President Obama's swearing in for his second term in office. The best video you will watch today.

"I did it." He says to Sasha.

Yes Mr. President you sure did!

Of course tomorrow is when we have the OFFICIAL swearing in with all the pomp and circumstance, but I have to say that I might actually prefer this more intimate swearing in ceremony.

I like the idea of it just being the President and his family with Justice Roberts and a gaggle of reporters. The bigger venues, and larger crowds, make me nervous anyhow.

I cannot express the depth of appreciation I have for this man. His heart, his soul, his ideas, his wisdom, his grace, his dignity, his honor, his compassion, his deep integrity and empathy, his humor, his voice, (and his 'voice' (Loved him singing) his SPIRIT of such Light and Love.

I'm just a day or so away from clocking 60 decades on this planet, and having witnessed presidents for a long, long, long, time, THIS president is the one who truly makes me PROUD to have in the White House, representing this country around the world. His capable intelligence and nuanced approach to difficult things makes me feel safe.

And ALL I wish for he and his family is to feel and BE..SAFE.

I can't add much to your commentary. I think he will go down in history as the best president the country ever had.

Yes, the best President to serve the American people in its history and yet there still remains a segment of the population that hate the man with such vengeance that it makes me fearful for him and his family.

I know that GWB received his share of hatred from liberals but I can't recall it ever being this bad.

He will be one of our best presidents in history and I hope there will be a spot made for him on Mt. Rushmore!!!

Thank God he and VP Biden are running our country. I trust and love them both!

    5. I'm guessing that's a typo and you're not really coming up on 60 decades on the odometer. If you really are, maybe Sarah Lou will post one of your secret recipes in her fitness/cookbook.

I agree with your words on President Obama. He ain't perfect but he's the best we have for the job right now, and without a doubt, one of the best in the past 100 years. He deserves our respect and support.

President Obama Sworn In for a Second Term, in a Quiet Ceremony

President Obama was quietly sworn into office for a second term just before noon in a brief and intimate ceremony, ahead of Monday’s far showier public inaugural celebrations.

The ceremony, which lasted less than two minutes, satisfied the Constitutional requirement that the president’s swearing-in take place by noon on the Jan. 20 after an election.

The oath was administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. in the White House Blue Room, an elegant, gilded space with a sweeping view of the South Lawn. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was sworn in earlier in the day.

  4. Great comment by Outlandish on the swearing in article at HuffPo which summarizes how grateful I am for this day and this President:

"President Obama a recollection: Was born in Hawaii to a mixed ethnicity family; Was raised by a single parent; Saw and lived in a foreign culture for a few years; Returned to Hawaii while his mother studied and completed a course in anthropology; His family was so poor, they lived on food stamps. He studied at 2 Universities. Majored in constitutional law; Was the top of his class on graduation; Turned down million dollar job offers to work with the poor, disposed, dispossessed and disenfranchised, for a pittance; Became a constitutional Professor; State senator, Senator, Has a loving highly gifted wife and well adjusted children; Has just paid off his first house; Has a net worth of 8.4 million dollars; Is the first president to pay for renovating the living quarters in the White House out of his own pocket and returned the amount allotted for this to every president, back to the treasury; Has tried to govern from the middle, much to the chagrin of the left base; Has adopted Republican ideas when he saw value in them only to have the Republicans obstruct even their own ideas; He has an outstanding list off accomplishments and successes as President and is too humble to beat his own drum about them; Has gone from poverty to President; He doesn’t use religion as a wedge issue to divide the nation: He survived the most dishonest campaign and propaganda event in the entire history of the United States, He turned the economy around from net job losses in the first quarter of 2008 to 32 months of job creation, through his foresight and in spite unparalleled obstruction by those avowed to destroy his presidency, even if it meant destroying the economy and shattering real people’s lives. Thank whatever God you believe in that he won because his loss would have brought back the same team that nearly destroyed the world economy and went to wars for personal enrichment while Americas sons and daughters lost their lives for no bid contracts and big oil.The whole world breathed a sigh of relief on Nov 7.Congratulations Mr. President"

...In sharp contrast to the ceremonies planned for Monday, with their blaring patriotic music, pealing of bells, and parade of thousands of human and equine participants, the ceremony on Sunday was small and understated.

