Gomer Pyle gets gay married. Well Golly!

Courtesy of ABC:

The actor best known for playing the TV character Gomer Pyle in the 1960s has married his male partner of 38 years.

Hawaii News Now reports Jim Nabors and his partner, Stan Cadwallader, traveled from their Honolulu home to Seattle to be married Jan. 15.

Gay marriage became legal in Washington state last month.

The 82-year-old Nabors says you've got to solidify something when you've been together as long as they have.

The couple met in 1975 when Cadwallader was a Honolulu firefighter. Cadwallader is 64.

Nabors says he's been open about his homosexuality to co-workers and friends but never acknowledged it to the media before.

82,  This man had to wait until he was 82 years old before feeling that the world was accepting enough for him to marry the person that he has loved for 37 years. That is just fucking sad on so many levels.

And do you know what?

I bet if Mayberry U.S. had been a real place that they would have gladly accepted their one time mechanic's sexuality and welcomed he and his partner with open arms. No he would not have had to hide who he was to Sheriff Taylor and the gang.

I have to say that almost every day I am reminded of how amazing the times we live in are today, and feel a real sense of sorrow for those who are trying so hard to fight the progress that this country is making.

P.S. By the way Jim Nabors was a liberal even back in the days of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C as evidence by this clip of the show from the 1970's.

I have always loved Jim Nabors and I am so happy he could finally marry his true love. It is a shame he had to wait so long.

    1. He did not have to wait. It was his (and his partner's) decision.

They could have gotten married in 2004 in Massachusetts, 2008 in Connecticut, 2009 in Vermont, and more. They didn't have to wait until this year for Seattle.

So, they had to wait until 2004 (and for some reason waited even longer). Why split hairs?

Right now I have one of those happy/sad emotions:
I am very happy that these two, who have shared their lives "for better, for worse, in sickness and in health" for more than 37 years, can finally have their legal ceremony of marriage.
That they were forced to wait this long, and that too many other equally committed-to-each-other couples are still denied Equality under the Law is saddening.

    Congratulations,you are now formally espoused!

That clip from Gomer Pyle was trippy, man! How far we have come. How much further we have to go. Thanks, Gryph.

Study shows ‘coming out’ is good for your health

A recent study showed that for LGBT people, the act of “coming out of the closet” and opening up to friends and family resulted in better health outcomes by reducing the effects of stress on the body. According to a report published Tuesday in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, people who come out have lower levels of the stress hormones and suffer from fewer instances of depression, burnout and anxiety than their peers who are not open about their orientation.

Researchers at Canada’s Center for the Study of Human Stress (CSHS) at Louis H. Lafontaine Hospital in Montreal found that LGBT people who were open with the people around them had a lower “allostatic load” than people who were not. Allostatic load is the strain and wear and tear inflicted on the body’s systems caused by the stress hormone cortisol.

“Our goals were to determine if the mental and physical health of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals differs from heterosexuals and, if so, whether being out of the closet makes a difference. We used measures of psychiatric symptoms, cortisol levels throughout the day, and a battery of over twenty biological markers to assess allostatic load,” said the study’s lead author Robert-Paul Juster.

“Contrary to our expectations,” he continued, “gay and bisexual men had lower depressive symptoms and allostatic load levels than heterosexual men. Lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals who were out to family and friends had lower levels of psychiatric symptoms and lower morning cortisol levels than those who were still in the closet.”

Fox News Sinks to a 12 Year Low in Ratings as Obama Approval Hits 60%

Here are two pieces of news that may seem unrelated, but aren’t. President Obama’s job approval rating has hit a four year high of 60% at the same time as Fox News’ ratings plummet to a 12 year low.

In January, Fox News has its worst prime time month in the key age 25-54 demographic since August 2001. Greta Van Susteren had her worst month ever on the network, and her show registered the lowest prime time ratings for 10 PM on Fox since July of 2008. While MSNBC’s ratings were up 9% in total viewers , Fox News registered their single worst day with viewers age 25-54 July of 2008.

Meanwhile, a new poll released today by ABC News/Washington Post revealed that President Obama’s favorability rating has reached its highest level since November 2009. Obama’s favorability is now at 60%, and has grown ten points since the summer. Obama now has more more people strongly in favor of him (39%) than strongly opposed (26%). The president has a 60% favorable rating with Independents, and a 68% favorable rating with moderates. The president also has a 66% with young adults, and middle/lower income people.

