investigation and blame the Obama Administration.

    WTH was she thinking?

  13. Hillary has stepped up and claimed responsibility. Says as Sec. of State security was her responsibility, not the White House.

Wouldn't it be great if Jan Stevens could be in the audience at the debate tonight, and confront Rmoney with this request to STOP taking advantage of his son's death, as a "town hall" question?