Witnessing the Blue Room ceremony were family members of the president, including his wife, Michelle, and their daughters, Sasha and Malia.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was sworn in earlier at his residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory, using the same 19th-century family Bible he has used in every swearing-in ceremony since he entered the Senate in 1973.

At Mr. Biden’s request, the oath was delivered by Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor who read from a printed text to avoid any chance of mistake. He was surrounded by family members, including his wife, Jill.

Afterward, Mr. Biden shook the justice’s hand, turned to a large audience of family, friends and close political associates, and expressed his warm thanks. Justice Sotomayor, he noted, was due in New York and had a car waiting to take her to Union Station. “Madame Justice, it’s been an honor, a great honor,” he said.

Mr. Biden then left for Arlington National Cemetery, where he joined President Obama in laying a wreath before the Tomb of the Unknowns.

One the President's first inauguration there was an issue with a messed up swearing in - and they did a re-do after in the Oval Office.

Did they have this personal, private swearing in ceremony BEFORE the public ceremony in order to avoid a 2008 replay?

    1. No. The Constitution states the President must be sworn in on 20 Jan at noon.

BTW, he is now tied with FDR, both having been sworn in four times.

      Delete
    2. In a word, no.

January 20 today, the date mandated by the 20th amendment for the swearing in, is, as you may have noticed, a Sunday. By tradition, formal inaugural ceremonies are not held on Sundays. Since the 1933 ratification of the 20th amendment, Eisenhower and Reagan were sworn in on the Sunday before the formal ceremonies. Before the amendment, Monroe and Taylor just postponed taking the oath for a day but Hayes took it privately the day before.

More to the point, I am grateful that Roberts wrote down the oath this time so he doesn't flub this simple task.

The constitution requires that the swearing in be on January 20. I haven't heard why they made the public ceremony tomorrow but it could have something to do with the fact that today is Sunday and also that tomorrow is Martin Luther King day and a federal holiday.

Did they have this personal, private swearing in ceremony BEFORE the public ceremony in order to avoid a 2008 replay?

It was to meet the Constitutional requirement (20th amendment) that the president’s swearing-in take place by noon on the Jan. 20 after an election.

Why is the public ceremony a day later? Tradition! President James Monroe started it, in 1821. He decided to hold the ceremony on Monday because "courts and other public institutions were not open on Sunday," according a release from the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

I know I'm being picky, but today was the OFFICIAL swearing as required by the Constitution. Tomorrow is the public ceremony.

What a beautiful, loving family. It is so sad that the right is so full of distrust and hatred they cannot see what a fine example this family is for our youth. Gracious, calm, loving...everything we need at this stressful time in our history. And, yes, I too am worried about security tomorrow. The crazies are on high alert.

I had to sever contact with a few family members who have become profoundly racist since Obama's reelection. I was told verbatim "the blacks don't have to take any responsibility" as the sole rationale to repeal the estate tax. That, and because I actually read books and newspapers, I now cannot visit my sister without my brother-in-law begging me to admit that Obama won reelection because people were voting with their heart and not their brain. Yes, the incumbent who passed the health care reform he ran on the first time, presided over the capture of Osama Bin Laden, delayed a financial collapse, and ended an unpopular war beat a political unknown because of jungle fever.

I know that feeling all too well. I haven't been able to sever relations with a couple of the baggers in my family because I wasn't hosting the get-together at Thanksgiving. But they know where I stand, and I got some kudos from others who are not so die-hard politically partisan for not being baited into a debate with those who don't listen anyway. Without directly acknowledging a jab directed to me " your boy is gonna cause another civil war getting them blacks all stirred up". I ignored the speaker, but told another relative a few seconds later that I had been " looking forward to seeing everbody and eating some gooood food. It's always good to see family, because they don't let little things like politics or favorite football teams and rivalries come between us. We can pull for the Falcons , well I can't personally. lol, or we can pull for the Saints... But we're still all family before, during and after the game, regardless of who wins or the margin of victory." The baggers heard this and I never heard another mention of the President's name or rude comments the rest of the day. The prior year that wasn't the case, where feelings were hurt and some were embarrassed.

But it's true. It's not worth losing a family member over. These happen to be in-laws married I to the family, but still, their wives and kids love them do I shouldn't be rolling my eyes at their nonsense just because theyve been fed a bunch of nonsense that they now believe as the gospel.

