So apparently Jim DeMint, conservative Senator and teabagger extraordinaire, has decided that he is done with actual policy making and instead wants to take a job with he Heritage Foundation, a conservative "think tank" that essentially bitches about policies that politicians SHOULD be making.
So this would mean that DeMint would go from actually having an impact on the direction the country is going to just complaining about the direction this country is going. Isn't that kind of a demotion?
This from the Wall Street Journal:
In an interview preceding the succession announcement, Sen. DeMint said he is taking the Heritage job because he sees it as a vehicle to popularize conservative ideas in a way that connects with a broader public. "This is an urgent time," the senator said, "because we saw in the last election we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections." Mr. DeMint, who was a market researcher before he entered politics, said he plans to take the Heritage Foundation's traditional research plus that of think tanks at the state level and "translate those policy papers into real-life demonstrations of things that work." He said, "We want to figure out what works at the local and state level" and give those models national attention.
Mr. DeMint, an active conservative partisan often at odds with his party's leadership, says he will "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component. Heritage is not just another grassroots political group."
Okay is anybody else picking up a strong scent of bullshit here?
WHY would somebody leave their job in the Senate to push and agenda that polls show the majority of Americans are no longer interested in anymore? That is kind of like quitting your job to head up advertising for New Coke after everybody started spitting it out and moving over to Pepsi.
So conspiracy theory time.
Is Jim Demint simply reading the writing on the walls and realizes that the Teabaggers are facing extinction, and that his influence in the Senate will be minimal at best?
Or, is he moving out of the way in a prearranged agreement to open the spot for South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley? (Though doing it now makes little sense.)
Or , and this is my favorite, is there a scandal brewing that DeMint is trying to avoid, and is therefore making himself a smaller target in the hopes that it will disappear?
Well right now I am not at all sure which one of these, if any, are the reason behind this surprising development. However I would be willing to bet that the reason provided is not even close to the actual reasons behind DeMint's decision.
No need for conspiracy theories. According to recent disclosure statements, DeMint is a long ways short of a millionaire. He's likely to make at least $1 million a year and is basically going to get the equivalent of tenure. So as long as he can keep the checks rolling in at Heritage, he'll make a ton of money. And he'll become just another conservative sucking on the teat of mega-donors without actually delivering any results. Nice to see them eating their seed corn.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but that doesn't mean there isn't also a scandal. Oh, please let there be a scandal.
DeleteConservative think tank? They're just messing with us, aren't they. OXYMORON !
ReplyDeleteRigging the election of his successor? That's what usually goes on when this early resignation happens.
ReplyDeleteIf the first name that comes to mind is Nikki Haley, there's this from Chris Cillizza of The Fix, on his Twitter feed:
DeleteThe Fix @TheFix
NOTED. RT @JSCollinsAP SC Gov. Nikki Haley on WORD-FM: "No, I will not be appointing myself. That's not even an option."
He quit for financial gain just like the Wasilla bitch.
ReplyDeleteHe saw a quick way to get rich quick. He only has to stay one year at Heritage to significantly increase his net worth. He is following the Palin path to the money.
ReplyDeletepain QUIT during her first term. demyth QUIT during his second term. still the operative word is QUIT. however, they both QUIT to make more money. so I guess he did pull a palin. :-)
ReplyDeleteGood riddance. Let's see how progressin conservativism does for ya without a title.
ReplyDeleteWell the bald fella has Tweeted or Farted according to the Asylum...DeMint is recommending that Nikki "yes I cheated on my hubby but so what" Haley appoint a token...umm...Tim Scott.
ReplyDeleteWho is Tim Scott you say...he's an African American teabagger that Baldy endorsed...yes...Baldy endorsed him...so it means they should pick...SOMEONE ELSE!
Mr Scott has the Curse on him now and it doesn't come off! LOL!!!
I'm with you, Gina, I didn't believe for a minute during Haley's Gov. campaign her denial that she didn't have something salacious going on with Will Folks, aka @FITNews.
