MAD magazine reveals the unabridged NRA statement from last Tuesday. Update: NRA President's speech today!

If image does not enlarge click here
You know the sad part is that this, though written by a humor magazine, is probably not at all far from the truth. In fact I would say that it is most likely spot on.

Later today, in just a half an hour or so in fact, the NRA is going to release a NEW statement. Get ready for the obfuscation and redirection, because you KNOW it's coming.

By the way you may be interested to learn that gun deaths are just about to surpass traffic deaths by the year 2015:

A disturbing new study by Bloomberg finds that by 2015, the number of people killed by guns in the US will likely surpass the number of people killed in traffic accidents. It would be a first. Vehicle deaths are on the decline (down 22% between 2005 and 2010), but gun deaths have been increasing since hitting a low in 2000. By 2015, shooting fatalities are expected to be at nearly 33,000, while traffic fatalities will be around 32,000.

In 10 states, gun deaths were already outpacing traffic deaths in 2009, Slate reports. Those states range from Michigan, which had a high of 1,095 gun deaths compared to 977 motor vehicle deaths, to Alaska, which had a low of 104 gun deaths compared to 84 motor vehicle deaths.

Do you want to guess at how many of those deaths by way of a bullet were considered a legitimate use of force to protect property or life? I think we all know the answer to that.

Update:  Wayne LaPierre just said that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun.  He just literally demanded that the President allow his organization to put trained gunmen into our public schools to protect our children, this is beyond insane!

Update 2: Here is the transcript from Wayne LaPierre's speech, he is the President of the NRA. You are going to have to read it to believe it.

Here is one disgusting portion:

We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American family, our children, we as a society leave them every day utterly defenseless, and the monsters and the predators of the world know it, and exploit it.

By the way if you want to see one of those monsters that LaPierre is talking about here is a picture of one. ANYBODY who uses a tragedy like this to insist on more lax gun laws around our public schools and demands that gunmen be allowed to walk around among our children as a deterrent to the crimes made possible by HIS lobbyists constant watering down of our gun laws, is the very definition of a monster.

Update 3: Do you remember that post I wrote on December 8th, about the fact that the NRA loves mass shootings because they frighten people into buying more guns?

Remember how some people thought that was an exaggeration?

Check out this portion of La Pierre's unbelievable speech this morning:

Right now today every school in the United States should plan meetings with parents, school administrators, teachers, local authorities and draw upon every resource that’s out there and available to erect a cordon of protection around our kids right now.

Every school is gonna have a different solution based on its own unique situation. Every school in America needs to immediately identify, dedicate and deploy the resources necessary to put these security forces in place, though, right now.

And the National Rifle Association, as America’s preeminent trainer of law enforcement and security personnel for the past 50 years -- we have 11,000 police training instructors in the NRA -- is ready, willing and uniquely qualified to help.

Still think it was an exaggeration?

From The Washington Post: "Former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford is reportedly planning to run in the special election for senator-designate Tim Scott’s vacated House seat, sources said Friday."

It's about time! In a country plagued by political leaders painfully lacking in the simple American virtues of Hard Work, Honesty, Integrity and Unshakable Family Values it's time for new leadership.

It's time for Mark Sanford. He doesn't just talk the talk; he walks the walk.

I trained long and hard to be a teacher, not a member of a SWAT team!!! I will never believe that my fellow teachers, staff members, or students are safer because there's an armed guard at the front door of our school or my principal has a gun in a locked safe. I do believe we will be safer if there is a ban on assault weapons!

The NRA wants to have a bloody civil war. Remember many of these people are Preppers, like whoever fed and sold Adam Lanza's mother on her lifestyle. If more people aren't sold on the end of the world as we know it, and they can only excessively stockpile and prepare to shoot up any intruders to their stash... they will loose their jobs, their income. Suckers won't be buying bomb shelters, assault weapons, ammo or what the hell else.

I for one do not understand gun culture. I've never owned a weapon and never had a reason to. I also know teachers who live just like me, unarmed and unwilling to be armed, there just is no reason to be armed, zero. I don't think that these teachers will agree to be armed in a classroom or work in an environment surrounded by armed guards. There is absolutely no way to mandate arms in schools. I would bet that 30% or more of teachers would walk off the job if forced to teach in an armed workplace.

