You know this has been bothering me for weeks now. Anybody have a good answer?

Can it simply be explained by the mountains of money spent on his behalf?

The ignorance of the GOP base?

Or is it because of the underlying racist attitude that many still have toward our first African American president?

Or perhaps, a combination of all three?

Your thoughts?

Brain washing? Stockholm Syndrome? The educational system? Chemicals in the water? Too many prescription meds (being mixed)?

    How else to explain:

    - the middle age white small business owner who is struggling to survive and raise a family - who supports Mitt Romney

    - the retired white woman who saw her retirement income tank, her health care bills go through the roof, and her reliance upon SS and Medicare/Medicade who supports Mitt Romney

    - the young Wiccan mom working full time in the health care field, to care for a house-full of kids - who supports Mitt Romney.

    - the retired Vietnam vet native man who supports Mitt Romney.

These are people I personally know. It just mystifies me.

      A woman I know:

Her husband is self-employed and they rely mostly on her salary, which is, of course, earned at a public library. Her adult son is on SSI/disability and by the time her tween daughter graduates, she will have had enough years of service to retire. She has numerous medical issues, both physical and mental. All of the above, and she supports Romney.

On the other hand, there is also my grandfather- grew up in Indiana in the 30s, served in WWII, retired from GM (was in management), has accumulated a fair amount of wealth, long-time Republican- and in 2008, he voted for Obama!

If you take the tossups and add the way they're leaning and then give the tie (Virginia) to Rmoney, it's still Obama 277 and Rmoney 269. So Rmoney needs to turn a big state. Like Pennsylvania.

That's why the voter registration fraud and the voter I.D. suppression laws are so important to the right.

A crazy media world that can't stay on one issue long enough for facts to sink in.

Try out Milton Bass's column in today's Berkshire Eagle about Romney as governor. He was mediocre -- and, as has been stated, no one in Mass. is going to vote to make him president. He was so bad that, after four Republican governors in a row, we now proudly have Deval Patrick in his second Democratic term.

Who could vote for someone who refuses to release his tax returns, even though his father released twelve years' of his own? Who could vote for a man who stashes his cash in off-shore accounts?
Who could vote for a man who won't give specifics for most of his agenda?

Ignorant voters, topped off with a strong ration of racism. If President Obama were white, (which he is, as much as he's black), there would be no contest.

I wish I could come up with an answer. But I'm stumped. I just don't get it, either.

Especially the people who say Obama didn't deliver the change they voted for last time, so they're voting for Romney - AKA the second coming of George W. Bush, the status quo they claim to have previously voted against.

  8. Like many things in life, there is no easy answer. It isn't simple. It isn't any one thing. It is many little things combined.

So I'd say, a little bit of all of the above, some more than others, but they all add up.

Let's hope they don't add up to enough electoral votes.

Willard still has two weeks to demonstrate that his Romnesia is NOT cureable, nor are his chronic lies.

I think tomorrow's debate will be significant.

All three. And many Americans (sadly) are low information voters anyway. They work hard, come home and deal with family life and try to have a little fun. They have no real idea about the candidates because they think it would take time they don't have. Or they go to their local newspaper to get their information or horrifically--- FOX. Disaster.

The idea that anyone judges the next president because of debate performances proves the point.

That's where the Governor appoints a crony to go in, disband the elected city officials, disband and take over the school district (he can even force them to merge with another district, throw any contracts into the trash, and fire whomever he pleases. Yes, Romney is a liar and has been caught lying many times. But to answer the question on whether or not Romney can win: Some people consider the lying to be less important than the financial collapse of the entire country. And so, in the final two or three weeks before the election the polls are tightening. Among likely voters it's now a tie or Romney is up slightly. The polls will move again after the final debate and looking at how the polls have bounced so far after all the debates, my guess is that Obama is in deep trouble.

So do I care? Well yes, because momentum for the cons in the US could spill over to Canada. But on the other hand, if Americans were so stupid as to elect Bush2 and Romney is even close to Obama, then perhaps the American people are so stupid that they need a good hard lesson taught to them. So maybe one more go around with a Bush2 imposter would be best. Then maybe some people will start to get it. I predict that Romney is going to win this thing and it's not really going to be all that close.
    luv from Canada.