DeleteYeah well that's a typical bit of Palin "research" . People who actually know South Carolina say Scott wants to be governor, not senator. Governor, senator, all of 'em, any of 'em....
DeleteScott is a 47 year old "confirmed bachelor". He and Senator Lindsey will make a nice pair.
DeleteYeah LOD had a clip of poor Lindsey's shock and surprise that his close personal friend, Jim Demint, announced he's leaving.
DeleteHow about it's a strong job offer with a raise and cushy benefits that's open now but may not be available after he loses his re-election bid in two years?
ReplyDeleteThe writing on the wall is, take it now as it may not be there later when you're unemployed.
Good bye and good riddance. Here's hoping his replacement isn't such an obstructionist douche.
It's hard for me to believe that he hasn't paved the way for a similarly RW-hardline replacement, rather than opening the door for a more moderate GOPster or (shock) a Dem (who'd probably be a Blue Dog anyway).
DeleteThere were rumblings he was going to run for Prez in 2012. He may be avoiding fiscal cliff and other embarrassing votes in the Senate and use this new position to prep for a run in 2016. But I also hope there is a scandal. He's such a GOP jerk.
ReplyDeleteHe's such a GOTeaP jerk.
DeleteDifference.
Right before the election, there was a story about how Ryan's "people" were looking for a place for him, something high-profile and outside of Congress so he can run for president without having to make a decision on anything embarrassing...interesting that HE didn't get his job...
Deletehmmm...
I agree that there is something more than meets the eye in this resignation. You put forward some good ideas on what it may be...
ReplyDeleteIn any case...he's a despicable person and I'm glad he'll be gone. He won't be able to put holds on legislation in an anonymous manner anymore. *spit

ReplyDelete'Thinktank' and DeMint in the same sentence -- Oxymoron.
It's supposedly to pay a million $$$$
Maybe he's getting teed up to fill the Palin right wing nut job slot at Fox. No wig to go askew and probably can memorize his talking points
ReplyDeleteHe's over 60. He is not wealthy. He was offered a job that will bring in a much bigger salary...?
ReplyDeleteOr there's a scandal brewing. ;)
Nah, he's a big, fat, whiny baby and doesn't want to have to compromise with the democrats or be in the minor party anymore.
DeleteOr...there's a scandal...
"So this would mean that DeMint would go from actually having an impact on the direction the country is going to just complaining about the direction this country is going. Isn't that kind of a demotion?"
ReplyDeleteAu contraire, mon ami. The Heritage Foundation gives the Senators their marching orders and makes up stuff for them. It's their own special Big Lie technique -- the one that Joe Nocera wrote about -- where they get an "expert" from the Heritage Foundation (or the Cato Institute or maybe Alaska) to testify and give an opinion which need not be factual. Then the congressvarmints quote the testimony as if it were true and they repeat it over and over and over and the Fox echo chamber chimes in along with some bloggers and Voila a new conservative counterfactual fact hits the streets.
The reason ? : MONEY !
ReplyDeleteHe is going to make much more there and we know what (some) teabaggers love above all don't we ? Think about $$$$$Palin - she must be so upset that he got the job and not her
Hmmmm....they offered him enough money? SOunds like his magic number was $8 m. Like Baldy it is all about the money.....enough of this job cr*a*p. :-)
ReplyDeletePlus he gets his Senate pension.
DeleteOr is he the poster child for "Butt Hurt Sore Loser, Taking My Ball and Going Home" syndrome?
ReplyDeleteOr both.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't make any sense. I have a feeling there is another shoe somewhere waiting to drop.
ReplyDeleteDon't all republicans quit to follow the money? Of course they do. Especially when they are getting close to being obsolete.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a chance to take Palin or West off the bench and put them in the game without an election.
ReplyDeleteI consider being an elected official of the Republican persuasion, nothing better than being a puppet: they can never vote their own conscience, only the party line.
ReplyDeleteIt is truly disheartening to see completely unanimous votes, on each and every bill. Why have more than ONE jerk sucking money out of the tax roles, if we know ahead of time how each will vote.