I came from a home that was practically an arsenal, as my father had a gun collection for hunting and numerous handguns. He apparently needed a different gun for every type of hunting he did. My family was of modest means so us kids got 3 pairs of shoes a year and school shopping consisted of 3 outfits, thank goodness my grandmother sewed. My father, of course, spent every spare dime on his guns. Things were fine until he realized my brother was somewhat mentally unstable and all guns and ammo had to be kept under strict lock and key. I couldn't wait to move out of that house. Once my father passed my brother left his wife high and dry to move back in with my mother. He stole the guns from her and pawned them, at least he didn't turn them on her. Needless to say I have not heard from my brother in over 17 years, I cut off all communication when he thought it appropriate to be be waving a gun around in my dining room over thanksgiving dinner in front of my 3 year old. I hate guns...

    2. Anonymous3:10 PM

I grew up without any macho gun owners or any of that drama. I learned to target practice (tin cans, bottles) on a friends farm. I was 10-12 and liked it. I hated that the boys wanted to kill rabbits and birds. For some reason I grew up hating guns later on. When I moved to California anyone I saw with a gun was an idiot and I decided 98% of the people should not be allowed to keep guns in their house.

NRA Marks One Week Since Sandy Hook With Crocodile Tears, Blame For Videogames And Movies

...There will be time, later, to tick off the litany of factual errors and logical missteps in LaPierre’s speech, such as the notion that a single armed security officer would have stood much of a chance against an assailant with a high-powered assault rifle and two semiautomatic pistols, but for now, it is worth noting that while LaPierre’s reaction was completely predictable, he didn’t have to do it now. He didn’t have to do it today, exactly one week after the nation first began to learn of the tragedy, at this time, when the echoes of a moment of silence in Newtown still hung in the spiritual air. This was an act of defiance, and it will result in punishment for anyone who stands with LaPierre going forward.

Joe Scarborough Explodes At Rep. Huelskamp’s Assertion That Newtown Tragedy Is Being ‘Politicized’

...Stricter legislation about assault weapons won’t solve the problem, the congressman said. “It’s a people problem.”

“What has bothered me the most as a representative is how this has been politicized so quickly that somehow if we had changed one single law — which as I understand it, the state of Connecticut had laws against these kind of things — and somehow that would have changed things,” Huelskamp said.

Pointing to his own children, Huelskamp noted that video games are an issue, so parents need to be cognizant of what their children are up to. Mental health is also an issue, he said, but “it’s not a gun problem.”

“It’s not a gun problem?” Scarborough asked. “So tell me, why do Americans need assault weapons? Why do they need these high-capacity clips? Why do they need a bushmaster? Can you tell me why?”

Huelskamp countered that there’ve been many “misleading” statements, including on that show. Scarborough took on his assertion by citing gun laws and gun violence in other countries and states. Asked whether it’s a constitutional issue, Huelskamp replied that it’s a Second Amendment issue.

He added, “But gosh, let’s step back. Let’s not build on the tragedy in Connecticut and use that to actually push a political agenda.” Which is what President Obama is doing, he said.

And with that, they were off.

“Do you dare come on my show and say I am using the slaughter of 20 little six- and seven-year-old children, I’m using that for political purposes, Tim?”

“Joe, how many children do you have?” Huelskamp asked.

“I’ve got four children, Tim,” Scarborough replied. “Answer my question.

“So do I,” Huelskamp said. “And I refuse to let you say that because you have children, or anybody else, that we need to actually politicize this.”

Or that the world will end and people will come after their food? Or more likely, they are defending themselves against their very own government. How very patriotic of them. They are so patriotic they need lots of guns to protect themselves from their fellow patriotic Americans. Or something.

No, I am not proposing a cordon. I was pointing out that LaPierre is attempting to frame the debate in terms of only protecting schools. It's a stupid debater trick. Of course, LaPierre knows that children congregate in many places, that it is impossible to provide armed guards for all those places. What LaPierre is saying with his plan for schools is that he thinks the general public is stupid enough to be side-tracked into a smaller issue.

LaPierre structured his "press conference" so that no one challenges his moronic plan. His strategy is to pretend concern and wait for the press to shift to the next big story, so LaPierre can continue his cushy life wining and dining legislators.