Here's a thought. Vague, but possible. The GOP, acting as a potential Nazi party, knows the administration of GWB has been a disaster, and more or less intentionally, plots to lose the 2008 election. They run a discredited, barely capable John McCain, with a sexy dingbat with so much garbage on her plate that a victory is impossible. The guy who wins, as much white as he black, delights the country with his talent, courage, grace and erudtion. The GOP is determined to reduce him to ridicule by negating all or most all of his ambitious attempts to restore the middle class. In the next election, the GOP runs the guy who lost to the guy who won. I don't know why this happened, but you have to look at the other candidates: Herman Cain? Michelle Bachmann? Preposterous, hopeless, impossible to imagine. Now, you have running for President of the United States, a Mormon liar, whose family owns the voting machines, and who is backed by the Koch brothers and Adelson, the first who want carte blanche over the environment of the planet, and the second who wants a nuclear war with Iran. Who has not yet Googled the Mormon's White Horse Prophecy? It's the Nazis all over again. Masters of the Universe.

Some people who don't even consider themselves racist, simply CANNOT accept the fact that our president is a black man who speaks with authority and demands respect. Just to calm everyone's mind this is the latest I found on the state of the race:

    Obama: +5.7
    Obama 47.9% | Romney 42.2%

•Obama has opened up a 6-point lead over Romney in our latest poll, his largest lead yet.

•Some 8.1% of those polled said they were “not sure” whom they would vote for, also the largest percentage yet.

•Obama’s lead seemed to build after the second debate, which many mainstream media pundits believe Obama won.

•Self-described “moderates” now prefer Obama over Romney by 22 points, the second largest margin since we began polling.

•Obama holds a hefty 35-point lead among urban dwellers, and a comfortable 5-point lead in the suburbs.

If the post office screws up and sends us the ballots back instead of sending them to the City Clerk, we'll have lots of time to walk them to the City Clerk. Twice in the past seven years the ballots have come back to us because our address is on the reverse side of the envelope - not the smartest form to use but, hey, I didn't design it. This is traditional Republican territory where I live! Fortunately we were able to get the ballots to City Hall in time but that should never happen.

I have thought about this as well and I wonder if the so-called "enthusiasm gap" has anything to do with it. In short, could it be that Republican voters are more eager to respond to polls than their Democratic counterparts? If so, the results of the polls showing Romney in the lead ought to be taken as shallow comfort by the R's given the closeness of the race. Put another way, it would seem that what small portion of Democrats are polled, comprise just the proverbial tip of the iceberg where their numbers are concerned.

I for one have constantly struggled with the idea that Romney's popularity could even be anywhere near 40 percent. I just does not seem plausible where reality is concerned, lest he be buoyed by racial and religious surface tension, in which case, he United States is no further along (and perhaps beneath) its worst adversary, which is quickly becoming its own self.

I think it is because there are certain voters who absolutely refuse to believe anything except what comes from the Right Wing. When my friends think that Candy Crowley "helped" Obama in last week's debate when they saw the debate with their own eyes, then there is little hope to change their minds. It is the same mindset that allowed certain Germans to ignore the rounding up of Jews and those who spoke out against their government. (I know; I hate the Hitler references too, but this one is valid. How else do you explain people voting against their own best interests?) How else do you explain that the man who saved the country from a depression; saved the auto industry; killed Bin Laden; has decimated the Al Qaeda and signed the Lilly Ledbetter Act is fighting for his political life against a known liar?

President Barack Obama was sharing a pulpit one day with a conservative Christian leader when a revealing exchange took place.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, a conservative Christian who has taken public stands against abortion and same-sex marriage, had joined Obama for an AIDS summit. They were speaking before a conservative megachurch filled with white evangelicals.

When Brownback rose to speak, he joked that he had joined Obama earlier at an NAACP meeting where Obama was treated like Elvis and he was virtually ignored. Turning to Obama, a smiling Brownback said, “Welcome to my house!”

The audience exploded with laughter and applause. Obama rose, walked before the congregation and then declared:

“There is one thing I have to say, Sam. This is my house, too. This is God’s house.”

Historians may remember Obama as the nation’s first black president, but he’s also a religious pioneer. He’s not only changed people’s perception of who can be president, some scholars and pastors say, but he’s also expanding the definition of who can be a Christian by challenging the religious right’s domination of the national stage.

A frightening thing when the polls are this close is the voter suppression (just talk of ID keeps voters away, even if it is not required in your state). But scariest of all is just who owns and is in charge of the voting machines:

    Easy.

Romney can't steal the election (with Rove's able help) unless the election looks close. Flipping votes only works in the contestants appear to be only a couple of percentage points apart. If they are more than 5 points apart in the polls, that 10 point shift on election day will be more than suspicious.

