Lance Armstrong finally comes clean and admits to years of doping. Do we now live in a world without heroes? Update!

I have virtually NO sympathy for Lance Armstrong, nor any desire top give him a second chance.

This man lied repeatedly to his fans, and to the cycling officials who confronted him, and even went so far as to trash the reputation and try to destroy the careers of fellow cyclists who dared to tell the truth about him.

I have no compassion left for the man.

You know when I was young I had a brief career as a powerlifter.

I had started lifting weights as a freshman in high school and took to it immediately. By the end of that first semester I had doubled the amount of weight I could lift and was hooked. I became a gym rat and have trained with any number of powerlifters and bodybuilders up here.

I enjoyed it and when I found out there were actual competitions held that awarded trophies and prize money, I was all in.

My first couple of times out were very successful and I even set a new record or two for my weight class, which was 165 in those days. In fact I was actually only competing against myself, trying to improve my best lift and gain more muscle just to see how strong and big I could get.

But then at around 24 years old things began to change.

There was another competitive powerlifter in the gym that my buddy and I frequented that was also in my weight class. When he first started lifting there he was not nearly as strong as I was and I paid little attention to him. But after awhile, and not a very long while, he began to make significant gains.

I remember that in one month his bench press had improved forty pounds. At our level of competition that was unheard of. A beginner might see similar gains, but not somebody who had been lifting for a number of years.

I had already had some experience with bodybuilders using steroids and knew that they were becoming more an more prevalent.  One day in the locker room I overheard this guy talking to another member and going on and on about the human growth hormones he was on and the other chemical help his doctor was helping him with.

I had worked all year to improve my lift by fifteen pounds and this guy was poised to make all of that effort meaningless. That really pissed me off.

My friend said that if I really wanted to stay competitive I would have to use the same substances this guy, and now others, were using.

But I couldn't. To me taking a substance to enhance my abilities was cheating, period! In my mind there was no way to win if I could not win without taking shortcuts, and it was certainly not worth risking my health for the sake of a tin trophy and a fistful of cash.

So I just walked away. I continue to lift to this very day, but I have never even contemplated competing again.

Now I know that Lance Armstrong made significantly more money through HIS sport than I could ever have hoped to make through mine, but at the end of the day look who he has to see staring back at him from the mirror.

I don't have a shelf full of trophies (Well I do have  a few.) but in exchange I get to look in the mirror and like the guy staring back at me, and I get to talk to kids about ethical and moral behavior without feeling like a hypocritical douchebag.

The choice to take the easy path to victory, or to put winning above everything else, is an indication of your character.  If you are the type who cares little for how you win, than in my mind you simply do not deserve to win.  And you certainly do not deserve to be admired by impressionable young people for your accomplishments.

In a world where it seems heroes are few and far between, this is yet another example of  somebody who accepted glory and accolades that he KNEW he simply did not deserve. Personally I think he should be forced to return the money paid to him by his sponsors, hand back his prize money, and dedicate the rest of his life to lecturing young people on WHY cheaters never win, and winners never cheat.

I watched the interview and I agree with you, Gryphen, I have no desire to forgive him or see him in the news whatsoever.

As fallible human beings, we're taught to forgive and forget. In many cases, yes, I've done that to loved ones, friends, etc. And I've asked said friends and family to forgive the stupid things I've done and said to them.

But there's something about this continual lie told by Armstrong that is different. I guess because he kept at it for such a long time and so strenuously. What he did to team-members and their families (wives) is reprehensible. A bully..he's a bully who has finally been caught.

I hope that the feds go after him, too. He could possibly be liable to repay donations to the tune of $30 million. He's got it. He's a very wealthy man. Lying helped make him so..

Once upon a time, George W. Bush was so popular because he was a guy the great unwashed felt that they could have a beer with him. Nevermind that Goergie was a dry drunk and couldn't touch a beer, ever again.

When the great unknown Sarah Palin came on the scene, she was so home-grown and folksy who ran a small business, lived without healthcare and single-highhandedly sent all the corrupt bastards to jail - the great unwashed couldn't believe their luck that one of their own was Presidential material. But very quickly she moved from the chump-change of nickel-and-dimeing the State for a stay-at-home-co-governor to private corporate jets and a six-figure wardrobe from the RNC. Did the people protest? No, they started saying she DESERVED to be pampered and kept from the unwashed so that she could serve with that Alaska Servant's Heart of Hers!

Someone posted on an Armstrong post today, a saying he heard of the Navy Seals, "if you aren't cheating you aren't trying." True story, these hypocritical apologists are now going to spin that winners have no choice but to cheat.

In the words of Sarah Palin, "UNBELIVEABLE!" There should be consequences for bad behavior, right?

