HIllary Clinton testifying about Benghazi. Update!

I am right now watching Hillary testifying, and she is kicking some serious ass.

I personally believe this is a witch hunt, but the Secretary of State is handling it with poise and seriousness. She even goes into more detail with her answers than the committee is asking for.

Here is her opening statement. I will have more later, but you all can treat this as an open thread if you so desire.

Update: Here is the live stream.
Live stream videos at Ustream My favorite part so far, courtesy of the Atlantic Wire:

Clinton getting angry as Johnson continues to harp on Rice. She lean forward in her chair and raises her voice when Johnson tries to challenge her on misleading info. "We had four dead Americans!... Whether it was attack preplanned by terrorists or it because of a guy out for a walk one night .. what difference does it make?"

And you Senator Johnson have JUST been taken to school!

Update 2: In case you missed it.

I really cannot watch this clip often enough.

Update 2: And they're done. Hillary is walking out of the chamber picking bits of Senator from between her teeth. Now she is going to the House for the second course.

Silly Republicans, committee hearings are for grownups!

It's Time To Stop Pretending John McCain Is A "Hero"

The list of really stupid things that McCain has said and done over the years is indeed a long one, and too many times the traditional media and pundits let him of the hook because he's "hero." He was tortured after all! Some say his idea of a "joke" (recall "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran....but seriously folks...") has turned him into one.

I disagree. He's not a joke. He's pathetic and a coward who hides behind something he once was. His "record" as a Senator proves it.

To "joke" as he does is to mock anyone who was tortured. To do so is to mock anyone who served, along with my father and my husband who both did, the latter in Vietnam. John McCain, of all people knows this. But he does it anyway.

    Because he's a "hero."

Wrong. He's anything but. He ceased to be a long time ago.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/01/23/1181389/-It-s-Time-To-Stop-Pretending-John-McCain-Is-A-Hero

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Wednesday told Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that her testimony thus far at a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the September attack in Benghazi, Libya was "not satisfactory."

"There are many questions that are unanswered and the answers that you've given this morning are not satisfactory to me," McCain said. He pointedly criticized the Obama administration for not providing "the security that was needed" in Libya after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi.

Clinton suggested that members of Congress are to blame for delaying some of the assistance that had been requested by the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya.

Hillary Clinton reaches new heights of political popularity

As she heads to Capitol Hill this morning to testify regarding the death of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, Hillary Clinton has something her former legislative colleagues lack: the broad support of the American public.

Fully 67 percent of all Americans in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll now express favorable views of the outgoing secretary of state, a record high in the survey for Clinton, albeit by a single percentage point. By contrast, just 19 percent of people said they approved of the way Congress was doing its job in a Post-ABC poll released last week.

HILLARY THROWS DOWN!'WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?'

..."With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans," Clinton responded, raising her voice at Johnson, who continued to interrupt her. "Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk last night who decided to kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator."

Clinton continued, defending the State Department's efforts in the wake of the assault.

"Honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is people were trying their best in real time to get to the best information," she said, before blasting the senator's line of questioning. "Give me a break, Senator Johnson. This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen."

Her testimony focused not only on the attack but the growing threat from extremists in northern Africa, pointing out that Libya was not an isolated incident.
"The Arab revolutions have scrambled power dynamics and shattered security forces across the region," she said. "And instability in Mali has created an expanding safe haven for terrorists who look to extend their influence and plot further attacks of the kind we saw just last week in Algeria."

She said the Obama administration is pressing for a greater understanding of the hostage-taking and rescue effort there that left three Americans dead.

In a packed hearing room, Clinton parried tough questions from Republicans, offering a detailed timeline of events on Sept. 11 and the Obama administration efforts to aid the Americans in Libya while simultaneously dealing with protests in Cairo and other countries.

She also took House Republicans to task for recently stripping $1 billion in security aid from the hurricane relief bill.

In something of a valedictory, Clinton noted her robust itinerary in four years and her work, nearly 1 million miles and 112 countries.

"My faith in our country and our future is stronger than ever. Every time that blue and white airplane carrying the words 'United States of America' touches down in some far-off capital, I feel again the honor it is to represent the world's indispensable nation. And I am confident that, with your help, we will continue to keep the United States safe, strong, and exceptional."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had an emotional moment Wednesday speaking in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

"For me, this is not just a matter of policy, it's personal. I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews. I put my arms around the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, the sons and daughters, and the wives left alone to raise their children," she said, her voice breaking.

"It has been one of the great honors of my life to lead the men and women of the State Department and USAID," she continued. "They get up and get to work every day, often in difficult dangerous circumstances, because they believe, as we believe, the United States is the most extraordinary force for peace and progress the world has ever known."

"And when we suffer tragedies overseas, as we have, the number of Americans applying to the foreign service actually increases," she said. "That tells us everything we need to know about what kind of patriots I'm talking about."

Republicans act as if every detail of this attack was known immediately. Sean Hannity continues to repeat the lie that the Benghazi attacks were "watched in real time" (not true), but the best rebuttal to this nonsense is the Sandy Hook tragedy.
Think about all the misinformation that swirled around those shootings, there was a second shooter,he was let in to the school, it was the mother's class, he was misidentified as his brother etc., it took days to get the real story. Sandy Hook took place in this country, in the daylight, with a single gunman in a single location.

