Are you people crazy? |
Americans around the nation were shocked Friday as they heard about H.J.Res. 15. H.J.Res 15 proposes an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the Twenty-second Amendment. This would remove the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President. Rep. José Serrano (D- NY15) introduced the controversial joint resolution on Friday, the second day of the 2013 legislative session.
The last President to serve more than two terms was Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt served three full terms as President and was elected to a fourth term. Roosevelt died 83 days into his fourth term in office.
Congress passed the Twenty-second Amendment on March 21, 1947. The required number of states ratified it in 1951. There have been numerous attempts to repeal the Twenty-second Amendment, including a previous attempt by Rep. José Serrano. Rep. Serrano attempted to repeal the Twenty-second Amendment with H.J.Res. 5 in 2009.
Opponents of H.J.Res. 15 are being urged to inform their representatives of their opinions and to voice their opinion on PopVox.com.
Okay look, you all know I support the President effusively.
And hey I think a third Obama term would be GREAT for the country.
But let's face it, if this were to actually happen the idea of a new civil war would move from the realm of conspiracy theory to an actual "Everybody get down, he has a gun" fact. In other words there is NO WAY this could happen without this country going through an incredible upheaval that in the end would benefit no one.
And don't forget, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Could you imagine the damage that would have been done to the nation if Karl Rove had stolen a THIRD term for George W. Bush? Jesus the very idea makes my damn blood run cold!
Besides how is Hillary Clinton ever going to get to be President if Obama won't get the hell out of the Oval Office?
This is a humorous notion to irritate the Teabaggers with, to be sure, but ultimately I think it is a non-starter.
Why would President Obama even want to serve another term (third) with the bullshit he and his Administration put up w/on a daily basis?
ReplyDeleteBesides, I think it would be so damned refreshing to have Hillary Clinton elected to the office. I voted for President Obama both times, but think getting Hillary elected would really piss off the Republicans. Would be a kick in the butt having a Dem in that office for a total of four terms!!!
That's the only reason I would vote for her (she's too conservative for me). I want to see how many drop dead from a heart attack if she was elected.
DeleteThe same guy has been introducing this bill since the 1990s. It's nothing new.
ReplyDeleteOT: ANONYMOUS released this last night? Does it ring any Palin bellz? Anyone?
ReplyDeleteFor the sake of the author of the referenced article, I hope he or she is fluent in some language. That was painful to struggle through, from the sentence fragments to the overall rambling structure. If the concerns expressed are real, somebody should make the effort to rewrite this.
DeleteWOOHOO!I'm all for it. FOUR MORE YEARS!
ReplyDeleteFDR was elected 4 times. I wouldn't mind our President Obama being elected again.
ReplyDeletePLEASE, be careful of what you wish for!
DeleteAs much as many of us would like to see this President to have more time to help equalize the unequal systems of haves and have-nots, once established, it can and will be used by the opposition to give it more time to tear down that hard-earned system of justice.
I believe it was Winston Churchill who deemed democracy a messy system, but still better than all others.
Think about it...
No sane person would want to govern this country more than two terms.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the thought of the gop's head eploding would be amazing I wouldn't
wish the crazies in this place on anyone---except their own.
Are you saying our illustrious FDR was insane?
DeleteI think this "same guy" should introduce a bill limiting the terms of ALL members of Congress to 8 years.
ReplyDeleteAmen!!!
Delete... or at least put an age limit upon all members of Executive, Legislative and Judicial!
DeleteNow that I would wholeheartedly endorse!
Before you roast me, I am almost 73 and cognizant enough to know that mind and body do slow down as we age.
I understand this perspective, but we have term limits. They are called elections. The problem is that incumbents have an advantage because voters are lazy and may vote for name recognition, the devil you know, etc., and the taxpayer funded mailings trumpeting the incumbent's alleged accomplishments.
DeleteWith term linmits you end up with people coming to congress, knowing their time is limited, wanting to hit the ground running, and falling into the arms of the unpaid, unaccountable, behind the scenes lobbyists, consultants, and old-timers, who will be more than happy to "help" the newbies, and who are not subject to term limits but are there to serve their wallets and their masters for a long, long, time.
For every stupid dolt elected time and time again (Bachmann, Gohmert), there is a true servant of the people wise with years and experience and connections who can and does truly serve his/her district, state, or country (Sanders, Markey).
If this gets McConnell and other morons to stop telling the President 'to lead,' where they have no intention of ever following, I'm for it. Not for the amendment, but for the change in conversation. The GOP has no idea how to solve the deficit in a way that won't hurt average people, so they blame the President and Dems for not doing anything. Hey, Mitchie, we've told you the plan for years: CUT DEFENSE SPENDING. But you refuse to listen to anything sane. Instead, you'd OK more funds to turn schools into shooting ranges (I bet the NRA has a plan to offer 'rifle skills' in elementary phys ed next, taught by those retired military militiamen with PTSD) and other countries into killing fields. All in the name of God and country too. Wow.
ReplyDeleteHe's not the only one to introduce such a bill, Mitch McConnell did it during Bill Clintons Presidency, I suppose Turtleman wanted Bill to be President for life lol
ReplyDeleteI think this is a brilliant distraction that will REALLY bring out the crazy from the right.
ReplyDeleteAnd here's another reason republicans heads will explode and his name is Chuck Hagel. As they are currently heard bashing him (now that Obama supports him), their own words of praise for the very same Chuck Hagel are being broadcast: Hhttp://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2013/01/republican-senators-praise-chuck-hagel.php?ref=fpa
ReplyDeleteA similar bill was introduced during Reagan's administration. There is nothing new about this. Lighten up.
ReplyDeleteI am not inclined to think Hillary will try again, but I'll support her all the way if she does. I wouldn't wish a third term on our president. Eight years of what he's gone through is certainly enough punishment for anyone. I just want him to get through it safely. I don't trust these crazy types one little bit.
ReplyDeleteI agree Lynne. I was about to post something similar.
DeleteWell said, Lynne.
DeleteI don't see this happening unless the Right pushes it through to get another Bush in office, besides we've all seen what the office puts the man in it through...and I don't think there are many presidents who would want a third term after everything they go through. It's an interesting proposal on that guy's part, but I don't think it's going anywhere and considering how it could bring us someone like a right wing Chavez into control, it would not be prudent.
ReplyDeleteM. from MD
I would love nothing more than having President Obama have another term, not because of the reaction of the right, but to witness all the good this man could do for our country! The eight years under Cheyney/Bush still haunts me. Can anyone imagine 12?
ReplyDeleteCould you imagine the damage that would have been done to the nation if Karl Rove had stolen a THIRD term for George W. Bush? Jesus the very idea makes my damn blood run cold!
ReplyDeleteexact a mundo.
Congress should not b a full time job either. Term limits, then out with the old, in with the new. Like high school student council.
I don't know why the RWNJ's would get upset about this proposal, it's only happened every two years for the last decade or longer. It dies in the House and never goes anywhere and it has NOTHING to do with President Obama. Of course, they want to attribute everything to being his fault or pretend he's trying to take over the country. It's the only way they keep people attached to them, by keeping them afraid!
ReplyDeleteJosé Serrano introduced this legislation every year since 2001. So, it's not about President Obama.