We are hoping that some day $arah will have to do a "mea culpa" interview with Oprah along the same lines

"Yeah, I did sorta borrow somebody's Trigster, but I'm a grizzly Mom, so I uhh. could take better care of, you know, the baby.

"Oh, that MatMaid dairy there, I uhh.. probably shouldn't have let what's her name run that and umm... I don't remember nothin' else

" Those railings in my house kinda did give *that* away. I thought the jig was up when Willow invited the boy to her bedroom and the camera caught those glass railing panels"

What about a public that has some self respect? Do people want to be duped and made the idiot fool of some "winners" lies? How low can we go?

People have some self respect. Just because you are duped doesn't mean you have to live the rest of your life in such a pitiful state. Grow up and show some self respect.

It is not about the cheaters who "win", it is what people will settle for. That kind of "win" is not winning at all. It is living the lie and passing it on for future generations to carry on and lower their standards, too.

Dumb rationalizations for criminals to go with that weak philosophy/saying.

Dear "Once Upon a Time" "When the great unknown Sarah Palin came on the scene, she was so home-grown and folksy who ran a small business, lived without healthcare and single-highhandedly sent all the corrupt bastards to jail.." Troll,

Baldy was right, "God won't let the wrong person win" The election in 2008 proved it, and the election in 2012 sealed the deal.

God's pretty smart! He wanted Sarah Palin to fail, and fail miserably!

As a person who dabbled in weight training myself, I think I can comment on this a little. I did it not for the sake of body building but for strength training for my sport of professional canoe racing. And so, I was never concerned about the progress of the others in the gym and of course I wasn't doing it for the sake of body building so that I could stand and gaze at myself in the mirror as the body builders usually did at the gym.

But I also found that some people progressed more quickly than others and some of them I knew personally and was totally convinced that they weren't using any chemicals. In fact, the ones that I called friends weren't interested in appearances in the least, they were as I was, only interested in improving their performance in their respective sports.

However, getting back to Lance Armstrong who this is all about. He was a cheater and was because his sport became less important to him than his vanity. Therefore, we who have also played professional sports look down on him for that reason more than anything else. He didn't play the sport for the sake of the sport, he played only for the sake of his own vanity. That makes him no better than a professional body builder who is more interested in posing in front of a mirror than anything else. This is not the point for athletes, be they professional or casual weekend athletes. It's for the sake of the sport and for one's own personal satisfaction, not to impress others with one's appearance.

The only reason he apologized or admitted this is to earn more money and fame. He wants to compete in other areas and now has to suck media dick to do it. He is a fame whore, always was a fame whore and will always be a fame whore. I am sorry that people were taken in by his line, but having dealt with the same cancer he has, NO FUCKING way did he do what he did with out chemical help. He just had the money and know how to rig the system.

I find the lying, intimidating, bullying , and litigious actions Lance Armstrong conducted over the past fifteen to twenty years far worse than the doping. So not only was Lance a cheater, but he coerced others to commit the same crimes, and destroyed everyone who dared to tell the truth about him. He is a narcissistic sociopath who should never be allowed to compete in anything and hopefully the courts will force him to repay everything he has ever won.

Combine Armstrong and Te'o hoaxes and you aren't close to what Senator McCain and Sarah Palin did. Where are the investigative reports and media that is paying attention to what matters? Why is it anyone who has tried to investigate and report facts ends up being bullied and harassed?

On the world stage the sports miscreants, including the Jerry Sandusky-Penn State crimes, paint America and Americans as fools. We have been duped BIG TIME. The world knows it and that is only in sports.

We are the leader of Democracy in the world. It would be nice if our Democracy is working. We should keep a well functioning Fourth Estate as well, since it is critical to a fully functioning Democracy. Who would want a Democracy if it means following a bunch of fools that are easily duped due to no integrity from so called journalism in America?

If America wants to stay in our collective denial so be it. I do hope we will fight and fight hard to also expose the workings of our Democracy. Campaigns should matter and it is necessary to purge the crooks that abuse the system in the slightest ways.

Our media is controlled and we have had a black out on the facts about the McCain/Palin hoax. Most Americans don't know what happened. They don't care if the rest of the world has a clearer view and can see we are fools in a failure of Democracy, a criminal campaign is not excusable and never good for Americans or Democracy.

How do we educate Americans with a flawed and crooked media and investigative journalism that SUCKS?

      Excellent rant!

The media is the problem. I don't know how the public can possibly exert the type of pressure needed to make a difference. The reason I became obsessed with the Palin hoax was because I thought it was of such a sensational nature that exposing it would be a wake up call to the incompetence of the 4th estate (and political and religious leaders). Shaking up a few influential journalists may be what's needed to change the media from the inside out.