The actual vote-flipping? Tagg Romney's company OWNS the voting machines in Ohio. They are both invested in the company that owns the tabulation software in another handful of swing states.

If disenfranchisement doesn't work, they can always change the actual vote later... as long as the election APPEARS close in the polls.

That is why half the made-in-China crap for sale on Mittens' website is not pro-Mitt and is instead anti-Obama. Mitt's greatest nightmare is that these people will stop hating our President. At that point, they will realize Mitt actually sucks and won't bother to vote at all.

I can't explain it - but it scares the heck out of me that so many Americans are this consumed by racism and hateefulness, and/or misinformed or uneducated that they are willing to sell their soul and vote against their own best interest to vote for this soulless cruel robot of a man.

I truly try every single hour of every single day to hold on to the positive thought that President Obama will be re-elected. I can't even imagine what will happen to our country if he isn't reelected.

I think the best example of how well the Fox spewed propaganda is working, is this:

Ask any 7-11 clerk if he agrees that things would be better if the very rich simply paid a FAIR SHARE of taxes.

His wide-eyed screaming response will make you step back:

"You're just JEALOUS of anyone SUCCESSFUL, and those who are JOB CREATORS!"

Coming from a person who SHOULD be the very first one to promote the idea of a rich guy paying at least what he himself pays, it is very scary to witness this.

As it comes out in the same word order as you can YouTube Sean Hannity saying, there is NO DOUBT where the hypnotic spell on this poor slob, came from.

We heard the same nonsense from the local carpenter who did work for us this spring. All about how hard the millionaires work! And how much they give to charity! This is from someone who had a really hard time 2008 and 2009 when there was little home building and renovation being done. There are always people who consistently vote against their own best interests. The Republicans have convinced them that they should vote for their betters and then they can aspire to be like them. Laughing all the way.

My 50 year old sister is the same way. She works at a small consuklting firm, and does mostly travel bookings. She thinks Obama already ruined America (by lowering her taxes, no doubt.) She went on some FB rant at me (yes, she will never actually talk to me or even email, because she loves an audience) about how hard-working the rich are and how they 'earned' every penny. Yet she insists she thinks for herself. Right, hon, whatever your far right websites tell you is what you think.

When Romney repeated that Obama wants you (the people) to belive you are stuck in your station in life, that you can't improve your life I felt fury. Obama has consistently stated the opposite!

It has been a pile of BS from Romney campaign, Prosperity etc. projecting Obama wants people poor to not working.

A friend of mine clings to that tactic that Obama wants the rich to pay for others so they can sit on their ass mooching. I can't wait to say "I told you so" to her. She also adored Palin 2 years before decing she was "evil". My friend is gullible and does not fact check.

This is the third time today that I've heard about a "personally embarrassing" Romney story coming out sometime on Monday...fingers crossed, and I hope that whomever is coming forward is doing it from a protected bunker somewhere.

On another note, the Tagg-Hart Intercivic voting machine story is now trending HOT on Forbes. It's an OpEd piece, and the writer is reporting it with a wink and a nudge, but take a read and send a tweet if you're inclined. So far nothing has turned up on the mainstream media or HuffBlow (big surprise). IT NEEDS WIDE PLAY!

The media is a major driving force in election campaigns. Positive or negative propaganda will affect each candidate but it can also work against them. If you're given positive handling by the media and you come off as a liar, well I say your chances are slim.

Overall, it's how the candidates are portrayed in the public eye. Whether the information passed on is skewed or flattering, it's up to the public to disseminate if what is presented is truthful or dishonest.

If someone can figure this out, please let me know.
Recently, I saw on FB my gay sister-in-law "like" Mitt, and she hasn't worked in 10 years. Started off as disablity, not sure what it became. I was convinced it was a mistake, I called her. NOT a mistake, she doesn't see where the President has done anythingfor our economy. I started listing off items, I could tell she had closed me out & she mentioned his birth certificate!! I accused her of watching Fox, she denied it. I closed the conversation with "I hope you enjoy your recent marriage because Mitt will null & void it"
I went back to her fb page, she may not watch Fox, but she likes all the far right wing fb pages

    Call me speechless

Pretty much everyone agrees that our president had a less than stellar performance at the first debate. Key word: "performance". I listened to it on the radio and I heard him prevail - to a limited degree - on substance despite the sub-optimal delivery.

