Breaking News: General Petraeus resigns as CIA Director, after admitting to extramarital affair. Update!

Courtesy of Politico:

David Petraeus resigned his post as director of the Central Intelligence Agency on Friday, citing an extramarital affair.

Petraeus visited the White House on Thursday to ask President Barack Obama to accept his resignation “for personal reasons,” he said in a statement to CIA staff. “After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours.”

This is a real shame.

In my opinion General Petraeus was a very professional man who did his job to the best of his ability. However like all of us he is only human, and subject to lapses in judgment.

I feel no need to pile on as the General was never one of those who stood in judgement over others, he was not a hypocrite, and in fact was one of the FIRST highly placed military leaders to call for an end to "Don't Ask Don't Tell,"

He was one of the good ones and I feel quite badly for he and his family.

Update: Apparently the woman that the FBI is investigating is Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell. There are many conflicting reports, ranging from her attempting to access classified e-mails, to the discovery of e-mails between the two of them that talked openly of their affair. Hard to tell where the truth lies right now.

There is a lot of Right Wing misinformation going around, some of it accusing the Obama administration of orchestrating this in order to keep Petraeus from having to testify about Benghazi before Congress.  so let's try to be careful about what we accept at face value until the REAL reporters have a chance to examine the evidence.

Update 2: More information coming out from credible sources. This from the Wall Street Journal:

Multiple officials familiar with the investigation identified the woman with whom Mr. Petraeus had the affair as Paula Broadwell, who wrote a biography of him called "All In: The Education of Gen. David Petraeus.'' Efforts to reach Ms. Broadwell on Friday weren't successful. A spokeswoman for her publisher didn't immediately comment.

The computer probe began this spring, according to a person familiar with the investigation. Mr. Petraeus, however, was not interviewed by the FBI until recently.

While Mr. Petraeus was still a general, he had email exchanges with the woman, but there were no physical transgressions, the person said. The affair began only after Mr. Petraeus retired from the military in August 2011, and ended months ago, the person said.

An extramarital affair has significant implications for an official in a highly sensitive post, because it can open the official to blackmail and compromise of his security clearance.

So there is still some question as to whether there is really ANY evidence that  Ms. Broadwell actually saw any classified e-mails, or whether there is only a suspicion she MIGHT have had access to confidential e-mails.

Good riddance. I believe a civilian, not a military officer, should lead a civilian agency like the CIA. There is too goddamn much military worship and too much deferment to the fucking military in this country as it is.

If Petraeus actually ADMITS to an affair and goes so far as to resign because of it, it makes me wonder what he's NOT telling us yet. I somehow doubt that an extramarital affair is the sole reason for his resignation. Who he bangs on his own time is nobody's business. UNLESS the person he is banging is a security risk.

I'm just damn glad this announcement waited until AFTER the election.

    1. Admitting and resigning makes me think he is a lot more honorable of a man than most of those around him in the D.C. and surrounding areas.

I doubt the mistress is a security risk either.

I think he's doing this just to save his family additional pain. If he resigns it's over and done with a lot quicker.

So the guy who made the trailer "innocence of Muslims" quietly sentenced the other day to what 4 yrs, and now Petratas steps down in the middle of Benghazi questioning.
      B/c of a girlfriend?
Who was behind that movie? Romney and Co? Koch?
Who paid for that shit? Fox news?
Find out who and we will know why Petraras stepped down. I am waiting for this to land on RMoney! It would be murder!

As for how the affair came to light, the Congressional official said that “it was portrayed to us that the F.B.I. was investigating something else and came upon him. My impression is that the F.B.I. stumbled across this.”

There has to be more to this story. Petraeus was rumored to be a bit of a "lad," but I'm guessing an affair would have be pretty serious to merit his resignation. Either he was doing the nasty with a foreign national or someone who was a severe security risk, or this is just a cover for some other mistake he's made that's too sensitive to disclose to the public.

