How doomed are the conservatives? Pretty doomed.

Courtesy of New York Magazine:

How doomed are conservatives? Pretty doomed, if you look carefully at the Pew Research Survey’s close analysis of the youth vote in the 2012 elections. The Republicans’ long-term dilemma has generally been framed in racial terms, but it’s mainly a generational one. The youngest generation of voters contains a much smaller proportion of white voters than previous generations, and those whites in that generation vote Republican by a much smaller margin than their elders. What’s more, younger voters supported President Obama during the last two election cycles for reasons that seem to go beyond the usual reasons — social issues like gay marriage and feminism, immigration policy, or Obama’s personal appeal — and suggest a deeper attachment to liberalism. The proclivities of younger voters may actually portend a full-scale sea change in American politics.

Ahh! This is the kind of early morning post that puts a smile on your face for the entire day.

The idea that perhaps someday soon the racism, class warfare, and hypocritical moralizing that seems to  define today's Republican party might come to an abrupt end is perhaps the most uplifting news possible.

However, though I don't want to rain on any parades, I do feel obligated to point out that we have seen a generation like this before. They were the Baby Boomers, and they were FAR more liberal, less warlike, and better educated than their parents and their parent's parents, and yet something happened to them.

They (we) ended up helping to elect Ronald Reagan, free love hippies evolved into money focused yuppies, and somehow we seemed to lose direction, until ultimately we became the very establishment that we had railed against only a handful of years before.

I hope against hope that we do not witness this same scenario play out once again.

I, like many intelligent Americans, am lying awake right now fretting over Obama legislation that has potential to completely further fuck the country up. Business owners have warned. Doctors have warned. Selfish, ulterior motive democrats. Go to hell

Creepy Chuck, Jr, the sister-fucker has spoken! Chuck, your family is the biggest bunch of grifters. You should be ashamed to be hanging on your sister's coattails, but you're not. You're a joke of a man. Ask around town what people REALLY think about you and your daddy. That's your reputation that you've EARNED. Just like Sarah, you all are the dumbest people I have ever encountered that CLAIM to be educated. Idiots. YOU go to hell.

There is hope for younger generations, but many of them, like my nephew, are influenced by their parents. My brother is a conservative Republican, and my nephew follows in his footsteps, even following lunatics like Allan West and Marco Rubio, and liking The Heritage Foundation, AEI, Mitt Romney, and Paul Ryan on Facebook. As you can guess, I don't discuss politics at family gatherings.

I've noticed this shift a while back through my kids (28&31), my nieces (31&23), and innumerable younger guys with whom I work. I've come to feel very hopeful given this fact. The Rethuglikans are Dodo birds, politically. Every time they open their collective maws they show their tin ears, and myopic vision. Their ham handedness in their approach to political talking points, I believe, will relegate them to the trash bin of History sooner, rather than later. Good riddance.

Which is sad because democrats are stupid. Or maniacal, selfish assholes.

    1. You paint with a pretty broad brush, regardless of your personal politics. FYI, that's not an effective way to engage others in a discussion. But if you just need to rant and insult others to bring attention to yourself since you're not getting your way within the democratic process, feel free to continue. There's no better tension-reliever than a good laugh at a wigged-out wingnut stamping their feet while screaming at their teevee because things are not exactly as you'd choose at the moment.

Look on the bright side, Romney WILL be in the White House tomorrow! You know "those people", unable to take responsibility for their lives and looking to the Government for free lunch.

I'm sure they'll have Welch Cakes and cheesy grits on the menu, just for him.

It is about the right time women have reared their heads again...watch for us! We are the new head of households now!

    1. No, I didn't. That was the first time I was old enough to participate in an election, and I voted for Carter.

That began my long history of voting for the losing candidate, as I did again in 84, 88, 2000, and 2004.

However Reagan DID receive a lot of the youth vote, which has always bothered me.

  8. I hope you are right, but The average Republican is about 50 years old. The average age for democrats is 47.7 years old which leads me to believe that it might be the children of the boomers who nestled into the greedy waiting arms of the GOP. I'm not saying that a lot of my generation went RIGHT after the free love turned into children and the need to have a regular paycheck became a priority. My son otherwho is 44 yrs. old, until recently, leaned Libertarian (just an arm of the GOP). He has converted LEFT because he says the GOP has become the party of crazy greedy war mongers who want to bleed the 99 percent dry, he doesn't want his taxes raised to pay for the one percent to have another tax break and he doesn't want to see his son march off to another war. There is HOPE!!!