I've pretty much given up at this point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, please. My husband, who is a health aide, told me what they were doing was taking their own blood, "cleaning" it up, super oxygenating it and then replacing it back into their bodies pre-race. You can imagine the boost that would give your endurance. It is also very possibly why Lance has remained cancer free. It is still cheating though.

I don't know why anyone would take steroids, it has been proven to destroy your sex life as well as other health detriments - all for the sake of looking like a Grade A Prime beef ready for slaughter. As for growth hormones, I'm not so sure I would want to be a guinea pig for long term health studies on the implications of its use.

I too adore Tesla! But, the man had flaws. He was a product of his time and like many intellectuals of that generation, was pro-eugenics. However, that doesn't make him a bad person. We have to remember they didn't see the ill effects of it, and were only exposed to it as a concept rather than in practice what it was, a massive violation of human rights. The only way to have heroes I think is to admit we are all humans with flaws and also to see historical figures (I know Tesla isn't very 'historical' really but rather recent) as products of their time rather than applying current norms to them.

Gryphen, just so you don't feel too bad about your fellow lifter and his druggie ways, I used to work out with a guy at City Gym in Sydney - OK he was a biggish guy and I was just s slight female, but we both loved bodybuilding. I complimented him one day on his much improved physique, and then he just wasn't there any more. Some weeks later he returned, and when I asked about his absence, he admitted he'd been in hospital, suffering from steroid overdose! The guy in the bed next to him had DIED, and others were impaired. Steroids can be fatal, and those who take them, without good medical supervision, risk their lives at worst, and their health at best. You made the right decision.

You may have inspired some youth to compete honestly, or to follow the right path, and it won't give you promotion, fame and money but will help another human aspire to do right.

Smug, self-righteous, litigious mother-fucker. Earlier this afternoon, I talked with my BiL who is from and lives in Austin. He said that Lance was only the 2nd biggest asshole in Austin until last week (behind Rick Perry). Then Alex Jones nudged Perry back to #2 and Lance to #3 on the asshole list after Alex showed his ass on CNN. But as of today, Lance is way ahead of the other assholes.

I asked why people disliked Lance before when there were only rumors of him using PED'd. He told me, I don't give a shit about the cycling and cheating. Lance is just a selfish, me-first asshole. The past few years, the annual rainfall in many parts of the southwest has been reduced considerably, and Austin has had to put some strict water-usage laws into effect to conserve water.

But Lance is one of those assholes that thinks ruled and laws are for other people. He has a nice home on a nice estate, but he got busted for using over 300, 000 gallons of water during July-08 when washing cars and watering lawns was a no-no. This made him a champion of a different kind-- his usage made him one of the biggest consumers of water... Not just in Texas, but in the entire U.S.

He apologized to the city of Austin, but in one of the most ecologically- conscious cities in the country, it was too little too late for many of his neighbors. I'll day whaty brother- in-law was too polite to say about Lance. It's easy to hate a mother- fucker like him, regardless of his talent and achievements, because even when he's doing something good for the community, he's fucking over someone else out of the picture to discount any goodwill he could've earned. He's in everything for himself, and you are fucked of you get in his way, because he will try to destroy you financially, even when he's wrong legally, because he had deeper pockets and too many suck-ups and enablers. In that regard, he's just like Sarah Palin. "It's about ME and ME ONLY!"

There's nothing wrong with it. Some take it too far and end up looking odd, but that is their choice and they must live with the consequences. Hair coloring, the small adjustment via surgery or fillers/Botox; nothing out of the ordinary and a basic part of many women's lives as aging begins to accelerate.

My whole family is into physical fitness and health, but not anything close to competitive body building level. It takes a lot of hard work, time and sacrifice to train. Cheating just takes the "sport" out of the equation, and it hurts those who value their integrity.
I can see why they get carried away and feel they need to cheat, but at what cost?

Anyone watching this can see it's not genuine. He waited for the statute of limitations to expire on his previous lies to cover his ass. Lance basically masturbated his ego before the healing queen of interviewers, Oprah Winfrey. He didn't accomplish what he wanted, he just showed us the REAL bully coward those whose careers he destroyed already saw.

The only regret I have is that I donated to Livestrong, knowing now what a sham he is makes me not like him more.

Some judge should "lance" the boil known as Lance Armstrong, strip him of is titles and make him pay back every dime. It won't make things right for those he cheated, they may never get another chance to win a medal, but it would teach others about how empty a win is if one needs to cheat to attain it.

Oprah is as abhorrent as Lance. Gah, if you worship her as the "healing queen of interviewers" then she too shall let you down one day.

It's not the crime so much as the cover up that does people in.