I really don't understand this. Doesn't he just have to do a mea culpa - I have sinned before God yadda yadda and then be absolved just like all the Repubs who've been caught w/ their pants down? Or does serving under a Democratic Pres make that an impossibility? I'm a evangelical Christian and I have no desire to know what goes on in people's bedrooms. Everyone makes mistakes, the person he wronged is his wife, not the public. Once it becomes a pattern of behavior (Newt Gingrich) or the mistake is compounded by lies (Edwards, and not the sparkly bloodsucking one) then it shows a profound defect in their character, which can cause we the public to lose confidence in their judgement. But a single affair that he fessed up to? As much as I dislike the CIA as a whole he has not been the disaster others have been( Bush.)

Am I naive or alone on feeling this way?

Anyone in high office or a sensitive position has to avoid putting themselves into compromising positions.

The woman could have beeen ready to cause a scandal, blackmailed him, or even worse been a threat to national security.

I hate to see Petraus go, as he was a reasonable human being, and not a fanatic idealogue.

just consider the implications for someone as important as CIA director.

I just heard his lover may have had access to his emails. This is a breach or security issue that disqualifies him. He has to suck up his resignation (pun intended).

To Elliegirl/mykid's mom at 12:48 pm. Gen. Petraeus is not a GOP member of Congress. He will be defended by the GOP even though he calls himself a moderate Republican because the GOP want to attack President Obama by way of the general's resignation.

Being head of the CIA is an extremely sensitive position. General Petraeus knew that he had put himself in a very compromising (from a security point of view) position and then there is the question of giving someone access to emails (what the FBI discovered). He should have known better. His resignation is appropriate.

Why couldn't he have just apologized and stayed on? Was he maybe being blackmailed and decided to jump ahead of it? Was his wife about to go public with major details? Too bad a fine public servant has to be lost to a simple affair, if that's what it was.

Yes, I think your suspicions are right here. He must have had an affair that was controversial, or slept with someone who was a national security threat. And he's clearly trying to "get out in front of the story," as they say. I doubt he's being blackmailed, but I bet someone's got dirt on him that he doesn't want out in the public eye, so he's preemptively stepping down to avoid embarrassing himself and the administration.

The CIA takes affairs very seriously as they can make an operative vulnerable to blackmail. If a lower level operative can be sacked due to an affair (and they can be), certainly the same standard should hold for they guy at the top.

The only way the he will get subpoenaed to testify on what happened and what he knew is to send your Congressman an offical request. Go to their website and send a request now.

Americans lost their lives and we must have answers on who ordered the withdraw of security forces and who ordered the stand down on the request for support during the battle.

Americans are owed an explanation and officials can't just walk out the door and not be held accountable.

New Detailed Account of Benghazi Attack Notes CIA’s Quick Response
      Email341Smaller FontTextLarger Text|Print
Intelligence officials have disclosed a new detailed timeline of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, acknowledging the CIA played a greater role in responding to the attack than has previously been disclosed. A senior U.S. intelligence official also insisted that the CIA security team that initially responded to the attack was not given orders “to stand down in providing support,” as had been suggested in media reports.
The timeline provided by a senior U.S. intelligence official gives the first precise account of how CIA security teams provided the first response to the Sept. 11 attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, which killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The attack has become a political hot potato in the presidential campaign, with conservatives accusing the administration of not being transparent. The State Department has previously released a detailed account of the night’s events, but did not acknowledge a CIA role in the response. The timeline given by a senior Intelligence official confirms that the facility previously described by the State Department as an annex, was in fact, a facility housing CIA security officers. It does not provide any additional details on the current intelligence assessment that the attack was an opportunistic result of earlier protests that day outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo over an anti-Muslim movie.
The official says there was “no second guessing” of those on the ground in Libya by senior officials either in Libya or Washington.
“There were no orders to anybody to stand down in providing support,” said the official. The official’s comments appeared to be a direct rebuttal of a Fox News report that CIA teams on the ground had been told by superior officers to “stand down” from providing security support to the consulate.
According to the official, upon learning of the attack at the consulate, the security team at the annex responded “as quickly and effectively as possible.” The official described how the security team tried to rally additional support from local Libyan forces and heavier weapons, but that when that could not be accomplished “within minutes” they moved out to the compound. The official called the security team “genuine heroes” who risked their lives to save those at the compound.

    Same thing happened with Clinton.