I don't know, Gryph. The older I get, (55 now), the more liberal I get. I didn't help to elect Ronnie, I voted for Anderson. (Does that mean I did help Ronnie? I hate to think so.) I love the way the youngsters are thinking! I mean, really using their brains and voices. My kids are listening to real news, and voting with their brains. Makes me want to live a long long time.

Here's an excerpt from my Facebook posttonight that I thought I'd share with youguys."I hope my kids have the same opportunities I had when they grow up. I woke up at 4:30am today and couldn't go back to sleep because I was having vivid images flash through my mind of our economy collapsing in 2014. Obamacare has me very worried, and I'm not talking about what I've been reading and seeing in the news... I'm talking about things that I've personally heard from friends of mine that are currently practicing medicine. They see this program as unsustainable. They have worked for many years to build up their practices and it's all falling to pieces in front of them. One of my doctor friends who I went to college with and now practices here, told me that he is leaving the profession next year because of what's being required of him. He told me that the new hoops he has to jump through have already cut his patient load in half. He spends twice as much time on paperwork and half the time with his patients. We all know what's going to happen to our insurance premiums, and we've all heard from businessmen and women who will either cut their labor force or shut down trying to implement the new government requirements.Everyone in this country wants every citizen to have adequate health care. We just want to go about in the correct manner. We want everyone to try and pull their own weight, and we want input from the very people that provide this care to us. I am definitely not an authority on this subject but I've seen, heard, and read enough about it for it to keep me up at night. I still can't believe that Pelosi said that we'd pass this gigantic bill and then figure out what was in it later."Thanks,Chuck"

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...I think CreepyJr is as deluded as his bald headed sister! Those grifters are so damn transparent! LOL!!!

I disagree about free love hippies turning into money focused yuppies. A lot of them realized they had to play the system, and used their intelligence to create non-profits that help people, environment, etc. or started private enterprise with awesome business ethics treating customers, employees, environment with respect. There are a few that became legislators, and we need more of them in Congress.

Ronald Reagan won in 1980, by treason. He used the hostages against then-President Carter to win that election. Remember "Arms for Hostages"? Carter was about to broker a deal with Iran to release the hostages, until Reagan offered them arms to keep the hostages until after the election. He knew that if the hostages were released the people would reelect Carter, but if the hostages were not released, people would blame Carter and not reelect him. It worked. That agreement between Reagan and Iran, got Reagan elected.
And people have honored that traitor Reagan all these years, naming a lot of things across the country after him.

I hate to say it, Gryphen, but the parties have flip flopped since we became a nation. Granted, there were parties which disappeared entirely, (The Whigs come to mind) but the Democrats and Republicans have switched sides a fair number of times. And there probably will always be the pendulum affect.

And it was usually due to the more outlandish groups taking control that we would have a party shift.

Perhaps if we can keep from swinging TOO far left we can maintain control. Or barring that, keep from getting too proud of ourselves.

Not that I like it any, just lettin' you know.

The conservatives maybe "doomed" or almost doomed which is a good thing. But my fear is that we will get complacent and let the conservatives regain their stranglehold on the country. If we get too full of ourselves the country will be lost.

When the Republicans try to change voter laws to their advantage the Democrats must shout out and let everyone know whats happening.

I rarely disagree, but on this I do.
I think these extremist conservatives are done, toast, kaput, drowning in their tea. But I think the old conservatives, the middle of the road conservatives will end up taking their party back. I know of at least 20 republicans that voted for President Obama in the last 2 elections because their candidates were horrible and those religious extremists have taken over their party, they are not democrats, but independents waiting to take over their party again.

I watched my 27yo son on election day. He left voting until late in the day. Then, they showed the long lines in Fl to suppress the vote. He jumped up, said "No. They (Repubs) can't do that. I will NEVER vote Republican in my life" and practically ran out the door to vote. I believe him--and believe Republicans have left an impression on many that will never change.

When you really think about the diff between Dems & Reps it is greed. Just like Gordon Gecko in Wall Street said....greed in all its forms is good. The sad part it is good, but the GOP have decided in money and power....nothing else. Regan started the downfall and once Wall St got the taste of easy money it was all over, no consequences for literally stealing from the rest of us. Faux thrives on the religious uneducated and the GOP found its base, the true haters. I still have faith that the human spirit will eventually prevail, we are our brothers keeper and we are all equal in that we are born, live and then die. What happens in between defines us, how lucky to be born in America.
