South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint pulls a "Palin" and leaves office halfway through second term. Well isn't THAT interesting?

So apparently Jim DeMint, conservative Senator and teabagger extraordinaire, has decided that he is done with actual policy making and instead wants to take a job with he Heritage Foundation, a conservative "think tank" that essentially bitches about policies that politicians SHOULD be making.

So this would mean that DeMint would go from actually having an impact on the direction the country is going to just complaining about the direction this country is going. Isn't that kind of a demotion?

This from the Wall Street Journal:

In an interview preceding the succession announcement, Sen. DeMint said he is taking the Heritage job because he sees it as a vehicle to popularize conservative ideas in a way that connects with a broader public. "This is an urgent time," the senator said, "because we saw in the last election we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections." Mr. DeMint, who was a market researcher before he entered politics, said he plans to take the Heritage Foundation's traditional research plus that of think tanks at the state level and "translate those policy papers into real-life demonstrations of things that work." He said, "We want to figure out what works at the local and state level" and give those models national attention.

Mr. DeMint, an active conservative partisan often at odds with his party's leadership, says he will "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component. Heritage is not just another grassroots political group."

Okay is anybody else picking up a strong scent of bullshit here?

WHY would somebody leave their job in the Senate to push and agenda that polls show the majority of Americans are no longer interested in anymore? That is kind of like quitting your job to head up advertising for New Coke after everybody started spitting it out and moving over to Pepsi.

So conspiracy theory time.

Is Jim Demint simply reading the writing on the walls and realizes that the Teabaggers are facing extinction, and that his influence in the Senate will be minimal at best?

Or, is he moving out of the way in a prearranged agreement to open the spot for South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley? (Though doing it now makes little sense.)

Or , and this is my favorite, is there a scandal brewing that DeMint is trying to avoid, and is therefore making himself a smaller target in the hopes that it will disappear?

Well right now I am not at all sure which one of these, if any, are the reason behind this surprising development. However I would be willing to bet that the reason provided is not even close to the actual reasons behind DeMint's decision.

No need for conspiracy theories. According to recent disclosure statements, DeMint is a long ways short of a millionaire. He's likely to make at least $1 million a year and is basically going to get the equivalent of tenure. So as long as he can keep the checks rolling in at Heritage, he'll make a ton of money. And he'll become just another conservative sucking on the teat of mega-donors without actually delivering any results. Nice to see them eating their seed corn.

Agreed, but that doesn't mean there isn't also a scandal. Oh, please let there be a scandal.

Rigging the election of his successor? That's what usually goes on when this early resignation happens.

He saw a quick way to get rich quick. He only has to stay one year at Heritage to significantly increase his net worth. He is following the Palin path to the money.

  8. Well the bald fella has Tweeted or Farted according to the Asylum...DeMint is recommending that Nikki "yes I cheated on my hubby but so what" Haley appoint a token...umm...Tim Scott.

Who is Tim Scott you say...he's an African American teabagger that Baldy endorsed...yes...Baldy endorsed him...so it means they should pick...SOMEONE ELSE!

Mr Scott has the Curse on him now and it doesn't come off! LOL!!!

Yeah well that's a typical bit of Palin "research" . People who actually know South Carolina say Scott wants to be governor, not senator. Governor, senator, all of 'em, any of 'em....

  9. How about it's a strong job offer with a raise and cushy benefits that's open now but may not be available after he loses his re-election bid in two years?

The writing on the wall is, take it now as it may not be there later when you're unemployed.

Good bye and good riddance. Here's hoping his replacement isn't such an obstructionist douche.

There were rumblings he was going to run for Prez in 2012. He may be avoiding fiscal cliff and other embarrassing votes in the Senate and use this new position to prep for a run in 2016. But I also hope there is a scandal. He's such a GOP jerk.

Au contraire, mon ami. The Heritage Foundation gives the Senators their marching orders and makes up stuff for them. It's their own special Big Lie technique -- the one that Joe Nocera wrote about -- where they get an "expert" from the Heritage Foundation (or the Cato Institute or maybe Alaska) to testify and give an opinion which need not be factual. Then the congressvarmints quote the testimony as if it were true and they repeat it over and over and over and the Fox echo chamber chimes in along with some bloggers and Voila a new conservative counterfactual fact hits the streets.

I consider being an elected official of the Republican persuasion, nothing better than being a puppet: they can never vote their own conscience, only the party line.

It is truly disheartening to see completely unanimous votes, on each and every bill. Why have more than ONE jerk sucking money out of the tax roles, if we know ahead of time how each will vote.

My God Gryphen do you know what the lunatics over in the asylum are saying??? They want Haley to appoint Palin!

    Here's a 'sampling'

"I know it's a stretch but she (Palin) supported Newt in SC and he won there. Im sure she could establish residency there in short order. It's a perfect fit and launching pad for her. If she runs for dog catcher, the left would explode and attack her family mercilessly. If appointed as Senator, she gets more protections and doesn't have to put her family through a primary process. If she was appointed now with Demint stepping down in Jan, the left would be caught flat footed. She got Haley elected there when nobody gave Haley a chance. Thirty plus days from now, nobody would be listening to Boehner, the total Media focus would be on Sarah. Don't know all the ins and out's but I think this one could be a gift horse. Take it if it's there. IMHO"

Sweet Jesus...Can you believe this shit?

Mr Demint is a radical, uncompromising Christian supremacist. He is for banning public school teachers who happen to be gay or pregnant single women.

That statement alone should inform the entire planet of his savage intolerance, ignorance, and prejudice against anyone not in the ultra right evangelical camp

Of course he later tried to walk it back a bit, but
just like the Rape Brothers (Akin and Mourdock) he was saying EXACTLY what he really feels.

I wonder how many gays and pregnant single women Jesus hates?

Even a wide stance won't oust a Senator any more. I'm thinking criminal with the threat of a long stretch in general population. The question is who has the dirt on him and why he is more valuable out of the senate than doing someone's bidding as a puppet with a compelling reason to obey.

Demint will enjoy a wealthy "retirement" on the pundit circuit. He's probably got dirt on some bigger fish which is why he's being given the gift of non-exposure.

BUT, a rent boy some where in the mix, undoubtedly.

  33. Sharon5:25 PM

This is really getting good...can't wait to see the news everyday to see another one explode!! I agree with all the posts, but I think the major reason is money, DeMint is the poorest in the Senate. He is doing a "Palin" and sees the writing on the wall. He is tired of going thru elections and actually working as a senator, now he can be the total blow hole he is and have a welcome seat at Faux. It will be interesting to see Rove VS DeMint for 2014, let us all pray there are enough decent Dems to win any new seats as these 2 will cancel each other out. Gov Haley is a disgrace to womanhood..I hope she loses too.

  34. More Palinesque than I first thought.

I heard on NPR today that his yearly salary will be over a million, whatever it is being six times more than his senate salary.

They also mentioned he's considering a run for president in 2016.

    How Palin is that?

Yes Gryphen, no doubt the real reason for this move is not the stated one. Scandal seems most plausible. Or blackmail of some sort to give the seat to someone else.

But this quote,'says he will "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component.', gave me the best laugh I've had all day. Even w/a severe backache I can't get the smile off my face every time I read it.