I live in a small town with a small school district. It's a military town. On the day of the first inaguration, we all received an email that we couldn't show the ceremony in our classrooms because a few hateful, bigoted parents objected. We couldn't send their students to another room. Oh hell now! NOBODY gets to watch history happening live when an African-American is elected as president. We can show live feeds of any other historical events though.

So far, no email forbidding it this year because it is happening on a holiday.

I work in a city elementary school in western NY. We were fortunate to have the full support of our district administrators 4 years ago when the inauguration happened on a school day and many principals chose to have the students watch as history was being made.

Since most of the students in my school are of African-American or mixed race, the event was particularly significant, and the pride that all of us felt - even those of us who were middle-class, middle-aged, white teachers - was palpable.

I was so thrilled that my students had such wonderful role models in President and Mrs. Obama, both as professionals and as parents of wonderful daughters.

I wish the President and his family a successful and SAFE second term and I hope he is able to realize many of the dreams he has for our country.

That's what they call throwing the baby out with the bath water. Or maybe it's "that's why we can't have nice things."

You're right though. Being forced to ignore history as it occurs is just plain ignorant. The fact that it's done based on race is beyond just being ignorant... It's repulsive.

Looking at Baldy being so strung out and tipsy, I'm doubting she can really heave the old 16 oz can of creamed corn the way she used to. Maybe a snack size of jello or pudding. Or a small can of Vienna sausages or Sardines. While those might get someone's attention ir make a small mess, even costetic dents are unlikely, even if she gets lucky and hits her target. You can come out of the closet now, Todd. Or the pantry, where you're hiding, and stay in the closet.

It's my opinion that Sarah's days of making the big dents are behind her. The era of booming appliance sales days are over for Wasilla. I m getting a little misty-eyed because of the nostalgia of the good ole days.

  12. I watched the ceremony this morning and also loved the intimate setting and the simplicity. It was very moving and I was extremely proud of my country.
Sadly though, it didn't stop the right wing meme of a super-secret swearing in on a Quran.
Despite the fact that The Constitution requires the POTUS to be sworn in before noon on 1/20 and despite the fact that it was televised on all major channels and included a close-up of the Robinson Family Bible held by Michelle Obama and clear audio of the President saying; "So help me God", they are still lying and hating.

So I like Rush, the awesome prog-rock 3 man band, on my Facebook. Facebook 'dun goofed and showed me an ad for Rush Limbaugh: "You know how to stop abortion? Require that each one occur with a gun"

...yeah. Every time I think that this guy cannot possibly be as awful as I think he is, something else happens. Reminds me of the this one article he did: during the Kony 2012 crazy, Rush had an online article about how Obama had sent evil government troops to kill CHRISTIANS in Uganda. He was helping MUSLIMS (gasp black Muslims, too) kill CHRISTIANS.

    Jesus fucking Christ.

Oh, BTW, all you NRA fanboy lurkers need to get your history in order. Hitler didn't disarm the German people, he confiscated the property of the Jews. In fact the Weimar Republic had stricter gun laws than the Nazi regime that took it over. Hell, the Nazis lowered the age at which somebody was legally able to buy a gun from 20 down to 18.

It was the moment that Republicans worked every minute of the day to stop. It was also a moment that they also dreaded as deep in the dark corners of their minds, they felt the inevitability. When Barack Obama took the oath of office for his second time as president today it represented the success of the changing face of America, and the failure of the old guard to recapture power that may be forever gone.

The corporate billionaires threw in their pocket change millions. The white conservatives bubbled over with venom and rage. The South tried to muster its political strength. The old Republicans promised that this time these new young faces would not vote.

They dreamed. They conspired. They even invented polls that they thought would twist their visions of victory into reality.

In the end, here we are again. Barack Obama, the man they spent every waking second of the last four years trying to defeat, once again is their president.

Obama was able to again take this oath because of millions of Americans who didn’t go along with the plan. While the right was telling itself that anybody could defeat Obama, a majority was working hard to make sure that no one defeated Obama.

When Obama was sworn in for his second term, it was reminder to right wing billionaires that the presidency is not for sale. It was reminder to Republicans that the negative politics of obstruction had failed. It was a reminder to the people that they can make a difference. It was a reminder that hope and change are great ideals, but what we are fighting for is the future of the country.

Most of all, it was a reminder that for the next four years, Barack Obama will be our president.

I like the idea of using the Robinson family Bible today, and the Lincoln AND Martin Luther King Bible tomorrow. It ties in well with President Obama's story.
