Gallup finds Hillary Clinton is the most admired woman in the world and Sarah Palin is the fifth most admired person in the world. Wait, what?

Courtesy of the Washington Post:

A new Gallup poll again hands the secretary of state the title of the “most admired woman” in the world, with 21 percent selecting her. First lady Michelle Obama comes in a distant second at 5 percent, followed by Oprah Winfrey at 4 percent.

Okay well all of that makes sense, I even kind of understand Condi Rice at the number four spot, but Palin at five? WTF?

And how in the HELL does she beat out the extraordinarily brave Malala Yousafzai? That is ridiculous!

So what is she so admired for?

Her political presence? There isn't one.

Her intelligence? Seriously?

Her reality show career? Hah!

Her parenting? Double Hah!

Seriously I simply do NOT get it.

I went to the actual Gallup site to see if it was the way the question was asked. This is what they said:

The open-ended nature of the question produces the names of people with high top-of-mind name identification, most often hailing from the world of government and politics; the list also includes individuals who have become famous serving humanitarian causes and others whose fame comes from the business and entertainment worlds.

Okay so essentially it is based on name recognition.

These are the names of people that the individuals asked knew off of the top of their heads. And sadly Palin was mentioned quite a lot this last year. Sure mostly it was to mock her, or use her as a comparison for how badly the Paul Ryan pick was, but you not THAT bad.

I would LOVE to have heard a follow up question asking the respondents WHY they chose who they chose. I think for those who chose Palin wall you would hear is the sound of crickets.

If it makes you feel any better look who shows up as3rd, 4th, and 5th on the mens side of the poll.

Oh yeah. Mitt Romney as the third most admired man, and George W. Bush as the fifth, certainly puts the whole thing into perspective.

Guess which polling group is now the LEAST admired? Yeah, that's right Gallup.

Eh, she got a few votes from kooky religious types who couldn't think of any other woman that they admire.

The people I've met who admire Sarah Palin (yes, they sadly exist) are typically the low-information, high-religion folks who bought the hype about her in 2007 and haven't educated themselves. Typically they think of themselves as "Rill Murkkkans" and are terrified (and therefore claim to disdain) of anyone with education or a middle-class job.

With ANY amount of luck, we won't have to listen to #5 much longer! I'm not wishing HER any BAD luck, I am merely wishing US some GOOD luck!

Unfortunately elections in the USA have devolved to the point where they are more American Idol than education, knowledge, policy, public speaking, and political savvy.

Can you imagine a world where candidates would debate for hours without a moderator? Write their own speeches? Hold forth intelligently on sundry topics?

Doesn't happen much any more, although it does remind me of when Prez Obama went to the US house of Reps, and took questions for 1.5 hours, and held his own.

Candidates now just bloviate, inject a strong dose of religious fervor, a bit of flag waving and baby kissing, and you end up with fools like George W Bush and $arah Palin on the tickets.

THe only reason that Palin is even on that list is because John McCain was dumb enough to think that WOMEN would vote for a small town mayor who got lucky

This world exists. Obama is proof. And I have seen glimpses of it in others.

Watching someone think on his feet and stand his ground tells you all you need to know.

      Hillary, no doubt, is formidable.

      But Debbie Wasserman-Schultz kicks ass.

      And inspires.

Personally, I took his meaning to be where ALL the candidates did it - like in the 50's and back. But that was long before we got crap like professional politicians.

Just a few outstanding people just isn't the same! I'm not knocking THEM, just that we have few others.

If you saw how inaccurate the Gallop Poll was during the election you won't find this surprising.Hell they were about as accurate as Faux News.

MY laugh of the day? Looking for The Jetsons' theme song on YT, this was recommended after. Even they have her tagged in "space" because she IS.

    Happy New Year!

BWHAHAHAHA, Bristol tried to help steal the contest and FAILED again. Well, let's see how long Joey Junkie hangs around now. Carly ROCKS,Bristol, and she 'WORKS HARD'. Not like that Fat Pregnant Palin did at DWTS.

THEY were in a dead heat ALL DAY. He was winning by 100, then she pulled ahead. That happened like 4 times.

What's funny is, before Bristol mentioned him online, he was in like 4th place.

12:45 PM Probably some of the same scam voters from DWTS. It did not work this time. Carly Davis whipped J. Junker just like Todd was whipped on S.E.S., by a woman. It's ironic that Todd lost to the very gender that he has disrespected for so many years.

The 2012 election proved Gallup is full of shit.

    My top five:

    1. Gabby.

    2. The teachers in Sandy Hook who gave their lives to protect their students.

    3. Every female who took to the streets in Delhi.

    4. Michelle.

    5. Aung San Suu Kyi.

Honorable mentions: Susan Rice (She was awesome on the Sunday political shows) and Elizabeth Warren.

I think that in ordered to be admired, the person ought to actually DO something, like those brave teachers in Newtown, CT. Before Sarah Palin was actually chosen to be VP, she gave a snide interview where she asked if the Vice President actually DID anything. If we are talking about people who stand as a symbol and galvanize thinking in a positive direction, the little girl from Pakistan is a better example than Sarah will ever be.

I like your list but I'd put Hillary Clinton in the top five also, maybe tied with someone else.

How reliable is Gallup? They predicted that Mitt Romney would win the presidency with mucho electoral votes. They were wrong wrong wrong. Why in the world is Condi Rice on that list? She hasn't done anything for four years where Aung san sui kyi has lead a democracy movement in a nation that hasn't seen democracy since 1960. No disrespect, but the Rev.Billy Graham is senile and hasn't done anything for years. If he can move miracles, he would be in better health. Gallup's polling methods are back there with land lines and print newspapers. I think right now more people are tweeting about the latest Kardashian pregnancy than Sarah Palin.

gallup pissed away any reputation as a credible pollster they may have had in their absurd polls reflecting rmoney was ahead in the polls in the recent election. They are now as reputable as rasmussen...lol

I absolutely agree with you. It seemed about midway through the campaign season that Gallop started to be more and more inaccurate with similar polling results as Rusmussen. They were both were outliers in their polling results.

Does Gallup mean "most admired in the United States"? You wouldn't get that same list anywhere else on the planet.

  16. Anonymous12:52 PM

The vote was for the most admired men and women "living in any part of the world" - NOT "in" the world.

It's all about celebrity. You can tell that the only English women known to self-absorbed, ignorant Americans are Margaret Thatcher and the Queen of England.

The way you have written it, anyone would think Palin was one of the world's most admired women. She is NOT.

So the woman who hires 'WITCH DOCTORS' and has done NOTHING other than Quit as Governor midterm, Grift money from 'WEAK FOLLOWERS', taught her 2 Daughters
and oldest son to be UNWED PARENTS, and married a PIMP is in 5th place with 3 others? Just think, if she had educated herself and worked hard, where she would be on that list.

  19. May we all just refer to Palin in the future as #5
As in 5th place no ribbon or show...just nothin'.

Keep in mind Gallup's GOP bias - obviously in all things. I'd put Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney, John McCain and George W. Bush on a list of my "least admired people" in a heartbeat.

First of all, I want to see how and when they conducted the poll. How and where did they select the test groups? What size was each test group, and how was the question framed. Second, notice that Hilary has 21% and Palin (tied with 3 others) only 2%.

The polled groups were probably people of different nationalities living in the South.

Gallup was sure dead wrong with its predictions of the election.