It is isn’t a coincidence that as approval of President Obama soars, Fox News’ ratings plummet.

I snoozed and you beat me to the "Shazams"!!!

Ok, here's one... "Judy, Judy, Judy..." , or was that Cousin Goober who said that?

Good for Nabors & his partner. But it IS (IMO) a cotton-pickin' shame that so many folks would deny others the same civil rights they enjoy.

I loved me some Andy Griffith Shows, especially the early ones in b/w. And Gomer Pyle, USMC, too. I might watch some shows on DVD tonight.

Since you brought up the "Judy" thing I had to google it because my SIL has heard that all her life. It was Cary Grant that it originated from. Here is the link.

I'm the goober that still calls my sister's best friend Judy x 3 whenever I see her once every couple of years.

Six Times More People Tuned in For Clinton/Obama Interview than Watch Fox News

Another blow to the Republican myth that America is a conservative nation was delivered when over six times more people watched the Obama/Clinton 60 Minutes interview than watch Fox News.

According to Nielson, the Obama/Clinton joint interview was watched by 11.65 million Americans. On average 1.6-2 million people in the United States watch Fox News each day. In a non-election year the political audience is smaller across the board, and there is a huge difference between broadcast and cable television ratings, but the belief that is held by both the mainstream media and the Republicans that there is some huge outcry for conservative programming is flat out wrong.

The ratings for the Clinton/Obama interview are both a tribute to the star power of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and a reminder that there really is no one in the conservative movement who can match the country’s top Democrats in terms of the ability to draw an audience. The mainstream media and the Republican Party both pushed hard for Sarah Palin to be their answer, but we all know how that turned out.

The reality is that the political landscape is shifting. The myth of a vast conservative America goes back to Nixon’s “silent majority,” and it has fed the conservative persecution complex about the media for decades. The reality is that conservatives control talk radio, and the top cable television network. This messaging apparatus has worked tirelessly day and night to diminish the popularity of top Democrats like Clinton and Obama, and they have resoundingly failed.

Fox News is supposedly the giant among cable news, but they are dwarfed by the power and popularity of the current president and the outgoing secretary of state. The influence and power of Fox News are both overstated and overrated. If Fox News was effective in any way, President Obama’s job approval rating wouldn’t be touching record highs, and Hillary Clinton would not be the most popular political figure in the country.

I first saw this on a right wing facebook page yesterday and the woman who posted it knew her. It's sad Chicagos still a dangerous place in terms of crimes like this. NYC has changed significantly, though shiz still happens and the mafia is alive and well. Difference is, mafia kingpins run one of the best prep schools in the country, right in NYC.

Sorry for the tangent. I was just mentioning that to point out that just because someones been associated with negatives things, it doesn't mean they're bad. No one except us as individuals knows our true story. Judgment is an ugly human trait.

Bless this younf lady who died no one wants to see this happen, though tragedy has been a part of history since before time began.

He lives vibrantly (mostly a lime green, but this pukey shade of chartreuse if the lighting's bad), doesn't judge people and reminds me every day that bad things happen and have always happened since time began, which is approximately six thousand years!

Ratings are down because Sarah's not on the network anymore. Fox will probably go out of business without her. Swallow your pride and call Sarah, Roger. This is true because I read it at C4P, which is noted for its astute commentary and insight in political analysis.

President Obama is riding a wave of personal popularity into his second term, with his highest favorability ratings since his first year in office, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Fully 60 percent of Americans have a favorable impression of Obama in the new poll, up slightly from October but a clear shift in opinion from an election year in which his ratings hovered in the mid-to-low 50s. And by 39 percent to 26 percent, the president now has more “strongly” positive ratings than strongly negative reviews, breaking a two-year stretch in which intense opposition was on par with (or higher than) intense support.

I loved watching his shows, and am glad they got married, before having kids. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but people DO talk!!!

Anderson Cooper had a story on his soon to be defunct talk show. This high school kid came out while doing a speech accepting an acting award. He compared his good acting to his everyday life, playing the role of "Straight Jacob", he expected rejection or at least silence, but got applause.

He's fortunate, he has parents who love him unconditionally, and always did.

Yes What an amazing time to share this big blue marble!