If you're doing your job and your private life is not interfering with you doing your job, your sex life is no one's business. No matter who you are or what you do or who you do it with.

So he committed adultery. So what? That's between him and his wife.

I really don't give a rat's ass who he slept with.

I didn't care who John Edwards slept with either. There I simply thought it showed a tremendous weakness of character to commit adultery when your wife is dying of cancer.

This is why I don't care if LGBTs run for political office. Not my business. How well they do their job. That's my concern.

Exceptions would be criminal acts, sexual, fiscal, whatever. If it's illegal, then you should be OUT. And it should not be the decision of the politician whether they resign or not. You break the law, you have no business making laws.

The problem is not the "morals" involved. It is that Gen. Petraeus is the head of the CIA and scandal like this could be very compromising from a security point of view. If he had affairs while in the military, who cares. Eisenhower had a lady friend during WWII. It would not matter much. Republicans certainly don't mind dalliances by their members of Congress although they tend to freak out if those across the aisle have affairs.

But in this situation there is now an entire emerging issue: the potential level of access to sensitive emails given to the woman involved. It will all blow over now that he has resigned because, with his resignation, it is a fait accompli. Had he not resigned the media and the GOP (remember he's not their kind of Republican) would have dragged it out for years.

Paula Broadwell, David Petraeus Biographer, Reportedly Woman Involved In CIA Director's Affair: Slate

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/09/paula-broadwell-david-petraeus-affair_n_2104427.html

Paula Broadwell, a Harvard researcher who co-wrote a biography of David Petraeus, is the woman with whom the retired four-star general had an affair, prompting his abrupt resignation on Friday as director of the CIA, according to Slate's Fred Kaplan.

Broadwell co-authored "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," which was released in earlier this year. According to her website, she was embedded with the general in Afghanistan from July 2010 to July 2011 and was "afforded extensive access by General Petraeus, his mentors, his subordinates, and his longtime friends."

The New York Times reported that Congressional and White House officials also believed that Broadwell had an affair with Pertraeus. The AP also confirmed this report.

MSNBC's Richard Engel reported on Friday evening that the FBI is conducting an ongoing investigation into Broadwell to see whether she had improper access to Petraeus' emails and may have seen classified information. Engel added that it doesn't appear that any charges are going to be filed, and that Petraeus himself is not being investigated.

    From the Associated Press:

Officials say revelations about the affair that led to Friday's resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus were discovered in the course of an FBI investigation.
The officials, briefed on what led to the CIA director's sudden resignation, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

It was unclear what the FBI was investigating or when it discovered the Petraeus affair.

Broadwell, like Petraeus, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, according to a biography on her website.

Just last month, Broadwell wrote "General David Petraeus’s Rules for Living" for Newsweek/The Daily Beast.

The fifth of the 12 "Lessons on leadership" from the general is "We all will make mistakes." She wrote, "The key is to recognize them and admit them, to learn from them, and to take off the rear view mirrors -- drive on and avoid making them again."

Petraeus has been married to Holly Petraeus for 37 years. The couple became engaged while they were in college and have two children.

Just thinking that - once again - important people, who should know better, not making good decisions b/c of nether regions! Seriously!! The problem with this is NOT that he was bonking whomever, but that he was the director of the freaking CIA!!!! The affair does not make him an issue, but the fact that he is willing to give a person access to his email accounts b/c he is bonking.......sorry to say this, but it appears that these guys are thinking with wrong part of anatomy.

And, yes, it has less to do with the fact that he HAD AN AFFAIR and more to do with WHO and her agenda.

Another man who's thinking with the wrong head, what a shame! But he did the right thing, he's lost all credibility with those in his command and his peers. He put our security at risk and harmed his marriage, his life, and his legacy.

Ms Broadwell's book was called "All In...The Education of General Petrayus". She was "embedded" with him in Afghanistan!?!?!

You can't make this stuff up.

    Oh, the irony!

Reminds me of "the graduate" - "Mrs Robinson, I think you're trying to seduce me"

Fox has a new shiny object to focus on. What did Obama know, When did he know it, and what's Mrs Broadwell's phone number.... the poutrage begins...
