Five people shot accidentally at various gun shows during "Gun Appreciation Day." Boy that appreciation really stings!

Courtesy of TPM:

• In Indianapolis, a man shot himself when his gun went off outside a gun show. From WISH-TV:

A person who was loading a gun outside of the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show at the State Fairgrounds was accidentally shot when his gun discharged Saturday afternoon. ... The man, identified as Emory L. Cozee, 54, was walking back to his car, was loading his .45 caliber semi-automatic and accidentally shot himself in the hand, [police said.]

• In Raleigh, N.C., three people were injured when a shotgun went off at a gun show there. From the News & Observer:

A 12-gauge shotgun discharged shortly after 1 p.m. as its owner unzipped its case on a table for a security officer to check it at a security entrance at the Dixie Gun & Knife Show, according to Joel Keith, police chief of the state Agriculture Department. Keith said birdshot pellets hit Janet Hoover, 54, of Benson, in the right torso; Linwood Hester, 50, of Durham, in the right hand; and Jake Alderman, a retired Wake County sheriff’s deputy from Wake Forest, in the left hand. Hoover and Hester were taken to WakeMed, but officials said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

• In Ohio, a dealer at a gun show accidentally fired a gun, induring one. From WJW-TV:

Jim Conrad, event organizer, said there were about 200 people there at the time, and they heard one gun shot. Conrad said a visitor to the event had handed an exhibitor his gun to look at. It apparently was loaded, and while the exhibitor was looking at the gun, it accidentally went off, hitting another man in the arm. Meanwhile, gun rights advocates touted Gun Appreciation Day -- which was organized to oppose efforts in Washington, D.C. to pass new gun regulations after Newtown -- as a success. Dave Workman, a former NRA board member, wrote that gun rights activists in Washington state showed up in big numbers at a gun show in Puyallup and a rally in Olympia.

Would it be wrong for me to say how muhc I appreciate these unbelievably stupid people for helping those of us on the side of more gun control make our case to the American people?

Or would that be kicking a stupid person when their down....and bleeding out on the floor?

Remember, gun shows don't kill people, they just help gather all the gun nuts and deadly weapons in one place so that people are easier to pick off.

Wow, I wonder who is responsible for the medical treatment of the unfortunate victims?

And what would "Gun Appreciation Day" be without accidentally wounding people...goes to show you guns in the wrong hands do kill and injure people.

The irony of the situation is truly wasted on these fucking idiots. Most gun shows REQUIRE that the weapons be unloaded, yet they feel it is appropriate for these same fucking morons to go out in public with them loaded!

Why would the shows not allow loaded weapons? I mean what could go wrong?

  6. They call these accidents but from where I see it, the gun is working exactly as it is supposed to work and doing what it was designed to do, so how can that be an accident?

And, if you want to keep tabs on just how many people are killed by guns on a daily basis, check out @GunDeaths on Twitter.

A better way to check whether a weapon is loaded is to require people to point the gun at themselves and pull the trigger... better yet, point the gun at the show organizer.

If there were insurance on these weapons, the persons insurance Co would have to pay the bill. It's a safe bet that the person or co, that got this event together is a LLC. They will not take any resposibility, but they want everybody else to be responsible.

    This is a brilliant plan!

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, who heads the Democratic mayors group, said the initiative grew out of an epiphany this week: that cities spend millions of dollars a year as customers of these companies, even while their agendas clash on Capitol Hill.

“When we were lobbying on Capitol Hill, it became clear that our goal of trying to pass laws that make it easier to make our communities safe was going to be opposed by the gun and ammunition manufacturers. We recognize as mayors, we help fund that, because we are one of the largest purchasers of guns and ammunition in the country,” Rybak told POLITICO in an interview Saturday morning.

“So at the Democratic mayors meeting last night, we agreed that we would all go back to our communities, gather information from our police chiefs and procurement officers about how many guns and how much ammunition we purchase, bring that in from the Democratic mayors so that we have a common list of how much money we’re spending, what purchases are pending and who we’re buying from.”

In all these cases, the people should have to pay their own medical bills, not insurance coverage. Why should people in an insurance pool have to pay higher premiums to cover insanity and stupidity. Maybe if these idiots were indebted to the hospitals, ambulances, rehab, etc. for their own actions, this would take some of the "macho" out of their sails when they are then facing financial obligations or possibly bankruptcy for these "accidental" shootings.

I posted this on one of the earlier threads but wanted to see if I could enlist more like-minded souls. I wrote to Rupert Murdoch's office urging him to take a stand against his own network (Fox) for promoting guns. He tweeted several times after SAndy Hook and the NY shootings demanding an end to gun maddness. His network, however, is promoting the maddness. If he truly believes what has been tweeted in his name, shouldn't he do something about Hannity, O'Reilly and Fox and Friends who are defending the insanity?