Compare that to Benghazi; foreign country, foreign language, chaos all over the region, multiple attackers in multiple locations and it all took place in the dark. Yet according to republicans we should have had all the answers immediately, what nonsense.

Hillary Clinton Eats the Republican Party for Lunch at Benghazi Hearing

Senate Republicans found themselves absolutely dominated by Sec. of State Hillary Clinton at today’s Benghazi hearing. Sec. Clinton didn’t just testify. She owned the room.

Here is Sec. Clinton smacking down tea party Sen. Ron Johnson’s Fox News talking points about “misleading” of the country over whether or not the Benghazi attack was caused by protesters or terrorists.

Clinton answered Johnson’s attempt to try to drum up a scandal for the White House sternly and directly, “With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest, or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they’d go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make! It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator. Now honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is that people were trying in real time to get to the best information. The IC has process I understand going with the other committees to explain how these talking points came out. But you know, to be clear, it is from my perspective, less important today, looking backwards as to deciding why these militants decided they did it than to find them and bring them to justice, and then maybe we’ll figure out what was going on in the meantime.”

Later, John McCain broke out his usual grandstanding for the television cameras and tried to blame the administration for the lack of security and military assistance in Libya, and he was slapped with some facts by Sec. Clinton.

Clinton replied to McCain, “With respect to helping the Libyans, and that also goes to the question Sen. Rubio asked, we will provide a list of everything we were doing and were attempting to do, but I will also tell you that since March 2011 congressional holds have been placed for many months for aid to Libya. We’ve had frequent congressional complaints. Why are we doing anything for Libya? It is a wealthy country. It has oil. Disagreement from some sources that we should have never been part of any UN mission in Libya. Currently, the House has holds on bilateral security assistance, on other kinds of support, for anti-terrorism assistance. So we gotta get our act together between the administration and the congress.”

This is the hearing that Republicans have been waiting for, and so far Sec. Clinton has absolutely eaten them alive. They have failed in their goal of pinning the failure of leadership badge on her in order to damage any potential 2016 presidential candidacy, and they have failed to turn this into the broader White House scandal that they so desperately crave.

As a former senator, Sec. Clinton understands the egos and grandstanding associated with these types of hearings. At times she looked flat out bored while Republicans droned on and on with their Fox News talking points and hints of conspiracies.

Sec. Clinton took responsibility for what happened, but also was very moving as she shed tears while talking about standing beside President Obama and watching flag draped caskets being carried off the plane. In a roomful of raging Senate egos, Hillary Clinton ran the show. The GOP’s past (McCain) and their future (Rubio) were no match for Clinton.

Mrs. Clinton looked like a president at this hearing. She was head and shoulders above her questioners. The scary thought for the Republican Party is that she did this to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. They’re supposed to be the smart Republicans. Things could get even uglier for GOP when she testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Hillary spoke to the republican's as they should be talked everyday, with as little respect as possible, until they begin to act and think as full adults adults that are able show they have some intelligence.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) on Wednesday said Hillary Clinton's testimony on the Benghazi, Libya attack amounted to "theatrics" intended to dodge Johnson's line of questioning.

“I wasn’t trying to get under her skin, I was just trying to get a relatively simple question answered, which she didn’t really want to answer," Johnson said on Wisconsin's WTMJ radio, according to Politico.

“I’m not trying to be obnoxious here, I’m just trying to get the answers I believe the American people deserve to hear," he added. "It’s been four months."

A visibly riled Clinton shot back at Johnson during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, after he questioned why State Department officials didn’t retrieve information from evacuated U.S. diplomatic staff on the eve of the attack.

I watched that segment. She answered his questions politely, reasonably, and patiently until approximately his third interruption to say essentially "Yes fine but what I'm asking is can't you just admit that this was a massive conspiracy and cover up? Because that's all I'm interested in."

It was at that point that she decided to kick his ass, not before.

I think it's a good strategy though, GOP, just keep it up. You can torpedo whatever remaining votes from women you still might get at this point and confirm that you're all a bunch of crazy conspiracy theorists, all at the same time.

Hillary tearing Ron Johnson a new asshole on live TV was pretty awesome theatrics. It's been nauseating watching Johnson and the rest of his Republican friends grandstand today. Secretary Clinton handled all their obnoxious posturing with grace and diplomacy.

I suspect that, after her kick-ass, take-no-prisoners testimony today, there were some wet panties among the prospective GOP candidates for 2016, contemplating the possibility of facing her in the next Presidential debates.

    Give 'em hell, Hillary!

"What difference at this point does it make?"

    That woman's on FIRE!

The ebb and flow between high praise and monkey poo slinging is the perfect backdrop for Hillary's "Day Care" exercise. What a bunch of toddlers!

    Proceed, Senator...

Even the Repubs on O'reilly's show (got stuck watching it at the gym) admitted Hillary wiped the floor with the ReTHUG questioners. Of course, tey blamed HIllary for being prepared and for the RETHUGS not doing their homework. BOR is a bore.

Ron "T-bag" Johnson needs to be voted out of office. It is clear he spent more time going over Fox transcripts than reading the information presented to him by the St
ate Department. Surely Wisconsin needs a dog catcher, somewhere.
