Ten year old girl writes to President about being bullied for having two dads, Obama writes back.

Courtesy of the Huffington Post:

I've refrained from all the political posts, but this is just too close to home to ignore. This is not about President Obama -- it's about what's right. So frankly, if you don't agree with the innocent, heartfelt and surprisingly straightforward position of my 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, then please unfriend me because we don't actually belong connected here in the first place. Posted on Facebook by Sophia Bailey Klugh's dads Jonathan Bailey and Triton Klugh.

This made the rounds on Facebook, numerous other social media sites, as well as quite a few blogs, and many wondered if the very busy Commander-in-Chief would have the time or even inclination to respond.

Now we have learned the answer to that question.

Again courtesy of the Huffington Post:

Here is the text of the letter for those having trouble reading this:

Dear Sophia,

Thank you for writing me such a thoughtful letter about your family. Reading it made me proud to be your president and even more hopeful about the future of our nation.

In America, no two families look the same. We celebrate this diversity. And we recognize that whether you have two dads or one mom what matters above all is the love we show one another. You are very fortunate to have two parents who care deeply for you. They are lucky to have such an exceptional daughter in you.

Our differences unite us. You and I are blessed to live in a country where we are born equal no matter what we look like on the outside, where we grow up, or who our parents are. A good rule is to treat others the way you hope they will treat you. Remind your friends at school about this rule if they say something that hurts your feelings.

Thanks again for taking the time to write me. I'm honored to have your support and inspired by your compassion. I'm sorry I couldn't make it to dinner, but I'll be sure to tell Sasha and Malia you say hello.

Sincerely, Barack Obama

THAT is the progressive President that this country deserves. THAT is the respectful President that the LGBT community deserves. And THAT is the compassionate President that little Sophia Bailey Klugh deserves.

Don't you think?

  4. I have to say, I'm impressed both with this articulate and intelligent little girl, and with our President. He's got a big heart.

  5. Brought tears to my eyes.Beautiful, just beautiful.I am so damn proud Barack Obama is our President, and I hope he will be for another four years after tomorrow. When he won the nomination four years ago,I was irked it wasn't Hillary. And then,I saw and heard the love, pride and respect he has for his wife and daughters, and for his late mother and grandparents. The light bulb went off over my head, and I realized-THIS man gets "it".He knows how hard we single mothers work,he knows what it is to have to work harder then some random white guy to get respect and accolades. He knows what "we" (women and people of color)face every day trying to make it.Add to that his intelligence, his grace and his thought before action made me a believer and a backer. After that,I could not wait to cast my vote for him-same as I did two weeks ago.

Wow, what a bright kid! This is the kind of thing that gives me hope for a better world.

If this correspondence doesn't touch someone's heart, they need to slow down just a bit and read both letters again until they get it. It's so simple and so basic, that it's something kids will remember forever if you take time to teach them and reinforce it with the way you live every day.

I'd heard about this letter, but have been too busy to check it out. Or I thought I was too busy. Thanks for putting it right under my nose. Highlight of my day. Thanks, G.

It's not only that President Obama wrote such a sensitive, caring response, but that he wrote a response at all. Good for your president: I hope you have him for four more years, and another like him to follow.

Update on FiveThirtyEight. Obama 91.4%, Romney 8.6%.
I just hope the bastards don't steal it somehow.

    1. Holy crap!

Colorado (my state) has an 80% chance of backing Obama (highest yet, I think) and Nate's calculations has Florida light blue!

  9. OT, but FiveThirtyEight now shows a 91.4% chance of an Obama win tomorrow (314.4 electoral votes). And Florida's blue! Take that, mein Führer Rick Scott. Do not try to suppress the voting rights of South Floridians!

Let me see, Ryan said in a phone call to a conservative Christian group and Romney said in a robo-call that President Obama does not support or reflect basic Judeo-Christian ethics. What BS!

He lives those values. This is yet another proof of it.

Someone needs to tell Romney and Ryan that lying is not a Christian value.

I dont' think that Ryan (or Romney) would know a Judeo-Christian value if it bit them on the hand. President Obama has shown how much he embraces the best of these values in every one of his actions as president.

Wow - we are so lucky to have Obama as our President. Surely we will not be so stupid as to lose him tomorrow. We need him now more than ever! That a great President and a great man.

Oh, honey. The republicans don't hate your dads. The Republicans just hate who they are and everything they stand for and think you would be better off with no parents.

I can't imagine a President Romney ever showing that type of compassion, even to a child.

  20. I think not only did the President read Sophia's letter, but he, personally, wrote this response. It was not farmed out to some staffer.

If Romney had been President, likely there wouldn't be a response, if there was it certainly wouldn't have been as compassionate or personal and third, it would most certainly have been farmed out to a staffer.

It probably would have included a card about contributing to the re-elect Rmoney committee too.

World of difference between these too men.

You made me laugh with the donation line. He probably would add that if she didn't have the money to contribute, she should ask her parents for a loan.

Romney has made it clear he doesn't think same-sex couples should have children.

Out of the mouths of babes...

The content of this man's character is one of the most precious gifts this great man shares.

This man never ceases to amaze me. He's the President of the United States, and takes the time every night to read and answer letters, especially letters from a child who's dealing with other people's ignorance, bigotry, and hate.

Had Romney responded he would have included some Mormon pseudo-religious tracts for Sophia to give to her dads. Remember that Mitt Romney does not think that children should be raised in same-sex family situations.

Sending Gryphen a donation - this blog is the absolute best in my opinion and he earns it every single day, every post, every funny, sad or outrageous bit of news he brings us!