'I don't like guns, don't own any and, truth be told, don't really respect the choice to have one if it's not fur hunting. In my cultural consciousness, a gun is nothing more than a tool for killing.'

..."A study of ATF gun trafficking cases found that the largest conduits of gun trafficking involved illegal straw purchases (someone buying the gun for someone who can't) and corrupt licensed gun dealers evading gun sales laws," Webster told me last week.

"A separate ATF study found that over half of guns recovered from criminals and crime scenes were traced to 1% of licensed dealers. I've conducted several studies demonstrating that when there is greater regulation and oversight of gun dealers, and when they are vulnerable to civil and criminal penalties if they do not obey gun sales laws, far fewer guns flow into the illicit gun market where criminals obtain their guns."

Are these idiots examples of LaPierre's "a good guy with a gun"?

Off topic: just watched VP Biden's inauguration over at Politico. Low-keyed ceremony surrounded by his family with a small audience. Dignified yet warm. Couldn't help but think what a circus it would have been had Palin been the VP. But then I realized there is no way I have enough imagination to visualize it. Just when I think Palin and company have reached bottom, they show up a week or so later and reach a new low. Would Piper elbow the Justice out of the way? Would Trip stick out his tongue or tell the Justice to shut up? Would Palin wear her GWG tee shirt, the Belmont girls, her wonder woman bracelet and her hooker shoes or would she borrow one of Bristol's DWTS outfits? Would they all pack guns in honor of day after gun appreciation day? Would they stand on a polar bear rug? Would she change the oath to "the constitution but especially the 2nd amendment"? Would they wash their hair, shower and shave for the occasion? Would she swear on a bible or would her Jesus belt buckle suffice? Biden's bible had been in his family since the late 1800's. I imagine the Palins would be hard pressed to find any book in their house let alone a bible. They'd have to use People magazine.

Albuquerque Shooting: Teenager Kills 5 People, Including 3 Children

A teenage boy fatally shot two adults and three children inside an Albuquerque home, authorities said Sunday.

The boy was arrested and booked on murder and other charges in connection with the shootings Saturday night, Bernalillo County sheriff's spokesman Aaron Williamson said.

The victims' identities haven't been released, and the boy's motive and connection to the five victims weren't immediately unknown. Williamson said investigators were trying to determine if the victims were related.

Investigators also were seeking to determine who owned several guns that were found at the home, one of which was a semi-automatic military-style rifle.

Authorities weren't releasing the name or age of the teenager accused in the attack. He was booked on two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

Yah yah yah. And in 2010 3,092 were killed by drivers distracted by using their cell phones. That's about 8.5 people killed per day. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/12/nhtsa-cell-phones-killed-3092-car-crashes-/1#.UPxDOGf08Qs

And about 1.6 million auto accidents per year are caused by people using cell phones. That's 4,383 accidents per day caused by cell phone usage. Or 1,461 times higher than were caused at gun shows Saturday. So we're going to have to confiscate your cell phone to keep them out of the hands of stupid people.

Most states have legislated stiff penalties for texting and driving and some have completely outlawed cell phone usage while driving. Results from restrictive legislation take time to be realized, just as it will take years to realize the benefit from gun reform legislation. Give it time my friend and change will be felt. Just because something takes time to come to fruition doesn't mean we shouldn't start today.

Sixty Percent Of Young Americans Are Considering Gun Ownership

Whites, men, and people who play a lot of video games were especially likely to want guns, according to a recent poll.

Researcher Jennifer L. Lawless and her team surveyed 4,000 high school and college students to find out whether they wanted to have a gun when they had a household of their own. The majority were at least thinking about it. A sampling of the results:

I think everyone on "BOTH sides of the aisle" need to calm the fuck down.
I don't LOVE guns, but I like shooting my guns, in particular my sks. But more than that, guns (mine or other ppls guns scare me to the point of insisting that I understand them on a logical/historical/statistical and most importantly, a SAFETY level.
I took "Basic firearms & Safety" a two college credit class at UAS Juneau TWICE and I paid for them out of pocket. Bruce Bowler is somewhat of an iconic hero around here and if you have a chance, take his class!

The cowards hiding behind the 2nd Amendment are in need of some enlightenment: Get a CLUE! No one is coming to take your guns!

Yes, reinstating some of the gun restriction may help but from all appearances, it just causes the paranoid-faux news watchers to buy MORE guns! The NRA & Gun brokers must be rolling all over Ben Franklin's made into their new beds ;)

WE are a country of guns, this will not change. Education & Safety in public middle/high school should be required. The Federal Govt. should fund states to have "Free" Basic Firearm and safety classes offered to anyone; Gun owner or not.