I actually like the NRA's bold proposal that all schoolchildren be armed in order to protect their classmates and school employees from mentally-ill, pedophile Democrats bent on violent random attacks. In addition to the obvious safety benefits, think of the welcome economic effects of a gun sales explosion when lightweight, fun-to-shoot, multi-colored, kid-friendly semi-automatic pistols (Disney movie merchandising opportunities, anyone???) are mandated school supplies!

Research by the respected Nugent Institute for Gunpowder Research has proven that with proper training even a 4 year old can responsibly handle a high-powered firearm equipped with as many as 30 armor piercing rounds.

And to all the whiny pussies crying about the risk of accidental or conflict-based shootings in schools, I have a one word answer: bullet-proof school wear.

As pertains to school shootings only: When all the politics are said and done, the only important issue to come out of this is protecting the lives of the children in their schools. Surely most would agree that this is far more important than having a fight with the NRA and eventually accomplishing nothing.

And so, because of that fact we now need to come to the obvious conclusion. It has become necessary in America to protect the lives of the children in the only way possible in the short term. The only way to do that is to accept that LaPierre is right and that armed protectors are brought to the schools. Surely not NRA members but more appropriately armed police officers.

How sad the conclusion is that armed guards have become the only answer. And note that I say, in the short term, because surely the situation can not be allowed to continue to exist. It is finally the admission of a sick society that must change. But change will take time and the lives of innocent children cannot be sacrificed for the politics of the ugly situation in the meantime.

And finally, consider the reaction of the NRA when the next shooting in a school occurs. Consider too that the only solution for the short term is going to be accepted by so many parents because they will now come to the conclusion that they want their children's lives protected. Consider also that some schools will adopt the policy and then consider the consequences when a shooting occurs in a school that doesn't!

As a Canadian it is with some reluctance that I have to be honest and come to this conclusion. The reason for that is that the measure will become a disease that will infect other countries. And the short term remedy will become the long term remedy simply because the real remedy of changing the gungoon mindset is too difficult to even consider

The NRA Shoots Itself in the Foot

At their press conference today, they did those wanting new restrictions on guns a huge favor.

While the organization was once devoted to marksmanship and gun safety, in recent years it has increasingly become a shill for the gun manufacturers that fund it and the home of unhinged conspiracy theorists. As it showed today, the worst thing it can do for its cause is to step into the light.

With the passel of kids and grandkids that they have, one would think that they would have offered SOMETHING. Even a tweet, a facebook post...something. Did everyone from Alaska see that Wayne Anthony Ross is a Board Member of the NRA? He lives in Eagle River, AK (north of Anchorage) and was the guy then Gov Sarah Palin put up for Attorney General for the State of Alaska.

His appointment was turned down by the Alaska State Legislature after many questions and discussion. (The process was televised and I watched it.) Wayne Anthony Ross "WAR" is a piece of work there is no doubt! (He has WAR on his vehicle license plates.)

Are we surprised Sarah (and I'm assuming Todd - since it has been proven that he did a lot of the work for the quitter gov) - as we know them today -tried to have WAR appointed to this position? Not at all!

    NRA WTF. F*ck the NRA.

Check this out from Daily Kos. Unconfirmed but read the whole thing at Daily Kos to get the NRA phone number to call for your own questions and answers.

    www.dailykos.com/story/2012/12/21/1172739/-I-Called-the-NRA-Today-Oh-Boy

"I have wondered recently whether the NRA has the courage of its convictions, and what their reaction might be if its headquarters were to be targeted by misguided gun enthusiasts. So I called the NRA HQ today to get answers"

    www.dailykos.com/story/2012/12/21/1172739/-I-Called-the-NRA-Today-Oh-Boy

"I finally got to an operator who connected me to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action. I asked the woman who picked up (after I outlined the situation) whether staff members were allowed to carry firearms in the HQ offices, or store them in their desks. She said, 'Of course. This is Virginia, and it is a concealed carry state, so, yes, staff can carry weapons at work. We follow the law.' But when I asked whether visitors could enter the building with weapons, she clammed up, saying that as an employee, she could not answer the question."

