Romney campaign forced to stop using story of slain Navy SEAL after mother complains. Update: Now friend weighs in as well.

This from Buzzfeed:

At a town hall here Wednesday, Mitt Romney re-told a story he first revealed earlier this week about meeting one of the Navy SEALs who would later be killed in the attacks on the Benghazi consulate.

Romney has used the account in recent days on the stump to demonstrate the courage of Americans, in particular the troops: Upon hearing that the consulate was under attack, Glenn Doherty, 42, headed toward the action to try to defend it.

It's a compelling story, offering a surprisingly personal link between the candidate and the tragedy in Libya — but it's one the SEAL's mother wants him to stop telling.

Wednesday morning, NBC's Boston affiliate reported that Doherty's mother thought Romney was taking advantage of her son's death.

"I don't trust Romney," Barbara Doherty told WHDH 7. "He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama."

Obviously the mother is NOT a supporter of Romney's and obviously found his use of her son's name for political gain as repulsive as the rest of us did. Her response resulted in Romney's people telling their candidate to stop using the story at campaign stops immediately.

Asked whether Romney would continue to tell the story, a campaign aide told BuzzFeed he would not, now that he knew the mother's wishes.

Kevin Madden added, "Governor Romney was inspired by the memory of meeting Glen Doherty and shared his story and that memory. We respect the wishes of Mrs. Doherty though."

Of course Romney's use of his connection to this Navy SEAL is part of the Republicans newest attempt to smear the Obama campaign by claiming they were complicit in the death of Ambassador Stevens, and the Navy SEAL's there to protect him. And are also currently launching another Congressional witch hunt led by their favorite attack dog, Darrell Issa.

You may remember Issa as the same vicious asshole who tried to use the Fast and Furious debacle to smear the President, and even went so far as to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt for not allowing himself to be bullied. Eventually of course Holder was cleared of all of the trumped up charges against him.

When I first heard Romney tell of his very tenuous connection to this dead soldier, and then squint his eyes a bunch of times in an attempt to produce a tear or two, I felt sick to my stomach.  This soldier's mother is quite right not to trust Mr. Romney, in that he will essentially use ANY means, no matter how disgusting or devious, to win this election.

Update: Navy SEAL's friend recalls meeting with Romney much differently:

But one of Glen Doherty's best friends remembered Doherty's impression of this meeting much differently.

He last saw Doherty a week before the final mission to Libya. "I stayed in his house (in California), we paddled out in the ocean together, spent some good quality time."

Ellefsen said Doherty recalled meeting Mitt Romney years ago, but the account was much different from what the Presidential candidate retold in Iowa.

According to Ellefsen, Romney introduced himself to Doherty four separate times during the gathering.

"He said it was very comical," Ellefsen said, "Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale."

Ellefsen said Doherty remembered Romney as robotic.

"He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen's face."

Ellefsen described Glen Doherty as a humble, non-political guy, and said it was ironic for him to be used during a presidential campaign.

"Whether it be Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Libertarian, it doesn't make a difference. Because this guy is using our great friend, our humble, and honorable great friend...who is truly larger than life...He has become part of the soapbox routine for politics in a presidential race."

Jesus Christ just how low will Romney go in this election?

Shameless prick!

You only have 1/2 the story.....one of Glenn's best friends was there at that party when Robme met him, here is how he tells it. Robme approached Glenn 4 times in a matter of an hour or so, reintroducing himself each time as if it was the first time they met. Glenn thought it was pathetic, he was like a robot, he had no idea he was repeating himself. I hope this side of the story gets more attention as Glenn thought Robme was pathetic and creepy. As for Issa...he is one of the biggest douche bag liars in Congress, another one we all hope will disappear. Holder should demand a public apology and it would be nice if Obama brought that up sometime.

Anderson Cooper, whom I've come to hate, has "Mom of Sean Smith, killed in #Benghazi, is furious at admin, says they've forgotten her and broke promises to keep her informed @AC360 8p" (his tweet posted today).

There is the issue of the investigations which are still ongoing -- it's not like it's down the block and you turn left and there it is. It's also a fact that the Hearing started in Washington today. This society of 'instant gratification' -- give me a fucking break.

Anderson is also making this political in that he's still pissed he got called out in and by the media for the reporting & disclosing he did of the Journal of Amb. Stevens. The parents were not pleased and he was called out either by the WH or the State Dept. -- not sure which.

Anderson dishes it out but he's extremely thin-skinned as he whining about Star Jones, etc. I have lost total respect for him. He whines like a 2 year old -- he obsesses about all the housewives shows, jersey shore, boo boo, etc. But where he totally lost me is in his empty words of 'keeping them honest'. I could count on one hand of how many he's truly followed up on. He's a snake in the grass and his reporting has tanked. Add that he had to get a daily revolving co-host for his talk show for the 2nd season. He's crap but the network didn't want to admit it since they promoted him for so long.

The mother just said 'The big shots' up there...that's a sure way to get attention -- NOT. Sorry, I know she lost a son but. She said that they promised on the day the body was returned to let her know what happened. Let's stop the election and the President will go investigate himself.

Guess you can tell -- I'm not pissed at all.

Soledad O'Brien is far better than Cooper by leaps and bounds.

Here's a post by DailyKos today of her interview with Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz, who I believe is co-Chair with Izza on the Congressional Hearing.

CNN's Soledad O'Brien: "Is it true that you voted to cut the funding for embassy security?"

Rep. Chaffetz: "Absolutely. Look we have to make priorities and choices in this country."

Just shows that the hypocrites are making it political again -- another White House witch hunt -- by Izza.

I detest Mitt Romney as much as I do Sarah Palin. They are the scum of the earth. Why any woman would vote for these assholes - Romney and Ryan - just makes me shake my head. Neither of them is in our corner. Pay attention before you go to vote, but do vote!