As a South Carolinian I say good riddance! He is such an embarrassment to the state! If only we could get rid of our Nikki Haley and Tim Scott too!
ReplyDeleteAnd Joe 'means jobs' aka 'you lie' as well as McCain Jr.
DeleteMy God Gryphen do you know what the lunatics over in the asylum are saying??? They want Haley to appoint Palin!
ReplyDeleteHere's a 'sampling'
"I know it's a stretch but she (Palin) supported Newt in SC and he won there. Im sure she could establish residency there in short order. It's a perfect fit and launching pad for her. If she runs for dog catcher, the left would explode and attack her family mercilessly. If appointed as Senator, she gets more protections and doesn't have to put her family through a primary process. If she was appointed now with Demint stepping down in Jan, the left would be caught flat footed. She got Haley elected there when nobody gave Haley a chance. Thirty plus days from now, nobody would be listening to Boehner, the total Media focus would be on Sarah. Don't know all the ins and out's but I think this one could be a gift horse. Take it if it's there. IMHO"
Sweet Jesus...Can you believe this shit?
I guess she is so "special" that she wouldn't need to be a resident of SC???
DeleteShe's special all right.
DeleteMr Demint is a radical, uncompromising Christian supremacist. He is for banning public school teachers who happen to be gay or pregnant single women.
ReplyDeleteThat statement alone should inform the entire planet of his savage intolerance, ignorance, and prejudice against anyone not in the ultra right evangelical camp
Of course he later tried to walk it back a bit, but
just like the Rape Brothers (Akin and Mourdock) he was saying EXACTLY what he really feels.
I wonder how many gays and pregnant single women Jesus hates?
LOSERS ARE LOSERS ARE LOSERS.
ReplyDelete1) Wide stance.
ReplyDelete2) Free money.
It just keeps getting better! Mark Sanford, fresh from the Appalachian Trail, wants to run for Demint's seat! LOL
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that he got caught with a young man
ReplyDeleteEven a wide stance won't oust a Senator any more. I'm thinking criminal with the threat of a long stretch in general population. The question is who has the dirt on him and why he is more valuable out of the senate than doing someone's bidding as a puppet with a compelling reason to obey.
ReplyDeleteDemint will enjoy a wealthy "retirement" on the pundit circuit. He's probably got dirt on some bigger fish which is why he's being given the gift of non-exposure.
BUT, a rent boy some where in the mix, undoubtedly.
None of the above...it's all about the money...he will now earn over $1,000,000 a year. sniff, sniff, sniff.
ReplyDeleteThis is really getting good...can't wait to see the news everyday to see another one explode!! I agree with all the posts, but I think the major reason is money, DeMint is the poorest in the Senate. He is doing a "Palin" and sees the writing on the wall. He is tired of going thru elections and actually working as a senator, now he can be the total blow hole he is and have a welcome seat at Faux. It will be interesting to see Rove VS DeMint for 2014, let us all pray there are enough decent Dems to win any new seats as these 2 will cancel each other out. Gov Haley is a disgrace to womanhood..I hope she loses too.
ReplyDeleteMore Palinesque than I first thought.
ReplyDeleteI heard on NPR today that his yearly salary will be over a million, whatever it is being six times more than his senate salary.
They also mentioned he's considering a run for president in 2016.
How Palin is that?
He did his job, it didn't work out (boo-hoo), this is his buy off. omg, it's the tea-mafia; he's not killed, he's just paid off and farmed out, how disgusting. What the hell is going on here in our democracy? Sorry, that was rhetorical.
ReplyDeleteI'll go with scandal. But plan B could be 'handwriting on the wall'.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED LOD's spot on this move. He replayed POTUS quoting Demint's "Waterloo" comment.
ReplyDeleteScandals? Any of em, all of em. Glad he's gone.
Next!
Yes Gryphen, no doubt the real reason for this move is not the stated one. Scandal seems most plausible. Or blackmail of some sort to give the seat to someone else.
ReplyDeleteBut this quote,'says he will "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component.', gave me the best laugh I've had all day. Even w/a severe backache I can't get the smile off my face every time I read it.