    www.dailykos.com/story/2012/12/21/1172739/-I-Called-the-NRA-Today-Oh-Boy

" I finally was connected to the public affairs department"

    www.dailykos.com/story/2012/12/21/1172739/-I-Called-the-NRA-Today-Oh-Boy

"She told me that the security guards at the front desk were unarmed, but that visitors were not allowed to bring weapons into the building (except to their posh firing range, which has a separate entrance). Doesn't that leave the visitors at a bit of an disadvantage, I asked, and we had a bit of a chuckle about that. I was too chicken to ask her whether that policy was inconsistent with the NRA's present philosophy that seems to encourage shoot-outs. "

    www.dailykos.com/story/2012/12/21/1172739/-I-Called-the-NRA-Today-Oh-Boy

I'll be giving them a call, the number has probably already been disconnected. I think everyone should be calling the NRA whenever they can, there are a lot of questions the NRA needs to answer.

Any organization that tells reporters to do what Dave Weigel tweeted yesterday "NRA asking reporters who want credentials to fax them proof "on company letterhead."" really needs their phones. The average member/donor can't find any new numbers, they aren't even online. So if the NRA phone number at Daily Kos doesn't work anymore, then find and post a new one.

    F*CK THE NRA.

"By the way you may be interested to learn that gun deaths are just about to surpass traffic deaths by the year 2015:"

And yet we hear no calls to ban auto's that go over 25 mph, or hear people calling Ford Mustangs "cop killers", or calling full sized pick ups "assault vehicles". There would be no uproar and call for "vehicle control" if some one killed his mother and took her keys and car and plowed into a crowd of school children, killing 20 of them. There would be no questions like, "how could she teach him to drive?"

What if news organization treated stories of auto deaths like they do gun deaths and sensationalized each one? "Lone driver kills three and injures 4 more!" "It's time for a National debate on "Auto Control". "National Auto Association shamelessly lobbies against new Auto Control regs". "The NAA prays for more mass pile-ups because people will buy more cars." "The NAA doesn't care if more kids die!"

No, people ignore driving related deaths and accidents, (not to mention all the animals killed and maimed by autos)unless it affects them or family or friends directly. Admit it, you glance right over stories of auto deaths. You don't think, we've got to ban car ownership.

And why is this? "Well guns belong to somebody else." "A car is a convenience for me." "I can tolerate people dying for my own convenience."

Well let me tell you, you and your loved ones are still more likely to die or be seriously injured from riding in a car than from being shot. What are you going to do about it? That's right, NOTHING. You don't want to be inconvenienced.

    1. Okay Rick you win "dumbest argument of the day." Congratulations!

Cars are primarily a mode of transportation that MIGHT cause the death of a passenger or pedestrian, guns are designed for the sole purpose of ending a life. Get the difference?

As for regulations, the auto industry is full of them. From seat belts, to rollover bars, to factory installed safety glass, cars have become safer and safer over time.

As for operating them, we have speed limits, child safety seats, and strict penalties for operating one while intoxicated, ALL designed to decrease the number of deaths or injuries.

Your first mistake was comparing apples and grenades and your second was being stupid enough to bring your idiocy over here.

Again I point out, you accept deaths that "aren't intended" for convenience. When you are dead, does it really matter if someone intended to kill you or it was an accident? Equally tragic to me.

The same arguments could be made for not owning or driving cars as for not owning and using guns.

"The government can provide protection, we don't need private gun ownership."

"The government can provide mass transportation, we don't need private car ownership."

The gun industry is also full of regulations that makes guns safer believe it or not.

But an interesting common thread with gun deaths and auto deaths...... drug and alcohol use. Mind altering substances cause users of both cars and guns to misuse them at a high rate. There are laws against using both cars and guns under the influence, but how do those laws work? Not too well. the only thing that really works is locking up people with the propensity to abuse and preventing them access to cars and guns.

There are many good people who own guns and who own cars, and some bad apples in both groups. You mistake is throwing a grenade at the bad apples and taking out the good guys too.

Target the bad guys and I have no problem with your thinking. But blaming all for the few bad ones and we're going to have serious differences.

And I guarantee you, a larger % of car owners misuse and break the law every day than do gun owners. I see it on the roads everyday. Speeders, red light runners, California stoppers, cell phone users and texters, etc etc etc.