Simultaneously, Romney cynically vomited up whatever he had to say to appeal to weak-minded low-information voters despite much of it being 180 degrees opposite of what he was saying during his "severe conservative" primary campaign.

(It should not go unremarked upon that Mittens possesses the extremely impressive discipline to completely expunge from his smoove delivery that hideously annoying lip-smack and awkward chuckling. Good job, asshole!)

How any of this translates into a reversal of the president's likely election prospects according to polls the day before the debate can only be explained in one word: "Obama is the ni**er in the White House".

    Sorry. Eight words.

    1. Racists have never cared about the amount of color you have in your heritage. You're still black.

They even had cutesy names for it.

To them Obama is a Mulatto; half white and half black.

If you have one black grandparent, you are a Quadroon.

If you are 1/8th black, you're an octaroon.

But you're still Black. Even if you look white, you're black.

I think this was what the musical Showboat was all about.

So basically, for these folks it doesn't matter if Obama is half white. As long as he has a drop of African blood, he's black. And I'm sure those that feel this way also feel he is inferior to them and doesn't deserve to be in the White House. (As we saw on that t-shirt at the Rmoney rally.)

What truly scares me is Romney's endless drive to gain the title of President of the United States. He has more money than a few small countries. Why accept a paltry 450k? Why embrace the headaches, the accelerated aging, problems of running a nation. Why put up with the loss of money (he put up 35mil of his own money in his first attempt, 2008), being portrayed as a cold calculating liar, high ranking member of a cult religion and all the negative press. Is this worth it? Is it worth going through this twice?? He's obviously unqualified as he's changed his position and flip-flopped on a multitude of issues numerous times. This just shows he'll do and say anything to appease voters. It shows a compromise of integrity and ultimately shines a spotlight on his dishonesty. Is he just exhibiting the disease all men with wealth suffer -that the next goal is something money can't but he can try to buy --power?

      Great comment!

And why too would Ann Romney, suffering with MS, want to put herself through the stresses of First Lady, with the traveling, the expectations and tight scheduling, and her husband being away, and not being able to curl up with her in bed and tell her it's OK. I could never understand Elizabeth Edwards either, willing to undergo all that while she was diagnosed with bone cancer.

Is achieving power so important to these men that they sacrifice their sick spouses to the endless stress? That's not honorable for the 'priest of the home' and Mitt Romney doesn't set a good example of a Mormon Bishop.

First, I don't think the election is as close as the MSM makes it out to be. I call it the "world series syndrome." How many times has the world series finished in 4 or 5 games? The MSM likes a close race for the ad revenue, ratings and clicks. That said, my second suspicion is racism. There are so very many people who just cannot get past the fact that President Obama has darker skin than they do. Of course, ignorance and underinformed people are to blame as well. How many times have we all tried to engage people who don't even have a rudimentary grasp on the issues? If one does not know who their representative is, who their senators are, who their vice president is and who their secretary of state is they should not be able to vote. An ignorant vote is worse than no vote at all. It's our RESPONSIBILITY AND DUTY as citizens to keep abreast of our local, state and national politics. No excuses. Yeah, Gryph, I share your frustration on these issues. Mitt the twit should be a completely unviable joke of a candidate at this point.

Not only Americans, but the world is depending on informed Americans to keep a President Obama in a second term. You guys are like the O-be-wan-Kenobe's (you are our only hope). It's scary to hear so many news stories about possible voting fraud. If this proved true and if Mitt Romney was that desperate to win a presidency, what would a cheating man do after he stole the White House? It is a scary proposition.

We see a President Obama who acts soundly, rationally, sane, and who addresses things accurately, and anything he says can be verified always. He doesn't lie. He's proven to be trustworthy. Not everything has been accomplished, but rational people know what he's been up against these past 4 years.

Ann and Mitt Romney believe people should just trust them because. They must be so delusional that they think they have a shot at the Presidency without proving their worth. Speaking falsehoods doesn't prove their worth.

Any man who lies, and contradicts himself so much like Romney does, on a daily basis, is not a man that should be the leader of one of the most powerful nations on earth.

People have become complacent and could never believe that their conservative leaders would ever have ulterior motives or not have their best interests at heart. But, it's that complacency that a dangerous man or woman could take advantage of, pulling the rug right out from people after he was voted in. If a man can comfortably lie before an election, imagine what he would be capable of once in power.

Cannot say how relieved we will all be when this election is over and the rational truthful man is still in.