  5. It gets better, positively Palinesque. Apparently the Romneys stumbled in to a private Christmas party--by accident or design, we'll never know--and stuck around long enough to become acquainted with the person they have currently been using as a campaign prop. Reading the Doherty family friend's account above makes me even more suspicious that they actually crashed the party in order to establish this particular, very useful, acquaintance.

Yes, and from a media person touring with the campaign, he is also changing facts as he tells the story each time. Not probably on purpose, but because he can't keep his lies straight.

He jumped in when it happened to slam the President, he KNEW this guy was killed, remembers it all so well "You can imagine how I felt when I heard he lost his life..... and he was in a safe place, away from danger, instead of hunkering down in safety, he ran to aid his fellow Americans, that what we do",,,(paraphrasing)

Gee, you'd think he'd send the mother a sympathy card, phone call, flowers or a pancake baked by Ann on the Today show, BEFORE politicizing the LIE of his deep and abiding relationship.

Screw You, Mitt. You ran to France when Americans your age were fighting. Coward.

I cut some slack for a grieving mother. But Romney gets my contempt. If he wanted to burble from his campaign stage about a distant, brief encounter with a recently deceased man, all Mitt (or a minion) had to do was contact the family to see if there was any objection. But, NO, Mitt has to stumble through yet another "oh, was I offensive" PR mess. And, remind everyone of Mitt's dismally immature response to the Benghazi attack.

Mitt is a twit. His campaign staff are over-paid, over-bonus-ed MORONS.

John McCain is correct. Sarah Palin was a better pick than Mitt.

Who the fuck does not know the people, date ,address and time of the party they were suppose to be invited to. who is just sitting around in party clothes and decides to stroll on over to this party? His story like so many of his lies makes NO SENSE. How in Gods name can Anybody even consider voting for this Psycho?

  12. The friend spoke first, as everyone above noted. Romney ignores "friends" - his campaign was forced to listen to the mother when the media called him on it.

Probably the main difference between Palin and Romney is that Romney is running for President - Palin was not. This makes Romney 50 times as scarey as Palin (given that John McCain survived the past 4 years)

Romney admitted in his telling of the story that he and Ann crashed a party to which they were not invited. Saw people on the porch of the house across the street and went over and had dinner.

Did he not even know his neighbors but attended their Christmas party.

Is something missing in Romney's gray matter?

  15. I am not surprised Rmoney introduced himself four times in the same robotic manner and didn't recognize the man every time.

Isn't that one of the signs of narcissism or sociopathy or something? Being so self-absorbed you simply can't be bothered to remember anyone's face or name unless it suits your selfish purpose?

When Ann said that she was worried about Mitt's mental health if he becomes President, I thought that she probably didn't use the word she really meant, something referring to stress/stresses. Now, I think she used precisely the right word. Mitt is all about Mitt. He literally sees no-one else. He appears to have been pretty well protected in the past so his defenses against attack were adequate. As President, he will have to take constant criticism from all sides. I don't think he will be able to handle it well.

Ann Romney mentioned she was concerned with Mitt's mental well being. She should have him evaluated. It would take 30 days to evaluate whether he suffers from multiple personalities.

Get it?? Get it??? 30 days!!! Nov 10!!
Election is over!! He was absent -- He Lost!!

But you know of course I'm concerned with the mental well being of Mitt!!

Something important to know about Glenn Doherty is that he was an advisory board member of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF).

    "IN MEMORIAM

Glen Doherty, Dedicated MRFF Advisory Board Member and former Navy SEAL, Killed in Libya Consulate Attack

Former Navy SEAL and hardened combat veteran Glen Doherty, 42, was killed in an armed Salafi-Jihadist assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Glen was one of the first MRFF Advisory Board members and was a passionate core contributor to the fight to prevent a fundamentalist Christian coup within the United States Armed Forces.
Glen lived and died believing in the righteous cause of religious tolerance and dialogue among all peoples and faiths around the globe.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation offers its most sincere condolences to Glen Doherty's family."

    Ann cooks just like Sarah!!

"Tell us about these," host George Stephanopoulos said proceeding to introduce her from a separate set away from the kitchen despite the burning cakes.

"They're burning," she replied. "You've got to turn the griddle down."

Yes, she's standing in front of the griddle, but "you people" got to turn the griddle down.

I guess Consuela, the cook, had the day off at Ann's houses, any of em all of em.

I was very disappointed tonight to see Glen Doherty's sister talk on CNN with either Erin Burnett or Anderson Cooper, she was very nice but when asked if she agreed with her mother's comments and how Romney is using his death for political gains, she said no, I couldn't believe it! She said her mother is very upset and almost snubbed her comments off as a woman who is just too upset to make a rash statement...she pissed me off.

Look, here's the deal with Romney...

He'll say anything he has to say,
he'll go as low as he has to in order to get elected.

He has no REAL position on anything - because he doesn't NEED one.

Grover Norquist said some time ago, something to the effect of "we don't need a candidate that can THINK... we just need someone who can sign his name."

That's what you get if/when you elect Mitt Romney:
an empty suit that will do whatever the Republican/Conservative machine tells him to do.

    The Republican/Conservative machine:
    people who are not elected.
We move to a place where voting no longer matters, but then, some say we're already there...

According to the Washington Post, Issa's hearing committed a breach of national security by outing the CIA on C-Span. Check today's edition. This is very serious- stupidity of a few putting all at risk. Most countries would consider this a crime! Life is not a reality show: the public does not need to know details like this. Do these goons not realize that what they say and do is instantly seen and heard all around the world and that they have some pretty bad enemies out there?
