Presidential Debate Open Thread. Get ready to R-U-MMMBLE!!! Update!

"Let me just say right now, I got this."
I am sure I don't have to tell all of you that after the last debate between the President and Romney, where the President was shocked by the completely fact free debating style of his opponent, that THIS debate has taken on an incredible amount of significance.

It would seem to me that the town hall format for tonight's debate favors the President, but Romney has demonstrated himself to be an incredible opportunist who will take advantage of any chance to change his stated positions to fit the expectations of the crowd. Essentially if left unrestrained by the kind of fact checking provided by Joe Biden during the VP debate, Romeny will present himself as all things to all people.

So the President is going to have to be not only on HIS game, but nailing Romney down on his positions as well. Unless of course moderator Candy Crowley is willing to take a stand for truth and refuse to let Mitt the Twit bullshit his way through yet another piece of political performance art.

I will, as usual, be tweeting my impressions during the debate which you all can check here. I will also try and keep up with the comments here so that you can share your thoughts and feelings as well.

While we are waiting I thought I would share with you this picture of a beaming Michelle Obama, who sent in her absentee ballot yesterday.

The President did as well, which I understand is the FIRST time that a sitting President of the United States has ever taken the opportunity to vote early. Something by the way that I think we ALL should take advantage of just as soon as early voting starts in our area.

So get your popcorn out kids, and the beverage of your choice, and let's get ready to witness the rematch of the century. Let's just hope that this time the Champ is ready to go all Mike Tyson on Romney's ass if he starts using cheap shots or low blows.

Update: The moment Obama won the debate:

  13. I'm still convinced that Obama was instructed to purposely throw the first debate. My partner and I have both commented that Obama didn't even *attempt* to change his basic tactics during the debate. I think most politicians, let alone anyone as smart as him, would know enough to try new techniques if they were taking a beating in a debate. The fact that he didn't even attempt to change course during the debate makes me think that he had been specifically instructed *not* to.

When you think about it, it makes sense. Before the first debate, Obama was widely touted as the greatest orator since Lincoln while it pretty much sounded like all Mitt had to do was avoid accidentally setting his podium on fire. If Obama won it would have gotten a giant "so what? He was SUPPOSED to win" from both liberals and conservatives alike.

By letting Mitt win Round 1, Obama's campaign has created an opponent that actually seems to be worth beating to some people (yes, they had to do this themselves - Mittens certainly wasn't stacking up on his own!) Nobody is impressed when you jump over a six-inch hurdle - you have to raise the hurdle up a bit before anybody starts to call you a good jumper.

My prediction is that Obama will absolutely eviscerate Mitt in this debate (looks like that's what he's doing so far! Booyah!) and continue to trounce him in the third. The only difference is that now it's exciting and a comeback and news worth reporting, rather than simply "what was supposed to happen".

  35. During the last debate when we all assumed our president would provide nothing less than an absolute bloodletting against Romney, my beloved and I had a laid back, humorous approach toward watching it. We had friends over, had it catered with fun foods, etc. Then it was dismal. Nobody was laughing, nobody was eating the Obama Po'Bama sandwiches- it was just no fun.

For the VP debate, we had a smaller group and made the food ourselves. We knew Biden had the kind of attitude which would not allow for Ryan's asinine lies and fake anecdotes. And it was fun- we even had to abandon our drinking game shortly after it started in order to stay conscious for the rest of it.

But THIS debate. . .we have approached with great trepidation. Although we ate truly stunned so many tens of millions in America seem to back Romney in the polls- the truth is this is a close race. I feel if Romney gains any more momentum tonight, the republican powers that be (the money guys) might just feel confident enough to try stealing this election, too. They did it once and got away with it- and look how our country suffered.

No, tonight Menschie and I are alone- no guests, no party noisemakers, no plates of "limbaugh cookies" (sugar cookies with "oxy contin" iced on them.)

Tonight we are solemn and scared. We NEED the bloodletting we thought we were getting at the first debate. We know our President has it in him. Run wild, Mr. President. Tonight, take one look at that smug son of a bitch and run WILD.

We would in no way benefit from this. They want to run the pipeline through America because Canada does not ahve a port deep enough for a supertanker, AND some of the Canadian states know the danger and do not want the pipeline runnig through THEIR areas. OK, this town hall meeting was a group of 20 undecided voters that represent the American populace. Correct me if I'm wrong, but one African American, two Latino's and 17 Whites IS NOT a representative sample.

I think their questions were great, and President Obama clearly connected and answered their questions. Romney kept cutting people off, acting like a fool over allotted time, and evading the answers people needed.

The republicans are complaining that gas is too high and it's Obama's fault, they're saying people can't afford to go to and from work. Well pick one and stick with it. Do unemployed people need gas to go to work?

That may be a "representative sample" of stupid in this country. How can anyone not know at this point who they will vote for? The GOP has been in our face for two years now. Ironic that the Republicans are complaining about gas prices! When George W. Bush was president, gas prices flirted with $5.00 a gallon here in northern Michigan. Remember when Michele Bachmann said that gas cost $1.78 a gallon when President Obama took office? Maybe when George W. Bush took office but then gas prices rose to the stratosphere. Prices may be high now but not nearly as high as when the GOP was last in the White House.
